Jho Low slams Singapore's allegations against him as politically motivated

"Any attempts to link Mr Low (pic) to the recent guilty pleas by parties allegedly making secret profits are based on unfounded assumptions.

This is an example of overreach with a politically motivated and selectively chosen narrative alleging 1MDB as a "victim", when it has been clearly stated by the Malaysian authorities that there has been no evidence of any misappropriation of 1MDB funds.

No wrongdoing has been proved in any jurisdiction relating to the alleged misappropriation of 1MDB funds, and this development in Singapore does not change that.

Mr Low is confident that any impartial party presented with the complete facts will see that the allegations are flawed, biased and create an inaccurate picture."

KUALA LUMPUR: Penaung Program Permata, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, berkata pihaknya berhasrat membina lebih banyak pusat Permata Kurnia di seluruh negara bagi menyediakan program prasekolah untuk kanak-kanak autisme.

Isteri Perdana Menteri itu berkata, ketika ini hanya pusat PERMATA Kurnia di Sentul yang memulakan operasi pada 3 Nov lalu menyediakan program prasekolah untuk kanak-kanak autisme berusia antara empat hingga tujuh tahun.

“Permata sememangnya ingin menambah bilangan pusat seperti ini di seluruh negara bagi membantu dan memberikan pendidikan buat kanak-kanak autisme, namun ia masih lagi dalam rangka perancangan sahaja,” katanya.

Beliau berkata demikian ketika berucap semasa melawat pusat autisme pertama negara ‘PERMATA Kurnia’ di Sentul bagi meninjau perjalanan program yang disediakan kepada 241 kanak-kanak autisme.

Semasa lawatan dua jam itu, Rosmah turut mendengar penerangan dan pengalaman ibu bapa mengenai anak-anak mereka yang mengikuti pendidikan awal di pusat itu.

Inflation to rise this year

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians should brace for higher prices this year on rising public transportation charges, toll rates and the abolishment of electricity rebates.

Nomura Holdings Inc senior economist for South-East Asia, Euben Paracuelles, said in a note that prices would increase by 2.8% year-on-year for 2016 compared with a 2.1% rise in prices last year.

However, he said inflation could moderate should crude oil prices continue to fall.

Meanwhile, local brokerage JF Apex anticipates inflation to rise by 2.9% this year.

Both research houses expect Bank Negara to maintain the overnight policy rate (OPR) at 3.25% this year as inflation remains manageable.

“At the current level of the OPR, the stance of monetary policy remains accommodative and supportive of economic activity,” said JF Apex.

Economists expect core inflation to remain at 3.7% in December 2015. Paracuelles sees inflation to continue rising this month and projects an average 4% rise in inflation for the first quarter before moderating to 2.4% for the remainder of the year.

He said the higher projection for the first quarter was due to substantial base effects from the fuel price cuts in the first quarter of last year.

“These base effects should reverse quickly, given the implementation of the goods and services tax in April 2015. Fuel prices were also cut again in January, by another 10 sen for RON 95 and by 20 sen for RON 97 petrol prices, and there could be more to come.

“We estimate average ringgit-denominated Tapis crude oil prices month-to-date are already about 11.4% lower than the December monthly average, suggesting a likely fuel price cut next month,” Paracuelles said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK), Datuk Hamzah Zainuddin has urged his staff to pack lunch boxes or cook their meals in the office to counter the rising cost of living, China Press reports.

Hamzah was quoted as saying that 2016 is going to be a rocky year for the country due to the global economic downturn alongside the reduced budget allocations of all ministries and agencies.

“I see eye to eye with the secretary-general’s proposal to implement measures in our department for our staff. We will not serve meals during meetings after this, and everyone is encouraged to pack their own lunch [to the office].

“Starting tomorrow, I’ll also bring my own rice to cook in the office. I welcome those who want to join me during lunch hour,” he said in jest.

Realising the challenges that lie ahead, he remarked: “We should not be afraid of challenges and must embrace them head-on. We must also work together as a team in order to achieve our goals.”

Hamzah said that many baseless accusations have been hurled against the ministry but hopes that everyone will work together during this difficult time.

Meanwhile, the minister also pointed out that the allocations for the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism had been cut down to 16% and 23% in 2015 and this year, respectively.

“This is equivalent to almost 40% in reduction in [budget allocations for the ministry] for the two years combined,” the daily reported him as saying.

“The ministry has held meetings pertaining this matter and we will try our best to use the limited allocations wisely. At the same time, we will also seek to recover debts from the relevant bodies,” he added.

The Disgrace of Malaysian University Education

Malaysia’s public universities have dropped completely out of the World University Rankings maintained by the Times of London. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia was ranked 87th in the top 100 Asian rankings in 2013, but has since fallen out. Not a single Malaysian university made the top 100 Asian rankings.

The collapse of higher education in Malaysia has grown so marked that World Bank economist Dr Frederico Gil Sander recently said the state of the system is more alarming than the country’s considerable public debt. The talent needed to develop the Malaysian economy is not being produced.

A very good article which touches on various aspects of our universities' governance.

National Security Council Bill Passed!

THE National Security Council Bill 2015 was passed by Dewan Rakyat, enabling the Prime Minister to declare a security area in the event of threats to national security.

The Bill was passed by voice voting after a heated debate on the last day of the sitting.

Earlier, in his reply, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim chided the Opposition for claiming the law was a “power grab” that would give the Prime Minister absolute powers to declare an “emergency”.

“It is not laws to declare an emergency, but a security area,” he said, adding that the law differed from the powers of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who can declare an emergency.

He said the aim of the law was to better coordinate and allow uniform response in the event of a security threat.

He cited the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esscom) where the police, maritime enforcement agency and armed forces had operated under separate laws.

“The police and marine have powers to arrest, but the army does not,” he said.

He also said that the new law would not prevent a magistrate’s court from holding an inquest into deaths occurring in a declared security area.

Shahidan assured lawmakers that the law does not contravene the principles laid down in the Federal Constitution.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 11, 2015:
Malaysia’s external debt has tripled due to a new definition given to the term since early 2014, said Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today.

Najib said this in a Parliamentary reply to a question by Selayang MP William Leong Jee Ken on the reasons behind the increase from RM43 billion in 1990 to RM740 billion in the third quarter of 2014, and its effect on the government’s finance and economy.

Najib acknowledged the increase and said the external debt had stood at RM196 billion in the end of 2013 due to the redefinition, which had applied starting from 2014.
“As a result, external debts now consist of offshore borrowing by the federal government, public enterprises and the private sector, as well as holdings of debt securities, deposits and trade credits denominated in ringgit.
“The external debt based on the new definition is higher, reflecting a high level of non-resident holdings of ringgit denominated debt securities, covering almost two thirds of the increase in external debt.
“This is due to the wider depth, openness and attractiveness towards the Malaysian financial market.”

At the end of 2014, the external debt stands at RM744.7 billion or 69.96% of the gross domestic product (GDP).
He added that the federal government debt at the end of December 2014 stood at RM582.8 billion or 54.5% of GDP.

“For the amount, 97.1% or RM566.1 billion were domestic debts, while the remaining RM16.8 billion or 2.9% were offshore borrowings.”
“The financial position of the federal government remains in order and is classified as a having moderate debt.
“The government remains committed in ensuring that that the federal debt level does not exceed 55% of GDP.”

Najib further said the government would continue with gradual fiscal consolidation to reduce deficit level. This position would enable the government to borrow less and lower the debt level.

Party secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said under the listing of bonds and treasury bills in Bank Negara Malaysia's website, there were two Malaysian treasury bills issued on February 11 and 13 for the amounts of RM1billion and RM1.1billion, which he said, were unusually high.
"The timing and amount is very unusual and out of character.

"For one, the Malaysian government has not issued anything to the tune of RM1 billion in the past and the timing is too close to the time 1MDB had to settle their RM2 billion debt," he said today.

Rafizi said going over the records of the last couple of months, the government's treasury bills were only in the amounts of RM80 million to RM100 million. So bills for RM1 billion and RM1.1 billion issued this month were unusually high.

1MDB settled the loans last Friday, six days before bankers triggered a default.
"Whoever came up with this, I take my hat off to them, because it will not come up in the statement of financial position in the federal government.
"1MDB could have happily and quietly gotten away after taking money from the public if this is true," Rafizi added.

Saying he was raising the issue as a concerned member of parliament, Rafizi said that if it were true that 1MDB's debt was paid off by the treasury bills, it meant that the government has bailed out 1MDB to the tune of RM2 billion.

He added that this was extremely dangerous, as it involved manipulation of government cash flow to cover for 1MDB.
Rafizi, however, said he could not raise it via a written question in Parliament as the treasury bills were issued on February 11 and 13, when the deadline for submission of parliament questions had passed either on February 10 or February 11.
"So I can only stand up and shout out the question in Parliament, but they are not obliged to answer.”

He added that 1MDB chief executive Arul Kanda Kandasamy said recently that talk that Ananda Krishnan had helped the state investment fund settle the debt was mere speculation.

"So it raises the question, where did 1MDB get the money to settle to loan, because for months it did not have the funds to do so.
"So let's see how our dear clever Arul Kanda will try to wriggle out of this one." he added. – February 17, 2015.

KUALA LUMPUR: The attacks are becoming more severe and frequent as Mahathir Mohamad took a direct hit at Prime Minister Najib Razak, saying he should resign if he could not perform.
“If the public think you are not performing and start criticising you, please make things easy for the country,” the former prime minister said during a public forum titled ‘The Malaysian Dilemma’ in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

“Nobody pushed me out when I resigned, just thought 22 years was too long,” he said.
He admitted that it was his fault that he chose poor successors and said, “I chose Pak Lah, and you know what happened.
“I chose Anwar, and you know what happened,” and added, “As for Najib, I don’t know if he is performing,” Mahathir quipped.
He also explained that he never thought his successors would fare so badly when they assumed power.
“But the thing is, before they came into power, they were really good. They were clean. Bersih. Now ‘bersih’ only refers to the demonstrators,” he joked to rapturous laughter from the floor.

When asked why he continued to criticise the government after having retired for 12 years now, Mahathir said he was simply exercising his right as a Malaysian citizen.
“I advise people who retire to be active. If you are not active, you die. I love this country. I have a right as a citizen to criticise,” the Malaysian Insider reported Mahathir as saying.
He also remarked how the current government was in denial, refusing to admit the dire straits the country was in.
“I am not a master of everything. But certain things I cannot support. I have publicly said that I do not support Najib because there are many wrong things,” he said.

Responding to a question on 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Mahathir said he would never have set up the company if he was prime minister.

about the DSAI case and trial.

1. If there was no penetration, how did DSAI's DNA get into Saifool's holy retreat?
If the act never happened, does this mean that Saifool obtained DSAI's swimmers
somewhere before introducing it into his sacred vortex?

2. The fact that Saifool brought the jelly was used to argue that it is an consensual act.
However, even if it is consensual, doesn't the laws of the land require that both the
actor and actee be prosecuted i.e. "kelakuan di luar tabii"?

Please enlighten me with /k/'s pencerahan tahap dewa.

1MDB tak bawak balik duit?

Singapore's Business Times reported that 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) CEO Arul Kanda Kandasamy has confirmed that the company will not repatriate the US$1.1 billion (RM3.9 billion) recently “redeemed” from the Cayman Island investments.

The reason was that “the money will be used to service the firm’s debt interest payments”.

“There’s a very sensible and simple reason for that. We are keeping the money in US dollars as we have US$6.5 billion (RM23.06 billion) in bonds out there, in which interest payments come up to nearly US$400 million (RM1.4 billion) a year,” he was quoted saying in the report.
The excuse given by Arul Kanda must have completely puzzled and tickled the readers of Singapore Business Times out there.

1MDB has a RM2 billion loan due to be repaid on the January 31, 2015. This loan was originally to be paid in November 2014, before being rescheduled twice. This RM2 billion loan itself is part of a rescheduled and restructured debt it couldn’t pay in November 2013.

1MDB is clearly struggling to raise the necessary funds to repay the above loan to Maybank Bhd and RHB Bank Bhd. Despite that, the newly appointed CEO can actually tell the investment public with a straight face that they are reserving the RM3.9 billion “cash” they have overseas for “future” interest payments of their other debts.

What Arul Kanda is telling us is that he would rather set aside the RM3.9 billion alleged “cash” overseas to pay for interest payments amounting to US$400 million (RM1.4 billion) a year due some time in the future despite the fact that 1MDB has a RM2 billion loan which is already overdue.

Does he actually expect Malaysians out there to naively believe him?
Why not pay overdue loan first?

Can Arul Kanda explain why can’t just a RM2 billion portion out of the RM3.9 billion redeemed be used temporarily to repay the overdue loan first while awaiting the much-hyped initial public offering of its energy subsidiary to raise additional capital?
Can Arul Kanda also explain why 1MDB would rather beg for a temporary loan from local billionaire Ananda Krishnan, on terms that could not possibly be favourable to the company to repay this immediate RM2 billion loan, instead of using the existing company funds?

At stake here is the stability and credibility of the entire Malaysian financial system. If 1MDB defaults on the RM2 billion loan, then the entire outstanding debt of 1MDB becomes due. Under such circumstances, the Malaysian financial system may collapse under enormous stress while the government’s credit ratings is bound to take a massive hit.

The government must immediately come clean with the above debt situation in 1MDB, which has even become a laughing stock in the international financial press – Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and now the Singapore Business Times.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 — The police said today they will not investigate a junior Umno leader for sedition over his suggestion that the Chinese vernacular system be abolished.

Despite MCA’s demand that the authorities pursue Petaling Jaya Utara Umno deputy division chief Mohamad Azli Mohemed Saad for sedition, Sepang police chief Supt Mohd Yusoff Awang said the case has been categorised as a civil matter.

“We investigated and we classified it as a civil case,” Yusoff told Malay Mail Online today.

MCA Selangor Youth education bureau chief Datuk Lawrence Low Kah Guan today expressed anger and regret at Mohamad Azli’s suggestion for the Umno general assembly next month to debate closing down Chinese schools.

“The MCA Selangor Youth Education Bureau hopes that an investigation must be carried out against Mohamad Azli after (a) police report has been lodged and stern disciplinary action must be taken in order to avoid criticism of double-standard(s) in implementing and enforcing the Sedition Act by the government,” Low said in a statement today.

MCA religious harmony bureau chairman Datuk Ti Lian Ker said in response that Umno had survived the 1999 general election because of MCA, when the majority of Malays rejected the Barisan Nasional lynchpin during the opposition’s Reformasi movement.

“It was MCA that helped BN (Barisan Nasional) win the day,” Ti told Malay Mail Online.

The ongoing government crackdown under the Sedition Act 1948 has seen investigations and charges against opposition lawmakers, but not politicians from the ruling BN.

Low called Mohamad Azli’s proposal unconstitutional and said it jeopardised the relationship between BN’s component parties.

MCA Youth lodged a police report Sunday against Mohamad Azli for sedition.

Wanita MCA chief Datuk Heng Seai Kie said in response that the right to vernacular education is protected under Article 152 of the Federal Constitution.

Tanda Putera IS fictitious

As it is, the talk about the movie Tanda Putera being released tomorrow is hitting nerves everywhere.
And as the director has stated, yes, it IS a work of fiction.
She has said that the movies were produced based on witness accounts, but what she did not take into consideration was that it was a limited perspective of a very large canvas.

Get the book May 13 by Kua Kia Soong from Suaram (available in MPH and Popular bookstores) to get a more balanced idea of what actually transpired.

And as the way it always has been, history is written by the winners.

KUALA LUMPUR: Controversial local film Tanda Putera, which depicts events leading up to and during the May 13, 1969 riots, will hit Malaysian cinemas on Aug 29 this year, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

"It will be released on Aug 29," he told reporters at the Malaysian National Film Development Corporation (Finas) centre.

Ahmad Shabery had previously called for Finas to publicly screen Tanda Putera.

Directed by Datin Paduka Shuhaimi Baba, the film depicts events during the May 13, 1969 riots, focusing on Malaysia's second Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein and his deputy Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman.

Produced in 2011 by Persona Pictures Sdn Bhd, the RM4 million film carries a PG13 rating and was supposed to be screened from Nov 15 last year.

Commenting on the date, Ahmad said he preferred the film to be screened earlier, during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holidays.

"People have been waiting for the film to come out, so the sooner the better," he said.

However, Finas officials said that if Tanda Putera was released then, it would not do well at the box office.

Finas director-general Raja Rozaimie Raja Dalnish Shah said that two other movies were scheduled for a Aug 8 release Adnan Sempit 3 and Lemak Kampung Santan.

"Based on our previous experience, collections for films released during Hari Raya aren't that good...Three Malay movies during Hari Raya is not good," he said.

Raja Rozaimie said that the film's producers asked for the Aug 29 date, adding this allowed it to be marketed from now.

The Cabinet earlier held back the screening of the film as it was concerned it would cause conflict among communities.

PSP2000 Tilt Screen

Hello to all the sifus here.
Wanna ask something.

I sent my PSP2000 to a shop to replace shoulder L button.
After the repair, I notice the LCD display is a bit tilted to the left.
The repairman said it's LCD internal problem and need to replace the screen.

Is it true or can the screen be easily adjusted by removing the PSP cover?
