Protect Sapura from bankruptcy

PETALING JAYA: Najib Razak has urged the government to protect Sapura Energy Bhd from bankruptcy by providing loans or instructing Petronas or Khazanah Nasional to take over ownership from Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB).

The former prime minister was critical of PNB for failing to take action during the tenure of the previous Perikatan Nasional administration on Sapura’s problems and for stopping cash flow assistance.

“PNB and the government need to think about the country’s strategic interests. The ecosystem of Bumiputera vendors, creating high-value jobs for the people and the economy as a whole – it is more than just making another investment.

“If Sapura goes bankrupt, 10.6 million Amanah Saham Bumiputera investors will suffer direct losses of RM4 billion.

“PNB, the Employees Provident Fund and other provident funds will face indirect losses due to debts of RM10 billion owed to local banks, such as Maybank, of which PNB owns 50%,” he wrote on Facebook today.

Najib also said nearly 10,000 high-paying jobs would be lost and around 4,500 vendors or suppliers would be affected.

“Malaysia will lose a multinational company, as well as the largest petroleum services company in the country’s most important sector.”

He urged the government to act immediately by providing easy interest loans or loan guarantees to Sapura to solve its cash flow problems, citing that this was how his Barisan Nasional government saved Proton.

Najib, however, noted that this would be a temporary solution if Sapura remained under PNB, which was “inexperienced” in this sector and had made inaccurate decisions in the past. “The same problem could happen again,” he said.

Alternatively, he said, the government could direct Petronas or Khazanah Nasional Bhd to take over ownership of Sapura. Petronas not only still required Sapura’s services for its projects, but had a better understanding of the sector.

“This was how Petronas saved MISC Berhad in 1998. Upon recovery, Petronas (or Khazanah) can resell part of Sapura’s shares to the local market just as Petronas resold MISC’s shares to make a profit,” he said.

According to Najib, Sapura, 40% of which is owned by PNB, announced a loss of RM8.9 billion last year – the biggest loss for any government-linked company in history. “Sapura is on the verge of bankruptcy, faced with dozens of bankruptcy suits filed by its vendors.”

“Sapura’s share price fell from around 80 sen before GE14 to 3.5 sen. This means that PNB’s additional investment of RM2.7 billion in 2019 when the share price was 41 sen has fallen by almost 95% in just three years.

“Sapura used to be the second-largest oil and gas sector services company in the world with a value of RM30 billion. Currently, this company, which is still a service company to the country’s largest petroleum sector, is only worth around RM500 million to RM650 million,” he said.

Najib said the company’s problems arose out of excessive borrowings made before 2015 when the price of oil hit US$100 per barrel. When Sapura tried to apply for a working capital loan of RM2 billion from local banks after oil prices began rising in 2019, its loan applications were declined.

Although PNB conducted a reshuffling of Sapura’s management in early 2021, Najib said PNB no longer wanted to help the company with a new loan but instructed Sapura to dispose of its assets to solve its cash flow problem.

“Lockdowns, as well as the closure of international borders, complicated the sale of the assets.

“Without bank facilities and working capital to continue existing or undertake new projects, Sapura will certainly go bankrupt,” he said.

Only RM100 for road construction in Sabah?

KOTA KINABALU: Former Sabah deputy chief minister Wilfred Madius Tangau is flabbergasted that the state has only been allocated RM100 for the construction of major roads next year.

Speaking to FMT, an annoyed Tangau said he discovered the matter after checking the national budget booklet provided in the Dewan Rakyat today.

For this reason, the Tuaran MP has submitted two motions to the Parliament secretary to slash RM1 billion from the RM1.029 billion allocated to the peninsula under the category “other construction” for next year under the works ministry.

“I propose that RM1 billion be re-allocated to the same ministry (works ministry) but RM500 million each goes to Sabah and Sarawak with the rest of the allocation, which is RM29,145,700, given to the peninsula instead.

“I’m making this suggestion because the allocations for major road construction given to Sabah for 2021 is only RM100,” said the Upko president.

Tangau said this amount was an astonishing drop from the RM60 million allocated for the same purpose to Sabah for this year.

“I thought that when Sabah is politically aligned to the federal government, there will be more allocations? So why only RM100 … where’s the logic in this?

“This is an insult to Sabah and Sabahans,” he said.

At the same time, he added, Sarawak’s funds for major road construction this year amounted to RM33 million but the state was only given RM1.5 million for the same purpose next year.

Tangau questioned the logic in raising this year’s allocation of RM310,400 for the peninsula, under the “other construction” category, to over RM1 billion for next year.

“What is this? I am stunned,” he said.

“Everyone is aware that the federal roads in Sabah and Sarawak are in desperate need of improvement, particularly to encourage development in both states.”

Arsenal fall victim to embarrassing scam

Arsenal have fallen victim to an embarrassing scam after it seems their deal with vehicle manufacturer BYD Auto was signed off by someone acting as an employee of the Chinese company.

The Gunners revealed in April that they had penned a deal with 'the world's best-selling electric vehicle manufacturer'.

However, just three months later it appears the employee of the Chinese company who sanctioned the agreement, in fact, didn't even work there.

The suspected fraudster, Li Juan, has now been detained and is currently being investigated by Shanghai police.

Reports suggest Juan rented property in the Chinese city and tricked potential clients into believing he had opened a BYD branch there.

BYD - which stands for Build Your Dreams - designs, develops, manufactures and distributes cars, buses, commercial vehicles and rail stock.

It also provides buses to Transport for London and employs more than 220,000 employees across five continents.

In a statement published after signing the deal, Arsenal insisted the partnership 'came to fruition following our successful pre-season tour to Shanghai and Beijing in 2017'.

It was accompanied by a picture of Gunners stars Granit Xhaka, Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi holding a shirt, upon which 'BYD 1' was printed.

As part of the package, BYD would receive 'pitchside LED signage' and 'branding on dugout seats' at the Emirates Stadium. It also had access to Arsenal Legends for special promotional events in China.

BYD issued a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange last week in which they claimed foul play.

It said: 'Recently, BYD Company Limited noticed that some media published or reproduced false reports about the Company, which involved misinterpretation of the Statement on Conducting Related Businesses by Li Juan and Other Related Persons through Illegal Use of the Name of BYD released by the Company on 12 July 2018 and distortion of facts.

'Such reports caused the question to the Company from the public and negative impact on the Company, to some extent.

'Li Juan was suspected of committing a crime due to faking the identity of staff of BYD and using the forged seal to sign contracts, which BYD has reported to the police.

'The police is getting involved in the investigation and Li Juan currently has been taken for enforcement actions by the police.'

I just got a great Christmas gift which is my Mobo & proc died.

So, now I need to buy myself another Christmas gift.

Parts from my old PC which is still working is as below :

Ram : 2x1GB DDR2 667 (Most likely no use already, since getting new Mobo)

When contacted, San Express Holiday managing director Sor Eng Hock, currently in Bangkok on business, said: “I am very sad ... I am shocked.”

According to Zakaria, the bus was headed to Kuala Lumpur from Cameron Highlands, and it was believed that the tourists were to have flown to Bangkok from Kuala Lumpur.

Zakaria said preliminary investigations indicated that the driver lost control of the bus before the vehicle hit the road divider, crashed onto the opposite lane and overturned.

There has been a series of bus accidents in the country lately, leading to calls for better enforcement of laws on speeding and quality of buses.

Some of the approaches to the highlands are narrow, windy and treacherous, but today's accident occurred when the bus was on a highway.

PC Can't Boot Up

Hi guys.

As per title, my pc is unable to boot up.

When I press the power up button, my pc will start for like 1 sec (GC and Mobo got light) and then shut off again.

The sequence happens twice, like engine can't start i.e :

Press Button > Cpu on > Cpu off > Cpu On Again > Cpu off

I really not sure what's the problem, maybe my PSU died or perhaps the on-off button got problem.

I've tried many times and it's the same.

Any advise?

P.S : No beep sound during startup.

“The guidelines are currently being drafted and the amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code will involve the Attorney-General, the Bar Council and the Courts, said Chief Justice Tun Zaki Tun Azmi at the annual Judges Conference on Monday.

However, Zaki was unable to say exactly when they would be implemented.

“The step was taken to help reduce the numbers of backlogged cases so the cases can be cleared as fast as possible,” he said.

The Chief Justice also hoped that the amendments would encourage offenders to plead guilty instead of going through a long trial.

Amendments allowing plea bargaining was approved by the Parliament on 2nd June 2010 and gazetted on the 10th of June.

“This year’s Judges Conference will be focused on reviewing the problems where cases are not moving as fast as they should.

“We will also be discussing how to overcome delays of cases, postponement problems as well as reviewing the current sentencing policy,” Zaki said.

At the conference, Judge Barbara Jacobs Rothstein, Director of the US Federal Judicial Centre was invited to share solutions to similar problems faced by the courts in the United States.
