Members of the Congress have grilled Google's top executive Sundar Pithcai before the House Judiciary Committee, where he was asked, among others, on the reason US President Donald Trump's image appears when a search for the word 'idiot' is carried out.

Republicans on the committee, according to news reports, claimed that the search giant's results are biased.

They accused Democrats who work at the search giant of choosing liberal websites over conservative views for prime placement with regard to the search function.

"Manipulation of search results – I think it's important to talk about how search works," said representative Zoe Lofgren, who allowed Sundar to explain.

"Right now, if you Google the word 'idiot,' under images, a picture of Donald Trump comes up. I just did that.

"How would that happen? How does search work so that that would occur?" she asked.

Sundar then explained how it works.

"We provide search today for – anytime you type in a keyword, we as Google, we have gone out and crawled and stored copies of billions of webpages in our index.

“We take the keyword and match it against webpages and rank them based on over 200 signals, things like relevance, freshness, popularity, how other people are using it. And based on that, at any given time, we try to rank and find the best results for that query.

“Then we evaluate them with external raters to make sure, and they evaluate it to objective guidelines, and that's how we make sure the process is working," he added.
"So it's not some little man sitting behind the curtain figuring out what we're going to show the user. It's basically a compilation of what users are generating, and trying to sort through that information," Lofren said.

Sundar said Google served over three trillion searches last year.

“Just as a fact, every single day, 15 percent of the searches Google sees, we have never seen them before. So this is working at scale. We don't manually intervene on any particular search result," he added.

The Google chief executive officer was also quizzed on competitive dominance, Chinese censorship, and privacy issues.

Xiaomi partners with IKEA, reports its achievements at AIOT Developer Conference

Xiaomi is finding doors to new markets, they are investing heavily in the AI(Artifical Intelligence) and IoT (Internet of Things). They have built dedicated teams for the development of these new technologies. Recently, we have got news that they are building up new headquarters in Wuhan to do development and research on AI. Today speaking at AIOT Developer Conference, Lei Jun has emphasized on the new technologies.

Speaking to folks over at the Conference, Lei Jun explained the importance of AI and IoT along with their impact on the future. Further, he explained the strategic layout of the two core business of Xiaomi AI and IoT at the conference.

As leaked, Xiaomi has partnered with IKEA, a furniture giant in the US. IKEA has partnered with Xiaomi to make smart homes, furniture, etc. Right Now, IKEA intelligent home lightning products are getting Xiaomi IoT platform in December. Currently, the details regarding the new cooperation have not yet surfaced, but we expect some details to surface before the day ends. Xiaomi has already invested in 220 companies via different crowdfunding platform out of them 100 are purely smart hardware-centric companies. Undoubtedly, this proves that Xiaomi is eager to invest in the AI and IoT technologies via different means.

Xiaomi also ushered some showers on its own achievements like reaching 34 million Xiaomi AI active users mark. The Chinese smartphone company has also sold more than 132 million devices incorporated with IoT technology in the third quarter, 2018. Due to the positive environment regarding new technologies and a good number of sales, many corporate houses have partnered with Xiaomi in the past. In the last qquarter, Xiaomi raked 10.805 trillion yuans which is 89% percent increased compared to the previous year. It has led the company to gain 29 billion Yuan in the whole year until now.

Well, it seems Xiaomi is on right track, they are investing rightly in the new technologies which are leading them to new partnerships with other business giants.

Research highlights class divide between ‘poor’ Apple iPhone and ‘rich’ Huawei users in China

Apple users are seen as the ‘invisible poor’ - those who do not look as poor as their financial circumstances

Apple iPhone users in China are generally less educated, hard-up and with few valuable assets, compared to users of other mobile phone brands such as Huawei or Xiaomi, according to a report by research agency MobData.

The Shanghai-based firm also found that most iPhone users are unmarried females aged between 18 and 34, who graduated with just a high-school certificate and earn a monthly income of below 3,000 yuan (HK$3,800). They are perceived to be part of a group known as the “invisible poor” – those who do not look as poor as their financial circumstances.

On the contrary, Huawei phone users are generally married males aged between 25 and 34, hold a diploma or bachelor’s degree and whose monthly incomes register between 5,000 yuan and 20,000 yuan. The research also found that a large proportion of Huawei users own flats and cars while Apple users do not. Mobdata did not disclose the number of respondents who participated in the research.

College graduates and those who earn more than 20,000 yuan a month prefer Huawei and Xiaomi phones and more than half of Oppo and Vivo phone users earn between 3,000 and 10,000 yuan per month. iPhone users earned the least monthly – about 3,000 yuan and below.

Apple, the third-largest smartphone vendor after Samsung Electronics and Huawei Technologies, typically raises the price of its signature iPhones with each yearly launch. The expensive handsets have pushed many consumers, particularly those in emerging markets such as India, to cheaper alternatives, such as China’s OnePlus or Huawei’s Honor series.

Apple has also reduced orders from two component suppliers in China after its latest, slightly lower-priced iPhone XR model, failed to achieve expected sales, as reported in the Post earlier this week.

Still, the older versions of iPhone and second-hand iPhones remain popular in China.

The iPhone 6 launched by Apple in 2014 remains a favourite among Chinese users while later versions such as the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus, both released a year later, come in second and third place.

Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi – the four largest smartphone vendors in China, own a combined market share of nearly 80 per cent, while Apple holds 9 per cent, according to a Counterpoint research note released late October.

Farmer Finds Rat With Plant Growing Out Of Its Back

A farmer found something he most likely wasn’t expecting when he inspected his soya crops recently – a live rat with a plant growing out of its back.

Datar Singh planted his soya bean crop in the Ratlam district of Madhya Pradesh, India, earlier this year.

It was there that he came across the poor rat which, somehow, had ended up with a soya bean sapling growing right out of its body.

Datar’s neighbours filmed the rodent, which was said to be in ‘immense pain’. The creature seemed to struggle to move with the growth, and it appeared to not even try to escape when the people on the scene inspected it.

Those in the video can be heard talking, probably expressing their shock and confusion at what they were seeing.

The people tried to turn the rat over by its tail to get a good look, but there was no obvious explanation for the plant which had taken hold.

Datar considered that the rodent might somehow be a prank. I have to admit, it did look a little like something that might come out of the polluted lake in The Simpsons.

However, the farmer ruled out the possibility of practical jokes, and it has been suggested that a soya bean seed must have fallen into an open wound on the rat’s back.

Presumably, the plant must then have germinated and begun to grow.

Professor A Siddiqui, head of the department of biology at a college in nearby Barnagar, spoke about the disturbing incident, revealing that the plant could have caused the little rat to suffer much worse consequences.

It’s a miracle.

Though the plant had grown in the region near the neck, there was no brain damage.

After the video was taken, the farmer took the rat to his home and managed to remove the plant from its back. Hopefully the poor creature will heal soon, and I’m sure it will be keeping far away from any seeds in the future.
