rand() function in C

Hello Lowyat's Codemasters

I am reading on the book [C Programming for the Absolute Beginner]. I am using Code::Block IDE, my compiler setting is set to GNU GCC Compiler.

I am doing quite well until I stumble upon the Random Number topic.
Below is the example code from the book

I was abit dumbfound that for some reason it worked on codepad, and not my IDE

[WTA]Choosing Game Development as Career

Dear Lowyat forumers.

Today, I finally muster the courage to post here in Lowyat's prestige Education forum. I'm not the best writer in the world, so I'll just say whatever comes to mind. It'll be a very long post.

I am 21 years old this year, and I only have SPM. I'm quite the instant gratification type of person, if I learn something I want to apply it, and if I've applied it, learned it, I want to do more. I don't want to slowdown, I don't want to wait for other people. I am very interested in game development. I did try to self study, do things my way, beat the system, afterall, plus, you can learn anything from the Internet. Oh, and some of the most successful game developers didn't even finish school. However the comfort of home distracted me, and I failed my own experiment. Also, I do not have anything solid, no study plan, or anything at all.

Due to my failures, I temporarily put the idea of game development on hold. I went to work. I am lucky to have friendly and helpful colleagues, team leaders, supervisor and manager, because so far I have very pleasant working experience with the current team. Despite finding happines at work, I'm always drifting towards the idea of making my own game. When I have the free time, I browse Kotaku for game news, read up on Gamasutra on developments, and just read things that are sometimes far too ahead of my understanding.

And it just so happen that I came across Eskil Steenberg, who created his own online game by himself. One man made a game, suddenly, my dream of making a game, alone, is no longer just a dream. Someone has done it. Here's the link to Eskil Steenberg's game, LOVE

Not much of his history is explained, and he didn't reveal much of his past in interviews, but I do get one thing by reading his development blogs, if he needs something, he will create it. He will not resort to anything less than the grand vision he has. I've always dream of that, making my own tools, that enables me to make my own game. That means I'll have to learn programming, and 3D, animation, the lots.

I am at the crossroad of my life. I have entertained the idea of self study before, I failed, due to my own shortcoming, I'm not blaming it on anyone. After joining the workforce, I emerge as a slightly more matured person. And so, I'm reluctant to leave my job for studies. I love my colleagues, I love my workplace. The customers can be rowdy, but I love helping them whenever I can.

So the question: Is it better to go to a Game College(Gamfe Astral)<the website is Chinese> to learn specialize programming in Java, C++, DirectX, or shall I self study? OR should I enroll in a college that teach Computer Science to learn how to program?

Options:

1)I've visited the Gamfe Astral game college in PJ numerous time. What they offer is a certificate in game programming. Their class hour is either 9am-1pm or 2pm-6pm, Monday to Friday. My work will take 12 hours, If my class day clash with my work day, that means I work 12 hours, 1 hour to travel to school, study for 4 hours, going home and lunch might take 1-2hour, and sleep for 3-4 hours, before going to work again. I can request for permanent night shift, but somehow I feel that I am taxing myself heavily, both mentally and physically. If it become unbearable, I will have to leave my job to focus on studies.

2)If I'm going to do self study in order to achieve my dream of creating a game, I'm going to be fully prepared this time. I'll set study plans, and weekly goals, monthly goals. I will read, plan in the free time I can scrape from my working time, and for the 3 offdays, I'll go all out, 12-16 hours of coding, testing, learning.

But will this work?

3)I quit my job, and enroll into a college that teach Computer Science, first go through the Foundation program, then onto the degree program. However, I heard from a friend who is studying IT diploma, the programming you learn is too basic, you cannot even be a programmer with it. And my manager who major in software engineering agrees, he learn all the basics in college years. When I consult my manager, he suggested that instead of spending 3-4 years on Computer Science, why not spend it to master Java, because games or software development can use Java, and that would be better for my future careers. If I can't do games, at least I can fall back onto software development.

Oh, and I'm living with my family at the moment, therefore I manage to save some money from my work. In fact I'm very "kiamsiap" with my money, I even skip out on movies because I think it waste my time on thinking more important things, which I myself realize that after working, I'm a less fun person.

I do not want to burden my parents with my education, yet, my relatives are shouting:"Let your parents worry about money, you just worry about your study" in to my head.

Should I work while study? Or should I quit and study? Do I setup the self-study plan and pursue my dream? Or should I just give up, and follow the system, get a degree, and look for a job?

For those that have read until this paragraph, I humbly thank you for your kind attention. And if you have any constructive comments, or prior experience, please feel free to advice me. In fact if you think I'm too childish, just say it. I welcome all contructive comments. I'm at the crossroad of my life, and I can use all the help I can get.

If you feel there is anything I left out, I'l try to add it into the main post(but of course that depends on the privacy level of the info you need)

[WTA]Vista won't play sound from mic

Hello Lowyat forumers.

I am using Windows Vista Business.

My problem is that the mic I use can only be used for the Sound Recording, but I cannot hear it normally, like lets say I tap on it, I cannot hear it being played directly through my headset, unless I use an audio recording program to record it, then it will have no problem.

So:
1)Mic works
2)But only sound recording program can record/capture the sound from mic, and the recording can be played later. Mic works
3)Any normal "Testing, testing 123" will not be heard directly through the speaker/headset.

I've been pulling my hair with the settings, and Google cannot help me.

So I humbly seek your guidance and help on this issue.

1080p Playback choppy

Hi, my video playback for 1080p is stuttering, or choppy.

The interesting thing is, I have 2 version of the same video. One is 5GB Matroska version, another is 8GB H264 MPEG4. The Matroska version play smooth as silk. But the 8GB version is always choppy. same goes to al the movie / game trailer I download. They're around 300-400MB and 2-3 minute in duration.

My system spec:
Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 - 2.5Ghz
ATi HD4670 512MB
2GB RAM
ASUS P5QL-Pro
No overclocing

Its quite weird that ATi says their GPU support video acceleration, but when I play those videos, my CPU usage is 100% and my GPU usage is 0%.

Anyone have any idea? Suggestion to help me out?

14/5: I waited for whole day, and no POSLAJU parcel, so sms him again.
I get another comfirmation that the parcel has ben sent

19/5: Bizzarely, I get this reply:"Hey sry man I was buzy this few day plz send me ur address again
30 minutes later:"I go ask again don worry I not scammer

23/5: After 1 week 5 days of waiting, I request that he resolve this issue imediately: get me my item or refund me

24/5: Opened a dispute thread

25/5: He asure me that I wil recieve it before this Sunday(31st MAY) and promise if I didn't recieve it after that, he wil fully refund me. And yet again, he remain silent when I ask him for the tracking code

31/5: No W3 BattleChest for me, so I'm expecting a full refund of RM60 latest by Tuesday.
