Another similar question that's been asked before, do titles matter?

A bit of background, I have a fair amount of experience, working in the IT industry. While looking for a job recently, I've been offered a few roles. The first is an IT Director role for in KL, salary bracket is in the upper range of Robert Walters' salary survey. Second is a solutions architect role in Sydney, also close to the upper end of the salary range in Robert Walters.

After taxes, both positions pay roughly the same amount monthly when converted to RM. I'm ignoring the cost of living differences between KL and Sydney for now.

The attraction for the IT Director role is the title. At least in my thinking, director level positions will lead to more Director/VP/CxO level positions. At least when negotiating with companies, I found that salaries are a lot more open ended and less constrained within these sort of titles.

The attraction to the solutions architect role is company culture (I have other friends working there) and quite frankly the weather. However I will be stuck in another mid-level role within middle management, with no clear timeline on where/how I can get to a senior management position.

So do titles matter? I want to earn as much money as possible Opinions welcome.

Edit: what's not clearly stated above is that my objective is long term money (hence the concern about titles) but I am also concerned about company culture, if I don't fit in a company then I can't excel. I know I can fit very well in the second offer...

Title inflation and the next job

So I've been with this company for awhile and I've decided to look outside for my next career move. The company is a smaller US based multinational, and generally doesn't give out grand titles. Essentially my title is Team Lead, I have the responsibilities of a senior manager (regional people and budget responsibility) and have the salary of a director according to Robert Walters/Kelly surveys.

Any ideas on how a guy with 15 years of experience in IT can make the jump to VP/director level roles? Recruiters haven't been much help. Going direct to the hiring managers or even the C-suite has been more fruitful but I've not landed any interesting jobs yet. Somehow I get the feeling that I'd have more luck at least getting the foot in the door if I had a grander title

Local vs MNC, technical vs management

Voicing my thoughts out loud. I'm being offered two positions. One as an IT manager at a small American oil & gas service company, another as a VP at a Malaysian public listed telco. Both paying roughly the same (250-300k annual, good benefits, 3-6 months bonus)

IT manager role:

- Asia Pac regional scope, focused on specialist seismic/subsurface technical stuff
- small team of ~6 people
- some regional travel involved
- some growth opportunities within the company, but unclear
- less time pressure, assumption is that I can continue my online consulting gig

I like this role because it's focused and specialized and I can be more agile/flexible/entrepreneurial. I also like that I can continue to run my consulting and diversify my income a bit. However there's limited visibility and I will always wonder if I am too expensive for the company? Will they suddenly hire a younger person at 70% of the cost even at 50% of my capability?

VP role:

- Malaysian scope, focus on business development on the technical/IT side reporting to the COO
- minimal travel
- lots of growth opportunities and very visible role
- more time pressure

I like this role because it's putting me in the senior management position, lots of growth within the company and lots of visibility outside the company. What I don't like is the lack of flexibility in a the typical large company.

At my age (late 30s) I assume that most people would go for the VP job, but I still wonder. Hm...

Working life in China

I searched and didn't find much info on this on LYN. Just wondering if anyone's had much experience working in China specifically Beijing. I've been offered a post in Beijing but it's not a full expat position so while I get flights, housing and medical insurance, food and transportation are on me. I've googled and it seems like the cost of living is maybe 30% higher than KL but not outrageous.

Any other things I should be aware of? Anyone living there now?

Social gaming platform for feature phones

I've been thinking about this for a few weeks, thought I might get some input from you guys. I'm thinking of developing a service to allow gaming updates/messages/etc to go to feature phones from your typical Flash based social network games. So in essence:

Flash game on the web <-> my service <-> feature phones

The idea is that you play most of the time on the web (Farmville, Mafia Wars etc) but you can still get updates and send responses even if you don't have a smartphone. It started with this idea because for a very long time, unless you had an iPhone and to a lesser extent an Android phone, you're kind of out of luck and are stuck with snake or some other Nokia phone game. Most major developers don't want to redevelop their app for non-smart phones, first because they don't think there is a market out there and second, there are way too many different feature phones to aim for.

In short, if you're a developer with a Flash based game, would you pay money for a service like this? Second is the technical question of what's possible and what's not, I've done PHP/Python/Java/C++ stuff but none on Flash.

I'm happy to hear comments, both good and bad
