Law requiring minority to learn Mandarin

China approves 'ethnic unity' law requiring minorities to learn Mandarin

China has approved a sweeping new law which claims to help promote "ethnic unity" - but critics say it will further erode the rights of minority groups.

On paper, it aims to promote integration among the 56 officially recognised ethnic groups, dominated by the Han Chinese, through education and housing. But critics say it cuts people off from their language and culture.

It mandates that all children should be taught Mandarin before kindergarten and up until the end of high school. Previously students could study most of the curriculum in their native language such as Tibetan, Uyghur or Mongolian.

The law was approved on Thursday as the annual rubber-stamp parliamentary session drew to an end.

"The law is consistent with a dramatic recent policy shift, to suppress the ethnic diversity formally recognised since 1949," Magnus Fiskesjö, an associate professor of anthropology at Cornell University said in a university report.

"The children of the next generation are now isolated and brutally forced to forget their own language and culture."

However, Beijing argues that teaching the next generation Mandarin will help their job prospects.

It also says the law for "Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress" is crucial for promoting "modernisation through greater unity".

The law was voted and passed on Thursday at the National People's Congress in Beijing, which has never rejected an item on its agenda.

The law also provides a legal basis to prosecute parents or guardians who may instil what it described as "detrimental" views in children which would affect ethnic harmony and it calls for "mutually embedded community environments" which some analysts believe could result in the break up of minority-heavy neighbourhoods.

The Chinese government started to push for what it describes as the "sinicisation" of minority groups in the late 2000s and create a more unified national identity by assimilating ethnic groups into the dominant Han culture.

Han Chinese make up more than 90% of the country's 1.4 billion people.

Beijing has long been accused of restricting the rights of minority ethnic groups in regions like Tibet, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia.

Critics say assimilation has often been forced on people in these places - a state-led policy that has accelerated under Chinese leader Xi Jinping who has taken a harder line on dissent and protests, especially in areas home to minority ethnic groups,

In Tibet, the authorities have arrested monks, and taken control of monasteries to ensure they do not worship the Dalai Lama.

When the BBC visited a monastery that had been at heart of Tibetan resistance in July last year, monks spoke of living under fear and intimidation.

"We Tibetans are denied basic human rights. The Chinese government continues to oppress and persecute us. It is not a government that serves the people," one of them told us.

In Xinjiang, human rights groups have documented the detention of a million Uyghur Muslims in what the Chinese government calls camps for "re-education", while the UN has accused Beijing of grave human rights violations.

The BBC's reporting from 2021 and 2022 found evidence supporting the existence of detention camps, and allegations of sexual abuse and forced sterilisation, which Beijing denies.

In 2020, ethnic Mongolians in northern China staged rare rallies against measures to reduce teaching in the Mongolian language in favour of Mandarin.

Parents even held children back in protest at the policy as some ethnic Mongolians viewed the move as a threat to their cultural identity. Authorities moved quickly to crackdown on what it saw as dissent.

The Communist Party says it embraces different ethnicities. The country's constitution states that "each ethnicity has the right to use and develop their own language" and "have the right to self-rule".

But critics believe this new law will cement Xi's push toward assimilation.

"The law makes it clearer than ever that in Xi Jinping's PRC non-Han peoples must do more to integrate themselves with the Han majority, and above all else be loyal to Beijing," Allen Carlson, an associate professor of government at Cornell University said, referencing China by the initials of its official name.

This focus on development and prosperity is "telling", Professor Ian Chong of the National University of Singapore told the BBC.

"It is easy to read this language as meaning that minority languages and cultures are backward and impediments to advancement."

Xi's approach towards minorities is "consistent with his idea of creating a great and strong Chinese nation with a northern Han core... minorities are seen as branching off from that core, and hence in some ways derivative," he adds.

"In practice, this has prompted concerns about further rounds of increasing control, diminution, and even crackdowns on minority cultures and languages

sos

So what say you /k?

Alaskan Airlines door that flew off

https://www.opb.org/article/2024/01/08/port...r-plug-in-yard/

The Portland teacher who found the door plug that fell off a Boeing 737 Max 9 while in flight on Friday night thinks the trees in his backyard may have helped preserve evidence.


“The trees broke the fall like an airbag would,” said Bob Sauer, a science teacher at Catlin Gabel School. “So, it didn’t hit the ground very hard.”

Sauer heard about the incident Friday. But didn’t check his garden until Sunday, after a friend told him a cell phone from the flight had been found on a nearby street.

Sauer said he pulled out a flashlight and noticed something white in a tree.

Related: Before a door plug flew off a Boeing plane, an advisory light came on 3 times

“So my heart started beating a little faster,” he said. “I was thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, could this really be it?’ Sure enough it was.”

He said if the door had hit the house, it would have been bad.

“I think it’s pretty likely that it would have come at least through the roof. Or made a big dent in my car,” Sauer said. “So I’m really glad it landed where it did.”

After finding the door, Sauer called the National Transportation Safety Board. Staff there requested a picture, as someone had already been called out to check debris nearby that turned out to be a broken light lens.

NTSB agents arrived at Sauer’s home in Southwest Portland at about 7 a.m. Monday, with a truck and gloves to extract the door plug and drive it away. They gave Sauer a patch and a medallion.

Sauer is not a flight engineer but said he didn’t see anything obviously wrong with the door plug.

“It looked like it was the normal shape of a fuselage,” he said. “No kinks in it, or anything like that.”

He said he didn’t touch it for fear of destroying evidence.

Sauer said NTSB staff were both surprised and happy the door remained intact.

He was intrigued to see the door plug’s serial number and other manufacturing details apparently handwritten on the door in permanent marker.

“That’s an interesting way of doing inventory control,” he said.

Writing on the door plug says it was manufactured in Malaysia.

Asked about the handwriting, Boeing said they couldn’t address the issue because of the active NTSB investigation.

Sauer said he also asked NTSB staff whether the door fell off right above his home.

“They told me there was a 15 mph wind at the time,” he said. “And that because of the shape that this had — I mean it was curved like a plane fuselage — it would have done like a falling leaf on the way down. So that it wouldn’t have fallen straight down.”

Sauer burst into the news Sunday evening, when NTSB chair Jennifer Homendy told reporters the door plug had been found by “Bob,” a Portland teacher. Sauer said it was enough information that he almost immediately began getting emails from as far afield as Australia.

By the time he got to school Monday morning, everyone had questions.

“I’ve been mobbed by colleagues and students since I got here,” he laughed.

He said he spent the first 15 minutes of his class talking about it, “but students were more interested in the event than the science surrounding it.”

Sauer flies for vacations and prefers the window seat.

He’s booked a trip to Ireland this summer and fully intends to fly.

“Even with things like this happening, statistically it’s much safer to fly,” he said.

The Boeing 737 Max 9 jetliner was not being used for flights over large bodies of water, after a warning light related to a pressurization problem lit up on three different flights. Alaska Airlines restricted the aircraft so it could land quickly if the warning light reappeared.

The 171 passengers and six crew members returned to Portland International Airport safely Friday night, with no serious injuries reported.

More than 140 of the 737 Max 9 jetliners are grounded while the airlines await instructions on how to inspect them.

Salah faulty item, or salah installation?

Think out of the box to solve transboundary haze,

Think out of the box to solve transboundary haze, Yeo tells Nik Nazmi

Former minister Yeo Bee Yin today called on the government to “think outside of the box” when tackling transboundary haze pollution.

Speaking at a townhall session organised by the Natural Resources and Sustainability Ministry, Yeo rebutted the reasons behind the delay in implementing the proposed Transboundary Haze Act.

“You have to start thinking not about what you have done but what you can do, and that is the Transboundary Haze Act.

“I have suggestions, but they need to be considered whether they are applicable,” Yeo said at today's townhall, attended by Natural Resources and Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Yeo’s “out of the box” solution was to mandate Malaysian companies operating in Indonesia to disclose satellite data of their operations.

She cited the four Malaysian-linked firms that were singled out by Indonesia’s Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar in 2019 as the cause of starting some forest fires in Indonesia.

Siti Nurbaya reportedly stated that the plots of land of the four companies were sealed off as fires had been spotted on their property.

“Why did she only point out the four (companies)? Because there are no proper disclosure of our own companies which may lead to fingers being pointed at us. This isn’t good for our companies as well.

“The Transboundary Act is so that we can differentiate our Malaysian companies from Indonesia companies, and hence help us with our image as a palm oil plantation country,” she said.

The four companies were Sukses Karya Sawit, which is a unit of IOI Corporation (IOI), and Sime Indo Agro, which is a unit of Sime Darby Plantation (Sime Darby). IOI Corporation is a conglomerate headquartered in Putrajaya, while Sime Darby is a Malaysian government-linked corporation.

The other two companies Siti Nurbaya named were Rafi Kamajaya Abadi - a unit of Terengganu-owned TDM Bhd - and Riau-based Adei Plantation, owned by Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd.

Following this, Yeo - who was the then-energy, science, technology, environment and climate change minister - said her ministry was ready to draft the Transboundary Haze Act to punish Malaysian companies that caused haze in other countries.

In November this year, Putrajaya decided against the tabling of the proposed Transboundary Haze Act aimed at criminalising conduct that causes or contributes to haze pollution in Malaysia.

In a written parliamentary reply, Nik Nazmi said feedback from the attorney-general and legal experts led the government to conclude that there would be difficulties in obtaining the details needed for successful prosecution.

Singapore had in 2014 enacted such a law but as of today, no one has been charged.

Yeo, however, attributed the lack of implementation in Singapore to the Lion City not having many plantation companies compared to Malaysia.

“Malaysia has a lot of plantation companies that also have activities in Indonesia. That makes a big difference in how we can take action,” she said.

She called for the proposed act to contain a provision disclosing land data, for specifications on how a land was cleared before it is being purchased.

“It is thinking out of the box," she said, before adding it was merely her suggestion.

“I always read news reports that our companies are buying ‘slashed and burned’ land. They say they didn’t slash and burn it, but of course, it was bought after (the land was) slashed and burned,” she said.

Today’s townhall session is the first step in the ministry’s policy direction in tackling transboundary haze.

Nik Nazmi reiterated that Putrajaya is still open to enacting legislation on transboundary haze but wanted any enacted laws to be “truly effective and meaningful”.

Following today’s townhall, the ministry plans to hold a meeting with target groups before preparing a working paper that will be presented to the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Environment, Science and Plantation and the cabinet.

Nik Nazmi said that the ministry aimed to settle Malaysia’s policy direction on transboundary haze by the first half of 2024.

Is that why she got married to IOI guy? To understand how to tackle this issue better? lel Definitely out of the box

Which Side Would You Rather Choose?

Let's say the world is currently at a breaking point due to the ongoing Israel & Ukraine war, with other potential escalations in Taiwan and North Korea.

Hypothetically speaking, the world is now divided into two, and Malaysia is asked to pick a side. There is no longer standing on a fence, as the USA boldly claimed that if you are not with Us, you are against Us.

On one side we have the following:
US, Israel, EU, Taiwan, India, Japan, South Korea

on the other hand, we have
Russia, China, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Palestine, North Korea

What would you rather Malaysia do? The Doomsday Clock is ticking, and the country has to make a decision......

vs

If any of the coalition can commit to the following, I'll pangkah without question although considering the sensitive nature of the list, I doubt it would happen

1. Affirmative action beyond racial lines
2. Re-establish GST with better execution
3. Clear separation between court and politics
4. Education reformation which includes total curriculum revamp and the abolishment of all type of government school to just one type
5. No more lantikan politik to fill in GLCs based on connection alone, merit and competency should be all that matters
6. Tighter citizenship procedure which includes written and communication test
7. Better resource management with regards to the Public Sector
8. Clear policy to to address food security through agricultural initiatives
9. Health requirements and check up for all MPs to comply
10.

With 800rm price cut, Brand new ipong se 2020 (2nd generation) can be had for only 1200.

Cheapest in the market to draw android users in.

Also, with this kind of pricing, 2nd hand Ipong will be impacted. Ha ha. Pandan muka.

I wonder if they would bring it down to sub 1k to lure even more in.

edit: link here: https://apple.directd.com.my/iphone-se-2020
