Alor Setar: Wanita yang menerima suntikan vaksin Covid-19 berbeza akibat kesilapan jururawat di Pusat Pemberian Vaksin (PPV) Dewan Al-Hana di Sik pada Ogos lalu, dilaporkan sihat.

Anak wanita terbabit, Nur Jannah Ramli, 30, berkata, ibunya yang berusia 58 tahun dan menetap di Kampung Selamat B, tidak mengalami sebarang kesan sampingan lain selepas disuntik vaksin Pfizer-BioNTech dan Sinovac.

"Alhamdulillah tak ada apa-apa, emak sihat dan tak alami kesan sampingan selepas kesilapan pemberian vaksin.

"Pihak PPV Sik pun ada hubungi emak bertanya mengenai keadaan kesihatannya, emak beritahu semuanya sihat sahaja," katanya ketika dihubungi di sini, hari ini.

Dalam kejadian pada 8.25 pagi 5 Ogos lalu, jururawat bertugas di Bilik Suntikan 1 PPV Dewan Al Hana, Sik, melakukan kesilapan dalam pemberian vaksin ke atas wanita itu.

Wanita terbabit sepatutnya menerima suntikan dos kedua vaksin Pfizer-BioNTech, namun tersilap diberi suntikan vaksin Sinovac.

Berikutan itu, pada 10 Ogos lalu, media melaporkan Pengarah Jabatan Kesihatan (JKN) Negeri, Dr Othman Warijo memaklumkan, jururawat berkenaan sudah memohon maaf secara peribadi kepada penerima terbabit.

Katanya, jururawat itu mengakui kesilapan dilakukannya, sekali gus diberi teguran, kaunseling dan direhatkan daripada tugasan pada hari berkenaan.

Hasil siasatan JKN Kedah mendapati kesilapan itu berlaku disebabkan jururawat terbabit tidak memeriksa kad suntikan vaksin wanita berkenaan sebelum memberikan dos kedua.

BANGKOK, Oct 12 (AFP): Thailand plans to fully re-open to vaccinated tourists from countries deemed low risk from November 1, the country's leader said Monday, citing the urgent need to save the kingdom's ailing economy.

Before the pandemic, Thailand attracted nearly 40 million visitors a year drawn to its picturesque beaches and robust nightlife, with tourism making up almost 20 percent of its national income.

But Covid-related travel restrictions have left the economy battered, contributing to its worst performance in more than 20 years.

Premier Prayut Chan-O-Cha announced on Monday night (Oct 12) the country will be reopening its borders to vaccinated tourists travelling by air from "low risk countries".

The 10 nations considered low risk include Britain, the United States, China, Germany and Singapore.

"When they arrive, they should present a (negative) Covid test... and test once again upon arrival," the prime minister said in a televised address.

After getting a negative test, "they can travel freely like Thais," he said.

His announcement significantly loosens up current restrictions in place for vaccinated tourists, who must undergo at least seven days hotel quarantine.

Thailand's so-called "sandbox" scheme in Phuket -- which allows vaccinated tourists to move freely around the popular beach island -- currently requires them to remain there for a week.

Visitors outside of Thailand's designated 10 low-risk countries are welcome, "but they have to be in quarantine," said Prayut, adding that more nations would be added to the greenlit list in December.

- 'Live with it' -

Earlier this year Prayut had vowed the country would reopen in October, stating its vaccination campaign would be sped up to reach 70 percent of the population.

To date, 48 percent of Thais nationwide have received at least a single vaccine dose, while more than 30 percent have double-jabbed, health officials said Monday.

The capital Bangkok -- once famed for its nightlife -- is still currently under a nighttime curfew, as well as a booze ban in bars and restaurants.

Prayut said Monday authorities will "consider allowing alcoholic drinks in restaurants and reopening entertainment venues under strict health measures" during the New Year's Eve period -- previously a money-maker for the kingdom's tourism sector.

He acknowledged his decision to reopen in less than a month came with the risk of more coronavirus cases.

"But I think the people will not be able to stand it if they have to lose a second chance at this business opportunity," the premier said, pointing to countries like Britain and Australia loosening their travel restrictions.

"The time has come for us to ready ourselves to face the coronavirus and live with it... much as we have learnt to live with other diseases with treatments and vaccinations," he said.

Last year, Thailand lost about $50 billion in tourism revenue as foreign arrivals plunged 83 percent to 6.7 million, from a record 39.9 million two years ago.

The kingdom is still registering about 10,000 new cases a day -- largely fuelled by the highly contagious Delta variant. It has more than 1.7 million cases to date and has recorded 17,751 dead. - AFP

Kuala Lumpur: Seorang pemandu kereta mewah jenis Lamborghini Gallardo yang videonya tular merempuh enam kenderaan di Jalan Tun Razak di sini awal bulan lalu, dijatuhi hukuman penjara dua minggu dan denda RM9,000 oleh Mahkamah Majistret hari ini atas pertuduhan memandu secara melulu dan berbahaya.

Majistret Amanina Mohamad Anuar menjatuhkan hukuman itu ke atas Abdul Rahman Abdullah, 28, selepas lelaki itu mengaku bersalah atas pertuduhan tersebut.

Mahkamah memerintahkan Abdul Rahman menjalani hukuman penjara itu bermula dari tarikh tangkap pada 6 Okt selain tidak dibenarkan mengambil lesen memandu selama lima tahun dan jika gagal membayar denda, tertuduh boleh dipenjara lima bulan.

Abdul Rahman yang tidak mempunyai lesen memandu didakwa memandu kereta Lamborghini Gallardo berwarna ungu dengan melulu dan berbahaya kepada orang awam sehingga menyebabkan kemalangan serta kerosakan teruk kepada enam kenderaan lain di Jalan Tun Razak, pada 8 pagi, 8 Sept lalu.

Dia didakwa mengikut Seksyen 42 (1) Akta Pengangkutan Jalan 1987 yang memperuntukkan hukuman penjara tidak lebih lima tahun dan denda tidak lebih RM15,000 serta hilang kelayakan memegang atau mendapatkan lesen tidak kurang lima tahun dan lesen percubaan dibatalkan serta kesalahan akan diendors pada lesen memandu.

Terdahulu, Timbalan Pendakwa Raya Siti Nursyuhada Abd Rauf memohon hukuman setimpal bagi memberi pengajaran kepada tertuduh.

Abdul Rahman yang tidak diwakili peguam merayu hukuman rendah diberikan dengan alasan dia tidak bekerja dan perlu menanggung keluarga termasuk dua anak.

Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) sedang menjalankan kaji selidik mengenai tahap kesediaan orang ramai untuk memasuki fasa endemik Covid-19.

Hal itu dinyatakan Ketua Pengarah KKM Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah dalam satu hantaran di media sosial pagi ini.

"Adakah anda bersedia hidup bersama-sama Covid-19?" katanya.

Menyertai hantaran berkenaan ialah borang kaji selidik dalam talian untuk diisi orang ramai.

Penjelasan pada borang itu menyatakan ia dibuat bagi mengenal pasti tahap kesediaan orang ramai untuk hidup bersama-sama Covid-19.

"Tiada jawapan (yang dianggap) betul atau salah.

"Dapatan tinjauan ini akan digunakan untuk menambah baik strategi promosi dan pendidikan kesihatan dalam mendidik dan memperkasa Keluarga Malaysia untuk hidup bersama-sama Covid-19," katanya.

Antara soalan yang ditanya ialah apa yang difahami seseorang mengenai situasi "hidup bersama-sama Covid-19" dan tahap kesediaan masing-masing, sama ada sangat tidak bersedia sehingga sangat bersedia.

Turut ditanya ialah tindakan yang diambil responden jika berada dalam situasi tertentu di majlis sosial atau tempat awam semasa fasa endemik Covid-19.

Ada kira-kira 20 soalan diberi secara keseluruhan, membabitkan langkah-langkah pencegahan yang akan diambil secara umum.

Responden boleh menjawab dengan memilih cadangan yang diberikan dari skala 1 hingga 5 atau pilihan "ya" atau "tidak" pada bahagian tertentu.

Tidak ada maklumat sensitif yang dikongsi semasa tinjauan, termasuk alamat e-mel peserta.

NSC ex-chief Zolkples Embong found dead at home

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 — Former National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong was found dead at his home this morning, according to the police.

The police confirmed his death following reports by NSC staff that they had been unable to contact Zolkples since Friday, when he missed the Muslim Friday prayers at Vista MSN, Bukit Jalil.

This prompted police and fire and rescue department officers to visit Zolkples’ home this morning, where they found him on his kitchen floor after they secured entry.

The exact cause of death is still under investigation, according to initial reports released by the police.

However, national news agency Bernama quoted an unnamed police official as saying that a heart attack was suspected.

In response to the news, Malaysian athletes' official Twitter page also confirmed his death earlier this morning.

Oct 1 (Reuters) - An experimental antiviral pill developed by Merck & Co (MRK.N) could halve the chances of dying or being hospitalized for those most at risk of contracting severe COVID-19, according to data that experts hailed as a potential breakthrough in how the virus is treated.

If it gets authorization, molnupiravir, which is designed to introduce errors into the genetic code of the virus, would be the first oral antiviral medication for COVID-19.

Merck and partner Ridgeback Biotherapeutics said they plan to seek U.S. emergency use authorization for the pill as soon as possible and to make regulatory applications worldwide.

"An oral antiviral that can impact hospitalization risk to such a degree would be game-changing," said Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

Current treatment options include Gilead Sciences Inc's (GILD.O) infused antiviral remdesivir and generic steroid dexamethasone, both of which are generally only given once a patient has already been hospitalized.

"This is going to change the dialogue around how to manage COVID-19," Merck Chief Executive Robert Davis told Reuters.

Existing treatments are "cumbersome and logistically challenging to administer. A simple oral pill would be the opposite of that," Adalja added.

The results from the Phase III trial, which sent Merck shares up more than 9%, were so strong that the study is being stopped early at the recommendation of outside monitors.

Shares of Atea Pharmaceuticals Inc (AVIR.O), which is developing a similar COVID-19 treatment, were up more than 21% on the news.

Shares of COVID-19 vaccine makers Moderna Inc (MRNA.O) were off more than 10%, while Pfizer (PFE.N) was down less than 1%.

Jefferies analyst Michael Yee said investors believe "people will be less afraid of COVID and less inclined to get vaccines if there is a simple pill that can treat COVID."

Ahli Parlimen Batu Gajah V Sivakumar mengecam pembebasan Setiausaha Agung Umno Ahmad Maslan yang dilepas dan dibebaskan daripada dua pertuduhan selepas bersetuju membayar kompaun berjumlah RM1.1 juta.

"Kes ini membuktikan wujudnya amalan ‘dua darjat’ dalam sistem keadilan di negara kita.

"Saya pasti perkara ini tidak mungkin berlaku jika tertuduh itu bukanlah seorang ahli parlimen yang berpengaruh," dakwanya pada satu kenyataan media hari ini.

"Adakah ini bermakna kerajaan hari ini akan mencari jalan untuk membebaskan semua kluster mahkamah dengan ‘beat the system’ yang sedia ada," soalnya.

Dia berkata demikian susulan keputusan Mahkamah Tinggi Kuala Lumpur semalam membebaskan Ahmad Maslan atas dua pertuduhan tidak mengisytiharkan RM2 juta yang diterima daripada Najib Razak kepada Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN) dan memberi pernyataan palsu kepada Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM).

Hakim Ahmad Shahrir Mohd Salleh memutuskan demikian selepas Timbalan Pendakwa Raya (TPR) Mohd Mukhzany Fariz Mohd Mokhtar memaklumkan mahkamah bahawa pihak pendakwaan menarik balik kedua-dua pertuduhan terhadap Ahmad Maslan.

Ini selepas ahli parlimen Pontian bersetuju membayar kompaun berjumlah RM1.1 juta.

Sivakumar juga mendakwa integriti dan kredibiliti institusi Peguam Negara telah terhakis sepenuhnya apabila sistem perundangan negara "dipermainkan semata-mata untuk berpihak kepada kuasa kerajaan yang memerintah."

"Rakyat melihat tindakan ini sebagai satu kompromi yang amat menjejaskan imej institusi kehakiman dan Peguam Negara. Penarikan semula pendakwaan terhadap Ahmad Maslan adalah tidak wajar

"Apakah ini sengaja dilakukan untuk memberi peluang dan membuka jalan kepada beliau untuk dipilih sebagai Timbalan Yang Dipertua Dewan Rakyat,"soalnya lagi.

Pemimpin Umno sanggup dilabel kluster mahkamah

Presiden Umno, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi menyifatkan pemimpin Umno yang berani dan setia saja sanggup dilabelkan sebagai "kluster mahkamah".

Katanya, istilah kluster mahkamah direka oleh pasukan propaganda sebagai usaha berterusan memburuk-burukkan sebilangan pimpinan Umno selepas Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-14 (PRU-14).

"Ia 'character assassination' (pembunuhan karakter) yang seterusnya selepas menyaksikan sebilangan besar rakyat mula hilang keyakinan terhadap parti politik yang mereka dukung dan kembali menaruh harapan kepada Umno.

"Namun mereka buat-buat lupa bagaimana sebahagian daripada pemimpin parti politik mereka menyelamatkan diri daripada momokan 'kluster mahkamah'.

"Hanya pimpinan Umno yang berani dan setia kepada perjuangan parti sanggup bertahan dan menentang walaupun dilabel sebagai 'kluster mahkamah'," katanya dalam satu hantaran di Facebooknya, hari ini.

Ahmad Zahid berdepan 47 pertuduhan iaitu 12 bagi jenayah pecah amanah, lapan bagi tuduhan rasuah dan 27 bagi tuduhan pengubahan wang haram membabitkan puluhan juta ringgit wang milik Yayasan Akalbudi.

Bekas timbalan perdana menteri itu menyifatkan pertuduhan terhadapnya adalah bermotifkan politik.

Selain Ahmad Zahid, bekas perdana menteri, Najib Razak turut berdepan bertuduhan penyelewengan dana membabitkan SRC International Sdn Bhd dan juga 1MDB.

Turut terkait dengan pertuduhan di mahkamah ialah Setiausaha Agung Umno, Ahmad Maslan berhubung dana 1MDB.

Dalam pada itu, Ahmad Zahid berkata ada pemimpin parti tertentu terlepas daripada gelaran "kluster mahkamah" selepas melompat parti.

"Justeru mereka yang lompat parti sebenarnya tiada "moral standing" untuk memberi pandangan terhadap individu yang konon mereka gelar sebagai kluster mahkamah.

"Dengan itu adalah wajar mereka menginsafi tingkah laku kerana rakyat zaman ini hidup di zaman bermaklumat yang mengerti apa yang berlaku," katanya lagi.

Dear Dr. G,

My wife and I have been married for eight years and she became pregnant within a year of the wedding.

We are obviously very blessed with our daughter; However, ever since the first pregnancy, we have been trying in the last six years with no success.

We reluctantly accept defeat and went to see the fertility specialist.

I was shocked to learn that my sperms were somewhat deficient and apparently my lifestyle is to be blamed.

I was told by the doctors that cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking are the main culprits.

My wife also reckons hot showers and steam baths are destroying spermatogenesis.

I personally worry about the radiation emitted by the handphones and laptops are slowly killing my sperms.

Besides, I also hear that tight jeans are also responsible for the poor performances in the ejaculations.

Of course, I will change my lifestyle to enhance the gametes, but I am keen to put Dr. G on the spot to debunk the facts and fiction that are killing my balls softly.

Infertility in men is primarily determined by the number of sperms ejaculated less than 15 million per ml, the viable sperms having less than 4% normal morphology and less than 40% of the gametes being motile.

The most obvious cause of sperm deterioration is age, even for men. The average time to pregnancy is four and a half months for a 25-year-old man, while men aged 40 will achieve pregnancy only after two years. The other culprits that destroy spermatogenesis are smoking and alcohol consumption. Cigarettes are well recognized to affect lower sperm counts and motility. On the other hand, a male partner who consumes more than 20 units of alcohol per week is likely to take longer for his partner to conceive.

Another well-known factor that impairs sperm production is the exposure of the scrotum to higher temperatures. Hot tubs and saunas are documented to increase testicular temperature resulting in reciprocal impairment of sperm quality. The same principles apply to men wearing tight jeans and undergarments, squeezing genitals closer to core body temperature causing poorer spermatogenesis.

Another lifestyle that has been implicated to cause male fertility is cycling. In fact, there is no real strong data to support cycling is impairing spermatogenesis. One study conducted with extreme variables like cycling for more than two hours on rocky terrain with narrow bike seats were said to impair male fertility. However, normal cyclists with regular seats are generally not associated with poor sperm quality.

Amongst these myths and facts, modern-day gadgets and devices are also thought to have implications on spermatogenesis. Heat and radiofrequency from laptops and cellphones have been shown to damage sperm counts. According to Fertility and Sterility Journal, the wireless connection on the laptops may is linked to DNA damage in sperms. A group of researchers from Exeter, United Kingdom, had recently gathered ten past studies (meta-analysis) that demonstrated a small, but consistently declined in sperm quality when they have been exposed to mobile phone radiation in their pocket. Matthews analyzed 1,492 samples in both experimental lab and observational human studies. The conclusion revealed the exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation from mobile phones was associated with an average of 8.1% decrease in sperm motility and 9.1% deformity of the ejaculates. The declines in the concentrations were less conclusive, as some researchers did not identify a decline in the number of sperms.

Although the study did highlight an association between the emission of radiofrequency and changes in sperm quality, in reality, such fluctuation is quite common even without exposure to electronic devices. Besides, the link is purely an association and the analysis did not necessarily show any cause or effect. The more important studies of the long-term impact of mobile phones over many years should really be observed.

Many men may have suboptimal levels of sperm quality to begin with, however at a younger age, the less optimal quality sperms make little impact on the overall fertility. Altering the placement of the mobile device is a simple manoeuvre that perhaps can protect his crown jewels from the “slow radiation frying” of mobile phones. The reality is the obesity, smoking, alcohol, and stress have more impact in killing the sperms fast than modern gadgets. Kuala Lumpur: Kegiatan penuntut universiti warga asing menjual cecair ganja untuk digunakan dalam katrij rokok elektronik (vape) di laman sosial berakhir apabila ditahan polis, kelmarin

Ketua Jabatan Siasatan Jenayah Narkotik Kuala Lumpur, Asisten Komisioner Sahar Abd Latif berkata, bertindak atas maklumat, suspek berusia 29 tahun ditahan di tepi jalan Presint 1, Putrajaya pada 6.35 petang.

Menurutnya, suspek secara tiba-tiba cuba melarikan diri sebaik mahu diperiksa tetapi tindakannya gagal.

"Hasil pemeriksaan terhadap suspek berjaya menjumpai dadah disyaki cecair ganja seberat 0.20 kilogram (kg) bernilai RM501.

"Saringan ujian air kencing ke atas suspek didapati positif dadah jenis THC dan lelaki itu tidak mempunyai rekod jenayah," katanya dalam kenyataan, hari ini.

Sahar berkata, siasatan awal mendapati cecair itu digunakan dengan cara mengisinya di dalam katrij vape dan ia mendapat permintaan tinggi dalam kalangan rakan rapat suspek.

Menurutnya, urusan jual beli dijalankan melalui media sosial di mana cecair itu dipercayai mampu memberi kesan khayal seperti penggunaan ganja.

"Dengan tangkapan ini, polis berjaya menumpaskan kegiatan pengedaran dadah didalangi warganegara asing yang dikesan aktif selama dua bulan di sekitar Lembah Klang.

"Suspek direman selama 14 hari untuk membantu siasatan mengikut Seksyen 39B Akta Dadah Berbahaya 1952 yang membawa hukuman gantung sampai mati jika sabit kesalahan," katanya.

KEHIDUPAN rakyat menjadi semakin tidak terurus sesudah virus pandemik Covid-19 mula menyerang negara pada Mac 2020.

Demi menyelamatkan nyawa rakyat, kerajaan terpaksa bertindak cepat, antaranya mengurung rakyat daripada keluar rumah.

Akibatnya, ramai hilang mata pencarian sehingga tiada duit untuk makan dan minum.

Rutin hidup bagi ramai daripada kita berubah seratus peratus. Bila semua aktiviti disekat, semua terkurung dan termenung di rumah.

Lalu, datanglah pula masalah lain. Bila hilang pendapatan, emosi semakin tertekan.

Bagi suami isteri yang ada anak-anak yang masih kecil dan bersekolah, lagilah stress tidak terkira.

Soal untuk mengurus makan dan minum untuk sekeluarga makin berat.

Suami isteri makin kerap bergaduh. Lama-kelamaan hubungan menjadi semakin renggang dan akhirnya bercerai.

Itulah punca ramai pasangan suami isteri bercerai sepanjang tempoh pandemik Covid-19 bermula Mac tahun lalu hingga Ogos lalu.

Mengikut perangkaan, sejumlah 66,440 kes cerai membabitkan pasangan beragama Islam dilaporkan di seluruh negara manakala bukan Islam adalah sejumlah 10,346 kes.

Kita harap selepas kerajaan melonggarkan syarat dan membenarkan lebih banyak aktiviti perniagaan dibuka, rakyat dapat kembali menjalani kehidupan dengan ‘norma baharu’.

Kita tidak mahu masalah sosial lain seperti perceraian dan kes bunuh diri menimbulkan suasana yang tidak tenteram dalam masyarakat kita.

Kita selain perlu menjaga kesihatan diri daripada dijangkiti virus Covid-19 ini, perkara yang penting juga ialah bagaimana mengawal emosi dan mengekalkan mental kita daripada terganggu.

Barangkali wang boleh kita cari, tetapi bila sudah bercerai, nilai kekeluargaan dan kasih sayang pasti tidak dapat kembali lagi.

12 dikompaun rentas negeri ke Genting Highlands

BENTONG - Seramai 12 individu dikenakan kompaun sebanyak RM5,000 seorang kerana merentas negeri tanpa surat kebenaran daripada polis dalam operasi pemantauan di Kilometer 17, laluan menghala ke Genting Highlands pada Rabu.

Ketua Polis Daerah Bentong, Superintendan Zaiham Mohd Kahar berkata, kompaun dikeluarkan menerusi pemantauan Ops Covid-19 oleh anggota polis Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) Bentong.

Beliau berkata, mereka yang dikompaun membabitkan 10 lelaki dan dua wanita berusia 20 hingga 58 tahun.

"Kesemua mereka gagal mengemukakan permit kebenaran rentas negeri yang sah daripada polis. Kesemua mereka yang dari arah Kuala Lumpur menghala ke Genting Highlands," katanya dalam satu kenyataan pada Khamis.

Beliau berkata, kompaun dikeluarkan di bawah Peraturan-Peraturan Pencegahan dan Pengawalan Penyakit Berjangkit (PPPDPPB) (NO 2) 2021.

"Tindakan tegas akan diambil ke atas individu yang masih gagal dan mengambil mudah prosedur operasi standard (SOP) ditetapkan Majlis Keselamatan Negara (MKN)," katanya.
