PSU tripping circuit breaker

Recently I purchased components for a new rig, including a Corsair RMx 650w PSU. Today I put everything together, plugged it in and... The entire house tripped. Mind you I haven't even turned anything on yet. Even with the wall socket off of was tripping.

I had an electrician over to check my house wiring just in case (been meaning to do it anyway, so it was just the right time). He found nothing wrong, and his advice was that the PSU is bad - it's short circuiting. It's not the built itself because we also tested the PSU with nothing plugged in. It still tripped.

So, while I've contacted the seller for a replacement, I wanted to get some opinions. Was the PSU just faulty? Did I do something wrong somewhere? This is my first built in 7 years so I'm a bit rusty, but if the unplugged PSU is still shorting then it can't be me right? And more importantly, how safe are my other parts? If anything is damaged, can I make a claim from Corsair? It's after all their PSU that caused this.

Cheers.

Office 365 University

Having bought a couple of laptops recently, I was looking to get myself a couple of copies of Office. Office 365 University seemed like a good deal, and my girlfriend is still in college, so I thought 'why the heck not?'

I went to the Office store, went thru the procedures, and even had my gf's uni listed in the drop down menu. Now this is where it gets frustrating. No matter how many times I try, I'm told that the university email provided to my gf is "not a valid email address provided by XXX institution".

I went ahead and contacted Microsoft support, and today I received an email, the gist of which reads thus:

QUOTE

'Thank you for contacting Microsoft Store. I'd be happy to assist you with your concern.

The Office 365 University is currently not available in Malaysia.

I suggest that you get the Office 365 Home Premium or any Office 2013 suites available on your country.

We hope that this email answers all your queries.'

So apparently we don't qualify for this? Now why the heck would they do something like that, especially when this article provides a list of pricing for all packages, including the University edition?

I'm curious. Is Office 365 University really unavailable here? Has anyone successfully bought a copy?

Wasteland 2

So, Brian Fargo took to Kickstarter to get funds for this, and has raised over 1 million USD so far. All in 2 days. There's still 32 days left to go; who knows how much funding the project will ultimately get.

What's Wasteland you ask? Only one of the best RPGs ever made for the PC. It's the game that inspired Fallout. You can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasteland_(video_game)

I'm posting this here mainly to raise awareness. Pledge guys! Pledge! The more the project gets, the better the game the can give us. People who pledge at least 15 USD also get the game for free, so you're basically buying the game in advance. I've put in a hundred USD myself. Think about it... a game from Brian Fargo and the original team that created Wasteland, with music from Fallout/Fallout 2's composer, and a story by the co-creator of Fallout... for 15 USD. Worth every penny!

Go here if you want to pledge: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2

Fantasy in general

Judging by the other thread, polling our favorite genres, we have alot of fantasy buffs here. What better to do then to talk about our favorite series, author, hero etc? Discuss the books we've read, and introduce others to the books we like!

I'll start. Some of my favorite fantasy books include: George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt, and Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. The shortest of these is four books long, and the longest (not in terms of volumes, but sheer pages) is a whooping 11 books and counting - I'm speaking of the Wheel of Time.

Amongst my selection, I think ASOIAF and the Book of the New Sun may not be as well known. Both are very good series, but quite different from your standard sword and sorcery adventures. ASOIAF has a more medieval theme to it - knights, warring states, political intrigue. Its been compared to the war of the roses in fact. Magic does exist in the universe, but its a lost art and seldom factor into the story. Definitely something you should read if you're looking for fantasy beyond the norm.

The Book of the New Sun on the other hand, is as much fantasy as it is sci-fi. Instead of being set in the past, it explores a future where technology has regressed, and humanity once again exist in a dark ages settings. Remaining artifacts of technology are often treated like magic, but our hero, Severian, carries but a two handed sword called Terminus Est. Its important to mention that Severian is a hero unlike any other. He is an executioner and a torturer, not a noble knight or mage.

Well, these are my favorites and recommendation. What's everybody's?

R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt Do'Urden

Ah, Drizzt Do'Urden, the dark-elven ranger of Icewind Dale. If you've read fantasy, you've probably come across Drizzt. With his ebony skin and shock of white hair, and his twin scimitars Icing-death and Twinkle, Drizzt has adventured with fantasy readers in nineteen books since The Crystal Shard was published in 1988. Ironically, Drizzt was meant to be a support character to Wulfgar the barbarian, but readers clamored for more Drizzt adventures, and eventually he took over as the main character of his books.

Drizzt's adventures are set in the Forgotten Realms, a setting for the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game. He is, in fact, the most well known character in said setting. The books don't however, require a knowledge of D&D to be enjoyed, so don't let that stop you from picking them up.

In chronological order:

The Dark Elf trilogy, featuring Drizzt as a young drow in the underground city of Mezzoberranzan and his eventual journey to the world above. Consist of:
Homeland (1990)
Exile (1990)
Sojourn (1991)

The Icewind Dale trilogy, actually the first series published, with Drizzt adventuring in the frozen land of Icewind Dale. Consist of:
The Crystal Shard (1988)
Streams of Silver (1989)
The Halfling's Gem (1990)

The Legacy of the Drow quartet, telling the tale of the drow's invasion of Mithral Hall, home to Drizzt and friends, with Drizzt having to deal with his pass. Consist of:
The Legacy (1992)
Starless Night (1993)
Siege of Darkness (1994)
Passage to Dawn (1996)

Path of Darkness quartet, with Drizzt dealing with the aftermath of the attempted drow invasion, and his adventuring along the Sword Coast of the Forgotten Realms. Consist of:
The Silent Blade (1998)
The Spine of the World (1999)
Servant of the Shard (2000)
Sea of Swords (2001)

The Hunter's Blade trilogy, which tells the tale of yet another invasion on Mithral Hall, this time by orcs led by King Obould Many Arrows. Consist of:
The Thousand Orcs (2002)
The Lone Drow (2003)
The Two Swords (2004)

The Transitions Trilogy, mainly a story to bring Drizzt from the old D&D universe to the new one. Currently two books have been published, with the third expected in October. Consist of:
The Orc King 2007
The Pirate King 2008
The Ghost King October 2009

Writing wise, these books are nothing to shout about. Salvatore is good at describing sword fights, but is otherwise a simple writer. He does attempt to write about morality and such, especially in the 'Drizzt journal excerpts' that begins every chapter, but it can sometimes come across as overly dramatic. Still, Drizzt racing across the tundra, cutting orcs and goblins to shreds with his scimitars whirling around him, is reason enough to read these books.

Michael Crichton's Book Club

The late Michael Crichton, probably one of the most well known contemporary sci-fi writer due to the success of Jurassic Park, deserves a thread of his own. He has written more then 20 books over 30+ years, few compared to machines like Stephen King, but prolific non the less. Most of his early books were written under a pen name and may not be very well known, but his latter books were mostly blockbusters, with numerous films made from them. More on him at wikipedia.

Books written as Michael Crichton:

The Andromeda Strain
The Terminal Man
The Great Train Robbery
Eaters of the Dead
Congo
Sphere
Jurassic Park
Rising Sun
Disclosure
The Lost World
Airframe
Timeline
Prey
State of Fear
Next

I'll try to write some reviews for these books later on in the thread. Feel free to chip in a review or two if you're a fan as well.

Anime Songs Playing Band

Its never easy to have a love for playing the opening and ending songs of animes, especially when you can't read moon runes and have no idea where to find tabbed songs. Last night lying in bed and tabbing out Polaris no Namida (the end theme for Telepathy Shoujo Ran), it struck me that maybe other people are doing the same thing. Abit of thinking further led me to consider these:

1. If there's anyone out there tabbing songs, could we share these?

2. Does anyone want to get together and play some anime songs?

Also! Does anyone have an OK tab for Akatsuki no Kuruma? I still can't find one and Gundam Seed was what, 5 years ago?

Oh, and don't suggest asking in the musicians corner of Lyn. This is strictly otaku business mmkay?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right, here's a list of interested people with the instruments they play. We don't have to make this a permanent band, just maybe meet up and jam, and members can float in and out. If we get good enough we can play at some conventions maybe? Dreams heh. Hey, if you CAN'T play any instruments but wanna link up and learn or something, by all means! Or you can be like Mikuru chan and play the tambourine.

Don't tell me you can't play the tambourine k?

1. dishwasher (guitars, can sing abit)
2. Myclamyra (bass)
3. Stone (drums)
4. kusakabemisao (guitars and oops sorry I missed you)

For now it seems like we'll be doing Ash Like Snow, and its sung by a girl, so here's the deal. Don't make us do an abomination version of the song! If you can sing like a girl (hopefully you're a girl lar) then come join us!

Its abit surprising no one has mentioned this show. The main character is Itoshiki Nozumo (糸 色望), which when written together means Despair (絶望). He's pessimistic to the point of being suicidal, but gets saved by a girl while trying to hang himself from the branch of a cherry tree. The girl later turns out to be one of his students in school.

The art style can be slightly odd, but the humor sure had me in stiches throughout the whole episode.

Screencaps? Too lazy. Go watch it lar.

Edit: My bad! Or rather lyn's search function's bad. A thousand apologies!

Gaming over a Wireless router

Cutting to the chase, I'm moving house, and will have to share a line with a few housemates. Some of them suggest getting a wireless router so we can avoid threading lines all over the house. Thing is, I play WoW, so I'm wondering whether using a wireless router will give me lag.

If you DO recommend a using a wireless modem, then what brand/model would you suggest?
