Can't detect my Portable HDD

Hi All, need an urgent help...i have 1 Old portable HDD, 40GB...today i connect it to the computer, but i dun see any pop up USB connect in my computer. but I can see the hard disk green light is on. However i can't see the drive in MY COMPUTER. I have try few computers oledi, same things happen. ANY IDEAs WHat the problem there?... there are some important file... pls help!!thanks
