Description:
Manuka honey is honey produced from the nectar of the manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), which is found widely across the North and South Islands of New Zealand.

Mānuka-type honey is honey that contains a proportion of mānuka, but other honey types may also be present. Mānuka-type honey characteristics include specified colour and conductivity ranges, the presence of naturally occurring mānuka-type pollen, methylglyoxal (MG) and dihydroxyacetone (DHA), and expected aroma and flavour properties.

MGO (Methylglyoxal). This is a trademarked system, used by a honey company for testing the level of methylglyoxal in the honey, which is subject to independent testing and certification.

MGO™ Manuka Honey has been the only food in the world found with significant Dietary Methylglyoxal content ranging from 20mg/kg to over 800mg/kg. In contrast all other honeys worldwide tested have ranged between 1 to 10mg/kg. Other foods range from 0 to 50mg/kg, with coffee and cocoa being the highest. MGO™ 100+/250+ Manuka Honey has been tested and certified to contain at least 100mg or 250mg/kg of Dietary Methylgloxal.

Note: It is recommended that children younger than 1 year of age should not be given honey.

Suitable for :
For children above 1 year old and adult to relieve sore throats, throat irritation, cough, colds and gastric problem.

Direction of use :
Consume when necessary.

Recommendation :
For sore throat problem, consume 1 tablespoon of MGO™ 250+ Manuka Honey after meal; avoid drinking water for at least 1/2 hour after consumed.

For gastric problem, it is recommended to consume 1 tablespoon MGO™ 250+ Manuka Honey 1/2 hour before meal.

Active UMF® 10 + Manuka Honey

Manuka honey is obtained from the manuka bush (leptospermum scoparium) which grows uncultivated throughout New Zealand.

Manuka has antibacterial properties, primarily due to hydrogen peroxide formed by the enzyme glucose oxidase which is present in honey. The antibacterial potency of different types of honey can vary widely. Some types of honey have antibacterial properties akin to sugar, while others can halt the growth of bacteria even when diluted more than 100-fold.

What Does UMF Stand For?

UMF stands for Unique Manuka Factor, the factor responsible for naturally destroying bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus and Helicobacter pylori. UMF is an industry registered name, trademark and standard indicating antibacterial quality and represents a guarantee and measure of the antibacterial potency of honey.

UMF was first discovered by Dr Peter Molan, of Waikato University’s Honey Research Unit.

Honey contains an enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide, a substance with proven antibacterial properties. During the course of his research, Dr Molan discovered another more powerful and stable antibacterial property (UMF) in some strains of manuka honey.

UMF and hydrogen peroxide, when combined, have a synergistic effect which enhances their individual effectiveness. Studies have shown that the enhanced antibacterial qualities of UMF Manuka honey give the honey special healing qualities.

It is not yet fully understood why only some types of Manuka honey have the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) antibacterial property. Only honey that is tested and verified is given a UMF rating and is referred to as ‘Active UMF®’.

Antibacterial Benefits of Active UMF®

It is resistant to heat and light and remains stable and active even in storage.
Active UMF® is unaffected by enzymes in the body or in wound fluids, and is more resistant to metabolism compared to hydrogen peroxide. Normally, peroxide isn’t considered a good antimicrobial because the body dilutes it too quickly.
Researchers have not found any bacteria resistant to UMF® activity.
This antibacterial agent does not eliminate good bacteria in the stomach.
Antioxidants in honey prevent the formation of free radicals, and thus prevent further damage to the site of injury.
The enzyme that produces hydrogen peroxide in honey becomes active only when honey is diluted. But UMF® is active in full strength honey, which will provide more potent antibacterial action by diffusing deep into infected tissues. The enzyme also requires the presence of oxygen to produce hydrogen peroxide, so it may not work under wound dressings or in wound cavities. Honey with UMF® is active in all situations.
The UMF® antibacterial activity diffuses deeper into skin tissues than hydrogen peroxide.
Indications

As an antioxidant, provides support for the healing of wounds and stomach ulcers, topical agent for cuts, burns, acne, abscesses and eczema.
