Watch out for low quality DisplayPort cables!

A week earlier I bought a DP Cable from lelong. To my dismay, it broke down pretty quickly. The cable they used is also apparently for HDMI, not DP, funny enough. You just bend the cable a bit and the plastic container breaks apart. Had a heated argument with the seller unfortunately, as she refused a refund. Too bad I didn't record the call. I wasn't particularly happy with how aggressive she's speaking, as if trying to lay the blame on me, which got me quite angry and I raised my voice. A mistake on my part, I like to be the calm guy after all. Since it's broken anyway, I took apart the cable and found out that it wasn't following the DP specs AT ALL, in MANY WAYS. A few cables are missing, and a cable, which isn't supposed to be connected, is connected.

This is how it's supposed to be connected!
[attachmentid=4145330]

PM me if you wish to know who I dealt with. However, here's a few tips to remedy future DP buyers, since DP monitors are finally getting popular.

a) Get a branded one according to this page http://www.displayport.org/products-database/

b) Force the seller to test the cable for you, or have them do a continuity test on pin #20. Pin #20 is the most dangerous pin, as it provides power, and one power is a source, and another is a sink. That's a recipe for disaster. Cable interfaces are not extensively protected in the semiconductor industry, to keep performance high. That's why they have standards.

c) See how many people have bought from the seller for that particular cable. Try go for 10 people at least. 2 or 3 is not good enough, Malaysians are a bit timid to complain.

As for some other tips:

1) Displayport cables can be cheap, I had someone offer me RM 150 for a Bizlink cable, which I managed to find somebody else selling the same cable for RM 60. Regardless, do b) and c).

2) More to come, maybe?

Good luck guys, I wasted RM 40 on this. I know, it ain't much, but hey, if you don't learn your lesson early, you're not going to learn your lesson when your loss is >RM500.

EDIT: With a new DAC+amp, it sounds good.

I've been pondering about my chat with rizvanrp about a year ago or maybe a few months ago (that the Huawei HG850a acts as a hub and sends packets to all ports).

So I finally decided to test a setup.

After configuring my DIR-615 given by TM by following rizvanrp's guide, I managed to do this.
It works. I'm just offering an alternative configuration.

OpenWRT 10.03.1-rc5 is out

I figured that OpenWRT should be better known to other people, since 10.03.1-rc5 is great ever since they revamped the whole interface. Just be warned, this doesn't make it an easy firmware to use. There's a crapton of settings in your face with openwrt, and it's not just one-click stuff like dd-wrt. It's meant to be modular, and modular it is.

[URL=https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=139188]
QUOTE(jow)

15 July 2011

The OpenWrt Release Team would like to announce a fifth release candidate (RC5) for Backfire Interim Release 1 (10.03.1). Testing of this release candidate will allow further refinement of 10.03.1

Binaries can be downloaded at http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/10.03.1-rc5/

Highlights since Backfire 10.03.1 RC4:

* Throughput and stability improvements in ath5k, ath9k and mac80211
* Various fixes in network configuration handling
* Switch to LuCI 0.10 branch
* Extroot partitions are no longer automatically mounted after a sysupgrade to prevent incompatibilities
* Various uhttpd, 6in4, 6to4 and base-files fixes
* Set ipk installed size metadata to compressed size, improves free space estimation
* Made pppd handle bad PADS frames more gracefully
* Fixed uci reorder command
* Improved configuration backup handling to only consider modified files
* Merged dualstack IPv4 & IPv6 firewall from trunk
* Integrated relayd support for client pseudobridges
* Fixed static route handling in dhcp client
* Support for the WNDR3700 v2
* Support USB 3g hot- & coldplug
* Add git branch support to feeds
* Add cmake support in buildroot
* Add autoreconfigure support to ensure proper libtool usage

New platforms:

* Lantiq Danube and Falcon platforms (lantiq_danube, lantiq_falcon) including ADSL and VoIP support.

Dropped platforms:

* The ifxmips port has been obsoleted by the Lantiq targets

Known Issues:

* Most open tickets at the time of the RC5 builds
* Currently 5 GHz channels do not work with mac80211 based drivers due
  to DFS regulatory issues.

More detailed information available at:

  https://dev.openwrt.org/milestone/Backfire%2010.03.1

Detailed core changelog at: https://dev.openwrt.org/log/branches/backfi...evs=24046-27608
Detailed packages changelog at: https://dev.openwrt.org/log/packages?revs=24046-27593

Yours truly,
The OpenWrt developer team

[/URL]

Supported hardwares: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start

The downloads: http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/10.03.1-rc5/

The site: http://www.openwrt.org/

Some pics.

This is not an easy firmware to use but you won't go back once you learn how to use it.

Recruiting: Unifi betatesters for OpenWrt

I've been working with klseet to make OpenWrt routers compatible with Unifi. However, I realised that klseet isn't online most of the time so I need someone else to help me test OpenWrt with unifi.

I have rizvanrp helping me at the moment. So I no longer need anyone else.

Prerequisites:-
- Unifi (obviously)
- A router which supports vlan of huge numbers (hence NO BROADCOM DEVICES) and OpenWrt. Usually they are Atheros routers. Check this site -> http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start
- Good English not required, but recommended.
- Online every night. The longer the better (I'm online most of the time except for ~12 AM to 9 AM). If you can online in the mornings EVEN BETTER.
- Yahoo messenger or MSN messenger account
- Dedicated for the two weeks (depends on how fast I do it) period of the beta test

I would've started this earlier if not for my studies. Now I have two weeks of holiday. I would've also done this myself if I have unifi.

Anyone interested?

Please post here/PM me your router model and version number.

If you have a router which can only operate using trunk builds, I can compile them for you. However, FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Also, with official releases, FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Currently, the latest official release is 10.03.1-rc4. It's release candidate, but it's better than 10.03.

Once you're a beta tester, I'll PM you my MSN ID

Most recommended router
TP-Link TL-WR1043ND

FAQ

Q:Why would I need a tester?
A: It's currently in 'proof of concept' stage

Q:What's after the beta test?
A: I'll be having people (you guys who uses unifi) sending me the default configuration of their router after flashing to OpenWrt so that I can support more routers.

Q: What about routers other than WR1043ND?
A: Check here. http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start They must support vlan tagging, and is not a broadcom. Each router has different versions, so bear that in mind.

Q: Should I simply buy anything from the table of hardware?
A: I prefer that you already have the router. I don't want to waste your money. Furthermore, it seems that some routers support vlan up to 4k, some don't. I'm pretty sure wr1043ND supports VLAN4K.. because I'm using VLAN ID 500 right now.

Realtek AC'97 drivers with better bass

I love experimenting with hardwares. A few days ago, I bought my father a brand new BenQ S42, so I get his old laptop. I installed Windows 7, played some games, watched some videos, hear some musics on this ancient Netburst (Pentium 4 architecture) notebook.

Fun and games? Windows 7 on this ancient notebook? That can't be happening too well, or does it? You're right, it's not going too well.

Windows 7 was slow and laggy. It doesn't like a single core notebook. Warcraft 3 was telling me it's not happy with the new OS. I reverted back in XP asap.

That doesn't explain why I'm writing this. Actually, it does. I found out Windows 7 has better sounds than XP. I never installed any drivers on Windows 7 (except for graphics drivers), I let Windows 7 handle it itself. How could Win7 find a better driver? Microsoft putting too much effort for win7?

Not really. Realtek had the drivers all along. The drivers which are automatically installed from Realtek's website lacks bass. Completely lacks bass, even with an earphone that should have have bass.

[/prologue]

I present to you, a way of unlocking this bass.

http://pastebin.com/SJb95RtQ

QUOTE

Getting bass out of AC'97 (done on an ALC 250 chip)
Computer settings:
Win XP SP3
Realtek ALC 250 chip

1. Download the latest AC'97 driver (zip or exe, does not matter. Choose the one for your OS) from here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/
2. Extract the exe or zip using 7-zip
3. Uninstall your current AC'97 driver
3. Go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager. Right-click Multimedia audio controller (sp?) > Update drivers
4. Select No, not this time > Next > Install from a list of specified location > Next > Don't search > Next > Have disk > Browse to extracted from step 2 > Open up WDM > Select alcxau.inf > Open > Ok.
5. There will be two drivers in the list, one signed, the other unsigned. Select the unsigned driver. Click next. Wait for driver to install. You're done.

EDIT1: Fixed a few stuff I left out by accident. The old guide is broken. This one is fixed.

Guide was done using the exe, not the zip, however.

I know this should be on guides but I want a little exposure. Mods, please transfer this thread where appropriate after waiting a little while, thanks

EDIT2: Someone help me think of a good thread name.

Tunngle: The ultimate Hamachi alternative.

http://www.tunngle.net/

http://www.tunngle.net/en/features/lan/

I'm surprised nobody knew of this. I tried searching the forum but couldn't find anything about it, except for only a single post.

It's exactly as the topic says, a Hamachi alternative, only 1000 times better. I do admit it has only arrived this year. I just wanted to spread the word. It should make thing easier when you want to LAN with your friends.

I'm still at university currently and I haven't done any testing. I can't be sure if it works for ALL programs in existence but it's hinting that it should. <insert well-known program here> works only for games, which sucks.

Here's a site that has already made tests to it.

http://versatile1.wordpress.com/2009/07/30...ernet-for-free/

To mods: I am pretty sure this program is not at all illegal. It's just a LAN emulator/zero-configuration VPN and nobody said it is wrong. A person can use a sword to kill, or to protect himself for example. However, if LAN emulators are explicitly not allowed to be discussed of, then I hold nothing against you deleting/closing this thread. Pardon me.

Hello everyone. From the creators of Zombie Plague Madness(or ZPM), here comes BIH (Blindbox's Institution of Havok). No, I do not own the server, my name is there for the lulz. Tired of building alone? Come join us!

Server IP: p.dustfever.com:27023
Server type: Dedicated Server
IRC Channel: irc.dustfever.com <--- You will be automatically sent to the channel.
Addons: UWSVN, Wiremod, PHX
Admins: konichiw4, Maleko aka Mo, blindbox aka n00bz0rs
Content: Half-Life 2 and Counter-strike Source (recently added)

This server was created by konichiw4 and Maleko. You can say I almost did not partake in any part of the server creation but I will host a backup server if they're down on weekends (I'm only available on weekends). If you need guide on installing UWSVN, Wiremod, PHX or guides on using Wiremod and UWSVN, come talk to us in IRC, we'll guide you through.

We don't really have a prop limit but we make up for that with active admins (unlike other GMod server, we allow you to create super duper tall structures just to watch it fall to the ground). So watch yourselves and happy building!

To mods: I have no idea where to post this.

EDIT: It's advisable for you to come to IRC. We usually brainstorm what to build there too.

I've attached a guide for gmod. Open the spoiler

QUOTE

How to play on Blindbox's Institution of Havok (BIH) Garry's mod server:
If you dont have the following addons, then you should continue reading this:

Phoenix-storms model packs
Wiremod
UWSVN

1 . Extract the zip file to "Garrysmod folder\garrysmod\addons"
4. Click "update svns.bat"
5. Keep clicking the OK button until there's no more. You'll notice repo.bat got deleted, no worries
6. Restart from step 3 if you screwed up step 5
7. Wait until everything finishes downloading.

To update your SVNs to the latest, just click "update svns.bat"

Please, please, please come visit us in the irc channel. We might not be in the server but in the channel instead.

EDIT: Guide redone, made it more idiot proof. I wish it can be even more idiot proof.

Server is down since Nov 24 until further notice. Sorry, and thanks for your support. I will still host on weekends but you'll have to come to the channel to join as it is on and off.
Exactly what the title said, I need help cleaning this laptop up. It belongs to my friend. Anyone wishes to guide me through it?

See this post.

http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...=0&p=28912750&#

There is no virus, just their traces. The antivirus took care of all the virus. For example, this ckvo.exe starts itself up, but has been eliminated. However, its startup is still there. I can fix that myself but since this backdoor managed to go through, I bet there are other viruses which has their traces.

Damages? None that I can see of.

I'd do a format myself if it was me but that's not an option.

Every 1 minute, my SE phone, W910i resets itself. I.e., black screen pop up, then it shuts down, then it restarts, then the searching service signal comes out. No, it's not standby mode. I played some games and it did that while I was playing it, so I am completely sure it resets itself.

Anyway, I've reset the phone but the problem persists. Anyone can help?

[addedon]July 5, 2009, 6:56 pm[/addedon]Well, what do you know, it seems like there's a virus inside the memory card.
Silverstone ST56F overheating

So I got this brand new rig with these specs.

Phenom II x3 720BE 2.8 GHz
MSI KA-790GX (sucky board, but nvm that)
WD 640GB
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4890
2x 2GB Corsair gaming ram(it costs the same as KVR that time)

I OCed my phenom II to 3.2 GHz at 1.3125 volts. I start doing full load tests, no crashes. Then I start increasing my HD 4890 volt to 1.4v and OC that as well. I start another full load test, it crashes and I had to wait a few minutes before I can start my pc back (typical psu overheating symptom). I can also crash the system by sending in 1.4 volts to my phenom II at 3.5 GHz btw(despite being stable).

Should I send this PSU back to RMA, or try an open-air system first to see whether my airflow sucks or not? Anyone has experience? I need to make a few comparisons. Sigh, I wish the fan would rev higher lol.

UPDATE: Tested the PSU open-air. Nada, system shuts down and I have to wait a minute before I can start the PC again at full load oc still. I'm not even close to the full potential of my chip arghh!

EDIT: A reminder, the psu is silverstone strider st56F

For example, 60.54 doesn't give me great speeds anymore. I managed to get 60.53, but the internet won't even move at all with that ip! 60.49 and 60.50 are quite the same, they're getting slower and slower, recently great ips for a timeslot(they suck at night). Amazingly, the worst of all, 60.51 is faster than before LOL. Same goes to 124.12.*.*. This happened very, very recently. Just a day ago.

By the way, looks like ip priorities have changed for me. I'm constantly getting 60.51 the most(which sucks) or 60.50(which sucks even worse). Other ips aren't too frequent with me. I'll try and get 60.48 some other time and see if it is fast or not. Don't count on me trying out 118.* ip, they're a pain to get(and slow too).

Please note that I had a very recent(2 weeks ago) lightning strike to my house, which made my internet pretty darn unstable(adsl light blinking sometimes, none of my equipments are broken). Maybe it's related (kills all ip but from that, leaves bandwidth for other IPs?). If I can't tolerate this adsl light blinking, I'll start spamming their 100 line with a complaint everyday.

However, overall, the connection is worse than before the lightning strike.

I have a Kingston 256 MB DDR RAM and it died on me today after 4 years of service. I want to RMA this thing but I do not have the case(I probably have it, so consider both cases), nor do I have any receipt. Where do I go to? I did not pull that "warranty void if pulled" sticker. I'm staying in Setiawangsa btw. They do have lifetime warranty, right?

I know I'm being a cheapskate, but like I care. I want my replacement.

Geforce fixed aspectratio scaling problem on winxp

If you do, please reply. I, after fiddling for around an hour on the Nvidia Control Panel (and google for explanation on what the hell are the stuff for) found a solution to fix this problem. I am using 178.24 on geforce 7600GS. I didn't find any workable fix for this, so hence the reason why I posted this. It was done through trial and error, changing each value and seeing whether it affects anything or not. It's still in beta stage though, need testers. For XP users only. It does work for vista users, but I haven't faced any problem with vista unable to do aspect scaling right.

Anyway, here are the steps.

1. Run the game you're having problem with. Check its resolution settings at the game's options.
2. Check your display OSD, see at what frequency/Hz it is running
3. Run Nvidia Control panel.
4. Under "Change flat panel scaling", choose "Use Nvidia scaling with fixed-aspect ratio"
5. Change your desktop resolution to the game's resolution and to the frequency obtained in 2. If you were unable to obtain it, then I guess you need to do all the steps for all the refresh rates.
6. Under "Manage custom resolutions", click Create, click Advance, choose from Auto directly to manual(if you accidentally choose others, click cancel, and click Create again and repeat step 6).
7. Change "Active horizontal pixels" to your display's native resolution(usually the bigger value, i.e. 1920 x1200, then it is 1920)
8. Change "Active vertical pixels" to your display's native resolution(usually the smaller value, now I don't need to say this again do I? ).
9. Click Test, click OK(if it exists), click Yes.

Now run your game again, fixed aspect ratio achieved.

Sheesh NVIDIA needs to get this fixed ASAP. Pity us DirectX 9ners.

Tell me if any of you see a Custom Mode Fail error. Distorted screens too.

EDIT:To mods, I do not know the appropriate section for me to post this. It isn't really declared to be working yet(it does work for me) so I won't be able to post at Essential guides do I. I also need the publicity(not for fame, but so that people know more of this) .

EDIT2: Usually, frequency gained from step 2 is the frequency you have set as your desktop frequency.

EDIT3: I'll edit this thread soon enough(when I'm not lazy) for the Custom Mode Fail fix. The distorted screens too. Both of them are very, very unlikely to occur though.

EDIT4:PM me if you need anything. Make a reference to this thread though, or I might not get what you are talking about.

Anyone remember this? Danamic LM10 heatsink

The LM10 looks very much like many other high-end heatpipie coolers, but instead of relying on the passive flow of heat through the heatpipes, LM10 sports a patent-pending electromagnetic pump enabling pump activity at much lower currents than previously possible. The pump moves the liquid metal through the pipes to move the heat faster. We will go deeper in our upcoming review.

We've been testing a LM10 prototype for a few days now, but we still have some tweaking of the text to do before we reveal how it performs. In the meantime, Danamics has announced that cooler will become available in stores near you soon, if not already. The cooler currently support AM2, AM2+ and Socket 775, but buyers will get a free Socket 1366 mounting bracket for free.

Other links:

http://www.techpowerup.com/76477/Danamics_...r_280_Euro.html

Reviews:
http://www.nordichardware.com/Reviews/?skrivelse=549

Its the company that went all hype about liquid metal cooling and the usage of magnetic field to move the liquid metal. Looks like it is ready. When the review is out, I'll update this post. One thing about this I was thinking about, if this is going to be on par with liquid cooling, you need the liquid metal to have an impressive specific heat capacity.

How good/bad am I?

Anyway, I got a program (it checks for all prime numbers within a range of value) which I was required to do for my homework. It went without a hitch but I need some help. How do I use the time function to display time in miliseconds(decimals) as well? It's not needed for my homework though, but I figure this program is quite cool for noobish benchmarking lol. Complete with documentation.

The slower version

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

CODE

#include<stdio.h>
#include<time.h>
#include<math.h>
/* This program took me quite a while to think about. The logic behind this test is to exclude 2 from being test, as it is a prime.
After checking it is not 2 and seeing that a remainder is produced from dividing it by 2 (indicating it is not an even number,
the only even prime is 2), the number is then divided and checked for primality using all odd numbers between 3 to a-1. I used a d
variable here to indicate that if neither if elseif statement in the loop is executed, then d is still zero after the loop, hence a
prime! This primality test is a brute force method, with a bit of intelligent thinking by removing even numbers to reduce time
needed to check the primality of extremely huge numbers. There are even faster methods of bruteforcing. However, it is not something
the class have learned so I do not think it is a good idea of introducing it. It is worth mentioning that the faster method requires me
to add only one line.
This program took me one hour to think about and do. Maybe I should've just grab a pen and paper to reduce the time, it really helps
on the thinking process :). I'm very sorry for the variable names. There are digit limitations, I'm using int anyway.
So here are two things I need help with:
1. The :Press Enter key to exit" thing, I want it to detect key strokes or something. I don't really need help on this though, I'll learn them sooner or later.
2. The time function.I need the decimal accuracy as well. I can't find it on google.

Anyway, here's the compiled version, the fast version, using MinGW.

Time to study more... haha this is fun.

Off topic:My firefox is doing 100% on the process for no good reason >.> I better reinstall.

Hello all sifus, I plan to make a new rig since hd 4870 is out, so any recommendations are very helpful.

Here's my spec:

PROC: Intel C2D E8400----------------------------------------------------------RM630
GC: ATi Radeon HD 4870-----------------------------------------------------RM919
HDD: Western Digital 640GB---------------------------------------------------RM285
PSU: Huntkey 550W TP---------------------------------------------------------RM149
RAM: TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX, DDR2-800, 4GB Kit, 4-4-4-12-------------RM390
DVD: LG 22x12x16x DVD-RAM-------------------------------------------------RM 90
MOBO: Biostar TP43D2-A7--------------------------------------------------------RM308
CASE: Undecided------------------------------------------------------------------RM200
DISP: Undecided, most probably 22"-------------------------------------------RM900~1000
TOTAL: RM3871 if monitor is exactly 900.

I need suggestions on display. Im thinking of getting viewsonic as samsung has issues (i see something like a bar on my brother's 19 inch LCD samsung display. My cd-rw drive broke pretty fast for my samsung too, though that's probably my dying old mobo).

I haven't decided on a case yet. If you have good recommendations, tell me, I prefer doorless(though that RAIDMAX Aztec looks awesome). Motherboard is not decided either but I have no plans of Crossfiring, I plan to overclock and I might be able to add RM 200~300 to cooling solutions for the gc and proc, but that's a different story.

Second hand products are welcomed to help me reduce cost .

Btw, I saw something nice...

QUOTE(lex @ Jul 19 2008, 03:03 AM)

Add about RM50/- more (around RM699/-) you can get 21.6" widescreen like BenQ G2110W (if you can find this one, seems all sold out at the moment.. )

Note: BenQ G2110WA has only VGA input, while BenQ G2110W has both VGA and DVI inputs.
[right][snapback]18668619[/snapback][/right]

21.6" is satisfyingly close to 22"

EDIT: Added stuff on monitor
EDIT2: I don't need crossfire

Recommend me a place for studying.

I've finished IGCSE (don't ask why I took IGCSE instead of SPM), and I can't find a place to settle down, other than UIA matriculations. Scholarships that you recommend are welcomed as suggestions. I've tried UM, but that frickin place is hard to apply(I bet I need to do it personally, since I didn't take SPM, yeah I've tried the form).

My first choice would be nanotechnology, second choice is nuclear physics, third choice in biotechnology and the fourth choices are microelectronics and electronics (either one, but I prefer microelectronics).

Any recommendations? Tell me if you need my results. I prefer not going to UIA, by the way, it is my last choice. Is it too late for me to choose (I've been going through searching a pre-university place for the last 2 months), and I'll have to stick with UIA?

I'm pretty sure there's nuclear physics, my elder brother's friend took it (at least I'm happy that there are malaysians that took this branch of science).
