The other family types in the study are those with both parents born here, those with both parents born overseas, and those with a foreign-born dad and a Singapore-born mum.

Following the overwhelming demand and sell-out of their first show on 1 April 2017, Coldplay is thrilled to announce a second show for COLDPLAY - A HEAD FULL OF DREAMS TOUR in Singapore, on 31 March 2017 (Fri), 7.30pm at the National Stadium.

Tickets across all price categories, including limited VIP $298 tickets, will go on public sale via all Sports Hub Tix channels on 25 November 2016 (Fri) at 10am. There will be no presales.

Workers' Party expels Yaw Shin Leong

SINGAPORE : The Workers' Party has expelled its Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang, Yaw Shin Leong, with immediate effect.

Party Chairman Sylvia Lim said at a media conference on Wednesday that the party believes strongly in transparency and accountability, and expects no less from party members, especially an MP.

She said transparency and accountability are key but these have not been met.

She said Mr Yaw has been accused of several indiscretions in his private life.

She said by continuing not to account to the party and the people, especially the residents of Hougang, he has broken the faith, trust and expectations of the party and the people.

The shocking announcement came after weeks of speculation and rumours that Mr Yaw has had an alleged extra-marital affair with a fellow opposition member.

Other WP MPs will cover his duties in Hougang.

Ms Lim said the decision was difficult and painful for the party.

She said Mr Yaw has been a core member of the party leadership for more than 10 years and has made significant and unique contributions to the party's growth.

She said he has also served residents of Hougang diligently.

However, the council has decided that it is in the public interest to take this step.

In David Mitchell's 2004 novel Cloud Atlas, there is a futuristic segment set in Korea where a corpocracy rules the land. Advances in bioengineering have allowed human creatures called fabricants to be bred as workers. Physically, they are perfect specimens - with identical, beautiful faces but without any higher consciousness. When they run out the course of their productive lives, they are destroyed.

I found this section of the book particularly disturbing. It is a chilling study of how a capitalist totalitarian society exploits the weak and turns humans into robots for money. Everything looks happy on the surface but beneath, it's maggots and rotten meat.

Recently, I got a taste of Mitchell's dystopian view - at a K-pop fan meet of superband TVXQ. What's a fan meet? It is a shrunken version of a concert, with only a handful of live performances. Interspersed with the song-and-dance numbers are screenings of music videos and sanitised Q&A sessions.

To any disinterested observer, it was a blatant rip-off. To the fans, it was like communing with the gods. It was a uniquely depressing experience but during the show, I could not put my finger on the reason.

Motor Racing: Wheldon killed in massive IndyCar crash

LAS VEGAS, Nevada: English racing driver Dan Wheldon was killed in a massive crash at the Las Vegas 300 IndyCar series finale on Sunday.

Wheldon, 33, winner of the famed Indianapolis 500 in May, died from injuries he received after his car was sent airborne over another car and clipped the catch fencing during the 15-car wreck.

Several cars were sent flying while others careered down the track in flames.

"IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar chief executive Randy Bernard said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today."

Wheldon's fellow drivers had been informed of his death shortly before Bernard made his public announcement.

There were 34 cars entered in the season finale - one more entry than at the Indianapolis 500 at the bigger Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Drivers had voiced concern about the high speeds being reached at Las Vegas, where they were close to 225 miles per hour in practice this week.

"I'll tell you, I've never seen anything like it," Ryan Briscoe said of the sight of burning cars spinning on the track and sailing through the air.

"The debris we all had to drive through the lap later, it looked like a war scene from Terminator or something. I mean, there were just pieces of metal and car on fire in the middle of the track with no car attached to it and just debris everywhere."
