SINGAPORE (BLOOMBERG) - At first glance, the implosion of vaunted fashion start-up Zilingo looked jarringly sudden.

When the Singapore tech darling suspended its 30-year-old chief executive officer Ankiti Bose over complaints about alleged financial irregularities, it was March. Within weeks, creditors were recalling loans, more than 100 employees had left, and Ms Bose found herself fired, though she denies any wrongdoing. The company's survival is now in question.

The Zilingo meltdown has rattled the tech industry in South-east Asia and beyond. The start-up had raised more than US$300 million (S$414 million) from some of the region's most prominent investors, including Singapore investment company Temasek and Sequoia Capital India, the regional arm of the Silicon Valley firm that backed Apple and Google. Ms Bose was a celebrity who criss-crossed the globe to speak at tech gatherings from Hong Kong to California.

Interviews with more than 60 people, including current and former staff, merchants, investors, entrepreneurs and friends of the key players, suggest that Zilingo struggled for years under Ms Bose's leadership. Her management style alienated employees and undermined the business, according to staff who worked under her.

The start-up veered from one strategy to another in pursuit of sales, including a US$1 million promotional trip in Morocco, loans to customers and a short-lived push into the United States. At one point, she became fixated on "crazy growth" to catch the attention of Japanese tech titan Masayoshi Son, according to two former employees with direct knowledge of the matter.

At the heart of the company's breakdown lies the soured relationship between Ms Bose and her long-time supporter, Mr Shailendra Singh, head of Sequoia India. Allies for years, they fell out as financial pressures mounted. Mr Singh lost faith in the management skills of the young founder he had championed, while Ms Bose believed Mr Singh betrayed her by pushing her out of her own company, according to people familiar with their relationship, who requested anonymity as the talks were private.

The clash grew so acrimonious that Sequoia's lawyers demanded in a May legal notice that Ms Bose stop making allegations that could tarnish Sequoia's reputation, the people said.

Zilingo's turmoil highlights an apparent lax internal corporate governance culture that is not uncommon in the start-up industry. For two years, the company failed to file annual financial statements, a basic requirement for all businesses of its size in Singapore. Auditor KPMG has yet to sign off on Zilingo's financial year 2020 results. While it is not unusual for start-ups to miss these deadlines, which can result in a fine of up to $600, it is typically a warning sign that firmer action may be needed by the board.

Yet, investors, including Temasek and the Economic Development Board's investment arm EDBI, put more funds into Zilingo at the end of 2020. Shareholders that together own a majority stake of the company only formally acted against Ms Bose after whistle-blower complaints were filed earlier this year.

Sumber dalaman Persekutuan Hoki Antarabangsa mengesahkan bahawa Illi Najwa melakukan perjalanan dari Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) pada 2 Disember untuk bersama kekasihnya.

"Ketika sekatan perjalanan antara India dan Malaysia kembali reda baru-baru ini, dia berjaya mendapatkan penerbangan ke New Delhi selepas mematuhi syarat ditetapkan oleh kerajaan," menurut sumber itu.

Pasangan itu pada awalnya merancang majlis perkahwinan mereka pada 30 Disember serentak sambutan hari lahir Illi Najwa namun akhirnya memilih 2 Disember atau 02/12/20 apabila dihitung akan berakhir dengan tujuh serta membawa makna nombor jersi yang dipakai Manpreet.

Illi Najwa bekerja di sebuah universiti swasta di Malaysia dengan bertugas mengawal perancangan, pengembangan perniagaan dan aktiviti pengambilan pelajar di pasaran Asia Selatan.

Ibunya, Masita pernah bermain hoki mewakili Angkatan Tentera Malaysia.

Manpreet kali pertama bertemu Illi Najwa yang menyaksikan perlawanan ketika dia mengetuai pasukan remaja India pada saingan Piala Sultan Johor 2012.

Difahamkan mereka kerap berhubung apabila Manpreet kembali mengetuai pasukan kebangsaan India pada Kejohanan Piala Sultan Azlan Shah di Ipoh.

"Manpreet tertarik dengan kecantikan dan tingkah laku sopan Illi Najwa, ketika dia menikmati hidangan capati di rumah keluarga wanita itu pada tarikh kedua mereka bertemu."

Manpreet dilahirkan pada 26 Jun 1992 dilantik sebagai kapten India sejak Mei 2017.

Pemain yang beraksi di barisan pertahanan itu melakukan penampilan pertama untuk pasukan India pada 2011 ketika berusia 19 tahun dan dinamakan Pemain Remaja Terbaik Asia pada 2014.

Olivia Munn is opening up to Ellen DeGeneres about the controversy surrounding her new movie, The Predator.

Earlier this month, the actress shared in an interview with The Los Angeles Times that she had advocated for a scene in The Predator featuring actor Steven Wilder Striegel to be cut from the movie after learning he's a registered sex offender. Striegel, a longtime friend of the film's director, Shane Black, was cast in the film as a "a jogger who repeatedly hits on Munn's character." After Munn went to 20th Century Fox with the information in August, the scene was cut from the movie.

"Our studio was not aware of Mr. Striegel's background when he was hired," a Fox rep said in a statement in early September. "Several weeks ago, when the studio learned the details, his one scene in the film was removed within 24 hours. We were not aware of his background during the casting process due to legal limitations that impede studios from running background checks on actors."

In an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Tuesday, Munn talks about how people involved in the movie reacted after she spoke out about the controversial casting.

"The public, social media, fans, strangers on the street, all of the news outlets have been extremely supportive, and that's such a gift, because it's not an easy situation to be in," Munn tells DeGeneres. "I did find out, and he was a 38-year-old man at the time, it happened about 10 years ago, he was 38 years old and went after a 14-year-old female relative. And when I found that out I did call Fox and I said, 'We have to delete the scene.' And they did thankfully."

"I did reach out to my co-stars, individually, and said, 'Hey, I want you guys to know, I found this out,'" Munn says, explaining that she found out through an acquaintance and didn't want her co-stars to be "blindsided" by the information like she was.

Munn goes on to share, "First of all, when I did call my co-stars, I got chastised the next day by people at the studio for telling them, and why am I not just keeping it quiet? It's all gonna be OK, it's got deleted, what's the big deal? And I said, ‘Well, I mean, it happened.'"

"The reality is that, the people who collude to keep people like this in positions of power, that's the real problem, and people who keep turning blind eyes," Munn continues. "The next thing that's been hard that you brought up is the support, that's become this other story because, my cast members, nobody said anything to me about it, nobody talked to me, nobody reached out that whole day. At first I thought maybe it's because they just don't know what to say, they want to stay out of the way, but privately I did feel iced out. I think that's what's really important for people to understand is, when you see something, you have to say something, however it's not going to be easy. And there will be people that just get mad at you for not playing the game."

Munn later mentions that her co-star Sterling K. Brown did "tweet out support" and was "very forthcoming about how he felt, so that's important." Actor Boyd Holbrook also took to social media on Monday to apologize for canceling a "small amount of press" amid the movie controversy.

JOHOR BAHRU 3 April - Peguam, Kamal Hisham Ja’afar memberitahu Mahkamah Sesyen di sini hari ini bahawa Sultan Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar berkali-kali melobi dalam tempoh beberapa bulan untuk menyertai syarikat Southern Ads Sdn. Bhd. (Southern Ads) yang ditubuhkan sejak 2003.

Kamal Hisham yang memberi keterangan dari kandang saksi berkata, dia sudah beberapa kali menyatakan rasa berat hatinya untuk membenarkan baginda menyertai syarikat tersebut kerana tidak mahu ada campur tangan baginda selain tidak memberi faedah buatnya.

Katanya, perniagaan yang dijalankan Southern Ads berkembang dengan cepat dalam tempoh dua tahun sehingga menarik minat Sultan Johor untuk menyertai syarikat berkenaan.

“Sultan tertarik dengan apa yang kita ada (kontrak dan pendapatan) dan sebab itu tuanku hendak masuk Southern Ads. Baginda sudah beberapa kali melobi saya berkenaan perkara itu setiap kali kami mengadakan perbincangan di Istana Pasir Pelangi.

“Perniagaan yang saya jalankan seakan ‘mengacau’ perniagaan pihak lain. Jadi, tuanku berkata kepada saya untuk memasukkan baginda ke dalam syarikat supaya tidak ada pihak lain yang akan mengacau,” katanya ketika pemeriksaan utama oleh peguam Datuk Shaharudin Ali yang mewakilinya.

Kamal Hisham, 47, berkata, keterangan saksi pendakwaan yang mendakwa Southern Ads adalah syarikat milik Sultan Ibrahim adalah bohong kerana dia menubuhkan syarikat itu pada 2003, dua tahun sebelum baginda dilantik menjadi pengarah syarikat.

Katanya, disebabkan Southern Ads tidak mempunyai kakitangan pada awal penubuhan, segala kerja yang perlu dibuat oleh syarikat itu dilakukan oleh kakitangan firma guamannya, Kamal Hisham & Associates.

“Tentang keberatan untuk membenarkan tuanku menjadi pengarah Southern Ads adalah kesukaran untuk mengadakan mesyuarat dan baginda sendiri tidak mahu keluarkan duit. Saya tahu perangai baginda dan sebab itu saya tidak mahu Sultan Johor masuk ke dalam syarikat,” katanya.

Kamal Hisham didakwa atas 17 pertuduhan melibatkan empat pertuduhan pecah amanah, sembilan pertuduhan menerima wang hasil daripada aktiviti haram dan empat pertuduhan di bawah Akta Syarikat 1965.

Pendakwaan dikendalikan Timbalan-timbalan pendakwa raya, Zhafran Rahim Hamzah, Ku Hayati Ku Harun dan Shukor Abu Bakar manakala Kamal Hakim turut diwakili peguam Mohd. Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz.

SHAH ALAM: The Shah Alam High Court today postponed the seizure of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) property for four days after the higher learning institution settled a sum of RM8,000 this morning to the plaintiff.

Nur Aliah Selamat, the lawyer for the plaintiff, Mutiara Gemilang Engineering Sdn Bhd, said the RM8,000 was the sum of judgments dated August 2 and November 20 last year, which UiTM had to pay to the company.

“We had asked UiTM’s legal representatives to settle the RM8,000 to us as early as November 2017 but the payment wasn’t made.

“As such, we filed for seizure of property to reclaim the RM8,000, which was scheduled to take place today. However, at 9.10am today, our office received a settlement cheque from the defendant for the RM8,000.

“The court has extended the date of seizure by another four days. The court will fix a new date, and seeing that the defendant has settled the amount via cheque, we will have to wait for the cheque to clear,” the lawyer told reporters today.

On April 20 last year, the engineering firm had sued UiTM for RM40.8 million for breaching the payment terms over a contract involving the supply, delivery, installation, testing and certification of machinery and equipment for all new courses at its UiTM Puncak Alam’s campus in Shah Alam.

Based on the December 9, 2010 agreement, Mutiara Gemilang Engineering had been granted a RM134.5 contract which needed to be paid in stages upon completion of works.

UiTM, however, was found to have broken the law by depositing one payment, worth RM11 million, into an individual’s private bank account.

Mutiara Gemilang Engineering had pleaded that the payment led to severe financial woes for the plaintiff, who bore huge losses as it had to seek other sources of funding, including making third party loans, which ultimately affected its budget.

Mutiara Gemilang Engineering, in a statement, said the seizure action against UiTM was made after the university failed to pay RM8,000 in costs.

The payment order was made following UiTM’s failure to cancel a summons application by the company and suspend court proceedings.

Mutiara Gemilang Engineering then filed a seal and seizure proceeding to settle the outstanding costs.

Asked if the payment meant that the RM8,000 has finalised the outstanding claims between the two parties, Nur Aliah replied in the negative.

The RM8,000, she explained, only amounted to the legal fees for the two applications made earlier, which amounted to a claim of more than RM40 million.
