Hi, I would like to share a designer website (mostly for web & design) and they always held monthly wallpaper showcase. There are a few times our art is showcased so I would recommend lowyat artist to participate as well. You can easily showcase your work to the world.

Dear design students (or future students)

When I read through some threads about Uni / college that offers design courses, and often I heard negative comments out of it, saying school / lecturer not good etc. So I drafted this post for the current design students, or those who interested to join design faculty, how to deal with such situation.

FYI, I'm a lecturer in a private college teaching IT and multimedia courses. I will share with you a little bit of lecturers point of view:

1. To study design means study most of the thing by yourself. Lecturer will not teach u everything.
There are 2 types of class, lectures and tutorials. Lectures are meant for student to gain new insight and understanding of "how it works" and "what is happening". Tutorials are simply "how to do this" class.

So what if the tutorial didn't teach what you want to do in your assignment? Usually, design assignment means everyone will have different ideas and approach they want to take. Whenever a student approach me saying "I would like to do this that here there, teach me how to do it", I always give them tutorial websites / Youtube searches with certain keyword.

Why? Because we can't teach everyone in the class every single new thing they want to do. In a student mind there's only 1 lecturer / tutor, but from our point of view there are 50 - 200 students. We try not to be bias. If you learnt how to build a chair in tutorial, don't ask your lecturer how to build a table. Research and figure out how to build a table by yourself.

2. Never consult your lecturer empty handed.
Don't get me wrong, it doesn't mean we completely ignore the student. Once student have tried and built something new, feel free to approach your lecturer for comments. This is the part where lecturer appreciate student's effort to improve themselves. And this is how a student get better score than the rest.

Consulting a lecturer empty handed and expecting answer is not a good move. It means students expect the lecturer to do the thinking work for them. Just like take the question paper and ask the teacher how to do question 2, 6, 10 during exam.

3. Don't expect good score just by following the weekly tutorial.
Tutorials are meant for "practice moves" so student will know what to expect when they are doing the actual thing (or refer to the tutorial on the net). When an assignment only consist of basic steps, the best grade given are merely pass.

This culture is very different from high school or even other faculty. Read the book, score the exam, get high score is never the case in design field.

To get A, student need to know how to make 1 + 1 = 3. There's a lot of exploration need to be done. E.g. combining new ideas, technique and produce up to modern standard quality. This requires many hours of practice and solid understanding on the subject. Which there is no way a lecturer can simply install into student's brain in an hour.

That's what I can think of for the moment. If you want to know more, post some comments and I'll try my best to answer. Again, this is just my insight being a design lecturer. Hope it helps.

self host wordpress login problem

Hi guys, I wonder if anyone faced the same problem as I'm having with one of my blog.

when I try to login, after the key in the right username and password, it doesn't bring me to the dashboard and nothing appear. Basically it just displayed a blank white page with the same link (it doesn't redirect). It looks exactly like website operation time out.

I tried the following steps below:
- access my blog home page (working as usual, nothing wrong at all)
- check the folder directories with ftp (nothing extra and no file is overwritten)
- update my wordpress to version 3.03 (doesn't help the situation)
- try to log in my other wordpress blog hosted on the same server. (login success and nothing wrong with it)

Any idea how to fix this problem? Please share if you face similar problem before.

Flash and backlinks

If I have a flash banner in my blog and link it (buttons in flash banner, like those flash banner ads) to another site, does it count as one backlink for the site? or google won't consider it since it is flash.

I know anchor text is the best but I have my reasons to use flash banner for sites.

Hi guys. I'm currently looking for site that provide similar features like comboutique.asia, but stationed in South East Asia. The features should include the sales and delivery handling, the designer only need to register and submit the design.

Would like to target SEA market so I need to find cheaper alternative. TBH, the base price in comboutique.asia is quite expensive.

Website Bounce Rate

Bouce Rate, one of the nightmare number that we hope it to be as low as possible. It indicates how well your site can keep your visitors and how the content appeals to the readers.

According to my Google Analytics Stats, my blog BMecha.com is having bounce rate like 60.81%. Let us share the data and discuss what measure we can introduce to reduce this number, for better blog traffics & stickiness.

For my site:
1. Have the latest post links at my side bar.
2. Create customized banner at my side bar with interesting photo. In my blog's case I put my toys gallery photos as banner.

These 2 elements have the highest click rate for my home page, other than the post header. Hope to see other webmasters can share their methods.

need help, looking for good stock music site

hi guys, currently i'm working for a project that require me to get a suitable music. however the client is very picky of the type of music they need. both stock music library www.neosounds.com and www.soundrangers.com i'm using now have nothing much left for me to propose to client. can anyone please recommend some good stock music site? i need those cool steady jazz feel music (example: hotel lobby / fine dining restaurant / fashion show). i found a lot of crappy website that seems like 10 years ago... i need a more professional website that can provide their music in various option (best to have sound loop).

As a 25 years old web designer that spent 3 years in the industry, i like to know how is other designers doing in terms of their career development. thanks to this economy crisis or maybe just my wrong judgement of choosing employer but my income did not increase much since 3 years ago. did everyone thought of their future path in any design industry? like own a design agency or become art director etc. let us share what other fields that in your mind.

currently i'm exploring e commerce and internet marketing to start a side business. but just in case this din work out i'll have to look for other job too. i created this thread also for those who want to join design industry to have clearer idea what kind of position / job scope / income.

Hi guys, nice to meet you all. I'm B-mecha, a malaysian web designer that currently working in singapore. i started my blog and start to look around and posting in LYN few weeks ago. Although i joined LYN few weeks ago but i yet to have a proper introduction about myself and my blog (sorry for that ). Thanks you for viewing my blog ya.

I started this blog to share me and my friend's fan art wallpaper, might have original one but that will be later (i hope so). As i see there are quite a few desktop wallpaper site around so i decide to go for mobile platform. Kinda sad when ppl are actually download those low quality pictures and paying rm2 for them Hope my blog can satisfy those who want better art on their phone.
