Favourite Android Apps for 2013?

Here are some of the android apps I use. Note that I only use the essentials as the more apps you have installed and are running, the less CPU and memory resources are available. I also keep the number of widgets and apps on my homescreen as well as the number of homescreens to a minimum and don't use bells and whistles such as live wallpapers and animations.

Pros:

Student responses can be creative – written, drawn, voice recorded or video recorded (e.g. podcasts). Children have a stronger preference for these mediums.

Can be seen as a tool that motivates and engages students in their studies (e.g. more contributions to class discussions via twitter). Various studies still differ on how technology impacts academic performance.

21st century skill sets essential for the modern workplace are developed along with a global perspective on issues.

Can video conference with teachers, other students and guest speakers from around the globe.

Parents can be informed of children’s progress at school via web based blogs.

It is lighter to carry textbooks in electronic format rather than having to lug a bag of hardcopy textbooks around.

Typing is faster than handwriting though you can use a digital pen on an iPad.

Cons:

More expensive than pen an paper

Dependency on technology for learning – may not be skilled or aware of traditional learning sources such as the use of library books.

Can be a distraction with the multitude of non-educational apps at student’s disposal as well as access to social media, chatrooms etc on the internet

Online social media are readily accessible to the detriment of the development of interpersonal conversational skills, social and emotional development. Essentially interaction is with the technology rather than directly with another person.

Social networking exposes students to inappropriate material, sexual predators, cyber bullying etc

Though the knowledge available in the internet is unlimited the correctness and accuracy of information is questionable.

Hampered by slow connections to the school network, slow boot times, virus scans, flat batteries and so on. In addition to this crashes could result in data loss and reverse workflow.

Will take more time, energy and cost to secure and monitor uses of technologies.

Grammar and handwriting skills are affected as students become reliant on typing and spellcheckers.

What is the age limit for receiving an Ang Pow

I can't find a definitive answer for this. If the relative is working but unmarried, at what age can s/he still receive an ang pao? There must surely be an age limit. Wouldn't it be awkward giving ang pao to 50 yr old single person?
Does old unmarried person have to give to younger relatives?

Playstation 4

One of the newest gaming consoles that is being anticipated is the Playstation 4. Since the Playstation 3 is still brand-new to many people, and has incorporated military grade video cards into its creation, it’s hard to imagine what the Playstation 4 will bring. One of the most shocking things for many people is that Playstation might be abandoning its cell processor, and returning to the old x86 design in order to keep things backwards compatible. Another possibility is that the engineers of Playstation’s latest creation will be moving to ARM technology instead. Either way, there is a lot of buzz about the PS4. Creators have also mentioned that they will be making a similar connection to Xbox Live, and will add Kinect-like capabilities to the latest Playstation. It’s expected to hit the shelves somewhere between 2012 and 2015.

Xbox 720
Similarly, Xbox will be unleashing the new Xbox 720 in either 2012 or 2013. It will also be one of the major players when it comes to the shift from stationary, button pushing video games to motion controlled gaming. Like the much anticipated PS4, the new 720 will have motion-controlled gaming, sharper graphics, and Xbox Live capabilities. Microsoft is looking to make the latest Xbox one of high quality, and one which will have a long span. As far as the current Xbox 360 goes, Microsoft has vowed that they will continue support of it “as long as it is being sold.”

NVIDIA’s Kepler

As far as video cards go, NVIDIA’s Kepler model is the most anticipated release, and it’s expected to go on the shelves as early as 2012. This video card is expected to triple the already stunning performance of the current Fermi model. For gamers, this means faster graphics, sharper pictures, and even better game play. Maxwell, Kepler’s next-of-kin, will be released in 2013, with even more impressive stats.

Facial recognition in iPhone 5 - your thoughts?

Currently there has been a fair bit of discussion on privacy concerns surrounding the implementation of facial recognition software to several apps. The technology is already available and if used in conjunction with an extensive database which can be yielded from social networks such as facebook or the new google+ network and implemented into youtube, google+ photo sharing, google image search etc can have huge potential to breach our privacy.

This hasn’t stopped Apple from recently acquiring Polar Rose, a company that co-developed the facial recognition app Recognizr. This software has not been used in Apple’s proprietary iOS apps to date though it has already been implemented in Photo Booth for the X Lion OS. Apple has also allowed 3rd party developers to integrate facial recognition algorithms into their own apps. Examples of these include the CIFaceFeature API which analyzes a picture to determine the relative location of a person’s eyes and mouth and CIDetector which processes those images for recognition...

Leaked photos show that the iPhone 5 will look extremely different than the iPhone 4. With a curved and more ergonomic design, the iPhone 5’s body will be more similar to that of the iPhone 3G rather than the boxy iPhone 4 design.

Rumor has it that the iPhone 5 will have an edge-to-edge display screen. Although it’s impossible to be certain from the photos, it appears that this may be true. Whatever the case, it’s almost certain that the display will be larger than ever before with CultofMac claiming that it will grow in size from 3.7- to 4-inches and will continue to keep the Retina Display resolution.

The subtraction of the Home button will make a huge change in the iPhone 5. Rather than having the button we have grown so used to, the Home button will be removed to make room for a capacitive strip. This strip will be used for multi-touch gesturing. Buttons which are usually located on both sides of the phone are said to only be located on one side with the iPhone 5 and, like the new strip, may also be capacitive...
