Advice Needed For Customization

Hi there,

My current PC is about 6 years old (I think), and I had a shop customize it for good gaming and occasional web browsing and office work. It used to be able to run games at least on medium to high settings (6 years ago) and I love my PC. However, it cannot play the latest games on high or even medium anymore (of course) and I was thinking up upgrading, but I really don't feel like buying a new PC and leaving this one in storage.

My current specs are:

1. Motherboard: MSI B450M PRO-VDH
2. Graphics: 1060
3. C hip: Ryzen 5 2600
4: RAM: DDR4 16GB
5. PSU: 550W (I think)

I was thinking if I can utilize the same PC and change the below:
1. Chip: Ryzen 7 5800X3D
2. Graphics: Asus RX 7900 XTX TUF OC 24GB GDDR6
3. RAM: Kingston HyperX Fury Beast 32GB 3200
4. Do I need to change the PSU? If yes: Corsair HX850 80 PLUS Platinum
5. Add some casing fans. I didn't notice my PC only has 2 120mm fans (front and rear). Looking at adding Be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 140mm (2 front, 1 back) and moving the existing fans to top?
6. Should I change the chip cooling fan to like a Noctua or Be Quiet? Which one would you recoomend?

FYI, my current casing is Fractal Design Define 7

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

DSLR Camera or Phone Camera?

Hi there,

There was one day when my wife was taking pictures of my kid running around the field with her iPhone 8 and, she'd try to zoom the shots to capture. The picture turned out to be blurry (pixelated).

Therefore, we were thinking if a DSLR will solve that particular issue. Upon looking at the prices of DSLRs, we were also wondering if this justifies the cost or maybe it may be better to get a phone with better camera. By all means, we are not professional photographers, but it'd be nice if we are able to capture pictures which will not blur upon zooming.

The DSLR I am currently looking at is:

Nikon D3500 (warranty 2 years by Nikon - not supplier warranty)
Tamron 18-270mm PZD (so I don't have to keep changing lenses for different shots)
Athabasca 62mm filter
All comes with bag and 16GB memory card

TOTAL: RM3060

Is the above camera better than a phone camera, or there's no difference from a very good camera phone? Is the price mentioned a good deal or should I look elsewhere? Or should I consider a cheaper DSLR alternative since I am in no way a professional? I would pretty much like a auto focus function though.

Thank you.

Asus Zenwifi or Orbi RBK40?

Hi there,

Has anyone used Asus' Zenwifi or Netgear's Orbi RBK40?

I am debating which one to get.

1. Unifi 500
2. Area - 2800 sqft single storey

I'm looking for:

1. Ease of setup
2. Excellent signal reception
3. Of course, allowing me to utilize my 500Mb and not less than 380Mb (for example) wifi even at close range

Do let me know if more details are required from me to ease making recommendations.

Thank you.

How Many Mbps Do I Need

Hi there,

I currently have 500Mbps (turbo-ed) for a while now and my contract has ended.

I would never achieve 500Mbps to begin with even with LAN connection. I am currently using ASUS 1300UHP which I know is supposedly more suited for a 300Mbps connection.

Since I am now out of contract, I would like to downgrade to either a 100Mbps connection or preferably 300Mbps. However, I would rather remain with Unifi since all they need to do is just change the settings to my account and everything is done at the backend without them coming over to the property (I hope). But the 300Mbs package is pricey for Unifi compared to Maxis. Therefore, I was wondering if Unifi's 100Mbps package is sufficient for:

1. Web browsing
2. Watching Netflix at 4K
3. Watching Youtube (kid watches all the time)
4. Torrenting
5. There are about 14 devices connected at once (4 security cameras, 4 tablets, 2 smart TVs and 4 phones).

Based on this, should I go for 100Mbps or switch over to Maxis for 300Mbps?

Thank you.

Questions about aircond

Hi there,

I'm looking to purchase 2 aircond units, a 2.5HP non inverter for living room use and a 1.0HP inverter for room use.

There are so many brands to choose from and out of a few salesmen's recommendation(s), I have narrowed them down to a few models which I am interested in:

2.5HP

1. Hitachi RAS-EH24CKM (RM2388)
- R32 gas
- BTU/h: 22,007
- Watt (min-max): 1,950
- 3 energy stars rating

2. Daikin FTV60P (RM2265)
- R32 gas
- BTU/h: 22,000
- Watt (min-max): 2,060
- 3 energy stars rating

1.0HP

1. Hitachi RAS-XH10CKM (RM1219)
- R32 gas
- BTU/h: 9,210
- Watt (min-max): 800
- 4 energy stars rating

2. Sharp AHXP10WMD (RM1250)
- R32 gas
- BTU/h: 9,000
- Watt (min-max): 710
- 5 energy stars rating

3. Daikin FTKG28Q (RM1289)
- R32 gas
- BTU/h: 9,500
- Watt (min-max): 810
- 3 energy stars rating

There are also Mitsubishi Heavy Duty airconds, but there are so many models that I am unsure which I should consider. Based on my expectations below, can you please assist me as to which aircond I should consider for both 2.5HP and 1.0HP?

1. Lower energy consumption (less electric bills)
2. Maintenance - just in case it breaks down, anyone can fix it and the parts are cheap
3. Able to cool down the area fast
4. The less noise, the better
5. Reliability

By the way, does anyone know how to calculate the electricity usage per month (under the assumption it is 240 hours - 8 hours a day for 30 days)?

Thank you. Your comments are much appreciated.
Recommendation for ASUS Router

Hi team,

I have been using ASUS RT-N18U for a few years now wihout 5Ghz and would like to get a new router to sustain the 5Ghz.

I stay in a condo and therefore would like the new router to cover at least 1300 sqft. I have about 15 wireless devices which will connect to the router.

May I know, it terms of performance and reliability, which will be more recommended between the two.

On average, ASUS RT-AC1300UHP is more expensive than ASUS RT-AC1200G+ by about RM100.

Thank you.

Building Infrastructure

Hi there,

My Unifi 30MB contract has ended and Maxis came out with its RM89 for 30MB.

Now, my current building infrastructure is unable to exceed 50MB since it's using copper wire. However, a Maxis service reseller said that the Maxis technician is able to attempt to get 100MB service by installing cables or something (I'm not too sure myself) and asked me to sign up for 100MB to try.

Now since Unifi started its RM129 for 100MB as well, I'm wondering if Unifi technician can do the same thing?

But seriously, can either technicians can commit that they can provide 100MB broadband by installing cables? DOn't they have to change the entire cabling infrastructure for the entire complex? If they can, do any of you have the contact number of the installer for either Maxis or Unifi for me to check with before I consider for either Maxis or Unifi?

Thank you.

Does car coating help?

Hello,

I am currently paying about RM160 a month for car park at my work. The company has decided to provide me with a car park allocation which is free, but the catch is, it is out in the open. Therefore, the car will be exposed to rain and sun.

I have considered doing coating for my car, but I'm unsure if this will help against rain and shine.

Also, I'm not sure which kind of coating I should go for since there are so many in the market. Around the housing area, there is one detailer who's charging about RM900 for glass coating.

I've also been recommended by my colleagues to give Sierra Glow a try (SG6), which I have just submitted a request for a quotation via their website.

Is it worth the hassle and price to do the coating, or continue to pay for the car park for RM160 a month, which may potentially inflate in a year or 2? Also, if you may, please give me a recommendation for a place to do the coating as well as whether I should do ceramic coating, glass coating etc? My car is a 2015 SUV.

Thank you.

I'm looking to buy either a Ford Kuga or a CX5 this year, but unsure which is the best value for money.

I am interested in:

1. Power
2. Space
3. Fuel consumption
4. Comfort
5. Safety
6. Interior functionality (auto seats, etc)
7. Service costs
8. Longevity of the vehicle (whether it breaks down often or if i need to keep servicing it)

I am not worried about:

1. Resale value
2. Gadgets (GPS, etc)

For the owners of Kuga or CX5, please give your comments on your experience with your SUVs.

I am also wondering when is the best time to buy the vehicle (highest discount value), since I am not worried if it's a year end car or not.

Thank you.

Ipad Mini or Ipad Mini 2?

I'm interested to buy an Ipad Mini, but I am not sure if I should get the first gen or the second gen.

I currently own a Sony Tablet Z which I normally use for movies, gaming, word processing and web browsing.

The reason why I would want to own an Ipad Mini is its portability. I would also like to use applications which is only exclusive to IOS.

Should I buy the first gen or second gen? I will not be using the Ipad for movies. Maybe light browsing, a little bit of gaming (like Samurai Siege or maybe somewhere along the line of Infinity Blade trilogy). Aside from graphics, what can justify the purchase of gen 2 compared to 1?

Thanks.

Unifi Hypptv Decoder

Hi there,

My Unifi Hypptv decoder is not powering up. I am not sure if this is due to the power adapter or the device itself. However, my colleague has been kind enough to let me have his since he has terminated his contract a year ago.

Can I use his decoder and resume all my existing channels or do I have to have it configured? As of now, I am subscribed to most of the channels without the Sports channels.

Thank you.

PC as Media Centre

I'm thinking of building a desktop to serve as a media centre, preferably a small form factor PC. Reason to build this PC is because a stand alone media player is not capable of playing 10-bit file.

Since this PC will not be used for gaming and etc., I was wondering if I could get a recommendation of parts and price?

My initial thoughts were:

1. Small Form Factor PC casing
2. 450W power supply
3. Dual core processor
4. 1GB graphics card (with HDMI)
5. 500 GB/1 TB HDD
6. Motherboard with USB 3.0
7. Is sound card required?

Thank you.

Opinion of buying cars

Hi there,

I'll be looking into getting 2 cars, 1 for me and 1 for my wife. Both of us has the budget of RM180K-ish between the 2 cars. We currently own a Kancil and a 2002 Camry.

Here are our selections so far (we can only choose 2):

1. Honda City E+
2. Toyota Vios G Spec
3. Myvi 1.3
4. Ford Fiesta (preferably the Ecoboost version coming in 2014)
5. Honda Civic 1.8/2.0
6. Peugeot 408/Turbo
7. Honda Jazz CKD
8. Toyota Prius C
9. Toyota Altis (the new version)

Each car has their own merits. Our only concerns are as below:

1. Reliability
2. Performance and handling (speed and power when you require it, especially when going uphill or overtaking)
3. Parts are easy to find and does not cost like a bomb
4. Comfort (A lot of salesman advised that since we're so used to the Camry's comfort, if we choose a smaller car like a Vios or City, we will be very frustrated when driving long distance)
5. Safety features

With so many cars to choose from, it's a headache to choose between the best of the best. I was wondering if anyone can shed some light to this dilemma.

Thanks!

Xperia Tablet Z or Note 8.0

Hi there,

I am about to get a tablet but for the life of me, could not seem to make up my mind whether to get an Xperia Tablet Z or Note 8.0.

Tablet Z triumphs in bigger screen, better graphics and has LTE while Note 8.0 has a "just nice" size screen, able to make calls, has an S-Pen and has multitasking windows.

Since I take the LRT to work, I'll use the tablet to watch videos, browse the net or check emails. Since the train is usually crowded, that's when the Note 8.0's compact size has an advantage over the 10.1 display of Xperia Tablet Z. But then again, if I was to watch a HD video during other times, it wouldn't be as appealing as watching it on Xperia Tablet Z.

To be honest, Note 8.0 has a winning edge, but the picture quality and the size is not there when I want it. I know, I know, I can't win em' all

But maybe for those of you who owns a Note 8 or Xperia Tablet Z can shed some light for me.

Thanks!
