National Conference on Gifted Kids 15-16 Nov 2008

Understanding Gifted Children: Facts & Myths
Jointly organized by
- Faculty of Education, UKM
- National Association for Gifted Children, Malaysia
- Yayasan Pelajaran MARA

Date: 15-16 November 2008
Venue: Kompleks Tun Abdullah, Mohd Salleh, UKM, Bangi

Target Audience: Parents, teachers, educationists, psychologists and all those interested in supporting the needs and developing the potential of the gifted child.

About the Conference
Most children develop in very much the same way, but for gifted children there are some distinct differences. For one thing, gifted children tend to reach developmental milestones early. For another, while other children develop physically, emotionally, and cognitively at approximately the same pace, the gifted child's development is uneven or asynchronous.
How can you tell if a child is gifted? There are two main ways: observing characteristics and behaviors, and testing. It has been a dilemma of sorts for parents and teachers to identify giftedness in children. Parents, teachers and the gifted children themselves all need to understand giftedness so that the children will be able to grow to their fullest potential.
This inaugural two-day conference is jointly hosted by the Faculty of Education at UKM, the National Association for Gifted Children, Malaysia (NAGCM), and Yayasan Pelajaran MARA (YPM), and is managed by Talent Enhancement Academy (TEA), UKM Holdings. The objectives of this conference are:
To create a platform for international and local experts to share their understanding of gifted children.
As an avenue for anyone and everyone concerned with giftedness to learn and understand more about it.

The Keynote Sessions
THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS Understanding Gifted Children: Facts and Myths
Our immensely experienced speaker Carolyn K. will address the common myths surrounding gifted children and present the concrete facts that provide the basis for a genuine understanding of such children. And more...

THE KEYNOTE WORKSHOP Testing and Assessment of Gifted Children: What Does It Mean?
We talk about testing gifted children, but what do we really mean? Achievement testing or intelligence testing? Individual or group testing? Standardized tests, or curriculum based assessment? What scores are reported, and what do they mean: standard scores, percentiles, grade-equivalents? Nationally normed, or criterion-referenced? Does it matter? YES! Learn what the tests are (and aren't), how they compare to each other, and how their results apply to the day-to-day reality of the classroom; about the latest IQ test versions, WISC-IV, WPPSI-III and Stanford-Binet 5, and what these new versions mean for gifted children. And more...

KEYNOTE ADDRESS & WORKSHOP SPEAKER
Carolyn K. is founder and director of the internationally renowned Hoagies' Gifted Education Page (www.hoagiesgifted.org) and the Hoagies' Kids and Teens Page (www.hoagieskids.org). She has also served on the Board of Directors for SENG (Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted) (www.SENGifted.org), and currently serves on the advisory board for the Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG) (www.giftedstudy.com).
She was honored at the Gifted Development Center (GDC) 20th anniversary conference as the "Gifted Information Queen of the Internet". She won the 2005 National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC) Community Service Award and the 2006 Pennsylvania Association for Gifted Education (PAGE) Neuber-Pregler Award for Outstanding Advocacy Efforts to Assure Quality Education for the Gifted.

OTHER SPEAKERS

FORUM
Dr Noriah Ishak, UKM
Dr Minni Ang, NAGCM

PARALLEL SESSIONS
Dr Rosadah Abd Majid, UKM
Dr Noriah Ishak, UKM
Mrs Coralie Leong, NAGCM

MALAYSIAN PROGRAMMES
Prof. Datin Dr Siti Rahayah Ariffin, UKM
MoE representative

FORUM and PARALLEL SESSION TOPICS
Individual Education Planning
Identifying Gifted Children in the Classroom
Understanding Children through Drawing
Managing through Emotional Focus
Developing Family Support
Twice Exceptional Children
Programmes for kids to be announced later

Registration Fees
RM 200 (individuals)
NAGCM member rates:
RM 150 or RM 200 per family*
*Meals provided for only 2 adults & 1 child

PLEASE VISIT NAGCM WEBSITE TO DOWNLOAD CONFERENCE REGISTRATION FORMS.
