[WTA] Speakers & cabinets

Hi guys, I recently took up interest in getting a good pair of speakers so that I can share the music with my friends when they come over. Using headphones is kinda anti-social with friends around xD

I discovered tektondesign.com, with their model 4.5. I'd immediately get a pair but the USD130 shipping cost is killing me. The two speakers weigh 35 pounds (15.88kg)

All-in, the tekton speakers (model 4.5) cost around SGD700, GST, shipping all included. I could get a DIY alternative at around SGD400.

The main difference (and maybe the only difference) is the cabinet. Tekton speaker's cabinet seems to be made by a 'master craftsman', accurately measured and crafted, with high quality MDF wood.

Both the tekton speakers and the DIY alternative use the same fostex fe127e 4.5" drivers.

I plan to run this out of a T-amp (8W per channel), so this system would cost around SGD800 for the tekton, or SGD500 for the DIY alternative.

Which would better, with regards to the cost? I have never heard of either before, so my main questions are:

1) Do the quality of the cabinets really affect the sound? and in this case do they justify a SGD300 price premium?

2) At SGD500 for the DIY alternative, would it be better to simply get active speakers like the audioengine A5s?

and any other tips and opinions would be much appreciated; while I have some experience with headphones, I have no idea where to start with speakers. Thanks!

Help - Java not loading on Firefox

Java isn't loading on my firefox, need help! I'm using Vista Ultimate x64, with java 6 runtime 13.

I have both 32bit and 64bit versions of java installed. IE7 works with the 64-bit version, while mozilla is supposed to work with the 32bit version.

With only the 64-bit java installed, mozilla can't even recognise java applets and asks me to download the plugin. This is expected I guess.

But with 32-bit java, the notice to 'download plugin' isn't present. Instead of the java applet it's simply blank in place of where the java applet is supposed to be.

Mozilla's Tools -> Java Console is also present but greyed out. I've attached a screenshot.

[attachmentid=870099]

Under 32-bit java control panel, advanced tab, "Default Java for browsers", Mozilla family is checked.

How do I solve this problem? I have AVG free installed, if that could possibly conflict with mozilla and java (dont think so though)

Stumped.

Need recommendation for speakers ~SGD300/RM750

Hi all. I need a recommendation for speakers. Don't mind getting 2nd hand.

What I'm searching for is the MOST COST EFFECTIVE, best bang-for-buck sound quality for my 2.0 / 2.1 speakers.

Primarily used for music. If used for movies will pair with my old 2.1 edifier speakers, will be using those as the rear speaks (Dont know if it's a good idea, but surround sound sounds good for movies)

Budget around RM750. Was looking at 2nd hand Audioengine A2/ A5s.. Aego Ms... Esi Near04s.... Those are the consumer models, but I'm wondering if there's any DIY options available that would have an unbeatable sound quality for ~300bucks?

From what I understand, DIY needs a power amp, 2 drivers, and capacitors (no idea what the caps are used for). But I'm totally at a loss at what components to get.

For a DAC i have a modded zero / compass / modded x-fi, while for a preamp I guess my darkvoice 337 would be more than suitable.

but then again RM750 seems like too low a price to get a decent set of DIY speakers, from what I've seen in forums. So maybe I will just go for the A2/A5/esi04/aego M.

Any suggestions? Thanks much!

Oh and, I didn't post it in the 2.1/5.1 recommendation thread because this is 2.0 speakers

WTA: If I get new harddisk..

I have a 250GB hard disk in my com. Getting a 1TB next week, cos my com no space already.

Is it possible to move every single file from the 250GB hard disk to my 1TB hard disk? My OS is installed in the 250GB one as well. I want to create an identical clone in the 1TB hard drive, so that I don't have to reinstall anything.

Like, move the OS to the 1TB hard disk, then can just boot from the 1tb.

Is this possible? how do i do it? Thanks!

Sennheiser IE8

Saw tons of threads on sennheiser headphones, but not a single one on it's IEMs.

Sennheiser finally broke into the market with a lineup of IE6, IE7 and IE8.. Being a big fan of sennheiser headphones myself, I couldn't resist but to order my own set.

Initially I wanted to sell mine away to save up for the HD650 but finally decided just to keep it. After I saw the reviews on head-fi I just couldn't resist! Even found a supplier giving a good price and started a bulk here at LYN

QUOTE(Duncan @ headfi)

My IEMs in order of preference: Sennheiser IE8 -> UE TF10 Pro -> Sony EX700 -> Shure E500 -> Shure E5C -> Shure E4C

I can definitely see these IEMs as a new FOTM, and also as a new contender of best universal IEM - They really are that good - Sennheiser may well be late to market, but - it looks like they have done their research!!

Really excited about this pair of IEMs.. They're really close contenders to the Westone 3, many people have a tough time deciding between these two IEMs!

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

QUOTE(DavidMahler @ headfi)

Ranking purely in terms of sound quality
1. Westone 3
2. UE10
3. IE8
4. SE530
5. Triple Fis
6. EX700
7. UM2
8. ER4P
9. SE420
10. 2XS (but it really doesn't belong on this scale at all)

Ranking in terms of sound quality in conjunction with comfort
1. Westone 3
2. IE8
3. SE530
4. UM2
5. Triple Fis
6. UE10
7. SE420
8. ER4P
9. EX700
10. 2XS

Personally, I tried these IEMs out in Singapore.. Compared them to the Westone 3. I've always been a fan of UEs, but when I listened to the sennheisers, it really blew me away.. The detail and accuracy is just there, perfect for me man. As for the westone 3? Never been a fan of their sound.. Had the UM1, tried the UM2, westone 3.. Really found the sound not to my liking. To me it sounded muddy, and it was a big no-no in the clarity department. Perhaps that explains the sudden flooding of W3s in the FS forum at head-fi. (Perhaps?)

Any Senn IEM users here as well?
