Hippo Shroom EB!

Let me introduce you... TO:
HIPPO SHROOM EB "Extra Bass"

Specs:

Driver: Single 6mm Dynamic
Sensitivity: 95dB + 4 SPL / mW
Impedance: 16Ohm @ 1 kHz
Frequency Response: 10Hz - 20 kHz
Cord: 1.25m
Plug: Gold-Plated Stereo 3.5mm Mini-Plug
Weight: 0.8g

Price sold at Jaben *MY* : RM190.00

Out of the Box:

Build Quality:

- Packed inside a plastic box, with a clear window at the upper half of the box.
- The Package comes with: 1x Hippo Shroom EB, 1x HippoCase Pouch, 6 pairs of Silicon Flange: 4x small , 4x medium, 4x large (with alternate colours of red and blue)

- Small, round metal cylinder body and very lightweight. Easily, fits deep inside the ear and feels weightless. This makes it really comfortable to wear surprisingly, and I can pretty much sleep while wearing it without much trouble (I doubt I would have one given that I can sleep with Crossroad Woody1, which is actually very bulky).

- Though I would advice you not to use it roughly, it is... pretty FRAGILE. The connectors connecting to the driver as well as the wire is not sturdy enough to withstand rough usage, and would probably prone to accident if not handled properly.

Sound Quality: -First Impression-

Bass: Although it is there but it doesn't give much of an impact. Well, probably due to its 6mm driver. But it will probably performs much more better after burn in. The Mid bass is there, but the low bass... is recessed and doesn't really exist much. Bass is something you would probably consider skipping Shroom EB, if you are a bass head. It is there, but the impact is low, lacks the feeling of BooM!! BooM!! to it.

Vocals: Vocals are recessed, but, overall it still sounds full and there aren't much missing. Positioning is probably the main thing that it lacks as well as smoothness of how the vocal being delivered. Sharpness is present as well with the vocals.

Treble: Are good, and detailed, plays instruments nicely. But, when there is a lot of highs being played at the same time, it tends to get congested.

Overall: it is rough out of the box and bright out of the edges, positioning is something that it lacks. And, it does gives me headache after some listening time. But, it gives a lot of details for something that is out of the box and feels quite full. Clarity would most likely improve after burning in.

Song tested with: Lia - My Soul, Your Beats!.flac

Rig: Direct connection with Hippo Gumstick.

Alternate Rig: Sansa Clip+, with Clip+, Shroom EB can pretty much deliver most of the details excepts for few parts in the Highs, which is present in Hippo Gumstick. *Muddy*

Score:

Bass: 2

Vocals: 3

Treble: 3

Sound Quality: After 100h+

Bass: The low bass has increased quite a bit as well as mid bass which is more prominently increased... but the increase is still minor if compared to other higher end IEMs. It feels as though it is just there to complete the details, and nothing else, there's no crunchiness or solidness that can be felt.

Vocals: This has quite markedly improved, although not to the extent of being really good but sufficiently good for something of that price range. There's a solid feel to it as well as the feeling of vocal that is more forward than the usual.

Highs: Becomes more defined and more details are prominent. Strings and guitars are quite nice to listen to.

Overall: Seperations increased (by a good margin), less sharp than the first time I received it. The Bright signature is still an issue with my tolerance towards listening. All the details are pretty much there, but there aren't any special characteristics and it is not as clear as a normal mid range IEMs would, like Quattro or Woody series. Transition of sounds are much more smoother as well. It is probably a bit "veiled" as that of Eterna, but Fischer Audio Eterna *V1 gives a very solid bass in place in which gives it a character, but quite balanced in overall.

In terms of SQ, it is more towards Quattro sound signature compared to Hippo VB, but overall, it is like a lil brother of Quattro in which it lacks the warmness, clarity in most part and lesser bass. Probably more towards Re0's balanced signature as well in that sense.

Score:

Bass: 3

Vocals: 3.5

Treble: 3

My Opinion: It provides sufficient details, seperation, and sound quality. The brightness is probably something not to my liking in that sense as well. It also gives the feeling that... the potential of a song is limited as well because of the lack of clarity. But, surprisingly, it can play most (if not all) genre of songs pretty well, probably due to its lack of specialty and its balanced sound signature. So, in conclusion, it is a good IEM for starter and for listening various genre given the price range, but.... it lacks specialization.

I might be bias on this case due to the type of rigs and phones I'm currently using, so I apologize first and please do give a feedback as well as this is my first "extensive" review.

Inside, you will find the IEM, a wooden case as big as the packaging itself, 4 set of different sized single flange eartips (L, M, S, XS), and 1 set of bi-flanges. Due to the use of wooden housing, a bit of care is needed as it won't take abuse well. Isolation is better than average. Microphonics is quite good though I do like to see a shirt clip. Comfort is good if you have mid to big size ears. User will small ears might not get a good seal easily due to the large earpieces.

Sound Quality:
┣ Treble: ★★★
┣ Mid: ★★★★
┣ Bass: ★★★☆
┣ Soundstage: ▆ ▄ ▂ ▂ ▂ ▄ ▆ - Good / Average
┣ ABF: [Low]
┣ Overall SQ: [ 3.7 / 5]
┗ Quick Sum: The overall sound signatures is very warm with big deep bass, full, upfront mid and a smooth upper end. Bass is big, deep, and slightly wet with a moderate attacking speed. Not really very refined but does retain enough control to not sound too boomy or muddy. Mid is full and upfront which tend to sound best with male vocal but not as well on female vocal. Upper mid and especially the treble sound pretty smooth without a lot of upper end sparkle and detail. No sibilance to speak of. Soundstage is slightly better than average and not as good as Woody Two.
Overall Value: [ 3.8 / 5] - US$95 (estimation)
Final Remark: See Woody Two's. (In-depth review can be found here)
SQ: 3.7 | Value: 3.8 ($95)

CrossRoads' Woody Two

Variation: Black / White (color)
Transducer: Single 10mm Dynamic
Spec: 32Ω (@1kHz) | 18Hz~ 22kHz | 105+4dB SPL
Cord Style: Y-cord, 1.30m.
Mini Jack Style: {┏━} style, light build.
Eartips Used: Bi-flanges

Physical Properties:
┣ Packaging: ★★★
┣ Accessories: ★★★★
┣ Build Quality: ★★★☆
┣ Isolation: ★★★☆
┣ Microphonics: ★★★★
┣ Comfort: ★★★★★
┗ Quick Sum: See Woody One's.

Sound Quality:
┣ Treble: ★★★☆
┣ Mid: ★★★☆
┣ Bass: ★★★☆
┣ Soundstage: ▆ ▄ ▂ ▂ ▂ ▄ ▆ - Good / Average
┣ ABF: [Low]
┣ Overall SQ: [ 3.7 / 5]
┗ Quick Sum: The overall sound signatures is on the warm side yet still well balanced without any obvious flaw. Bass goes pretty deep but not as much as Woody One nor has its pronounced rumbling quantity. However, It does has a better sense of control in speed and attack. Mid is well balanced with a more upfront upper vocal (which is what makes female vocal sweet to listen). Treble is well extended with good highlight and sparkle which give great detail close to the point of being analytical. Soundstage is quite good and have a sense of airiness. Sibilance is minimum at worst and only very brief during the brightest passage.
Overall Value: [ 3.8 / 5] - US$95 (estimation)

Final Remark: Both Woodies seem to be more for in house rather than outdoor use and probably not be as versatile as their little brother, the Quattro, but they do offer more in what they have. If SQ is the only concern, I certainly prefer both over Quattro. I am not sure whether it is because of the use of wooden/metal housing or any other reason, but both woodies seem to have a distinct lushness in their sound that set them apart from other IEM even though one might consider the sound to be colored. Those who like big bass and smooth top will love Woody One and those who like well balanced sound will love Woody Two. Between the two, I think most people will be well covered.
SQ: 3.7 | Value: 3.8 ($95)

List of Owners:

WoodyOne
1.
