Account Security - HIBP Compromised Password Check

In view of a number of incidents involving members accounts being taken over due to weak/compromised passwords, we have brought forward the implementation of a password check against Have I Been Pwned's list of 613 million known compromised passwords.

If you're already logged in, you will not be asked to change your password even if your password has appeared on any leaks. However, you will be required to change your password at your next login (or if someone tries to access your account based on a leaked password ).

If you do not receive a password change prompt, it means your password is unique and secure, and you will not need to do anything further.

We are also currently working on 2 factor authentication, and email logins to further strengthen account security.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to open a thread at the Helpdesk. If you run into any issues with your password change (old expired emails etc), please drop an email to helpdesk@lowyat.net.

Account Security - Use of compromised passwords

Dear All,

The following is in relation to a security incident yesterday (1st August 2021) that involved unauthorized access to at least 4 members accounts by a malicious 3rd party. The accounts had their passwords changed, and were then used to post unsavory content before it was locked down.

After an internal security audit, we have ascertained that the accounts were compromised as they used similar credentials (username:password combination) at Reddit.com, which suffered a breach 8 months ago.

We have also traced around 20 other accounts (which also appear on Reddit with a similar username) which were attacked in a similar way - but did not result in a breach, possibly due to different passwords/credentials being used.

Feature Upgrade

As compromised passwords and data breaches are quite rampant, over the next few days, we will be upgrading our system to include a compromised password notification powered by Have I Been Pawned (https://haveibeenpwned.com/Passwords). Should your current password exist in the breach database (there are now over 600 million compromised passwords on HIBP), you will receive an email informing you about this and recommending you to change your password. As your passwords are stored in a one way hash in our database, this check will only be done at your next login once this feature is implemented.

DuitNow Enabled in Garage Sales

We have added on a field in the control panel to include your Duitnow details to ease the convenience of buying and selling in the Garage sales subforums.

You can now enable DUITNOW acceptance on your account by editing your profile info and entering your DuitNow ID (e.g. your mobile number).

The DUITNOW button will appear at the bottom left of your Garage Sales sales threads.

The Malaysian Democratic process is still stuck in the 1950's. Constituents voting for MP's and 222 MP's deciding who is Prime Minister is a concept that worked back in the 1950's when it was a mammoth task to tally 30 million votes.

Instead of leaving it to elected politicians from multiple fractions to decide and play with the fate of the Rakyat, it will be much easier to just let the Rakyat vote.

Get 2 or 3 candidates for the Prime Minister post, let them campaign and share their visions for the country to the Rakyat, and let the Rakyat decide who they want to helm the country. That way nobody will have any complaints as it is truly the choice of the majority.

This is not a call for a change of constitution. Its merely a one-off solution to the current political impasse which no matter which way it pans out currently - is going to send the country two steps back.

Ok, gonna stray away from what is already been mentioned, and talk about the implications.

If they were going to remove the items from zero rated, they should have done it from the start, not after two years. The implication of this - based on my limited understanding of GST is that there is going to be double taxation all the way around, esp with two weeks lead time before it kicks in.

Your mamak and basically every other eatery is already charging a 6% flat gst on your entire bill. Even without this current removal, you have to pay 6%, but the majority of the raw materials they purchase are purchased without GST.

With the new 6%, they will have to fork out more for the materials, and this will be reflected in the bill. And this new value will again be hit with another 6%.

While the outlets themselves will be able to offset this later in their input/output tax calculation, not many outlets will be able to absorb this cost for the short term.

This example direct from the customs site for example

The cost of purchasing the coffee for the outlet will now also incur a 6% GST charge, which will evidently be reflected in a new base price for the coffee. Add another 6% to the bill and you will essentially be looking at a 12% effective GST on the end bill.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

[SOLVED] Issues with yahoo email (@yahoo.com)

We (and many other sites) are having issues delivering emails to the yahoo domain (@yahoo.com) over the past couple of weeks, due to some anti-spam changes implemented at yahoo recently.

The majority of emails (subscription, password recovery etc) are all bouncing back with the following error.

554 5.7.9 Message not accepted for policy reasons. See https://help.yahoo.com/kb/postmaster/SLN7253.html

We are trying to get in touch with Yahoo to solve this issue. Meanwhile if possible try to change your email address, or send a request to helpdesk for manual password recovery if you are not able to receive emails from us at your yahoo.com email account.

p/s yahoo.com.my accounts don't seem to be affected at this point in time.
