He said the new findings by USM on the iron industry site in the Bujang Valley, which is believed to have been built during the era of Kedah Tua (Government of Old Kedah), "is of national importance which shows that the Malaysian civilisation in the Bujang Valley was earlier than it looks".

Oppenheimer was asked to comment on the USM findings which showed not only proof that Malaysia's early population was economically advanced and had ventured into the iron industry, but was also a bigger Bujang Valley civilisation which encompassed about 1,000 sq km - three times the size of Penang island - and not 400 sq km as thought before.

Systematic exploitation of iron ore

Oppenheimer said the findings were also very important not only for Malaysia but also for the region since they showed evidence of monumental structures and a civilisation which included the systematic exploitation of iron ore from the local mountains and the smelting and ritual structures.

He said excavation of the area would produce a lot of works and significant findings in the future since currently only 10 per cent of the area had been excavated.

Meanwhile, Dr Susan Jane Allen of the United States' International Archaeological Research Institute in Honolulu, Hawaii, a non-profit cultural research management company, was excited with the new findings at the Bujang Valley, especially the recently unearthed prehistoric buildings in Sungai Batu.

Dr Allen, who had been involved in the excavation of sites 71, 72 and 73 in Sungai Batu three decades ago, had speculated that there was something about the site.

"I was working on my PhD project. I knew there was something under the mound and very curious about it. At that time, the area was a rubber estate, and Site 71 was a mound about 75cm above the ground in a mangrove area of the estate.

Getting international recognition

She said that with the area being developed into an oil palm plantation, which involved the removal of large amounts of soil, the prehistoric buildings were unearthed.

USM's Centre of Global Archaeological Research director Mokhtar Saidin said a scientific article would be sent for publication in an international journal within the next three months to get international recognition for the new findings at the Bujang Valley.

The article would be aimed at securing confirmation from international archeologists on the new findings so that there would be no disputes on the findings, he said.

He said the ongoing conference was to inform Southeast Asian archeologists of the findings.

The three-day conference, organised by USM's Centre of Global Archeological Research and the National Heritage Department, is being attended by 100 participants from 11 countries including India, the United States, Vietnam, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, China, Myanmar and the United Kingdom.

Erik Gates, who contributed to the popular Discovery Channel show "MythBusters" as its "Amateur Rocket Expert," has died. He was 47.

According to media reports, Gates died in a freak accident. He was at a building in Newbury Park, California, doing electrical work on a roof, when he fell 30 feet from a skylight. He died December 20.

Gates was an owner of Gateco Electric, which was employed at the site.

On its Twitter page, "MythBusters" tweeted, "Team MB wishes to express our deepest sympathies on the passing of our beloved rocket expert, Erik," followed by "You were an honorary MythBuster and will be sorely missed."

Gates and his brother also ran Gates Brothers Rocketry.

Iraqis say Iran has seized oil well in Iraq

Iran is denying any takeover took place.

The Iraqi government issued a strong statement deploring the act after Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki headed an emergency meeting of Iraq's National Security Council to discuss the situation.

"The council stressed that such incidents would be considered a violation of the border and violated Iraq's sovereignty and its territories and calls upon Iran to pull out the group from well No. 4 and take down the Iranian flag from the tower of the well immediately," Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said in the statement.

Senior Iraqi government sources initially referred to the Iranians as "security forces," but the official Iraqi government statement later called them an "armed group."

Drilled in 1979, the well is in Iraq's Maysan province, east of Amara, near the Iranian border. It is within the province's Fakka oil field, the Iraqi government said.

Al-Dabbagh said in the statement that the Iraqi government had summoned the Iranian ambassador in Baghdad, Hassan Kazemi Qomi, to inform him officially about the incident and asked him to provide a note to Iran's Foreign Affairs Ministry "to address such a violation."

The statement said the Iraqi government called upon Iran "to resolve all border problems through diplomatic dialogue and avoid the use of military force in order to preserve our common security and bilateral relations between the two countries."

An official at the Iranian Embassy in Baghdad had said earlier that Iraqi authorities had not yet contacted them.

Iraq and Iran share a long border, and high-ranking committees from both countries handle all border matters, an Iranian Embassy official said.

Iraq and Iran fought a bloody eight-year war that ended in 1988 in a cease-fire with no clear victor and parts of the border under dispute.

But political, economic, cultural and religious ties between Iran, a predominantly Shiite Muslim nation, and Iraq, a majority Shiite Muslim nation, greatly improved after the overthrow of the Saddam Hussein regime in 2003. At the same time, there has been widespread concern among Iraqi and U.S. officials that Iran has been providing Iraqi insurgents with material for roadside bombs during the Iraq war.

The report of the oil well incident comes several days after the Oil Ministry's two-day auction of oil fields. Aimed at increasing Iraqi oil production, deals were struck for seven of the 15 fields offered. There also had been oil bidding in June.

People in surrounding Albay province have flocked to town centers to catch a glimpse of glowing lava cascading down the slopes of Mayon since the mountain began oozing fiery lava and belching clouds of ash this week.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised its alert level for the Mayon volcano Monday night, warning that a full-scale eruption could occur "within weeks to days." The volcano, about 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of the Philippine capital Manila, has gone off 49 times since the first documented eruption in 1616.

The Philippines is in the so-called Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Mayon's most violent eruption, in 1814, killed more than 1,200 people and devastated several towns. It's last major eruption was in 1993.

Since then, it has emitted ash and spewed lava but remained restless.

Beijing, China (CNN) -- Secret, illegal "black jails" exist in China, a state-run weekly has confirmed, despite official denials otherwise.

Chinese citizens in search of justice often end up in such detention centers when they file complaints against the government, the state-run weekly magazine Outlook reported last week.

A network of such jails awaits the petitioners when they travel to Beijing and provincial capitals to seek redress or compensation for injustices. Many are victims of land grabs, physical assault, discrimination and corruption, often at the hands of local officials.

"They come to Beijing out of desperation after they hit a dead end in their localities," said a government official who spoke on condition of anonymity, because he is not authorized to speak publicly.

Government officials have adamantly denied that such facilities exist.

The report by Outlook -- detailing a "gray industry" of illegal detention centers -- also was published online by its parent company, the official Xinhua news agency. It was a rare reference to illegal detention centers in official Chinese media.

A staffer at the Ministry of Public Security's information office declined to comment on the Outlook report, saying "this issue and the reports are irrelevant to our duty and work."

Human Rights Watch released a report this month on the jails. The report is based on interviews with victims, the New York-based aid agency said.

In the report, the agency details how government officials or security forces seize petitioners in Beijing and other Chinese cities, strip them of their possessions and imprison them. Human rights activists and petitioners call them black jails because they operate outside the sanctioned institutions.

"The existence of black jails in the heart of Beijing makes a mockery of the Chinese government's rhetoric on improving human rights and respecting the rule of law," said Sophie Richardson, Asia advocacy director for Human Rights Watch.

Official denials continue.

"I'm not sure what evidence the report of Human Rights Watch is based on," the ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement. "However, I can tell you that there are no such black jails in China."

According to Outlook, local governments send officials to Beijing to set up ad hoc offices to handle the petitioners from their regions.

Once the petitioners file complaints, officials -- worried that they will receive demerits from superiors because of the complaints -- hunt down the petitioners, grab them off the streets and lock them up in rundown hotels, rented houses and nursing homes. Security guards keep petitioners from escaping.

"The aim is for these officials to cajole, pacify or scare the petitioners to return home," the government official said. "Problem is, many of these officials are crude and abusive."

Xinhua referred to a report from an "authoritative department," saying that there are 73 temporary "petitioner-reception offices" in Beijing, among which 57, or 78 percent, are set up by local cities. There are 46 illegal petitioner-reception centers, such as houses rented from farmers.

Yu Jianrong, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a government think tank, worries that the illegal actions against petitioners will weaken the effectiveness of the courts set up to resolve social problems.

"The illegal petitioner-handling measures can create new conflicts and instability," Yu said.

The Outlook report does not mean the government will address the issue, one expert said.

"I don't see it as a sign that the central government is planning to ban them," said Donald Clarke, a lawyer and expert on the Chinese legal system.

"Recall that they are already banned -- there is at present no proper legal basis for petitioners being detained there. It is already kidnapping or unlawful detention, from a legal point of view."
