Corruption causing high property prices in KL

Graft causing high property prices a 'possibility', says DBKL adviser

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) advisory board member Rizalman Mokhtar said high property prices in the city as a result of corruption was a "possibility".

"The possibility of (corruption as) a contributing factor is definitely there but it is still too early for us to justify the investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

"If the rakyat wants to know, we also want to know...," Rizalman told reporters when met after flagging off the Information Department's Jalur Gemilang Merdeka convoy at the Bandar Tun Razak fire station in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Rizalman, who is also DBKL housing committee chairperson, was asked if the recent DBKL graft case exposed by the MACC contributed to the high prices of properties in city and the disproportionate number of high-end developments.

The MACC on Aug 16 arrested a senior DBKL official with the "datuk seri" title who is believed to own 31 luxury condominiums worth RM15.5 million which he purported received for collaborating with housing developers.

The MACC reportedly described the alleged corruption as being at an "unprecedented scale" and will be questioning at least 30 more DBKL officers on the matter.

SOS: https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/353863

RM1mil reward offered to expose Mahathir

The Citizens for Accountable Governance Malaysia (CAGM) has offered a reward of up to RM1 million for information about alleged wrongdoing by Dr Mahathir Mohamad during his 22 years as prime minister.

"CAGM is prepared to offer hefty rewards to individuals who can provide substantial information and evidence that can lead to the recovery of hidden cash and assets belonging to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad," said the NGO chairperson Md Zainal Abidin in a press statement today.

The NGO was only set up a month ago just as Mahathir intensified attacks against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over alleged financial wrongdoing to demand his resignation.

SOS: http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/300185

(But) the rakyat have taken everything from me...

“Everything has been taken away from me, including my time, including my hobbies. I don't get to play badminton now because I am very busy doing things for the rakyat.

“If that is still not right then I don't know what to say,” she said in her speech when officiating the National Crafts Day 2014 at the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex.

Rosmah, who was speaking on batik design, said that she even complained to her husband Najib Abdul Razak that she cannot even wear “pretty clothes” now.

“He said, ‘you can wear pretty clothes, it's not true that you can't’.”

'Choose bright colours'

Sharing her passion for fashion with batik manufacturers in the audience, she had many tips on how to match colours, designs and to keep abreast with the latest trends.

Rosmah said that batik pieces should follow themes, and not be mixed with everything under the sun, so much so that it looks like someone is wearing a “tsunami”.

“It must please the eyes. You can follow a theme but it shouldn't be a tsunami theme or a volcano theme.

“For people to look at you when you wear something on your body, it has to be very attractive, soothing (so that) they want to look at you over and over again,” she said.

She added that a friend who had just returned from Paris had informed her that the colours of the season are bright colours such as yellow and purple, so batik manufacturers should not produce pale designs if they are eyeing overseas markets.

“This is my advice, whatever it's worth, to my batik suppliers. Some like it bright, some like it very pale. I'm one person who likes it bright so those who want to supply batik to me must look for bright colours and uncluttered designs,” she said.

Video SOS: http://www.kinitv.com/video/4335O8
Story SOS: http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/255620
Mobile still can access but TM users cannot access.

IF you guys can access / cannot access, please share what ISP you are using.

LINK: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-25730815

UPDATE 12:00pm - TM hit panic button and unblock after all the media report about it:

http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/251923
http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysi...ort-on-kangkung
http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia...c-kangkung-page

FULL STORY ACCESSED USING PROXY:

#BBCtrending: Be careful what you say about spinach

Malaysia's prime minister is being widely lampooned on social media for a comment he made about the price of kangkung, or water spinach.

Food is a faux pas minefield for politicians, especially when it's perceived as being used in a get-down-with-the-people kind of way - think of British Prime Minister David Cameron's pasty moment or Chancellor George Osborne's "posh burger" tweet. The almost inevitable response seems to be ridicule. That's where the Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak finds himself right now. With the government under fire because of price hikes in basics like fuel and electricity, he chose to push back by highlighting a reduction in the cost of the leafy green vegetable kangkung.

Kangkung - also known as water spinach, morning glory and Chinese spinach - is widely eaten in Malaysia, and is cooked as a stir-fry with a little garlic or chilli paste. But it's cheap, grows wild alongside streams, paddy fields and drains, and is not considered a staple. Moments after a video of the prime minister was posted making the comments, the sarcasm and jokes began to trend on social media in Malaysia. There have been hundreds of thousands of tweets, a Facebook page set up - with 10,000 followers already - a YouTube re-mix of his comments, the lyrics to popular and traditional folk songs have been re-worked, and "Keep calm and eat kangkung" T-shirts have been made and rushed to market.

"Kangkung-gate", as it's been dubbed by some, has hit a nerve because many people are struggling with the rising cost of living, and are resentful of what they regard as corruption, and lavish spending by the government. Unsurprisingly many opposition politicians - including Anwar Ibrahim - have seized on the opportunity to join in the collective fun-poking. The story has been so big on social media that many have complained of their timelines being clogged up. "This kangkung obsession is fast becoming a laughing stalk," tweeted comedian Kuah Jenhan. "Lettuce get to the root of the problem. We have mushroom for improvement."

Reporting by Cordelia Hebblethwaite

Comedian Kuah Jenhan will be a guest on BBC Trending on BBC World Service on Saturday at 11:30 GMT - subscribe to the podcast here

Jonker street kolos because support DAP

Malacca new Chief Minister Harun Idrus said he want kolos Jonker walk because they support DAP over MCA.
SOS: Kwong Wah

DAP marah oledi: SOS: Malaysiakini

Opposition: Closure of Jonker Walk is political retaliation

The Malacca government's decision to shut down the historic city's popular weekend night market, Jonker Walk, has been described as "political retaliation against Chinese voters" who backed the opposition in the May 5 general election.

The DAP's Kesidang assemblyperson Chin Choong Seong questioned the justification given by Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron that the decision was made after MCA's abysmal showing in GE13.

"Obviously this is an undemocratic retaliation by the BN against the Chinese community, by creating fear. Such a shameful act will not achieve its objective. Instead, it will alienate the people more," Chin said in a statement issued today.

According to Kwong Wah Daily, Idris yesterday argued that the decision passed by the Malacca executive council on June 12 to close the night market, which has been attracting tourists for 13 years, "follows the intention of the people".

Idris reminded that it was DAP that protested against the state government's decision to cordon off Jonker Street from road users, to make way for the night market, when the idea was first mooted.

That time, he said, the DAP slammed the state government for sacrificing the interests of road users to benefit only some 200 hawkers.

Idris: We hope the people will be happy

"Now, we see most of the Malacca residents fully supporting DAP over MCA candidates, who have been serving them. Hence, we decided to cancel the night market and we hope they will be happy," the daily quotes Idris as saying.

He admitted that MCA's electoral defeat in the state prompted the closure of Jonker Walk.

Although Jonker Walk has become a popular tourist attraction in the state, Idris said he was not worried about impact of the closure as there were other tourist destinations in Malacca.

The closure prompted some 100 hawkers to stage a protest rally at Jonker Street last night.

Armed with posters and shouting slogans against the closure, the angry hawkers marched a short distance through the street.

They also said they would set up their stalls and proceed with their businesses on Friday, despite the state government directive to close the night market.

Birds dropping dead

THOUSANDS OF BIRDS FALL FROM THE SKY

(CNN) -- Arkansas game officials hope testing scheduled to begin Monday will solve the mystery of why up to 5,000 blackbirds fell from the sky just before midnight New Year's Eve.

The birds -- most of which were dead -- were found within a one-mile area of Beebe, about 40 miles northeast of Little Rock, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said. The blackbirds fell over about a one-mile area, the commission said in a statement.

As of Saturday, between 4,000 and 5,000 blackbirds had been found dead, said Keith Stephens with the commission.

"Shortly after I arrived, there were still birds falling from the sky," said commission wildlife officer Robby King in the statement. He said he collected about 65 dead birds.

The commission said it flew over the area to gauge the scope of the event, and no birds were found outside of the initial one-mile area.

Karen Rowe, an ornithologist for the commission, said the incident is not that unusual and is often caused by a lightning strike or high-altitude hail.
A strong storm system moved through the state earlier in the day Friday.

Officials also speculated that fireworks shot by New Year's revelers in the area might have caused severe stress in the birds. Rowe said Sunday there was evidence that large fireworks may have played a role.

Biologists believe the deaths were stress-related from either fireworks or weather, Stephens said.

"Since it only involved a flock of blackbirds and only involved them falling out of the sky, it is unlikely they were poisoned, but a necropsy is the only way to determine if the birds died from trauma or toxin," Rowe said.

The dead birds will be sent for testing to labs at the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission and the National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin.
The necropsies will begin Monday, Stephens said, and the findings should be available sometime this week.

The city of Beebe has hired U.S. Environmental Services to begin the cleanup and dispose of the dead birds, the commission said. The firm's workers will go door-to-door and pick up birds still in yards and on rooftops.

Source:http://edition.cnn.com/2011/US/01/02/arkan...dex.html?hpt=C1
