lappie hangs on boot up

Recently bought a new Toshiba L300
and install Windows Xp on it under compatibility mode then updated to sp3
now it randomly hangs when booting up usually after the boot screen
and the hard disk led also stops blinking
any ideas?
Help appreciated thx..
