US VISA application process - help

Hi guys, I am a Malaysian working in Singapore. I will be going to the US with my gf this June.

As my gf doesn't speak English well, I am planning to go back to Malaysia to do the interview with her together. I want to ask, after a successful interview, do we hand in our passport for them for a few days? I'm asking because I am concerned that I cannot fly back to Singapore to work if this is the case.
