I was thinking of taking up drums

From noob, to not so noob!

I have finally decided to maybe... take on drumming as a hobby or something of the sort, but as a beginner, I tend to have alot of (problems) questions regarding this peculiar little instrument... If you lads wouldn't mind, I have several questions for you, as a newbie.

Question 1

Posted Sep 16 2012, 11:41 PM

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

SILENCE!

but no you can't. A drum, as its more basic and natural form, are percussion devices and repeated (normal) usage and practice of said instruments are bound to shatter thy neighbour's (ears)

As a fellow person living in a tiny room (which may fit a small size drum set), I was wondering if there are some special variants of drumsets which allow for almost silent drum playing and practice while at the same time maintaining the acoustic harmony of my neighbourhood.

Any leads on what to start or what to get and other information would be well appreciated!

Possible Random fella's reply: you play drums like a man or GTFO

:okay:

Question 2

Posted Oct 14 2012, 01:17 PM

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Are there resources on the web which I can use to learn them drums by myself?

Thanks in advance! I could use all the help I'd be able to get.

Playing with Electronics

tl:dr intro

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Ever had one of those moments when your tamiya racing car broke down and had no idea what was wrong? Or the remote control car that was made in china went awry after sometime? Electronics have been a big part of our life, yet our general understanding of it seems to be not as good as those kids in the industrial age.

Various physicists around the world often bragged at how they tinkered with their toys, making new things out of old, attempting to understand them in the process. We've heard stories about wonderful things that came out of mere tinkering of household appliances, such as the first fixed wing aircraft, etc.

But nowadays (in Malaysia anyway) tinkering with electronics in the name of science and understanding have not been so popular nowadays. Even electrical engineers attribute their first exposure towards electronics only at working, or university stage. (Apart from Kemahiran Hidup in Form 2) Teachers in school seemed so reluctant into explaining how does a transistor work, or why does a capacitor will not work for long in a DC circuit. Its a dying (if not, dead) trend to see kids playing around with these anymore.

My questions is this: If a person, has interest in toying, building, and applying electronic circuitry as a hobby or curiosity, how does one start? What are the essential references that he/she needs, or some club whatsoever, or places to shop and inquire about electronics, that he/she can refer to independently in nurturing this hobby.

If the mods think that this isn't the right place for it, then move it by all means. I'm not talking about how much of a failure our current education system is on nurturing curiosity but HOW do you help nurture a future engineer's curiosity. By all means do advise.

Further Mathematics T

in STPM, there is Mathmatics S, Mathematics T. we all know that.

But then, there is also Further Mathematics T. (only able to take WITH mathematics T)

Comparing the syllabi of both Further Mathematics T (STPM) and Further Mathematics(A Level)

I have found that the A levels counterpart focuses more on calculus, whereas the STPM one is more in depth in both calculus and statistics.

The star online:
STPM pass rate increases

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

KUALA LUMPUR: The percentage of students who passed all their subjects in the 2009 STPM examination increased to 47.7% from 44.1% in 2008.

Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC) chairman Tan Sri Prof Dzulkifli Abdul Razak said the number of students who obtained a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 and above also increased to 35.9%, compared with 31.5% the previous year.

Just under 1%, or 331 students, scored the perfect CGPA of 4.0, said Prof Dzulkifli, who is also Universiti Sains Malaysia vice-chancellor. He announced the results at the MEC headquarters in Selayang near here yesterday.

The number of top achievers — students who scored 5As — also increased by two to 15 students.

Of the 15, two science and three arts students obtained As in all their papers, making them the top scorers in the nation

The trend of students answering in English for Science and Mathematics papers also continued, with 97.5% of candidates answering fully in English, compared with 92.7% in 2008.

The Mathematics papers in particular — Mathematics S, Mathematics T and Further Mathematics T – had more than 98% of candidates answering fully in English.

Asked if the reversal of the teaching of Science and Mathematics to Bahasa Malaysia would affect the STPM, Prof Dzulkifli said: “We haven’t made a decision yet. As long as there is a need, we will continue (what we are doing now).”

Meanwhile, urban students continued to outperform their rural counterparts.

Around 12.1% obtained three to five As, compared with 7.1% of rural candidates.

The difference was especially obvious in the science stream, where 15.6% of urban students scored three to five As versus 4.5% of rural students.

Ten subjects — General Paper, Arabic Language, Literature in English, Malay Literature, History, Geography, Economics, Accounting, Mathematics T and Biology — saw an improvement in their overall pass rates by 2% to 6.5%.

In the meantime, Computing and Sports Science declined by 5.7% and 5.6% respectively, while Further Mathematics T saw only two out of 16 candidates obtaining full passes.

The remaining 10 subjects showed no significant change (less than 2%) in their pass rate.

A total of 52,348 candidates sat for the exam last year at 758 centres across the country. Of this, only 8,776 (16.8%) were science students, while 13,205 (25.2%) sat for five subjects.

Right now, I might be taking STPM, and as I do not intend to take up biology, Further Mathematics T seems to be a good choice to be the 4th subject besides Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics T (refer top)

But right now, all I want to know is:

What is so good about Further Mathematics T? Say If i take only Mathematics T, the syllabus falls short from the syllabus of Further Mathematics from A levels. Yet, STPM is harder? What about Further Mathematics T then?

Of course, for those who actually took Further Mathematics T for STPM , please do provide your views on this.
Well this is what i had encountered when filling a scholarship form.

a copy of "few months latest salary slip + income statement/ supporting documents to denote your parent's status" as one of the document copies to be submitted.

This may be a seemingly unimportant question but..

What happens if my parents have no income?

What do I put there?

Strays (or not) and their crap load of...

*SHOO SHOO SHOO SCRAM!!!*

That's me. Every single day in the morning.

Everyday, without fail, a cat (stray or not) comes in to my house and starts to 'unload' their stomach luggage every now and then. If they come in for a rest, I don't mind but unloading crap onto my lawn is downright annoying. My family could not resist the horrid, putrid crap smell, and my cruel dad once offered a suggestion to place cracked glass shards in a piece of meat and placing it outdoors.. (Much to my objection)

But I can't seem to find any other solution. Note that our furry feline visitors aren't exactly regular (Yes, different visitors every now and then)

Advice please? Or i'll just like, proceed by breaking some glass bottles....

Parents and the Perfect Career

I have a good friend. She is considered having profound arts interests and skills, and she even had an A+ for arts despite being in the pure science stream. She draws extremely well, infact. But then, came her dad.

Her dad, on the other hand, is a person who would want their kids to go for the 'ideal' career, e.g. architect, lawyer, doctor, engineer, accountant, and so on. She insisted that she wanted to take up arts in college, but he instead wanted her to take up architecture as a career path. His excuses were because she likes to draw horses, spiders, humans, during her free time, which i knew had nothing to do with built environments as they were... biological.

And you guessed it, being in pure science was mainly his idea. She struggled through secondary school, chewed through add maths and biology even though she was against it, besides studying hard for arts. Surely she didn't performed too well as those weren't her interests, yet her dad kept pushing her further and further down the architecture route though she wanted out.

Even then, he told his friends that 'my daughter LOVED architecture' and it was 'entirely her choice'.

He even added 'as long as my daughter is interested, she gets to choose the right path'

I feel sorry for her. She never had a wink of interest in those fields, and was even forced against her will to take another. And the 'career without interest would ruin her future' trick is old and useless. He's just too headstrong with his idea of a perfect career, influenced by his current job which collaborates often with architects. Whatever the reason is, whatever my friend says would never get to his head.

So, fellow LYNmates, i would kindly ask for your advice, which i would convey to her, as she is very very troubled by these situations.

Her dad to her : Eh, since your sejarah also quite good (grade A), why don't you study law when you're free?

Currently not being suicidal but... Chances are she would, under pressurised circumstances.

Remember the need to apply for public universities and matriculation programmes? Well it is required for you to actually get the PIN from BSN called Unik ID.

Okay, then came the UPU application form. Which requires me to key in my PIN as written on the BSN slip.

But... Somehow it went missing. End of the world (in terms of public university application) for me?

i have tonnes of flat pdf forms to be submits via the internet. however, filling them up is a pain as i do not see how to.

I have checked several helpsites but the help they provide is only for acrobat reader 9 standard, which is not free, at all. converting a flat form to an interactive form isn't a feature for free software people like me.

i would like to know, without getting any priced software, am i able to fill up these forms? i've tried converting them to .doc but filling it somehow or rather deforms the forms themselves.

any tips? tricks that i have missed out? I hope this gets answered as i do not believe filling up flat forms on computers requires payment = =

[addedon]January 21, 2010, 11:39 pm[/addedon]-closed- found blueberry pdf form filler
