AVR + bookshelf speaker Reccomendations

Hey all,

So I'm in the market for a new AVR+ Speaker setup after living with one of those 1k Phillips bundled packages for a few years. Any recommendations would be a great help as my knowledge in this field is next to nothing.
Requirements are as follows

Budget: RM2 - 3k

AVR
Must haves:
HDMI in/out
USB port

Optional Extras
5.1 (having an option to upgrade speakers later on would be a big plus)
Digital Audio Input

Speakers:
I'd prefer a decent 2.1 setup over a cheap 5.1.... (actually I take that back, 2 half decent bookshelves would do, not a big fan of the woofer)

Thanks!

B-Net Server Connection Issues

[VENT]

So, I have to ask. Am I the ONLY one experiencing server connection issues?

I connect to B-Net, it logs me on but I can't do squat, even after repeated re-logs, and even client restarts. Symptoms include being unable to load any maps, or join games (Coop, or Custom) and various screens (Achievements, Multiplayer, My own friggin Profile screen, quickmatch) not loading at all. I know IAH Games has had issues with their servers before, but seriously?

I would like to say that this happens only during peak hours, but it doesn't. I'm currently running a 1mbps stimix line, so bandwidth and latency don't seem to be an issue. Nothing seems to remedy it other than pure random chance.

edit: Even if the screens do load, the matchmaking thingy doesn't work.

[/VENT]

p.s. My apologies if there is a thread similar to this.

[addedon]August 14, 2010, 9:05 pm[/addedon]oh, and before anyone posts.... I've tried the official IAH Games BNET connection issue cure all @ http://sea.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/26753143 , Didn't do bupkiss...

Network woes, able to ping websites but...

G'day all, here's the problem

A computer loaded with Windows Xp sp2, is connected to my soho network, can see the other member clients in the soho. Is able to access the router gui page, and can ping random websites like google.com and yahoo.com.

Yet for some reason I can't access any webpage other than the router gui page using any browser, ala Firefox, Opera, IE.

I've done the following in an attempt to cure this problem to no avail.

1) disabled ALL firewalls. (The crappy in-built Windows protector rubbish and AVG anti-virus)
2) tried auto-repairing the conncetion.
3) changed NIC's and CAT5 cables
4) Manually set the ip for the access point.

Is there anything that I've missed out? or is there anything that can be done short of reinstalling Windows?

Thanks in advance

Cheerio
This has to be one of the more obscure and stranger titles of the season. Produced by Madhouse, Ohedo Rocket has got to be one of the more interesting and amusing titles. The character designs are superiorly random. From Sin-chan like designs, super mario as a traditional ji-chan, and random monsters galore. Well directed and choreographed action scenes. It's pure sheer madness!

For a look at the chara's follow this link

http://www.ohedorocket.jp/chara/index.html

And yes, they're actually animated like that

LordSeta's Guide to identifying Bootleg Anime DVD

Disclaimer: Yes we get it, All crap a YYY is bootleg, The whole reason behind this thread is to FURTHER educate you in the fine arts of legit anime connoisseuring

NOTE: Due to failic intarweb unable to upload images at the moment

What is Bootleg Anime DVD
Simply put, it's anime that has been obtained illegally without purchasing the rights of the Anime from the right channels.

How do I know which is Bootleg and Which is legit?
Quite simple, Just because it has those Sijil Penapisan Filem doesn't make it legit.

Point 1: First looks (The Package)

(saved for image)

This is a picture of a legit copy of Boys Be Volume 3, Produced by Odex Private Limited (Singaporean Company)

First thing you notice is the fact that it only has 3 Episodes. Which is how Anime is distrobuted in forms of DVD.

(saved for image)

This however is a picture of a bootleg copy of Outlaw Star, Produced by DVDshop2001 (Taiwanese based)

Here you have the ENTIRE series of 26 episodes in 3 DVD's. This is typical of bootleg releases since all they care about is providing relatively cheap merchandise to attract those who are not well aquainted/those who can't be bothered to buy legit stuff.

Point 2: The DVD itself

(saved for image)

This is the DVD for Volume 3 of Boys Be, although it's not noticable in the picture, the dvd itself is of a much more superior make than the bootleg that is going to be showed later.

Also on the reverse side you can see the fine print "Boys Be"

(saved for Image)

This however is the DVD for Outlaw Star. Looks okay at first glances, but upon close inspection I've discovered that it uses a more inferior dye.

In comaprison the reverse side has no fine print on the inner rim of the DVD, save for it's batch

Point 3: Playing the DVD

Although it's not really noticable to the untrained eye, the quality of the video is quite different when you compare both. Also you might want to take into account the translations. Most of the Taiwan/hongkong bootlegs have rubbish English

Translations, you're better off not buying them at all if you dont understand Japanese at all (and i'm not talking about being able to understand desu, or dam-me or chigau, I'm talking whole proper sentences). Actually some of the translations are remeniscent of old Anime-Junkie Fansubs.

What should I stay away from?

There are 2 known bootlegs that are in circulation here in Malaysia they are

CODE

DVDSHOP2001 and Mac (Manga Anime Cartoon DVD)

Note:
there is also a local distrobuter of anime that goes by the name of MTV (yes like that music channel). This company is also quite dubious seeing as they rip their translations from fansubs. Most notably their Hellsing VCD release which blatantly ripped off the translations off a fansub group *which group i forget*

What should I get?

Seeing as most people aren't aware that there are Singaporean legit releases, try looking for Odex dvd's, they're legit, high quality, and with proper translations to boot.

If you're absolutely loaded, get the american stuff, but those are only for Region 1 DVD's so make sure you have a DVD player that is region free or have a Region 1 DVD player.

If you're loaded, patient, and are proficient in Japanese, import them straight from Japan, however a due note of warning, the DVD's themselves cost a bomb, and not to forget the insane shipping prices from Japan. (Cost me 40 USD just to ship a couple of light FMP novels which only cost 20 USD)

And voila' you're educated in the most basic of basics on what bootlegs are. Go forth, and support the production studios! If you don't we might not have any superior animu in the future!

Notebook HDD problems

So my ancient Sony Picturebook has some missing Windows system files, preventing me from booting the damn thing and tells me to use the Windows CD to repair it, problem is, i aint got no cd-rom on it.

Which lead me to believe that if i took it apart and get the hdd out, maybe i can fix the missing windows files. Problem is, I can't just drag and drop them missing files into the Windows folder.

Is there anyway for me to fix it?

Do take note that the PCG-C1VN does NOT have a floppy disk drive either

Danke

update

This is what I get when I can't boot up and it tells me to fix it

CODE

Multi(0)Disk(0)partition(1)\Windoes\System32\NTOSKRNL.exe
Multi(0)Disk(0)partition(1)\Windoes\System32\HAL.dll
Multi(0)Disk(0)partition(1)\Windoes\System32\KDCOM.dll
Multi(0)Disk(0)partition(1)\Windoes\System32\Bootvid.dll
Multi(0)Disk(0)partition(1)\Windoes\System32\Config\System
Multi(0)Disk(0)partition(1)\Windoes\System32\Config\System.alt

Windows could not start because of the following file missing or corrupt

Windows/System32/Config/System

update2

Opened it up, ripped the HDD out, copied the windows CD into the HDD, put everything back only to find out that I can't boot in CMD prompt.

The Classic VW Beetle Thread

So yeah, I recently inherited my late Granddad's 1966 VW beetle, and after driving it around for a while I've come to the conclusion that it's a monument of a car. But then again, it had an engine overhaul, a bastardized airconditioner installed, as well as redone electrics. *Man it took me 2 years to freaking look for a decent VW workshop

Even so, a monument of a car. Sure the pick-up sucks and the leaf springs and break drums aren't cutting edge, but when you're driving what is considered by JPJ as an antique, and a tank no less, you have some sort of pride which is unexplainable.

That and screaming down the highway at 70mph overtaking most other kit cars it really is a beautifully car

Come On! A show of force of the Classic VW Beetle!

Free SSH is it feasible?

After reading the numerous posts on how paid corperate SSH is doing wonders for everyone's torrents, I embarked on a mission to see if I can find a free alternative.

1) I've found many free SSH applications, (Currently using PuTTY)

2) I've had no luck locating off-shore proxy servers that serve SSH encryptions for free

So I appeal to the more techinically skilled peoples of lowyat, "HARBL!"

p/s unsure where to chuck this thread, relocate if required

Update 1

Thanks to wkKay said 'free' SSH has been brought to my attention
http://www.chrisbrunner.com/?p=115

Update 2
Sponsor has been found, currently engaged in pinging said host with a series of free proxy servers to determine which is best suited for purpose
