UiTM debaters Asian British Parliamentary champs

PETALING JAYA: Debaters from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) have made the nation proud again by winning the Asian British Parliamentary Debating Championship, the second most prestigious debate competition in Asia.

Third-year law students Mohd Mifzal Mohd Murshid Kieron, 21, and Rafiq Saladdin Omar Salahuddin, 22, were named champions after defeating Nanyang Technology University from Singapore, Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Dhaka from Bangladesh and another UiTM team in the four-way grand finals.

This is the second time a Malaysian team has clinched the title since the tournament began in 2009, when it was won by the Multimedia University (MMU).

For the icing on the cake, Mohd Mifzal was also awarded best overall speaker of the competition while Rafiq was named best speaker of the finals.

“We’re really happy about the win. It is very empowering as we head for the World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) at the end of this year.

“It was also very encouraging to have two teams in the finals and know that our chances for winning had increased,” said Mifzal, who explained that the tournament had been difficult and challenging but also stimulating at the same time.

UiTM has been at the finals of the ABP for four consecutive years so the win was an especially welcome one, added Mifzal.

Both the third-year law students faced six preliminary rounds and four knockout rounds become coming home with the coveted trophy.

The tournament ran from Oct 2 to Oct 9 and was hosted by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UniMas), Kuching. The 8-day competition drew in 76 teams from 22 countries across Asia.

In June, UiTM debater Maizura Mokhsein, 23, also created history by being the first Malaysian debater to be ranked 1st in Asia.

UiTM will be hosting the WUDC, the biggest debate tournament in the world in December this year.

Beijing: Sebuah tandas mewah ala Jepun atau “washlet” yang dibeli satu keluarga di Dongguan, wilayah Guangdong meletup baru-baru ini.

Akhbar Southern Metro Daily semalam melaporkan, keluarga Liu bernasib baik kerana tiada di rumah ketika kejadian berlaku.

Mereka yang pulang kira-kira jam 9 malam mendapati pangsapuri mereka mempunyai kesan abu dan bau terbakar yang datang dari arah bilik air.

“Saya membuka pintu dan dalam rumah diselubungi asap hitam dengan bau plastik terbakar. “Saya berundur kerana tidak tahan dengan bau hangit itu,” kata isteri Liu. Bilik air di kediamannya rosak teruk dengan dipenuhi jelaga dan sisa tandas yang meletup itu.

Polis menganggarkan tandas elektronik itu meletup antara jam 6 petang hingga 9 malam. Keluarga itu juga bernasib baik kerana letupan menyebabkan paip air bocor dan secara tidak langsung memadamkan api sebelum ia sempat marak.

Siasatan awal mendapati kerugian dialami keluarga itu akibat letupan tandas itu ialah 300,000 yuan (RM161,881). Syarikat Dongpeng yang mengeluarkan tandas itu mendakwa model dimiliki keluarga Liu tidak lagi dikeluarkan.

Man runs amok and kills ex-wife with parang

The suspect who ran amok and brutally attacked a family with a parang being given first aid after he was overpowered by firemen and neighbours.

UNG Siew Lin eked out a living predicting the future. She, however, had no premonition that she would die a tragic death, or that her children would also be attacked, by a man who ran amok at her house in Taman Saga here early yesterday.

Ung, 46, succumbed to multiple slash wounds on the head, abdomen and arms in the 12.30am incident. The 50-year-old suspect had earlier entered her house through the back door.

When one of Ung's four children realised the presence of the parang-wielding suspect, all of them made a dash for the front door.

The suspect, however, cornered Ung in the car porch and attacked her. He then turned his attention on her children.

Ung's adopted daughter, Ch'ng Sheve Mei, 26, is in critical condition with slash wounds on the head, face and hands at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital.

Another daughter, Wong Chew Ying, also 26, is warded at the hospital with slash wounds on both hands. She also suffered a broken left hand.

Ung's two other girls, Chew Sen, 22, and Chew Wei, 21, were unhurt after they managed to escape by jumping over the front gate.

Several of Ung's neighbours, awakened by the commotion and cries for help from her daughters, rushed to her aid.

Several firemen, who had earlier arrived at the housing estate on receiving a distress call, came to Ung's aid and hosed the suspect down. He was then overpowered and handed over to the police. A blood-stained parang was found at the scene.

State CID chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zakaria Ahmad said the suspect, known to Ung and her daughters, had earlier stood outside the house and demanded that they let him in.

When his demands were ignored, the suspect set fire to Ung's car which was parked in the porch.

The suspect then ran to the back and broke down the kitchen door before entering the house.

Zakaria said the suspect, who suffered minor injuries, was under heavy police guard at the same hospital.

“Ung yang cedera parah ditetak di kepala, perut dan lengan berjaya diselamatkan orang ramai awam yang menyedari kejadian itu, tetapi meninggal dunia ketika dalam perjalanan ke Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB).

“Anak angkatnya yang turut cedera ditetak oleh suspek, dihantar ke hospital oleh jiran dan keadaannya kini kritikal di Unit Rawatan Rapi (ICU) hospital berkenaan,” katanya ketika dihubungi, semalam.

Mohd Zakaria berkata, ketiga-tiga anak kandung mangsa yang cedera, dihantar ke hospital sama untuk rawatan.

Beliau berkata, berdasarkan siasatan awal, pihaknya percaya kes itu bermotifkan masalah keluarga kerana suspek dikatakan sering datang ke rumah bekas isterinya sejak tiga tahun lalu.

“Suspek ditahan hasil bantuan jiran mangsa sebelum dihantar ke HSB untuk rawatan kerana lelaki itu juga cedera ketika pergelutan dengan mangsa,” katanya.

Menurutnya, polis mengklasifikasikan kes itu sebagai bunuh dan siasatan dilakukan mengikut Seksyen 302 Kanun Keseksaan.
