Cataract Surgery: Ultrasound NOT Laser

This is for information purposes.

All this while, patients will be asking what type of cataract surgery will they be getting.
Will u use LASER?
What type of LASER?
U don need to cut open my eye, rite?

As to now, the latest cataract surgery uses phacoemulsification i.e ULTRASOUND energy to "melt" the cataract. NOT laser.

The misunderstanding arises, i guess due to the popularity of LASIK surgery to correct refractive errors. LASIK surgery is NOT for cataract. It's to correct short or long sightedness.

Some facts about modern cataract surgery:
a) Still need a small incision into the eyeball to put the ultrasound probe INTO the eyeball (to "melt" the lens/ cataract)

b) Since we remove the cataractous lens, we need to replace the lens with an artificial lens (intra-ocular lens)

c) It's a SURGERY, so complications may happens. From minor complication like astigmatism (rabun silau), to major sight threatening complications like infection (which may lead to blindness)

d) Cataract surgery only solves the CATARACT problem so if ur retina is diseased or unhealthy, ur vision gain may not be optimum. A simple analogy will be a camera system. If ur camera's lens (cataract) is damaged, we can replace it. However if the camera sensor (retina) is damaged also, whatever high end lens u replace will NOT help.

e) Some time if the cataract surgery is complicated, we may need to "CONVERT". This means the doctor cannot proceed with PHACO surgery and will extend the corneal wound to take out the cataract manually. This is to SAFELY complete the surgery. Due to the larger wound, sutures will be needed.

Video of phaco surgery:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtOY_n_0oaM

Video of ECCE surgery (with sutures):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9XVmreyb_Y

Last but not least, a new LASER system for cataract surgery had been approved by FDA. So in another few years time, we may actually be doing LASER cataract surgery. Hope this day will come soon...

Permata Hijrah. Can cure all eye diseases

Just for ur info:

Recently lots of patients asked regarding this drug/ supplements called Permata Hijrah.
I'm not promoting anything. Just an advice from a medical personnel. We don't want to see more and more patients blinded from this useless product.

The company claimed their supplement can cure "cataract, glaucoma, optic nerve problems, retinitis pigmentosa, poor eye sight due to diabetes, astig etc etc"

There is NO CURE for cataract besides operation. NO Drops, NO prayer, NO f*** will help besides surgery.
There is NO CURE for glaucoma. Only certain anti-glaucoma that will stop/ delay the progression of glaucoma. Ppl had spent years and years with billions of money finding cure for this disease.
And do u believe 2 TABIB from Kelantan can cure this disease???
There is NO CURE for retinitis pigmentosa SO FAR. It is an inherited disease. U can spend all ur money on whatever products u came across. Nothing will cure retinitis pigmentosa. We can only help with visual aids.

I just hope one day, the 2 tabib will get one of the eye diseases and come to see us.
What i'll say is " why don u use PERMATA HIJRAH" to cure ur disease?? U can use it all day long 24/7. Please shoved it up ur ******* also to see if it works"

Please beware that as far as scientific medical knowledge with billions USD of research, all this alkaline water, prayed water, bilberry extract WILL NOT solved the eye probs mentioned.

What it will do is what we called "placebo effect". U will feel psychologically better. But in actual fact, ur disease is still progressing and the PERMATA HIJRAH medication/ supplement may even harm ur eye.

What we do not want is patients conned into using the PERMATA HIJRAH supplement and when they decided that the stuffs doesn't work, then they come back to the hospital. What happened then is the damage is beyond salvage.

For example: Patient A was planned for laser photocoagulation for his diabetic retinopathy. He was told tat the PERMATA HIJRAH will cure his diabetic retinopathy. SO he decided to give it a try. After 2 months, he came back with advanced changes. Whatever we did, we can't save his sight. HE WILL BE BLIND FOREVER.

I'm not against patient spending money on some supplements that may help. BUT definitely not all this nonsense.

This is their website and i believe lots and lots of our patients are actually using it.

http://permatahijrah.com/index.php?option=...w&id=5&Itemid=6
