Can graphic designer make big money?

I am secondary school fresh graduate and is at the watershed of choosing between business study and graphic design.
The main thing is money.
In the world of business, there's a lot of great investors, banker, salesman, contractor, business magnate that earns a lot of money.
But seriously, how many graphic desinger rich?

By the way, I had chose to study visual communication major in graphic design, and was quite worrying about my future. I would say if it's not the matter of money, I won't hesitate these much.

I am a bit lost between my passion for art and reality. Do I have to compromise?

I have this thought in my mind is because recently I read the article below:

"Seriously, how many are out there? Bill Gates is the world's richest computer programmer, and there are scads of fabulously wealthy computer people of one kind or another. But can you name one rich designer? The closest ones that leap to mind are Michael Graves or Jonathan Ive, but they're both product designers. That seems like cheating.

Why is it that designers can't be the rich guys? I think it's because we're almost always the add-on to a product or a service. An engineer, programmer, businessperson or scientist creates the product. The designer is brought in later to make improvements. They may be vital to the success of the product, but they don't own it. They're hired hands.

We live in an internet world where any fool can draw something up, send it off to Hong Kong, and have products sitting on the shelves at Wal-Mart without leaving their basement. This has been done by some artists and designers, but I think we need to get into it in a much bigger way. Every designer should have their own toy line, chairs, custom computer cases, clothes line, whatever.

Designers need to be the ones that create the product. We should be the ones that hire other people to make it work. We like to tell ourselves we're so much more creative and insightful than the rest of the world, but what do we do about it? Nothing. We're content to be the hired hands that make someone else's idea great.

And that's why there are no rich designers."

If I were to create the product instead of designing graphic, I should chose engineering, not graphic design course. If I were to hire someone to make it work, I should study business management, rather than choosing graphic design.
As a art lover, I do hope someone can give me some advices. thanks, really
