I used to be the president of the hiking club

With the current commotion of the missing hiker,
I just wanna look back at what we did back in the days

So, I was elected as the 3rd president of Kelab Kembara Uniten,
with around 1000 registered members

Around 3 years, I did 10 mountains
and numerous other trips like waterfalls and kayaking.
some of them are repeats like Ledang and Nuang
but I'm one of those guys who tried to finish the G7 of Malaysia

If you dunno what is G7, well
it is 7 tallest mountains in Semenanjung Malaysia
Tahan, Korbu, Gayong, Yong Yap, Yong Belar, Chamah and Ulu Sepat .
I did only 5 and not the last 2 mentioned.

The hardest was Yong Yap, it is straight up all the way
It took me 3 days to complete the climb.
I got 7 days of diarrhea due to contaminated river water.
Gunung Tahan was the longest, 5 days from Merapoh to Kuala Tahan.

After Uni, I didn't climb as much, no geng.
last one I did was ~~Mount Cook~~ Roy's Peak in New Zealand.

My role during hiking is usually the Backmarker
where I will always be the last person in group NO MATTER WHAT.
being said, I always carry the first aid and load of maggi mee.
So I'll always be the one who pushes the fat, slowest girl up the hill.
Sometimes I get fed up, I just set the stove and cook maggi while them hike
I'll catch up with them eventually. Sometimes alone.

There's a few instances I have to "carry" those fat girls down during thunderstorm
at night with twisted ankle. Sabar je lah.

Here, I don't have ilmu hutan or other ilmu.
Just basic common sense.
I never claimed to be an expert.
I'm not even the fittest, just mentally capable to not give up
and knows when to give up.
I only gave up twice - once Santubong and once ~~Mount Cook~~ Roy's Peak.

I was 16 in 1994, went to Singapore from JB with a couple of friends using the RM1 bus
I stayed with a school friend in JB and we went to Singapore at Xmas eve.
So, I feel like JAKUN - literally.
Coming from Kuching to West Malaysia just a 8 months before.

Ride the MRT - first time on a train
Passing immigration - scary as hell because you hear stories about random drug test
Massive shopping street like Taksahimaya Orchard- KL only got Sg Wang and BB Plaza
Seeing so many white folks - this is rare back in the 90s
One of them skated barefoot out from MRT - well, that's a first
The shoulder to shoulder crowd - never experienced that before
Everything is 1.8 times more expensive - didn't eat at all, maybe, don't remember me eating.
Went back to JB walking from Woodlands because of Xmas eve jam.
Scared as hell while went trough Malaysian Custom.

It feels like I'm out of place - but I know where I wanna go
went to Peninsular Plaza to pick up some bootleg CD and band shirts
I was into music and underground gigs that time
Even bought a Doc Marten for $100 - best purchase ever, it lasted me more than a decade
This is the only time I feel Singapore was the best.

Now, I can fly direct to SG via Kuching Airport.
Only for concerts, never for shopping.
Singapore still sucks. Food sucks
People sucks. The only place I faced direct racism.
At least in Australia, it is passive racism

People who converts currency during vacation

Yeap, you heard me right.

You're on a fucking vacation, you are suppose to spend.
If you wanna save money, don't go on a vacation.
Fucking idiots every time wanna buy a drink or eat dinner
always do converting in their head before ordering.

I don't live in Klang Valley, so every time I go there
I'll pay whatever I wanna eat or buy
I'm not gonna care how much
because I'm a fucking tourist, a local tourist

If I'm going into a 7 Eleven,
I know how much I'm gonna pay for a can of coke.
If I'm gonna eat at some restaurant in Pavilion,
I know how much I'm gonna spend for the whole family

Same goes oversea, spending RM60 on a bowl of pasta is normal.
I'm not gonna do mental math on what's the limit on how much I'm gonna eat.
Same goes to buying that I LOVE <insert city> shirt.
You're gonna spend at least RM60-100 no matter what.

Here are my 2 cents on how to REDUCE congestion

SOURCE OF PROBLEM - You can NEVER stop people buying cars but you can stop people from coming into KV to work or study.
People lived from one end of Klang Valley will commute to another end to work or study.

HARD TRUTH - If you "ban" cars, people would simply buy motor instead of using PT.
High humidity is the main problem why people don't wanna walk, not the heat.
People have been looking at the wrong country (Singapore) and should be looking at our neighbors instead

Here are my 2 cents on how to REDUCE congestion significantly in KV.

- introduce third tier public transport to bridge the last mile gap. Ditch the on demand van, introduce bike for hire for single person like Gojek or Tuktuk.
- let riders like Food Panda, Grab do multitasking with e-hailing passengers (to be discussed in detail, why not?)
- make side parking bay, a dual use parking for both bikes and cars. One bay can fit 3 motorbikes.
- introduce senior non uniform traffic police and make sure they have body/dashboard cam. They earn 20-50% of the saman as allowance. Only cases caught on cam.
- move every new business out from KV except for commerce and finance. I mean like industries, education, government and such.
- make it mandatory for developers to connect it's residential with proper connection to public transport. Within 1km range or more?
- invest on more elevated walkways downtown like the existing Chowkit/Sultan Ismail and Pavi-KLCC.
- DBKL and other municipal enforces mandatory towing only in downtown area. RM300 for cars, RM100 for motor. Mandatory 2 weeks lockup in impound before release.
EDIT (15 May)
- Subsidized and privatized school busses or put in under RAPIDKL or something like that. Majority of the congestion is because of parents sending/picking their kids to school.
- Improve KTM Komuter to be faster, more frequency and better in service. This will let people from outskirts to commute faster to work.

Above are the measure to:
- stop illegal parking especially on sidewalks (which deters pedestrian from using it)
- fear is the best deterrence. people will behave on road because they know they'll being recorded by the police
- giving commission to cops will not only reduce rasuah but also giving motivation for cops to actually do their job
- ample space for motor parking
- impounded vehicle will force them to learn to use alternative transportation
- e-hailing bikes will not causes traffic congestion downtown since downtown is already walkable (less demand).

You can argue with me the numbers but I don't consider area under Padawan Municipal Council as Petra Jaya.
For start, we are a residential district that hosts Sarawak's main administration hub and also the state's sports hub.

Roughly 150k resident.

Our MPs are in the top level cabinet minister post and most of the statesmen lives here.
Meaning, they fucking care for their neighborhood. It is a family oriented living area.

So how does it differ from other districts in Sarawak?

There's no shopping mall, not the one with car park, cinema, food court or anchor stores.
None. Only hypermarts.

There's not a single parking spot that needs payment. The City Hall does not impose coupon parking at all.
Not a single building here need to pay for parking.

There's almost no high density housing, the only one in existence are Kesuma Resort and Metrocity.
There 1-2 flats i Matang but they are closer to the Kota Padawan district.
Almost 85% owns their homes and 95% are landed housing.

There's not a single neighborhood that have dogs barking when you walk pass their homes.

I can drive less than 5km from home to swim on a beach, to picnic near the river,
bring my kids to play in the water park, hike a mountain, or evening stroll at the waterfront.

I can play volleyball/pickle ball/badminton/skate/tennis/mountain bike/carrom/dart/futsal/raga/fishing all within 5 minutes drive.

There's the largest night market in Kuching. Metro City also arguably the best hub for Malay/Melanau food in the city.

No or little presence of illegal immigrant. The only time I see someone from Bangladesh are during Raya prayers.
There's Sambas Indon but then they look and speak exactly like us.

I can say, no rempit since COVID. They kinda gone extinct with all the young kids glued to their phones now.

What's bad?

Online gambling shops. You know who brings them here.

Meth addicts. Well, they don't cause ruckus on other people except people who are close with them.
Most of the violent crime like murders are because of meth and often killed was their family members.

Slow drivers. No one drives above 100km/h. For me it is a good thing.
No one rushes to their destination or hustling in life.
People actually let you pass to turn into a corner by flashing their headlight to give way.
Another thing, no traffic jam except during rush hour near the bulatan.
But then the City Hall have their own traffic team to mitigate the traffic

Well. that's it so far. It is a healthy living suitable for families.

I'm pro foreign labor but anti-immigration.
Hear me out.

European countries (and Malaysia) needs low cost labor in order to strive in this economy.
So bringing in foreign labor to do the dirty work is cost effective.
Since most local don't wanna do this shit.

They can live off in cramped rooms and eat at communal kitchen
to save money for remittance.
Locals cannot do that since they want to have a normal life and better pay.

I'm dumbfounded that Europe allows immigrant to bring in families in to cope with this labor issue.
Why not just allow only able working body into the country, not their grandma and cousins in?

Another thing, some refugee seeking asylum usually are running away from something.
In most cases, debt and the law.
So you're letting in crooks into your country and
now you're blaming their ethnicity and what not for that?
Why can't you just vet them in the process?
I'm not gonna start on why bomb/colonize their country in the first place

Now Europe is surprise pikachu that the immigrants are making troubles and
