Blackberry Internet Services Questions

I am going to buy a blackberry curve 8900 or 8520. Any comments on this?

And then I would like to have the phone but I dont want to spend extra on the Blackberry Internet Services, but then can I still push mail from let say gmail? because the sales girl said can not need to subscribe it to push email to the Blackberry phone. I wont just like to have the phone and check mail occasionally using EDGE/3G, most of the time I will use the Wi-fi instead.
Please dont ask me to choose another phone as I would really want a blackberry for long term use.

Please advise.
Thank you.
