PSU and Casing advice

I am building my new PC (everything new) and most probably will go a R5 1600+ GTX 1050 Ti setup. Depending on the price, I might go for the upcoming R5 2400G. As I sort out all the internals, I am really clueless on picking out a good case and PSU. I have allocated about RM400-RM500 for both components. At that price, what will be a good combo if I want a smaller case (I plan to get mATX mobo) while keeping everything quiet?

EDIT: I will opt for a Silverstone Strider Essential 500W PSU. Now all that's left is the case.

15.6" 4K or 17.3" FHD
I will be upgrading from an old Dell Vostro with 15.6" FHD screen. I am deciding between either to get a 4K screen or simply go bigger and retain the same resolution. I do some light gaming and spend most of my computer time browsing and watching videos - so I would want to get as good a screen as possible (ease on eyes, colour reproduction etc.). Here's my shortlist:

I am currently looking at the following laptop:
-Dell Inspiron 7567 UHD 4K display 15.6"
-MSI GL72 7RD 17.3" FHD
-Asus ROG GL753VD 17.3" FHD

I quite like the Dell (on-site warranty ) but it's the most expensive of all, and I am really not sure if I will appreciate the extra pixels.

One of my biggest doubts is on the quality of the FHD panel on both 17.3" model. If anyone has any experience on them, I will be glad to hear from you all.

Which of these will be my best pick?

Installing ElementaryOS (Linux), no partition

Hi all,

As titled. I have trouble installing ElementaryOS (or probably just any Linux system). So, I booted into GParted and this is the partition table I see.

QUOTE

/dev/sda1 (file system: fat16, flag: diag, some 39MB only)

/dev/sda2 (file system: ntfs, label: RECOVERY, flag: boot, some 12GB)

/dev/sda3 (file system: ntfs, label: OS, some 180GB)

/dev/sda4 (file system: extended, flag: lba, some 450GB)
/dev/sda5 (file system: ntfs, some 450GB<same as above>)

    unallocated (some 47GB)

I got in touch with Dell support, and they told me I can delete the recovery partition as I have upgraded from Windows 7 and Windows 8. It turns out to be a mini-heart attack as I cannot boot back to my OS. The boot information is apparently stored in the recovery partition. Anyhow, I manage to boot back as I repair it using the Windows installation media, but I still don't have an extra primary partition to install ElementaryOS (in the setup wizard, there's no partition for me to choose). Any advice will be greatly appreciated on getting my partition right, deleting the right partition or maybe just some tweak to get the installation going.

First Property - Advice needed

Hi all,

First time posting in this forum, so I believe I still have a lot to learn. I intend to acquire my first property but if you think now is not the time, please convince me.
I probably have a budget that maxes out around 500-600k and it seems that with that, I can only find a condominium some 15-20km away from KL city centre.

I am about to graduate and have already had an offer for an overseas attachment for 3 years (of which I will be paid, and thus be able to save up a bit). This purchase will be a joint purchase with my sister, so I don't think there will be much issue about loan either.

My intention is mainly for own stay upon me coming back by 2017/8, but definitely looking into prospect of investing as well - so that I can afford a better house (landed hopefully) in the future.
I haven't get in touch with any agents or developers and the price I am aware of is all from ads posting (so they may not reflect the most accurate price).

Here's what I have shortlisted.
Bukit Jalil (Bukit OUG enclave: Kiara Residence, Z Residence)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

PROS
-Good place to stay (been staying in BJ for a year, and like the connectivity it offers)
-Pavilion 2 (or whatever Malton wants to name it) is coming
-Upcoming link road from the enclave to the main BJ area
-LRT
-Almost ready

CONS
-Potential over-supply
-Might be over-crowded (traffic jam)
-What if there's no link road to the main BJ area?

Balakong area (Amerin Residence, Livia Residence @C180)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

PROS
-Cheap
-Driving distance to future MRT
-Driving distance to nearby malls
-Decent connectivity to KL

CONS
-Bangla area (For Amerin)
-Downstairs got retail, could be noisy (Livia Residence has pubs and bars downstairs!)

Here's my thoughts.
I don't know how speculative the price for those condos in BJ are. Will there be appreciation in the future or this price is here to stay for the next few years. Comparing BJ to other highly developed area like Ara Damansara (also soon to be connected by LRT), I think BJ is priced cheap. And, MEX is definitely a better highway to go to KL compared to Federal Highway.
Having been quite familiar in Balakong area, it definitely feels a bit lower class with nearby industrial area (and thus bangla area) but it is definitely cheaper than BJ and will there be appreciation with completion of MRT and the development going on in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn?

If these prices are here to stay, maybe I could wait longer and get into subsales in hunting down my first home.

Any daikor, sifu please advise and share your opinion. Thanks!

SKMM and Zitron/Avaxx Sticker at back

Hi all, I am really interested in getting a Lumia but got pretty put off by the fact that the distributor sticker and SKMM sticker will be pasted at the back of the device (instead of somewhere else as with the case of other non-removable backplate phone). I am against using a casing so I'll look to make my back clean - but that also mean my warranty will be void. Is there any workaround for this?

Thinking to get a Lumia 925

Hi all,

The Lumia 925 can be had for around RM1,435 as a new phone as that is indeed very attractive to me. I have had Lumia 710 for my mum so I know what I could expect from a WP devices generally but there are a few details that I need specific advices/information before my conversion.

1. I am a big Google service user, using Gmail, Drive, Youtube as well as Maps. I know Google is not being supportive in WP world, but will I need to switch myself to Outlook, SkyDrive and associated Microsoft services then? How easy/hard is it for me to stay with Google services?

2. How good is the HERE map/drive+ in Malaysia? I have been a Waze user and so far I have no major complaints about it but offline map is always handy whenever you want it.

3. While it's probably device specific, but how long is the shutter lag for most Windows devices (I believe 920 will perform closely to 925)? How long does it take to launch the camera app, and how long does it take to take successive shots?

4. For those who are familiar with RSS app in Android/iOS like Pulse, Flipboard and Feedly, is paid app like Nextgen reader providing a similar experience?

5. I believe the IE10 browser in WP devices is pretty decent but I read somewhere that background tab will be killed and be reloaded upon selecting. Is this phenomenon affecting the 1GB RAM devices? Or alternative apps like Surfcube is a good alternative to begin with?

Thanks in advance and please try hard to convert me. I have been a long admirer of the smoothness of the OS and how integrated all the core apps are. I also dig the Glance feature of 925 very very much (reminds me of the old days of N82) but at the same time, I am pretty entrenched to Android, with quite a number of paid apps as well as a Nexus 7 tablet. Any advice and information will be greatly appreciated.

WP devices Data Usage

Hi all, I just found out about the new mini-package by Maxis called Bites, basically it comes with either free FB and Twitter access or free Whatsapp access for RM10 per month. There's an additional complimentary 50MB data though. (There's also another plan that costs RM8/month for free access across all FB, Twitter and Whatsapp but that must be subscribed only by mobile internet users.)
http://new.maxis.com.my/content/maxis/en/p...lans/bites.html

My mum has been using her Lumia 710 for a year now and she's definitely a happy owner who has access to Facebook and Whatsapp (and recently Viber) via WiFi so far. I intend to subscribe (probably the FB one) and let her Whatsapp and Viber to eat up the remaining 50MB but I am unsure how much data WP pulls in the background. 50MB per month doesn't sound like a lot but I think it should still be doable for a light internet user like her? Any advice will be very much appreciated.

I am also aware about the data monitoring app Counter by Nokia but that will be tricky to track given that Maxis doesn't charge for any m.facebook.com surfing.

Cleaning bird shit completely

My 2-month-old car bonnet got bird shits today and I try to wipe it off using wet clothes. Then upon closer inspection, I find that they leave an 'invisible stain' that I can never remove. It's only visible under bright light at certain angles but that is very annoying to me. I believe it got dried up a lot on the bonnet and left a mark there. Bird shits on other part of the car can be removed without the 'invisible stain'. I am sure it will not do anything good for my car paint in the long run. How can I remove it?

I tried:
- car shampoo (turtle wax)
- dishwasher + water (dare not use pure dishwasher, or should I?)
- alcohol wipe (those used before injection that kind)

Or I'll need to polish that part again?

My story of car shopping (<90k)

This would be a long story but I find it useful to share my findings as comparisons between these cars will surely be around. While I am not someone who drives extremely well, but I think I have the ability to discern any obvious pros/cons of a car.

TLDR version:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I bought a car.

Why we need a car, who's using and what kind of car do we need?
I am a postgraduate student who get paid lowly and my dad is a senior engineer who's near his retirement. We need an extra car for the family (have to retire an old Opel). The extra car could either be a future retirement car for my dad <s>(which should doubles as a family car)</s> or a fuel-efficient car simply for my need to commute to my university. It could also well be a retirement car candidate where I would use it until I finish my studies, before passing it to my dad for his own retirement pleasure. FYI, I am the main driver of my family.

How much do we expect to pay?
Although a car like Ford Focus or Honda Civic would be a very perfect candidate for my dad's retirement, but it would not be appropriate for my use. Thus we are mostly looking at B-segment car (City, Vios etc.) or lower and somehow budget will hover around 90-100k max.

When to buy it?
Before the end of this year because there has been promotions going on for almost every car model except new car model.

Where?
Seremban is the place to buy the car, although the car is expected to go to KL often and it will need to make some long trip (of 400km one-way) like every 2-3 times per year.

======NISSAN======
The endeavour started off with a visit of the Nissan, with a keen interest on the Almera simply because of its affordability and the generous legroom it offers for rear seater. Almera has been rather quiet and the handling and acceleration has been okay, nothing to write home about. I test drove it on a road I travelled very frequently and it's raining on my test drive. Upon taking a turn with a rather big radius and decreasing slope, I found myself struggling for grip for my rear tyres which I must slow down to maintain a confidence level in negotiating the turn. That's a huge put-off for what has been a decent package - new Japanese car, attractive price, legroom space etc. While we were informed that we could fit a set of IMPUL-branded sports suspension (this will set us back another RM2,800) or simply take the whole set of body kit + the suspension for RM9,500 (I need to admit the IMPUL-fitted Almera makes it a very sexy car though for about 90k at max spec), we were not convinced as there's this Vios J that's at the similar price point with a proven record of rock-solid reliability. Naturally, our next stop is none other than Toyota.

=======TOYOTA========
While Vios is never a wrong purchase, it's a car with dated design and technology. In contrast, the Prius C boasts next-gen technology and call me a 'kampung boy' or whatever you like it, I am surprised with the silent start-up of the car. Even after I pedalled on the brake and push the start button (and the dashboard display starts some fancy bootscreen stuff etc.), I am not convinced the car has been started. A switch of gear and push on the throttle though, the car starts moving. The road tested is rather straight but the road is like moon with craters everywhere. I think this puts the Prius C into a very harsh test for its ride comfort and sound insulation and sadly to report, I am not convinced that the price tag reflects what it can do. On sound insulation and ride comfort alone, the vote goes to the almost 20k cheaper Almera - not to mention the loss of legroom and boot space. And probably to each his need, this Prius C is an ugly car and the most beautiful exterior will be its Toyota logo! We were quoted a 5k discount and that puts Prius C to 92k, a very good purchase. On the other hand, while we didn't get the chance to test drive a Vios, we were quoted 82k for its G spec as well - quite a good deal as well. Without being able to make up our mind, we decide to check out Honda as well. These two brands always go together when buying a car!

======HONDA========
Upon reaching the Honda showroom, we were astonished with the discount we receive for the Insight - 11k and that puts Insight right in the City price bracket of 88k. Fortunately, City does receive some discount at 85k while the CBU Jazz Hybrid is also trying to woo buyers with the identical price tag as Insight of 88k. We test drove the City this time round. It's a rather flat car, nothing to be surprised of, nothing to be complained about either - just a consumer-grade sedan that will not earn much complaints but some praises for its track record and overall package. It's like Vios, a purchase that's never wrong - a benchmark when you want to buy a car at this price point. Nonetheless, what's so captivating is the discount on Insight - it's a freaking 10% off! The only bad thing about Insight is <insert all the doubts for hybrid car> and the uncomfortable rear seats. Insight will not serve our needs -it is too premium to use as a car for my daily commute and it's not a car that could ferry a family here and there. No matter how attractive the price tag is, it is not the purchase that slots in well into our need.

======MITSUBISHI========
If our purchase will want to keep the budget as low as possible, there's a need to explore the 60k price bracket - where the Mitsubishi Mirage plays in. As a C&C Red Alert fan, the name of Mirage is simply too hard to make a pass because Mirage Tank is just such an awesome unit for the Allied. Okay, back to topic, Mirage is going without discount, which is at about 65k for full-spec with push-start, keyless, digital air-con control etc. On paper, this sounds like a great deal as the other Japanese car you can get in this bracket would be the Suzuki Swift (which is not in our consideration for a lack of presence in Seremban). Of course, looking at car of this price range will put the purchase into a purchase of a car for my commute, instead of a retirement candidate for my dad. The exterior looks nice and the legroom is quite good for this size of car but the impression quickly approaches the other end as I sat in the car and test drove it. The unit I test drove clocks about 70km of mileage before my testing and I can't say if the car is still in the phase of breaking in or it's simply as it was. The car feels underpowered and it takes a lot of efforts to climb up the hill. Handling is okay but interior feels like a car made to a budget (which is not a cons, because it's indeed a car made to a budget), and expectedly the noise insulation as well. It makes me a lot more curious to explore the other candidates, namely the Myvi 1.5 and Hyundai i10.

=======PERODUA==========
Maybe what's selling like a hot cake is indeed a good car, and a choice of so many people will not go wrong. I can't say the same for my experience though. I test drove the Myvi Extreme (which I believe is the same as the 1.5 SE - the variant I am interested in) and have been very disappointed about everything except the power. While it does accelerates much better than the Mirage, it's also noisier. What's worst is its handling where it's like a beast that will go out of my control one day. I can't drive with confidence at 120km/h and I can't negotiate a turn confidently unless I go with a low speed. The route I took is almost the same as the Honda and Mitsubishi as they are located close to each other. It's certainly the worst in term of handling among all. To me, I can't imagine I still need to risk my life even if I already have to pay about 50-60k (depending on model). With my limited knowledge on car, I would say it's an inherited problem of the car shape where the car simply couldn't get enough downforce via aerodynamics to stabilise the car at its rear (just my theory, correct me if I am wrong). It's to be noted that the test drove unit I have has tyres with low pressure (the deflation could be spotted easily via naked eyes) but I suspect that should affect more on the acceleration (as the tyre gets more sluggish) and the effect of downforce would remain unchanged. A big cross on Perodua (already made a big cross on Proton before the car shopping) - feel disappointed about our national car. There's a discount of 1.5k for all(?) models, and the SA manages to give me 2k for the 1.5 SE.

=======FORD=========
While the HYUNDAI i10 is the last candidate on paper (of which a disappointment would put the purchase into a stallmate), somehow, we test drove the Ford Fiesta (Hatchback) first. (Hyundai and Ford showroom are just next to each other). Absolutely impressive - while the steering is a bit too light to my preference, the handling and sound insulation is simply top-notch. While I expect the gauge to show at around 60km/h while I first looked at the speedometer, the gauge clearly shows an 80km/h and still climbing. And the whole car remain stable, quiet and easy to drive even at 120km/h. This performance blows my mind away because it would put a serious threat on the benchmark we have - the Honda City. The SA really tried to make our choice simpler by offering a cash rebate of 8k + 3-years of free service (that's standard for all Ford models) (and that puts the Fiesta Sedan to be around 75k). Looking at the Fiesta Sedan (which we believe to have almost identical performance with the Hatchback version), it will be a nice car for me to commute and good enough for my dad as a retirement and family car. But the same SA also tried to make our decision tougher by giving a very good deal on the i10 as well (apparently the Hyundai and Ford in Seremban are owned by the same boss).

======HYUNDAI=========
For the 56k model, we get 6k off, making it a 50k deal. What's making the decision tougher is my test driving experience though. I expect myself to complain a lot about i10, because I just finished an impressive run with the Fiesta but to my surprise, I am impressed with what i10 offers, especially at that price point. The handling is very good and making turn is much much easier and comfortable than Myvi. Acceleration is okay for its engine size (1.25L) and is certainly a noticeable improvement over the 1.2L Mirage. I really like the handling very much and it feels absolutely natural for me (I figured out later that it's probably because the steering has a very similar weighting to the car I drive daily now - my dad's Ford Escape). The only thing that I will put a minus mark on is a relatively loud humming sound when the car approaches over 100km/h (I am not sure if it's caused by the engine or the transmission before it changes into the final 4th gear). However, the performance advantage it has over Myvi is huge - I didn't expect it to be so easy to handle compared to Myvi and the loss of some legroom and boot space doesn't concern me as it will be a car for one-person (or two-person max) commute. Of course, internally, there's no way to deny it feels like a car made to a budget. And did I tell you it's a joy to drive around with a petite car like that - and I still feel safe for its NCAP 4 star rating and stable handling throughout. And as petite as its total size could be, I did not feel cramped at all - but I can't say for the same for side drivers or rear passengers. To me, for all the arguments between i10 and Myvi (and Mirage as well), if you don't need the extra size of Myvi/Mirage and will use the car for more than 5 years (in other words, you don't care about resale value), i10 is definitely the better buy!

And so, what's our decision? For 75k, we get Ford Fiesta, a car with the best handling, acceleration and noise insulation (and the most airbags (7) for the sedan variant) among all tested. This is almost perfect for my dad's and more than enough for my need. The 50k i10 screams "buy me buy me" because it really fits my need well but it's never suitable for my dad. The difference is 25k, half the price of i10, and it could be well used for house renovation or simply save up for a Ford Focus or Honda Civic when my dad really wants to pay that much of a car for himself. Well, in the end, we go with a silver Ford Fiesta Sedan, worthy enough as a replacement car of the current Ford Escape for the family, and more than enough for my commute need. I highly recommend anyone who's in the shopping of a car below 90k to have a look at Fiesta though. While the initial 5k difference with Honda City makes it slightly more difficult to recommend (due to resale value), after factoring the discount, I think it's just hard to pass on it. And for the features and praises won all over the world, I think Fiesta gave Mazda 2 and Peugoet 207 a hard time selling.

UPDATE1: The car is here, it's in the showroom now, waiting to go to PUSPAKOM, JPJ and whatever all those official stuff. Seems like can get car within another week!

UPDATE2: This should come earlier. As of 27/12/12, the Fiesta Sedan is officially a member of the family.
Also, some of the forumers question about the omission for not checking out some of the C-segment cars, namely the Forte and Elantra. After I have some chats with dad, apparently he's more leaning towards getting a smaller car for general commute rather than a family car. We still have a Ford Escape (which is a SUV if you wonder) that retains its position as a family car. So I guess the new addition of Fiesta Sedan will make quite a good combo as well where I foresee Fiesta to dominate short-distance travel sessions (<2 hours) while the Escape to handle the long long travel (like to Penang, which occurs at least twice per year for my family).

My car photo:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

And allow me to end this thread with this wonderful video by TopGear on Ford Fiesta.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

http://youtu.be/7e7R3y-qwZ0

Complain against Paul_frank

Forumer you are complaining against: Paul_frank

Item being sold/bought: Fujitsu Adapter (RM160+postage RM8)

Original thread link: Cannot find back.

Date of transaction: 8/8/2012 (detailed timeline below)

Details of the complaint :
TLDR:
Seller (Paul_frank) posted wrong item (different current rating), and I sent back. Seller claimed item spoiled, refuse to refund. Agreed to send that adapter for warranty claim - and *seems like* the warranty claim is successful, yet no refund yet.
EDIT4: We both believe it's an issue on Maybank, but we'll see.

Moral of the story:
EDIT8: It's convenient to browse items online, but take the effort to do COD (in a safe place of course) and check item properly to avoid woes in after sales service - a section that I think a lot of local companies need to work harder on (ASUS, did you hear me? LOL!). By after sales service, I do mean matters like return/refund policy (my case below), warranty (especially against individual seller, AP companies or companies with poor track record etc.) and technical/customer supports etc.

Detailed timeline:
26/7: Seller responded to my PM after my inquiry on product (Fujitsu adapter).
7/8: I responded asking for best price and provided this link to ask if it's the same. Seller replied "Yes as per website". During exchange of information (bank account, name etc.) I repeatedly asking to confirm for the same model and power rating and seller did not say it's different.
8/8: SMS seller that I have banked in on the same day. Seller claimed delay on posting out due to stock problem.
9/8: Sent a picture via MMS to show me the picture. I can spot it's different from the one I want, but seller did not say the the current rating is different and the item was posted.
14/8: Due to delay on delivery, I requested for proof of delivery.
17/8: Received item, found out current rating is wrong. Tried it once to see if it works, but decide to refund because it's simply the wrong item!
18/8: Decide to send back item and request for refund via PM (after no reply via SMS).
23/8: Seller asked to post next week because he was at overseas.
27/8: Seller gave address (see below) to post to.
28/8: Posted out via Skynet.
7/9: Seller did not receive the parcel although I have tracked that Skynet attempts delivery several times. Seller did receive items after some time. (Misplaced the Skynet tracking number do no concrete date to report, but I could recall the seller received the item like after another week).
29/9: Asked seller about any update for the refund, NO REPLY.
8/10: Asked seller about any update for the refund and threatened to report police. Seller called and said the adapter is spoilt and they will not give any refund. Seller also asked me to go to their company to see the adapter is really rosak already. (Company detail below). During these time, I suggested to send the adapter for warranty claim to supplier, so that I can get back my refund, he can get back his working adapter. I requested informally for opinions in serious kopitiam before. Seller also promised to get back to me after ONE week.
23/10: (Two weeks later if you lost track), asked for update and seller say no update from supplier side. I am pretty pissed and request to speak to his immediate superior (detail below). Talked to immediate superior and he promised to get it settled fast, asked for my account number also.
EDIT4: 30/10 - the date the immediate superior claimed to have transferred the money.
29/11: (Yes, a month plus later), I asked for update which he replied "already done" and have refunded me back on 28/10. I did not receive any payment and I requested for proof of transaction. This guy asked for my email so that he can send the proof of transaction and NO NEWS till today.
13/12: <s>Tried calling several times but no one picked up the phone.</s> (EDIT: Notified about the seller about this thread) EDIT3: Got in contact with this M and finally show proof of transaction on 30th Oct 2012. I tried to confirm with Maybank and there's no transaction into my account on that day. Shown proof to M that I didn't receive any money either. He promised to get it sorted out tomorrow by visiting Maybank and have it resolved. We'll see until tomorrow.
EDIT6: 14/12: Seller proceeded to Maybank and claim that it's "my account problem" that prevents the transaction and will attempt transaction again later (as of writing, 12:55PM). Let's see.
EDIT8: I asked Maybank and I was told I could do nothing, everything is up to the seller to do his job now.
EDIT9: At long last, the RM168 is back to me. Case closed.

EDIT2:
Personally, I feel this guy is very irresponsible (EDIT3: and unprofessional) about the product and service they provide. Not only that they did not inform beforehand about the difference in rating, they are very reluctant to inform customers about the updates - be it about receiving the returned parcel, finding out the adapter to be faulty, update from supplier about warranty claim, and refunding money. While I can't expect too much of a warm service, but at least a notification in the form of SMS would be obligatory. I have my own judgment about the creditability about the seller and his company, and but of course, to each his need, you could hold other thought. You may see me as a biased person since I am the victim, but the information here is provided for any future traders and customers for their own reference. If any of you wish to challenge the information provided, I could provide screenshots from my phone and computer for every incidents that are recorded via PM and SMS. Too bad I did not have any recorded phone calls.(EDIT4: bold certain texts)

EDIT5:
<s>After giving some consideration, I am responding to the company's request in an effort to protect their staff personal information. I am making some censorship in a way such that it's still effective to serve as a reference about the individual involved in this matter while their personal information will not be leaked further. In any future action, unless someone presents me (via PM or any other contact method) the relevant individual in his/her full name or full contact number to ask for confirmation before making a trade with the involved individual, I will not expose their identities.</s>

EDIT7:
(removed all information about seller since seller wants to settle nicely.)

Seller refuse to refund, say item spoiled

Hi all, need some of your advice as I made my purchase in the same forum. Thought of posting in the TradeZone Helpdesk but figure that maybe I can get some advice here first.

Story:
I want to purchase a laptop adapter and contact the seller, with information including voltage, current rating and model number (and even link to sample pictures from those China bulk selling site).
Paid, the seller shipped one with wrong current rating (I do understand that the current rating may not matter so much, but that's NOT what I order!).
I did try to see if it works, and it does show as charging but I just don't think I should accept it.
Contacted seller and seller asked to send back for checking.
Shipped back to seller and NO UPDATE from seller at all (while I did try to ask for any updates in between!).
After about 2 months, I decide to inform the seller that I try to escalate the case, only to get a response.
Seller say the unit is faulty, and asked me to go to his company to have a look.
And then me typing here now asking for advice on what I should do - whether to go to his company or not.

My POV:
Why should I waste my time and petrol to go to their company when I am the victim!
And why did it take so long for him to get me losing my patience to contact him?

Any advice?

UPDATE: Seller will try to claim from supplier, and once claim, will return full amount to me. Let's see how it goes. ETA, next Tues 16/10.

Multimedia Powerhouse vs Road Warrior

Hi all,

I need advice on picking either types of notebooks:
1. Multimedia powerhouse - 15.6" FHD for best viewing experience, extra size can also allow higher specced system but sacrifice portability and battery life
2. Road warrior - 13.3" or smaller notebooks that have long battery life and extreme portability for better productivity

Purpose:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I will be starting my postgraduate soon and this is of course for productivity purposes. But I have a habit watching movies and dramas from my own laptop. If I get a 15.6", I may look for a tablet (Nexus 7?) to make up for the portability. If I get a small-sized laptop, I'll invest in a good docking solution and that may mean I can have a very good theatre experience - but lose the immersion feel when watching on bed. Have spent 4 years on a laptop without graphic card so may not enjoy gaming as much as I thought I may - that said, Intel's integrated graphic might suffice.

Here's the two models currently in my top list and a few runners-up for both types

Multimedia powerhouse: Dell Vostro 3560 (15.6" FHD matte, i7-3612M, 8GB RAM, Radoen 7670M 1GB DDR3, 32GB mSATA + 750GB HDD)
Appear to be the best in term of build quality/workmanship among other considerations (see below) (also slightly thinner and lighter). Potentially poor speakers (but can be made up with good headphones), not a lot of reviews to read on and chances to try one out before buy is close to nil. A red colour of 3560 would be soooo nice!

Road warrior: Lenovo ThinkPad X230 (12.5" IPS 1366 x 768, i5-3210M, 4GB RAM, integrated graphics, 32GB mSATA + 320GB HDD)
I am a strong believer where portability is defined by length and width more than height and X230 offers the best keyboard and docking solution over competitors. Also, it has a full-powered processors and has self upgrading freedom. No doubt about its build quality.

Runners-up:
Multimedia powerhouse (generally all have quad core, FHD screen)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Dell Inspiron 15R SE - susceptible build quality (seen one in person), rumoured to have issues with FHD model
Asus N56VZ - no mSATA out of the box, personally dislike their customer service, dislike numpad as it shifts away the keyboard to the left
Lenovo Y580 - no mSATA out of the box, dislike numpad as it shifts away the keyboard to the left, glossy screen although not too big an issue
All these also come thicker and heavier and wouldn't be as sexy as a red laptop. All these have better speakers and graphic cards.

Road warrior:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Dell XPS 13 - very nice design, nice keyboard but highly glossy screen, runs Sandy Bridge, expensive warranty upgrade
ASUS Zenbook Prime - very nice 1080p IPS, keyboard/trackpad not as comfortable, no complete docking but monitor out solution only, dislike customer service, no future upgrades can be done
HP Envy 14 Spectre - 14" 900p IPS (size in between both - maybe solve the dilemmas or worse still caught in between?), nice glass design with NFC, expensive warranty upgrade (RM500) to 3 years, no complete docking solution
MacBook Air - nice display, good keyboard/trackpad, no docking, runs Mac OS (and may face software compatibility issue), expensive warranty, personally an android guy, no docking solution - Thunderbolt peripherals very expensive
MacBook Pro 13" - see above, but have a lower resolution display in exchange of better keyboard, no SSD
Dell XPS 14 - heavy, 2.1kg could have run full-powered processors instead of low-voltage variants, expensive warranty upgrade
There are a lot more ultrabooks that I have considered but crossed out either due to poor display (Lenovo) or bad keyboards (Toshiba, Fujitsu) or other factors

Last but not least, budget

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

RM4,000 MAX for laptop+warranty

Any advice?

Index
-Introduction
-Pictures
-Why study here
-Academics - Courses offered (undergraduate & postgraduate)
-Entry requirements
-Scholarships & Fees
-Accommodation
-Extras
-Members
-Facebook Group
-Previous threads

Introduction
Unofficially, we gather here to provide you with all sorts of informations you want about University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus.
It's for current students, for future students, and, by all mean, for ex-students as well!

Pictures

Why study here
- We learn under authentic UK education, using the course structures, course materials and same papers for some of the modules same as our sister campus in UK. This leads us to identical degrees with our friends in the UK campus - you get the same Vice-Chancellor signature!

- We are regarded as one of the best universities in Malaysia (SETARA, 09) and consistently highly regarded by several rankings in UK. Of course, we also perform well on international rankings, ranking in top 100 for QS ranking and ARWU Ranking.

- A lot of our courses are accredited not only by professional bodies in Malaysia, but also those from UK.

- Get a chance to study in the UK and China but pay the local fee here. We get the chance to be exchanged to our sister campuses but remain paying the same amount of what we pay here. That means, you have the chance to pay about RM30,000 p.a. instead of 13,000GBP for studies in UK. You get a chance to experience studies and cultures of China, yet at the same time extends your business networks in the fast-growing nation of China. Duration of exchange programme varies from one semester to one year, depending on the offering schools in UK/China. Link

- We offer a wide range of courses, from Engineering to Economics, Psychology to Pharmacy, Management to MBA and more!

- One of the nicest campuses (I say la..) in Malaysia, being green, spacious, tranquil and the ornamental ducks on our lake!

- Awesome facilities - Computers equipped with Windows 7 with lots of specialised softwares (Pro|E, AutoCAD, MATLAB, HYSYS etc.) and personally, I have yet to kena a virus after plugging and unplugging my pendrive so many times! Renting a room, whether on campus or anywhere within the vicinity of the campus is AS costly as those you can scour in KL and Peejay, and be adequately warned that the level of comfort you expect to derive from these rooms may not correspond to the amount of rental you fork out.

The general rule of thumb is the farther away, the cheaper, so those who have their personal modes of transportation may wanna check out potential rooms or houses not too near to the university.

But since I am staying on campus, I can't really speak for those who live outside since I lack credibility.

Prices range from 350 to 600 plus on campus, in which your choice of whether to you'd like to have an en suite bathroom/A/C (or both) in your room or not will be duly incorporated into your rental. However, if you opt for an A/C, bear in mind that they charge you separately the electricity costs you incur during its usage. A single shared bathroom unit off campus (but under that of the PK and PC, which also brings us to the fact that accommodation here is privatized) is about RM 30 more a ripoff than its similar counterpart on campus.

One way of looking at this is that all the cruel holes the rental burns in your fee raped pocket, convenience and safety compensates on campus residents somewhat, and the importance of this privilege is arguably only felt when students are forced to move out a year later. So its not that bad, really! Expensive rental notwithstanding, living within walking proximity of certain facilities (depending on where your priorities lie, ie, the library and the 24 hour study rooms for me) may be a major strategic interest to nightowls and late risers who are never bright and early for the daily races.

So basically, while the price may appear unreasonable to some, the location does levy its share of benefits.

And oh yeah, they are quite particular with punctuality; they expect you to indemnify administrative delays so make sure you surrender your cash on time! Hahahaha!
And oh yeah, the accommodation offices expect you, with reasonable integrity ( ), to declare all personal electrical appliances such as electric kettles, mini bars, portable stand fans, rice cookers, toasters and whatnot so that they can charge you accordingly! And these rates are really not light.
They can only charge you if you declare lol. Never mind, I am here to explain. (Hopefully V4 is coming soon, and please, get this question to the first page!)

BEng and MEng are both undergraduate degree, meaning your first degree after your Pre-U.
The difference between BEng and MEng, other than the year it spends, is the possibility of getting accredited.
Today, to become a professional engineer (bearing the title Ir. or CEng or PEng depending on where you get accredited), you must study for 4 years during your tertiary studies. If you do not possess a 4-year degree, you will have to continue further study, or sit for their exams, so that you are qualified to work towards of becoming a professional engineer.

A little bit of history. BEng is always a 3-year course in UK education, as compared to 4 years in other countries. This is because UK education is rather concentrated, studying the core elements and do not waste time on the unrelated contents. Due to this nature, they are able to concentrate the course into 3 years. But the problem comes when everyone else in the world says, they will only accredit those degrees which are only of 4 years in length. To counter that, UK decides to come up with a 4-year MEng, instead of elongating their BEng into 4 years. The extra year, essentially teaches you more stuff, and also prepares you better to join the industry.

You may now wonder then, is our MEng the same as those Aus BEng? The answer is, NO, except when it comes to getting accreditation. A quick proof would be comparing the course structure side by side. You will find that, while Aus students still study Physics and Chemistry in their first semester/year, UK is already delivering the core contents of the respective course. For instance, for Mechanical, instead of just studying Physics, you already start off with Thermofluids and Solid Mechanics. Why? Because A-Level delivers more contents than SAM/AUSMAT/HSC, so they can just start with more advanced topics already.

Regarding further study, you may be surprised that, even a 3-year BEng could earn you a PhD seat in a UK university. This holds true within UK but not so true to the rest of world. Often the time, a lot of universities will clarify that a 4-year degree is required before one can start his/her Master/PhD, so a mere 3-year BEng will simply be insufficient to apply successfully. Harvard, for instance, actually states that one needs to do 6 years before they can start a PhD there. The specification of 6-years, means that even if you are a Master, you do not yet have the qualification to do it.

As for why you need accreditation, it really depends. If you are from Civil, go and get your MEng and practise in getting the Ir. title. It's vital for the Civil sector. As for the other main streams (Mech, Chem, EE), it is not that important in Malaysia. This is because, Boards of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) has yet to be so strict on the accreditation stuff that only accredited engineers can do the jobs. Intel hires BEng, for example. And with such phenomena happening, it makes the BEng a great course to sell, as it still promises jobs (as long as you get a good class) while it comes cheaper and faster than others. The drawback is the not-so-important (for now) accreditation thingy in Malaysia. Oh, one more thing, it is not uncommon to do the route of BEng, followed by a more specialised MSc (Master of Science, a postgraduate degree in UK). For instance, a BEng in Mechanical Engineering and later a MSc in Aerodynamics.

Of course, I may be biased, although I try to be as neutral as possible by supplying evidence for my claim.

Pin this.
Suitable Brand, Class and Size for A2SD+

Hi all,

I am looking for a good quality microSD card that can handle A2SD+ well. (LeeDrOiD 2.3d on Desire)

Certainly, I know Class 10 is the best, but is it worth the difference from Class 6?

I have read somewhere that if your size is too big, your A2SD+ performance will suffer as well. Is 8GB a good size or I can go up to 16GB safely.

Other than that, which is the most recommended brand? It must be able to withstand the stress due to the A2SD+ and if really fail, would fail within warranty. Of course, it cannot be too expensive. Any ideas?

[WTA] Compiler for C for Linux, double precision

Hi all,

I am a mechanical engineering student and am trying to write C codes to be run under Linux environment and also for double precision. Can anyone tell me a suitable compiler and its respective editor for that application? The codes will be written on Windows.

I was previously using Code Blocks and their default compiler (GNU thingy?). Can't seem to find how to make it to be compile for double precision and unsure if my code will be executed smoothly on Linux or not. Thus, I try to ask here.

Please pardon my brevity and also the use of some terms (hopefully I get my message over).
Thanks in advance.

p/s: If possible, will love an editor that is a bit more colourful, easier to see through the codes.
