Mod: this may not be appropriate sub thread but it has highest visibility for best awareness for all

Just a friendly PSA for everyone who is using UNIFI/Streamyx/Maxis/Time to be aware and to change your default router password from the common default ones.

Reason is recently there's a bastard in Malaysia who is trying to do a dictionary brute login into your routers. He's doing it behind proxies but for sure is a Malaysian using very Malaysian usernames and passwords during the attempts.

I notice the following daily attempts logged: (have removed the time component and filtered repeated username attempts, admin is the most)

<div class="spoilertop"
Dentsu Utama - Malaysia quality level of Photocopy

Dentsu Utama, Malaysia's creative shame.

Malaysia 4As disqualifies two Dentsu Utama Kancils winners for plagiarism
Two pieces of winning work at Malaysia’s most prestigious advertising awards show the Kancils have been disqualified for plagiarism.

“Professional Man”, a campaign for internet privacy awareness firm Web Privacy Watch by Dentsu Utama, “contained almost identical images” to the work of Swedish artist Erik Johansson, an optical illusion piece called The Architect, ruled ad industry body Malaysia 4As, the organiser of the Kancil Awards.

The same is true of “Cross River Gorilla”, an anti-poaching campaign for World Wildlife Fund in Indonesia by Dentsu Utama that bears similarities to the work of a British design student, the 4As determined.

“An investigation was initiated by the 4As following various complaints of the obvious similarities to the original creations,” said Tan Kien Eng, Kancils jury chair and CEO of advertising agency Leo Burnett Malaysia.

“This action is being taken to remedy a contentious situation while upholding the principles of eligibility for the Kancil Awards,” Tan said.

The agency’s award-winning work was developed after the work created by Erik Johansson and 21 year-old designer Tom Anders Watkins, the 4As confirmed, so the awards will be withdrawn.

The original creators have shown proof that their works were posted much earlier than the work by Dentsu Utama, Tan confirmed.

Anders Watkins complained about his work being copied in a social media post late December. “Hey, @dentsuaegis @WWF I think you may have blatantly copied my design in your award winning poster,” he tweeted. His complaint was picked up by a number of news outlets.

“Cross River Gorilla” claimed won 26 bronze awards and three silvers at the Kancils, while “Professional Man” won six bronzes. The awards helped Dentsu Utama win agency of the year at the Kancils last month, although that accolade is expected to now be attributed to another agency.

The investigation followed questions raised in two stories by Mumbrella following the announcement of the Kancils winners late last year.

“We take a serious view of work that is deemed sufficiently close to works created originally elsewhere,” Tan commented. “We must maintain a high level of integrity and credibility as the industry’s official body in Malaysia. The decision to disqualify the awards for both creative works was not taken lightly as we had explored all possible scenarios. In the end, the facts were overwhelmingly in favour of the original creators.”

The ruling comes the week after the 4As decided that a campaign by Dentsu Utama for Uyee Chinese Medical Company, which won 20 awards, was “not sufficiently similar” to a project for a Chinese skateboard decoration firm
Challenge Skateboard to constitute copyright infringement and so warrant disqualification from the competition.

Dentsu Utama consulted an international copyright firm to defend the entry.

This year was the 20th anniversary of the Kancil Awards.

Source: http://www.mumbrella.asia/2016/01/malaysia-4as-disqualifies-two-dentsu-utama-kancils-winners-for-plagiarism/

DBKL increase assessment rates 2014 *update*

Today update 17 Dec 2013:
http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysi...-new-assessment

Tengku Adnan says less than 10% of property owners object to new assessment rate - Bernama

Less than 10% of about 500,000 property owners in the federal capital have sent letters of objection on the new assessment rate to be enforced by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) on Jan 1 next year.

Federal Territories minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (pic) said the number represented only about 40,000 property owners.

"We did not increase the rate to an amount that could burden the owners, although the prevailing value of properties is higher.

"DBKL is empowered to raise the rate every five years, but we had overlooked the matter all this while," he told reporters after presenting letters of offer to 50 tenants at 10 people's housing project (PPR) and public housing project (PPA) areas here today.

On the protest against the assessment hike at Dataran DBKL today, Tengku Adnan said it was political propaganda by the opposition to twist the issue.

"We are doing all this for the sake of the property owners in line with the increasing value of the properties," he stressed.

DBKL has received 60,000 applications from city dwellers for the PPR and PPA; however, only 3,000 units are currently available.

Tengku Adnan said DBKL had identified 5,000 tenants of PPR and PPA who had defaulted in their rental payment or rented out their units to other people.

"We will seize the units and give them to applicants in the waiting list. For those with arrears, please settle them. If they cannot afford to, we will assist them through our social corporate responsibility programme," he assured. - Bernama, December 16, 2013.

Old Source on increase of DBKL assessment rates

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

source:
http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysi...bns-future-elec

BY JENNIFER GOMEZ
November 14, 2013

The head of the Taman Seputeh residents’ association believes the hike could be an impetus to kick out the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government in the next general election, due by 2018.

He is not alone. Other representatives of residents’ associations are also seething at the increase announced by Kuala Lumpur City Hall through notices, which house owners have been receiving in the past week.

The last revision of assessment rates in Kuala Lumpur was 21 years ago.

And according to a report in The Star last year, the total number of residential properties in Kuala Lumpur stood at about 1.77 million units.

Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor yesterday justified the hike in assessment rates by saying property prices have gone through the roof.

“If a house used to cost RM80,000, but is now worth RM700,000, but the assessment rate is still low, what are we going to do?” Tengku Adnan said in Parliament yesterday.

Quah was not convinced with Tengku Adnan’s reasoning.

"The increase is ridiculous," he said, adding that for link houses in Taman Seputeh, the assessment rate has increased from about RM9,000 to RM18,000.

In Kepong, some owners of low-cost houses are saying the hike is as much as 267%.

"They (City Hall) sent us a letter saying that we have 12 days to object," Quah added.

The vocal representative did not stop there, he questioned why Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was being quiet about the rising cost of living which was burdening the middle-class.

"The PM is so quiet, he is the man behind all of this," Quah hit out, adding that this hike could lead to people taking to the streets to protest if not addressed.

What was even more ridiculous, he said, was the rationale given for the increase.

Quah disclosed that when a Taman Seputeh resident went to City Hall to get an explanation on how the new rate was calculated, he was told that "the rate had not been increased for years".

"That is their explanation. Where else can they get the money from, I guess."

Bukit Bandaraya residents’ association president Datuk Mumtaz Ali also questioned why City Hall was increasing the rates without consulting the people.

"Why are they not adhering to the PM's call for 'rakyat didahulukan'?

"They have not engaged us. What we want to know is have they improved their services?"

He said that on the contrary, residents in the leafy Bukit Bandaraya suburb were suffering because of the approvals given for more commercial activity in the area, which the authorities justified as
adding value to the neighbourhood.

Bangsar Baru residents’ association secretary Prem Kumar Nair agreed, adding that this rate increase would not go down well with the people, especially with the recent goods and services tax (GST) announcement and Putrajaya’s recent removal of the subsidy for sugar and reduction in fuel subsidies.

"The government must first address pilferages and undertake cost saving measures, as we know government agencies pay suppliers more than they need to,” he said.

"City Hall has a lot of money in its coffers. So they must first address the wastages and leakages instead of asking us to pay more."

Desa Aman residents’ association secretary Koh Guan Swee concurred that the people were burdened with rising costs, adding that this was not the right time to increase rates as salaries have remained stagnant.

"It will never be the right time to raise anything now until the government finds a way to improve the income of the middle and lower-middle class who are suffering with the rising cost of living,"
he said.

Koh added that fresh graduates with degrees were only earning RM2,000 a month and as such could not support themselves without the help of parents who were also struggling to pay bills.

He also took City Hall to task for wanting to increase rates when service levels have not improved.

Prem also asked, "Can they justify that they have done enough to mitigate the traffic congestion in the city and the crime rate?

"Have they built enough pavements so that the public can be safe from snatch thieves?"

Quah, meanwhile, added that the excessive increase in rates cannot be justified.

"If they increase by 5 or 10%, it is acceptable, but they have increased by more than 100%.

"This is like being stabbed in the back," Quah said, adding that he had formed a committee to come up with a letter of protest to City Hall.

Mumtaz also said that most home owners in Bangsar were in their twilight years and would not be able to afford the high rates.

They all demanded that City Hall engage the people in consultation and get feedback before pushing the new rates on home owners.

Kuala Lumpur lawmakers, meanwhile, pointed out that the new rates would have a domino effect on many, including tenants.

Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai said, "Obviously landlords will then increase their rent and pass this on to their tenants."

Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar took Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib to task for sanctioning the move, comparing his management with that of former mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Fuad Ismail.

"He (Ahmad Fuad) managed to always raise revenue for the City Hall without having to raise the assessment rates," she pointed out. – November 14, 2013.

What is the worst investor nightmare?

For me, i think the worst will be when government wise up and implement rule when purchasing any property requires a background check on investor's immediate family and decide whether they are allowed to buy more than a fixed amount of total property per family limit.

anyone can come up with worst?

Klang a mini Foreigner City

http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file...055&sec=central

QUOTE

THE number of Indonesians, Nepalese, Bangladeshis and Myanmars are increasing in some parts of Klang.

This is evidenced by the many foreign-owned businesses such as food stalls, restaurants, mini-markets, sundry stores and barber shops found around the town.

There is even a shop that serves as a bank.

These enterprising foreigners are carrying out businesses openly with signboards written in their mother tongue.
Common sight: Signboards in foreign languages is becoming a norm in the town.

Such businesses are found along Persiaran Sultan Ibrahim in Klang North and Persiaran Raja Muda Musa in Port Klang.

Port Klang resident Steven Pua, 60, said the situation had worsened as the number of foreigners engaged in business had increased over the past three years.

He said almost all the newly-opened food and drink stalls were being operated by foreigners.

“They have even built a structure on a vacant land that served as a food outlet in Jalan Cunggah.

“Foreigners are also operating mini-markets and restaurants along Persiaran Raja Muda Musa,’’ he said.

Another resident S. Veera, 55, said Jalan Kem in Port Klang had been turned into a red light district that was ran by foreigners.
Not local: A leather goods shop in Persiaran Raja Muda.

He said they were also operating nightclubs while foreign girls could be seen along the streets trying to lure the locals.

“The image of Port Klang has been marred by this,’’ he said.

In Klang, Jalan Pos Baru, Jalan Pos, Lorong Kepayang and Jalan Batu Tiga Lama have become the favourite business areas of foreigners.

Nepalese, Bangladeshis and Indonesians have also set up businesses along the backlanes of Jalan Raja Hassan and Jalan Batu Tiga Lama, facing the former express bus terminal.

They are operating sundry shops, fruit stalls and leatherware stores.

A Myanmar restaurant and mini-market operated by Bangladeshis are prominent businesses in Jalan Raja Hassan.

A number of shophouses on the first floor of Jalan Pos and Jalan Pos Baru have been turned into restaurants by Nepalese and Myanmars.

Klang Consumers Association president A. Devadass said the former Klang North bus terminal and its surrounding area were now “taken over” by foreigners.

He feared that the town would be soon overrun by foreigners.

“It appears to me that the authorities are not doing anything about it,’’ he said.

Devadass questioned how foreigners were allowed to operate businesses, especially when they came into the country with work permits.

“I do not understand why there is no action taken by the authorities,’’ he said.

Devadass said he had made numerous complaints to the Klang Municipal Council but had not received any reply.

as Klang becomes more and more a foreigner city, they will overrun the township. as they are not legals, they have no fear of being caught as their fingerprints or even facial identity cannot be traced since no documents to reference to. so they become bolder and bolder.

the next nearest townships are Subang, Shah Alam and Puchong. anyone fear of the future one day when the crime rate gets so high that the value of properties takes a hit because no one dare to live in the area next to them?

Ghost / Haunted Properties

For buyers:
obviously one does not wish to buy a haunted house nor want to buy a house whereby there is case of murder happened before. so how does one go about to avoid such properties? of course it is due to own effort to ask around the neighbors to find out the information. so let's say it is difficult to do so for various reasons, is it:
a. ok to put in clauses in the S&P to either indemnify the buyer from the seller?
b. enforceable to sue should there be problems with the unit that the buyer finds out later on especially if placed a clause in the S&P?

For sellers:
hypothetically if i have units which have problems of ghost or haunted, i will inform before the buyer comes to view the unit but that is just me. not every other seller will be that honest though. so in that scenario whereby you are a seller and die die of course you want to offload the problem unit, will you:
1. keep quiet about the problem? even when potential buyers ask quite directly?
2. dispute arises because you are middle man (owner didn't inform the agent that there is problems so agent tell buyer no problems but then later on find out got problems and blame the agent?) so how in the middle?
3. buyer & seller signed s&p with such a clause but owner seller to the best of his knowledge knows no such problems but buyer later complain. how to solve dispute?

Discuss? Thought this is interesting enough as can't find such thread over here

Custom Flash camera bracket

Hi there,

Firstly, i'm not a seller. I'm person interested to have a flash bracket myself. What you see is a custom version made by someone, let's call mark1. It's been tested on Canon 1D series and 5D series and Nikon D3 and DXXX series in our local photography scene, so far so good. The locking requires MYR coin from the bracket to the camera body other than that, it is pretty much standard stuffs.

Wondering anyone have any more suggestions towards improving this? Please don't suggest things that will add too much to the cost.

Reason is a mark2 is to be made and i am interested to gather feedback to give to this person for a mark2 to be made so that i can get this custom mark2 myself. If anyone else also looking to get this mark2, you can add your name here. So far estimated price to manufacture this mark2 is rm250. If you know the prices of the other known brand flash bracket, you will know that this price is a steal

But important is what do you think is needed on the flash bracket so that it can be more functional for our uses?

Note: this is not a mass or for commercial product. this is a one off custom made bracket purely for our local scene photography people who doesn't have a flash bracket but would want one at a decent price.

Unifi Port Forward Issues + WOL for D-Link DIR-615

Hi all,

Was wondering anyone encountered the same issue? Unable to forward ports on the given D-link DIR-615 router for unifi broadband. Some people reported success while some unsuccessful. Any ideas what other settings to configure other than the one in the "Port Forward" page?

Most threads in lowyat only solve for torrents or still does not have answer to this question for other application port like FTP and RDP, the few common ones.

Thanks.
