Meet d multilingual robot newscaster w/ human face

The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) on Tuesday unveiled three humanoid robots that are to be put on display so visitors can interact with them.

Two of the machines were modeled on actual human forms, using special silicone and artificial muscles that resemble and move like the real thing.

Named Otonaroid (Adultroid) and Kodomoroid (Childroid), the robots are able to perform a number of tasks, including welcoming visitors to the museum in Tokyo’s Odaiba district — a job they were to start Wednesday.

Otonaroid resembles a woman. It sits on a couch and responds to comments and is said to be able to carry on a general conversation.

Visitors will be invited to control the machine, prompting it to speak and see its facial expressions change.

Kodomoroid resembles a human child. Its developer bills it as the world’s first robot news reader, saying it can deliver news from around the world.

There is also another robot called Telenoid that is about the size of a baby. It, too, will interact with visitors and can be remotely controlled in the same way as Otonaroid.

The exhibition, titled “Androids — What is Human?” aims to explore what makes humans tick.

The machines were developed by Hiroshi Ishiguro, a professor at Osaka University who specializes in humanoid robotics.

“We’ve been wanting to exhibit Mr. Ishiguro’s robots for a long time . . . we are very excited,” said Mahoro Uchida, who heads the museum’s exhibition development division.

Uchida said the exhibition is expected to run for at least three years.

Ishiguro said his research has focused heavily on the nature of humanity and he designs robots to explore that question.

“To create something that helps humans, we need to know what humans are,” he said.

---
tl;dr
Otonaroid = Adultroid
Kodomoroid = Childroid
both androids :
- are able to perform a number of tasks
- are able to communicate w/ facial expressions as well
- will be at display in the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) for min. 3 years
---

Original sos

Slight preview of Saxbot will be at 1:21 in the video provided at the sos below
More complete sos

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Slightly related picture

The development of robots that could save lives is an unparalleled breakthrough, but what if they also could kill?

In May 2014, the UN held its first convention to debate whether killer robots should be banned. It was public recognition of how far designers have come in creating machines that could independently make the decision to kill, eliminating humans from the equation.

Nowhere did the debate resonate more loudly than Japan, the world leader in robotics. Spurred on by the Fukushima disaster, Japanese designers are leading a resurgence in intelligent, humanoid machines.

But while some innovators are creating them to save lives, critics fear others are building them to kill.

101 East asks could Japan’s latest generation of robots do more harm than good?

Sources :
Al Jazeera
UN Convention on Robot

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Involved parties (in sequence):
Robot Restaurant
Honda (ASIMO)
Fukushima Nuclear Reactor S&R
SCHAFT Inc.
How many of you celebrate White Day?

TOKYO — With Valentine’s Day over and done with, White Day (March 14) is just around the corner. This is the day in Japan where men are obliged to return the gifts of Valentine’s Day chocolates to the women who gifted them, or else send a clear message that the feeling isn’t mutual by not bothering.

However, many guys have trouble choosing the right gifts for women, so Krispy Kreme Japan is holding a special workshop to teach an exclusive group of guys how to make romantic gifts out of their donuts.

This event is called the White Day Donuts Remake Lesson and is a part of Krispy Kreme Japan’s “Donuts Remake” series of lectures where they teach new ways to enjoy their pastries through creative decoration.

In this lesson on March 6, food coordinator Ryoko Shimizu will teach 10 male guests how to make a “Parfait Tailored Donuts Necklace” and a “Ring Ring Donuts” which are sure to make any girl’s heart melt like a rich sugary glaze.

For the rest of us who can’t get in, the donut chain has thrown us a bone and provided instructions on how to make the two treats on their website. Also, we can be sure that more Donuts Remake sessions will be had.
