Gran Turismo 5 Driff Wannabe

This thread is for discussion and sharing about driffting. Some friends asked me how, so as well I create a topic.

My driff is no where close to good, but cool enough. Some pictures from my collection.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/254/rx786.jpg/
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/43/rx7862.jpg/

And some short video on RX7FC stock using handbrake + power over driff downhill

Requirements for driffting,
1) STEERING WHEEL - a logitech wheel, mines is Logitech Force EX only 200 degree, 900 degree need faster reaction.
2) PROTECTION - Turn off your steering wheel power adapter, less damage to your lovely wheel, and easier to turn the wheel rapidly, the downside is you feel numb. My wheel already damaged with loose screw holes. In order to continue to use, I have to turn off the power adapter.
3) CAR - a FR car with all AIDS off except ABS... recommended to use RX7FC... easier to control
4) TYRES - comfort tyres for low hp car, sport hard for high hp car
5) TECHNIQUE - with some experience in Rally... you need to familiarize with braking point and your car nose pointing direction
6) CAR TUNING - Dont need any knowleddge to tune, just use RX7FC stock and start driffting, Once familiar with car behaviour then only fine tune according to your taste, dont tune the car too stiff, else counter steer will never able to recover your car. damper front and rear and anti roll set to all 6 max, you can change depend on your taste.
7) DRIFF TRACK - usually track with walls. like Tokyo. My favourite is Special Stage Route 5.
8) PHYSICAL EXHAUSTION - your hand muscle will be tired after 30 minutes of exercise.

My style/technique of driffting
1) Follow racing lines,
2) Follow grip style braking point
3) At corner, turn your wheel more agressive until your nose pointing inwards
4) As soon as the car start to slide, counter steer + throttle control to maintain driff angle. At this point the car must remain on racing line.
5) Exit corner with full grip.

In my opinion, the hardest part about driffting :
1) counter steer works, you need to counter steer early before your car is about to slide else you will end up oversteer. This need to feel and practise.
2) throttle control, step on the throttle if you need to oversteer, then maintain the throttle level to maintain your driff angle, and finally release throttle if you want to regain traction.
3) understand the weight shift in the car. You need to watch videos on how those driffter out there turn the steering wheel and how the G-BALLS rolls.

For newbie driffter, the easiest way to get sliding is :
1) 4WD car with low grip tyre like comfort tyre.
2) pull the handbrake at corners. The duration on how long you pull handbrake is important, usually around 0.2~1s for 90 degree corner, U-turn require to pull the handbrake longer a bit like 1s ~ 2s. Just an estimate. But dont pull the handbrake too long.
3) then try to corner out safely.
4) Then you may want to play with torque differential and adjust it to front 15% and rear 85% to get a feel like an FR car without the oversteer lost control problem.
5) another alternative to get a better satisfaction about driffting is --> Practise rally 4WD on snow.

Advance Driffter :
1) You may want to use MR machine to driff. It is totally different handling compare to FR cars.
2) once the car start sliding, you have to counter steer even much earlier than FR cars.
3) the speed of the car is must be just right for the corner. Too much speed will cause oversteer, and this takes a lot of practise to make it right.

About GT5 Driff event :
1) it is not about sliding anywhere on track
2) you need to driff your car very near to the inner corner to gain more points. or keep driffting your car on the racing line you will be getting a lot of points.
3) at the corner, you need to maintain your driff as long as possible
3) speed of the driff is not soo important.

Driffting during an online play :
1) avoid banging/scratching other cars.
2) when the car in front of you generating too much smoke for you to see clearly, you have to PREDICT your racing line!!!

Private Room Driff Kaki
1) adam_S4PH
2) hewtwok
3) syncnsky
4) ayiesz
5) anyone is welcome

Please share your pictures or car settings or driff technique or anything about driffting.

For those who is still unable to driff a car properly, this may be one of the place to get some tips from other forumer.

In the end, hope you have some fun driffting a car in a safe place... with restart button anytime.

Hope there are some driffter can advise/share more on this.
