Nintendo DS Lite Custom

I recently bought a small carton load of broken NDSL thru ebay. It contains 10units of beat up and broken NDSL.
Thinking of repairing, customizing and selling it to those who are interested.

Here's my first mods, replaced all the parts that are broken and it looks 100% brand new,
with a brand new paint job and custom game controller face plate.

Comes in matte and clear gloss finish.

Update: I've decided to replaced the front plate to white.

Marvel's The Juggernaut

Here's my latest project. On going WIP's.
I've started the sculpt from the bottom up, lower body is already casted, while the rest of the body is still in monster clay.
Dynamic pose is loosely based on the artwork below, but I made some modification. Trying to have a punching pose while in mid air.

This is quite huge, I'm guessing more than 12inch. As you can see from the proportion of my hand to the figure.

I'm planning of offering this as a kit on a limited run until the mold deteriorates but still depends on how much interest I get. If you're interested to have one, drop me a pm.

Update # 12: Finally Done

Finally finish casting and painted this piece.
Here's my version of Angrir Breaker of Soul. Casted, assembled and painted. Stand 12inches tall and weights around 2kg. This is a full resin cast.
The hammer and parasites are removable. The hammer head can be screwed back on, the handle and the parasites are hold in by magnets.

as always crits are welcome.

Mold making and casting Tutorials

I made some tuts for those who wants to learn how to make a mold and cast sculpture, parts or anything you want to make a copy of your original mold.
This is a two part mold making with a hard shell mold to hold the silicon together. For me this is the most economical way of making mold since it doesn't require that much silicon compared to silicon block molding. Silicon cost a bomb, so the lesser you used the better.

Material needed:
1. original part/mold to be molded and casted.
2. Silicon. I'm using moldstar 30 from smooth on. Very good product, doesn't require a degassing chamber to use.
3. Resin. Used the cheapest resin for the hard shell. I'm using smooth cast 300 also from smooth on. For this tuts I've used it for both, for hard shell and casting the parts. This resin is kinda expensive since it's a high quality resin so used the cheap one for hard shell and the high quality one when casting your parts.

4. plaster of paris. If you don't want to used resin for the hard shell, you can substitute using this one.

5. Petroleum jelly. Very important. This is a mold release for silicon and resin.
6. Silicon mold release spray, optional
7. Glue gun, paint brush and card board, clay.
8. Silicon thickener ( I'm using Thivex)
9. bandages

Steps:
Prepare your original part. Before molding wash it with detergent soap and water. make sure its clean.
1. Draw a parting line on where the two mold will be separated.
2. Get your cardboard and draw the outline of the part.
3. Cut the outline
4. Fit the part, make sure the it fits and goes in well.

5. Make a clay bed where your original mold will sit.
6. Put back the cut card board in and make sure it's level.
7. Start filling the holes with clay. Very important, make sure the clay is sulfur free. Silicon wont cure if it touches the clay that is not sulfur free.
8. Start cleaning and blending the clay to the original sculpt. Remove all the excess.

9. Cut a strip of 0.5cm clay and start building it around the mold. This serves as two purpose: one, its a resin wall to catch all the excess resin so you wont have any drippings. Two, its a silicon key to align the two mold together.
10. Now, assemble you silicon wall, around 1cm strip
11. Mix 50-50 parts of silicon. Scrape all the side of the container make sure you have a good mix.
12. Start brushing a thin layer of silicon on mold. Make sure all the nooks and cranny are all covered up. This is the best way to make your mold bubble free.

13. This is optional, but I like to spray air on the silicon to move it around to make sure I cover up all the deep areas of the mold
14. Let it sit and cure.
15. Mix another batch of silicon. Apply a second layer. You can add when the first layer is still tacky or completely cures. Let the second layer cures.
16. Now for the third layer, Add a thickening agent on the silicon mix. This will increase the viscosity of the silicon until it's on a peanut butter state

17. Apply the thickened silicon. You can use a brush or a posicle stick. Make sure sure all the undercuts are all covered up. You'll end up with a big lump of silicon.
18. Add some keys by cutting small blocks of silicon.
19. Optional, you can skip this part. add a fourth layer of silicon w/o the thickener
20. Once the silicon is cured, cut the excess.

21. Cut keys on the silicon. This will make the silicon and the hard shell resin fits. Keep cutting till you end with #22
23. Now, get some screws, apply some clay at the bottom. Poke a hole on all four corners of the card board and insert the screws. Make sure it's water tight and the clay is sealing the holes to prevent the resin from sipping in.
This will serve as the hard shell resin keys. You'll end with #24

25. Assemble the resin wall. Hot glue gun the card board make sure it's water tight.
26. Apply some petroleum jelly on the cheapo brush. This make the brush reusable for 2 to 3 times once it came contact with resin. After that it goes to the trash can.
27. Mix the first layer of resin, 50-50 by volume.
28. Pour it in the mold. Using the brush, move the resin around

29. Cut the bandages, apply it in layers on the silicon
30. Mix the second batch of resin, pour it in the mold. Make sure the bandages are all covered up with resin. Move the resin around using the brush
31. Let it cured and remove the card board wall and the bottom card board. Clean the flashing.
32. Once the bottom card board is remove, remove the resin wall clay.

33. Clean the first half of the mold. Remove all the excess clay present.
Repeat the process, assemble the silicon wall for the 2nd half of the mold.
34. Glued pour holes and vent hole for the mold. I used glue stick for the pour hole and satay stick for the vent hole.
35. Apply petroleum jelly all over the first mold. Very important.
36. Mix the first layer of silicon. Apply on the second half of the mold

DIY Air Tank for mini hobby air compressor.

I've bought an air compressor a year ago but without an air tank. It's a max ~50psi mini compressor with auto shut off when it's reaches the max pressure limit. It's kinda ok when use in short duration but if I used it for a long time, condensation starts building and water starts to spew on my airbrush ruining my paint job. I tried adding additional water filter connected directly on my airbrush excluding the one on my air compressor but still doesn't solve my problem. So I decided to DIY this tank. Now my problem seems to be a thing of the past.

Here's my DIY air tank. Constructed out of PVC tubing. Holds around 5.5 liters of compress air.

DIY DS3/Sixaxis Battery Replacement

My 3yr old Sixaxis and Dualshock 3( 3.7V version) cannot hold a charge for not more than 2hrs anymore. I know that the battery is dying so I decided it's time to change the internal battery. The problem is the replacement battery pack cost RM60 here at a local game store in Penang and the one they selling are for the 5V version. I have no choice but to DIY using Nokia BL-4B battery (AA) since the original battery are the same sizes, dimension and thickness wise. It cost me RM30 for both.

Update: played for 2.5hr straight, my DS3 still at full bar. I guess it's working.
Update #2: Friday,Played Ninja Gaiden 3 (Rumble heavy game) for 4hrs + NBA2k12 (Rumble not so heavy) for 2hrs, charge level @ 2bars.
Sat, watch series + movies for 7hrs while controller is on, charge level @1bar
Sun, watch series + movies for 3hrs, still charge level @ 1bar
Mon, watch series for 2hrs, finally run out of charge.

Results: I say it's pretty good, battery mod is working great.

I made some tuts just in case you have the same problem as mine.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
