She tells me, she is afraid to love

Greetings to my dear fellow forumers,
I would like to share a story here. A dear old friend of mine, Kathy, had a recent chat with me, and told me this:

There were two guys actively courting her, a Mr. Rich and a Mr. Average. Amongst the many, these are the better two, in Kathy's eyes. Kathy's mother prefers Mr. Rich, based on her own history of having to struggle with her husband to raise the family. For Kathy, both treat her well, but: Mr Rich is overconfident and possessive, whilst Mr. Average is rather obstinate at times, and does not listen her advice to him as much as she would like him to.

Kathy told me she decided to brush both of them off, which raised question marks in my mind. She told me, she's having a really hard time accepting any of them, or getting back into a relationship. She said that every since she broke off with her ex some months back (an unfortunate case of betrayal/3rd party intervention), she has a, how shall i put it, fear, in relationships. Is it the inability to love, or reciprocate the love showered unto her by her suitors?

As I am no guru in relationships, I'd like to ask here, in Cupids Corner:
What can I say, or do, to assist her, and perhaps get her to open up again, to understand love is out there for her?

Thanks in advance.

ADDON

Why So Trauma? (explained)
Her ex broke up with her on the grounds of "unable to cope with the pressure of love, and unable to take the relationship any further". He claimed that he cannot give her the happiness she wanted and even told Kathy's mom the reason and showed concern that Kathy might be suicidal. (Her mom believed him, and did not blame him). Kathy, however, knew he had someone else already (no details to me) but the ex denied such allegations. Now in recent months he did reappear in her life, but she pushed him away. Unfortunately, his reappearance probably caused her pain to resurface, thus making her in such a state she is now
