HD650 Cables Measured

http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/headp...part-one-page-2

Results are obvious prior to measurements, but I would argue differently.

Cables do make a measurable difference when you go into very high end instrumentation/measurement industry.

Heck, at my company we use super low cap low loss cables that costs a fcuk ton of money per unit. All these just to get the best measurements from our high band analyzers.

So the argument here should really be that humans have shitty ears and if a low end audio frequency measurement shows no difference, no one should really be convinced that they can hear any difference.

sekian.

Lorry service to move piano + house crap

Hai guys.

I'm about to move back to Penang Island soon. Problem is, I have a huge piano plus some other stuffs I need to carry back to Penang from Dengkil (Selangor).

Where can I get a specific service to do so? Piano's heavy and not easy to handle. Back in PG I have a forklift back home so it's easy for typical lorries to do the job. However, it is not so simple over here. What do?

Thanks in advance.

Fantôme - Desktop Headamp

Quite some time ago I designed an amp for my own use and the design was shared amongst my close friends of the hobby. It was designed with the philosophy of keeping it simple, yet maintaining the quality that rivals many high end headphone amplifiers.

Sometime later, a good friend came over and suggested I release it to the public. So I went into work, tweaked and redesigned some parts while retaining its core values. Here’s what it looks like.

[center][/center]

PCB and Assembly Info:
-Fully Integrated parts, no wires at all to maintain consistency and quality.
-Dual Layer FR4 Laminated PCB.
-Aluminum Knob.
-Etched Panels.
-Full Metal Enclosure.

Amplifier Info:
-Solid state Desktop Amplifier.
-Class A operation. (Push Pull BJT biased to Class A region)
-Triple Channel Technology.
-Fully DC coupled no capacitors in the main signal path.
-Discrete buffer + SOIC OPA Topology.
-Circuit is designed around the chip I meticulously picked, so it is tuned to have the best slew, speed and waveform.
-Isolated PSU rails.
-Alps RK27 Blue Velvet Potentiometer (I’m not joking).
-All industrial standard parts, you won’t find anything subpar here. No generic parts at all.
-Comes in standard gain of 3 or high gain of 6. (Your choice)
-Drives almost anything except the notorious K1000.

Yes, the name Le Fantôme is suggested by chchyong89. In French it means “the phantom”, which is somewhat relevant to my username.

Date of Release (estimated):
Around middle of June.

*Refer second post for the lending/testing program*

Giving an old Desktop Amp away for FREE.

I'm at the point where I have too many amps lying around that I don't use. So I've decided to give away an old amp that I built three years ago (now at wui223's house) and these are the following conditions if you want to try your luck:

1) You must have a decent source and headphones to boot. (otherwise what's the point really ) To elaborate, decent source means something that has a proper line out function. Ipods with LODs are fine, lowly PCM2702 based DACs are fine, but no on board realteks. Decent headphones means anything branded that is NOT an IEM/earphones that are easy to drive.
2) You must not be as rich as Akabane/Sep90 etc. <-- this is based on my own interpretation so I DONNO LOL.
3) I am perfectly aware that 2) contradicts 1), but I just want to pass this amp to someone who simply needs something good for their big cans (like students with HDxxx for instance).
4) random draw, so just try your luck lah. I only have one amp that I can give away. I have more to give away but most of it are naked/lack some aesthetic parts.
5) non of my close friends from the DIY circle can apply for this

Oh and I will be busy during my holidays to finish up some work so I won't be sending it to you so soon. (at least wait after 3 weeks :\) The output jack is also a bit f***ed so I'll need to replace it before sending it to you.

just leave your name and justify it. I favor students obviously.

NAME LIST(TO BE UPDATED)
1) tek
2) C-Note
3) kumanosuke
4) moniqee
5) Yuki Ijuin
6) Proclaimer
7) ArianneG
8) Najmods
9) windboy
10) looisc
11) deng8895
12) m3phisto
-bravo tube amp is based off sijosae's entry level tube amp. I
really don't know if solid states suits you better but I'll add
you to the list simply based on technical comparisons.
13) killz23
14) maxwelx64
15) Kaerna
-donation is not really necessary IMO. I'm not doing a charity with this based on my standards. I personally hate "wastes" so if someone is going to really utilize my "wastes" I'd actually be happier.
16) black_rain
17) genjo
18) studwo
19) Knightingale
20) 64bit
21) Bonchi
-you'd be surprised because Sq210A isnt meant to drive any headphones directly.
22) rxy
23) Dreamworks
24) teNtiOn
25) lynzax911

CLOSED

ppB Portable Headphone Amplifier

Inspired by the original PPA, PIMETA. I've always wanted to have a three channel portable amplifier that can drive almost everything using my favorite chips and transistors but the PIMETA uses dual opamps, and the PPA v2 is too large.

Hence the ppB is born. (a lame excuse really, but I needed something to practice before I venture into designing pcbs for higher end discrete amplifiers)

Specifications:
-2x 9V battery
-Discrete Class AB Push Pull Buffers (the name ppB implies Push Pull Buffers)
-Three Channel drive
-3x SOIC OPAMP
-On board trickle charger
-On board I/O Jacks and pot
-Measures 75x120mm size and fits into 1455J1202 Hammond Case.
-Double Layer PCB with silkscreen, soldermask and dual ground plane.

I'll post pics and moar info later. I has midterms this Thursday so bear with me. The prototyping boards have just arrived at my door step and I thought I should start this thread to ask for volunteers.

Prototyping:
-Only 3 up for grabs
-RM30 each piece (i'm absorbing 50% of the cost)
-You must promise to build it and provide feedback

Reviewer:
-I'll finish up a prototyping unit and it'll be passed around a few guys so I can have a subjective feedback on the sonics.

This project is half diy half commercial, I'll release boards for DIY if there is a sufficient demand. Us locals need cheap alternatives.
Headphone Amplifier Guide/FAQ

Quite a number of members privately asked me for information especially regarding the needs for an amplifier and almost all of them are misinformed. It drove me to start this guide, as to help most of them save money and make proper choices. The truth is, most of the time you don’t even need an amplifier.

DISCLAIMER: I’m writing this guide for people who have limited knowledge and exposure to this hobby and most of the scientific references are generalized so readers don’t have to take up an engineering course to make a solid and sane decision.

1) When should you be looking at an external headphone amplifier?

Conditions:

-You have a proper quality source with a line out function.
Source refers to anything that provides you your music. Source includes your mp3 player, your digital audio players, your DACs (digital to analog converter), your notebooks, your soundcards and anything else relevant. The main point is simple; your source must be of decent quality and most importantly have a line out feature to feed your amplifier.

What is a line out? A line out is a specific output that bypasses all internal amplifier blocks. The signal is untainted and is usually taken off directly from the I/V buffered stage of the amplifier. You don’t have to understand the jargon. To simply determine which source has a line out, the line output of your source outputs fixed voltage signal that it’s “loudness/volume” cannot be adjusted by any means. If the output volume is adjustable on the source, then it’s not a line out. Most mp3 players do not have such feature. Only a select few such as the IPOD, older Sony players have it. In some cases when you're going with the trend and bought yourself a USB based DAC or a pricy Soundcard for your computer desktop, even if the volume is changeable through windows, it's still considered as a valid line output. The best method for lowest voltage loss usage is to maximize the volume output on your Windows' Sound and Devices. If you are not using a line out capable source, don’t bother looking for an amplifier. Adding another amplifier in the signal chain is akin to adding wheels to a 4WD car. It’s pointless and might even worsen quality. Given the same analogy, you want to improve the performance of your tires by changing them, not adding more tires.

To answer some doubts you might have till this point, a properly configured line out has no control over the volume output, and thus the role of an external amplifier here gives you the function of changing the volume.

-You have quality headphones/earphones to start with.
All headphones/earphones improve significantly with good amplification. However, where do we draw the line? To determine whether your headphones/earphones deserve good amplification, simply pay attention to the two headphone specifications mentioned below:

Impedance:
The lower it is, the easier it is to be driven.
16 Ohms – 64 Ohms are considered easy.
>100 Ohms are considered difficult.

Sensitivity:
The higher it is, the easier it is to be driven.
No specific number. It depends on how loud you usually listen to. I’d say a conservative 100dB/mW is considered easy to drive.

Those being said, to add, anything that is not considered “audiophile” quality does not warrant an amplifier.

To end, if you cannot satisfy both conditions, please save your money.

2) Should I get a portable amplifier for my portable setup?

For 90% of the situation, no you don’t. I’m going to assume that your portable setup consists of easy to drive earphones and relatively quality portable players.

To elaborate, most of the time your setup either don’t fulfill the conditions mentioned in 1) or that the entire setup is already properly working to begin with. I’ve gone through portable setups before and experience plus on paper calculations convinced me that there is almost no difference when you add a portable amplifier to your setup. It adds weight and nuisance. If you’re not a hardcore audiophile, don’t bother.

Portable amplifiers usually only applies for a select few of portable players. For instance, the Ipods or anything on par that offers quality line output as mentioned in 1), players like the legendary Iriver H1xx series that offers digital output so you can feed it into a DAC. Anything else is a waste of money getting a portable amplifier.

3) Portable Amplifier or Desktop Amplifier?
<to be added later>
4) Tubes or Solid States?
<to be added later>

I'll be adding more stuffs soon. At the moment, 1) and 2) are the most frequently asked.

Thank You.

P.S. If there are anything else you want to add or correct, let me know. This guide is intended for common folks and non-fanatics, so I'd appreciate it if we keep audiophilia induced subjectivity out of this thread.

Any good words on Malaysian Insitute of Arts?

Criteria: Focuses on handwork, fine arts mostly.

Well I'm not well versed in the art field since I do engineering myself. My brother might be taking up one of these options and I was wondering which one has a better bang for buck and quality.

ToA gives me similar vibrant of excess marketing (liek LKW) but I heard it's still tons better than LKW and I'd hope someone can correct my initial bias towards ToA.

I heard some decent word recommendations for MIA, however it has the eccentricity of not being recognized by Malaysian Garmen (ironically accepted by other advance countries).

[addedon]March 25, 2009, 1:49 pm[/addedon]No one has any insight?
The group purchase is catered to only Audio DIYers. Since I know most of the DIYers won't even bother looking at the Bulk Section, it makes our lives easier if this thread was to be back where it's suppose to be.

We always have group buys in the section and it never seems to cause any problems and end up being moved to other sections.

Please and thank you.

Millett Hybrid Mini-Max

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f6/new-mille...-thread-348235/

Refer Thread.

In summary, the two guys who brought us Millett Hybrid Max has started another similar project to provide the community with convenient all-in-one-package parts which is now known as the Millett Hybrid Mini-Max. Group buy will commence quite soon, and I am willing to offer LYN local audiophile community my service to assemble and build this very tube hybrid amplifier. There are a few things to note.

There are subtle changes in performance, but a significant change in aesthetics and board layout:

1) Board is MUCH smaller, and they had Lansing to provide custom case specifically for this amplifier. Everything is ALL IN ONE, that includes even the case .
2) Better PSU ground plane. Though not really a huge difference comparing to the original larger Millett Hybrid Max
3) Smaller sized, meaning less flexibility to install exotic components.

How will I do it:

1) My final exam ends at October 16th and I will have 3 weeks of holiday to screw around. If the group buy starts before that I'll start ordering the cases, the boards and parts and build will commence around mid October. My prediction is that they will only complete everything by latest early October. So you don't actually have to wait for a long time.

2) Minimum of at least 5 units order to get me motivated.

3) If you're interested, please leave your names. There will be a need for a deposit once things start going and to acknowledge your seriousness. This thread is just a heads up for you guys. Things won't happen very soon so take your time to think carefully. I will notify everyone once TomB and Cetoole started their group buy.

4) Oh wait, speaking of price, since this is quite a "luxurious" amplifier to begin with, they might linger around RM800-RM1200 (ballpark figure, based on Empire23's Millett Hybrid Max build) depending on how exotic you want your components to be. It is also impossible for me to give you any strict pricing because I have 0 information on the price of the board and case.

Oh and I'll update the type of configurations later.

http://www.diyforums.org/MAX/

You can read up more info using this site.

Thank you.

Check if Argument is an integer.

Guys,

I have a function that checks whether the input is an integer, within the range of integer, and re-prompts for correct input if the input is out of range and is not an integer. However it does not work.

Here's an instance:

Options
[1]
[2]
[3]

You have 3 options. I can only enter 1, 2, or 3. Anything else will give an output: "Enter 1-3 only!")

It's sorta for my assignment.

My function code is as the following:

CODE

#include<stdio.h>
#include<cstdlib>

int checkdigit(int a,int b)
{
while(!(a>=0 && a<=b))
{
printf("!!!Enter only (1-%d)",b);
printf("Choose again:");
scanf("%d",&a);
}
return a;
}

int main()
{
int a,b=6; //b simply sets the upper limit of the options, if b=6, means I have options 1 -> 6.
scanf("%d",&a);
a=checkdigit(a,b);
printf("%d",a);
system("PAUSE");
return 0;
}

It works for integers, however if i enter characters the program, it'll just loops endlessly and goes haywire.

Any ideas?
