Formatting my laptop from vista to xp

recently my laptop encountered a virus atk from my friend's pendrive.
i managed to remove the virus but the problem is my laptop getting slower.
so, i decided to format the whole thing and install xp. now im using vista.
i think using xp will slightly increase the performance because vistas using too much memory.
is it possible?

but my anti virus doing nothing ?

Problem details Always disconnected
First occurence of problem: New Year
Problem frequency: Often !!
Problem description: you guys know the DSL light right ? Sometimes it wont light up.. it is not controlable.. sometimes 30mins it happens.. sometimes 1hour.. not consisten..
Last year there was no problem.. As always i need to restart the modem around 10minutes to surf the net again.. Damn hate it..
My neighbour doesnt having the problem.. What should i do ?
