LAN connection problem

Hi guys,

This happened yesterday night. There was a huge thunderstorm at my place, and I didn't get to shut down my computer in time for the lightning strike. So there was some "flash or whatever you call it" and a loud "tak" sound coming from my CPU.

After the storm was over, I went to check my computer, everything was fine but the LAN connection. My mobo has 2 LAN ports, so I suspected the 1st port that I've been using is spoilt as there was no orange blinking light anymore, so I went to use the 2nd port, the blinking orange light was on. But still no internet connection.

I'm currently using the wireless connection, but the wireless adaptor of mine is kinda retarted. After 5 hours of usage, it will lag the computer, like every 10 seconds or so, which was why I used the LAN connection in the 1st place.

So I was thinking that BOTH my LAN port is broken, and I went to test the LAN cable on my laptop. Also no connection.

Now I am confused which is broken.

Is it the modem? LAN cable? or my computer's LAN port.

If the LAN port is broken, I was thinking of just buying a LAN port adaptor for the pci slot (this does exist right?) just sending it for warranty takes forever.

Can you guys help me out on this?

Question about motherboard

I'm just recently bought a 2GB DDR2 800Mhz for my motherboard, but once I inserted into the motherboard, it makes 3 beeps stating there is no memory.

I'm currently using Intel® Desktop Board D945PLRN, it only has 2 pins and it is said to be designed to support up to 2GB of system memory. So I was wondering whether 1GB is the maximum limit for each pin since it doesn't work when I used the 2GB on my motherboard.

The motherboard is only temporary while I continuously upgrade the remaining part of my rig (mainly the HDD, motherboard and processor left to be upgraded).

So I was wondering whether I should change the 2GB RAM into 2x1GB and then buy another 2x1GB to make it a 4GB or just upgrade now and buy a single 2GB later to make it a 4. Is there any difference in performance between a 4x1GB and a 2x2GB?

Btw, would you guys give me a HDD, mobo and processor recommendation as well?

Would prefer >500GB HDD (my brother is a download freak) and an Intel processor. Budget to be around RM1k.

Thanks in advance.

About PSU

I'm looking to buy the Cooler Master Extreme Power 460W and 500W. The PSU is for my 4-year-old rig which is temporary while I slowly upgrade the remaining parts into a whole new rig.

But I'm a bit clueless in the PSU part about the peak power and real power thingy, and am wondering whether my 500W would be sufficient to last for at least another 3-4 years with constant upgrades to the pc. I am not an extreme gamer, no SLI or CF, just plain simple CPU, RAM, GC.

I've checked with the PSU calculator about my rig, its recommended PSU wattage is 300W but is that peak power or real power (or something like that)?

Thanks in advance.

About RAM

I'm planning to buy 2x1gb RAM 667mhz for my 4-year-old mobo. My mobo only supports up to 533mhz but my friend told me that it will be downclocked to 533mhz and since the 667mhz ones are cheaper, I might as well buy the 667 rather than the 533mhz.

So here's the question. The ram I am buying are only temporary as I might be getting a new rig later next year, so I will be using the RAM I just mentioned for the new rig, should I buy the 800mhz ones instead of the 667mhz since the new mobo will most probably be able to support it?

Is there a lot of difference in terms of performance between these 2? Will there be any problem if I buy the 800mhz ones and use it on my current mobo?

Thanks in advance.
