However the following year if your employment spills over into exceeding 183 days you can request IRAS to re-assess you as a tax resident and refund you the difference in tax paid.
- Visit IRAS website for more information on taxes.
- CPF (equivalent of our EPF) is only mandatory for PR's and SC's (Singapore Citizens) at 16% Employee, 20% Employer, capped at first $5k per month.
- Some companies will encash the employer portion for foreigners.
- Visit CPF Website for more information on CPF.

Permanent Residence

- ICA does not have any official guidelines for PR approval (or any points system like Australia/NZ).
- Previously most agencies recommend applying for PR after 1 year if you are on P1 EP, 2 years or more if you are on P2/Q1 EP.
- Visit ICA website for more information on applying for PR.

Accomodation in Singapore

- Accomodation $600-$100 (room) $2000-$3000 (entire flat)
- Typical costs are 1st month rental + 1 month deposit (for each year of the lease) + 1/2 month agent fee (for each year of the lease).
- Foreigners can only own Private Condominiums and are subject to ~18% stamp duty. PR's can own Private Condominiums and Resale HDB's are and subject to ~8% stamp duty.
- Popular room/house search websites: PropertyGuru, FlatsDB, RoomsDB, EasyRoomMate.

Accomodation in Johor

- Foreigners on Work Pass living in Malaysia and commuting to SG can drive MY-registered cars and bikes. Cars incur $35 and bikes incur $4 VEP/daily.
- PR's and SC's living in Malaysia and commuting to SG can only drive SG-registered cars and bikes into the island.
- Visit LTA website for more information on operating a car in SG as a foreigner.

Driving in Singapore

- Foreigners on Work Pass are allowed to drive in Singapore for the first year only using Malaysian Drivers License. For second year onwards you are expected to convert to Singapore license.
- Visit eCitizen site for more information on converting your license.
- Note that foreigners on work pass are only allowed to drive Malaysia-registered cars if you stay outside Singapore.
Westports Holdings Berhad v2

New thread!

Westports Holdings Bhd is eyeing a suitable merger and acquisition (M&A) target particularly in the Asean region that would be able to chart good growth to the benefit of terminal operators. CEO Ruben Emir Gnanalingam told that he was keen on pursuing a deal but had yet to find a terminal in the region that could join the group. Clearing the air on market rumour that the company is already in talks with external parties, Ruben said that so far nothing suitable was on the plate yet. "I can tell you that we are keen, but we want to pursue the right deal where pricing, valuation and prospects of the terminal are within our expectations. Southeast Asia is the strongest market for us, as the countries here are still bullish on the economic outlook. Asean potential is amazing in the next 20 to 30 years. This is where the growth will be," he said.
USA Stock Discussion v6

Time for a new thread for the bullish Nov

News To Look Out For For The Weeks Ahead
"The U.S. midterm elections will be the key focus of next week, while Friday’s U.S. jobs report and Tuesday’s earnings report from Alibaba will be watched closely by investors. And next weekend, all eyes will be on a couple of big events in Europe.

Midterm Elections
Control of Congress hangs in the balance as U.S. voters head to the polls on Tuesday. While many signs indicate the GOP may gain control of the Senate, races are too close to call in at least eight states that could determine the outcome of the election. The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows Republicans are clinging to a narrow lead on the question of which party likely voters want to see in control of Congress.

U.S. Jobs Report
We’ll learn on Friday whether the U.S. continued its steady employment gains in October, when the Labor Department releases its monthly jobs report. Job growth in the past 12 months has hit its healthiest pace in more than eight years, with employers adding an average of 227,000 jobs a months since the beginning of the year. The unemployment rate fell to 5.9% in September, its lowest level since 2008. Here are 5 things to watch next week on the economic calendar.

Alibaba Earnings
Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba reports its first quarterly earnings on Tuesday since its record $25 billion initial public offering in September. The company’s shares have been marching higher after bottoming at $82.81 on Oct. 15, and the numbers could well determine where they go from here. Other big earnings next week include Sprint and AIG on Monday; 21st Century Fox, CVS and Priceline on Tuesday; Time Warner, News Corp and Qualcomm on Wednesday; and Disney on Thursday.

Catalan Vote
The wealthy Spanish region of Catalonia is planning a symbolic vote on independence on Nov. 9. The voting process is informal, but that hasn’t stopped Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy from preparing a possible legal challenge to block it. While many Catalan independence supporters initially criticized the balloting format as lacking credibility, more Catalans have come around to embracing it as a show of resolve.

Berlin Wall Anniversary
Germans will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which led to the country’s reunification, on Nov. 9. Locals will be reminded of the scale of this historic event by a light installation that will run along the former course of the wall, dividing the capital city temporarily. Chancellor Angela Merkel will also open a new exhibition at the Berlin Wall memorial and witnesses will tell their stories of how the event unfolded." - WSJ

http://blogs.wsj.com/briefly/2014/10/31/we...eport/?mod=e2tw
