Cafe with alcohol for gamers idea?

Hi all,

Basically I have a friend who's running a cafe which serves alcohol but is looking for ways to pull in crowd.

I was thinking of turning it into some sort of cafe which focuses on gamers but serves alcohol. Not a cyber cafe per say but more of the console or arcade type.

Would this be something that you all would visit? What would draw you all in to visit, and spend time there?

Brainstorming help needed for business ideas

Hi there,

I was just wondering if anyone could just help to brainstorm key differentiators for a Systems Integrator business (those companies which implement solutions for businesses and at the same time sell hardware too). Example would be ISS Consulting, Accenture, Mason Technologies and others.

Putting industry experience aside, if all one needs to do is just setup a company and be a partner of a vendor like Microsoft, SAP or Oracle then what other differentiators can a systems integrator use to stand out in the market?

Let's try not to venture into reducing prices, because in the long-run that wouldn't be good for any business at all. So does anyone have some bright ideas or experiences to share?

Sorry if the question is lacking in details coz it's already late at night

Everthing About Working in Sunway Group

LATEST UPDATE.

After almost 4 years since my first job at Sunway, I can't believe I am still receiving emails on this subject and this thread is still active. Kinda nostalgic for me to read my post on the matter and it seems there were some level of immaturity in me at that point of time

I will still leave my post under as unedited for all to read but now I have started my own company in Singapore since year 2010 after my various job roles within the Sunway Group business units.

I must say that the experience within the various business units have equipped me with good experience overall from sales, marketing and technical skill sets. However, had it been done in a more structured manner and if there were proper processes at that time, it would definitely be more beneficial.

I am sure with the revamped programme, kinks should be worked out by now and the last time I kept in touch with the HR personnel running this programme it still sounds very competitive in terms of compensation and benefits compared to the industry offerings.

All SMART trainees are excellent individuals and I have good memories with every one of them. For those who have managed to get into the programme, congratulations, best of luck to your careers and hopefully we might meet one day in any of the reunions of the SMART alumni

P.S: I may still reply to some PMs but it won't be as frequent as I'd like due to workload from running the business

===================================================================================================

Hi all,

Since my last postings about Sunway Group a year or more earlier, I have been receiving a lot of PMs ever since about working in Sunway, benefits, working environment, about the SMART Programme which I am part of. So instead of just answering the PMs one by one, I decided to just start a thread.

So please feel free to ask about it, I will try to give you my unbiased views but bear in mind that of course my views are affected by the experiences I go through. So fire away with the questions~!

Perhaps I shall answer a few questions first from the PMs I got:-

forumer trust86 asked:-

QUOTE

"hi, i am a final year student nw and goin to graduate at mid of 2009.....r u still working at sunway nw?? May i know more about the sunway smart program?? how about the working environment, salary, working time and also benefit(bonus....etc)?? what devision r u in nw after taking the program?
izzit good to take this program? how about the interview?? difficult??
hope to hear u soon...thanks.... "

Well yes I am still working in Sunway and generallhy the Sunway SMART Programme is a management trainee programme that you will find in all other MNC companies. It is a 2 year programme which aims to put you in a managerial position after that (though I still have not seen any member of the programme beyond an assistant manager level, so take their claim with a pinch of salt). What you get with it is the various kinds of training, rotation to different business units in the first 6 months and also the exposure to top level management.

Now for the bad part, as good as it may sound they still put you into normal positions after that which I think really kind of defeats the purpose of recruiting high calibre people and putting them to do grunt work. Having said that, it also depends on which business unit you get into. So if you are one of the lucky ones to go into profitable business units then beautiful.

Interview wise I would think it is very engaging (the final stages) but just to give you an idea you start off with a presentation after the initial selection. Then you will be short-listed from there and invited to a day-long interview where there are 3 stages of 'management games'. Overall I felt it was quite fun. won't be that difficult if your command of English is good and you have achieved your CGPA or results in an above average manner.

Raven 22 asked:-

QUOTE

Brother , are u still with sunway holding berhard ?

i got a few question about sunway working enviroments ... hope that u could give me a hand.

1. BONUS ( what is the average bonus for this group ?)
2. Increment ( roughtly how many perccent will they incerss ur pay ?)
3. benifits (for fresh graduate , dont tell me manager lvl benifits , coz im not there yet hehee)
4. will u recommend a fren to join u in sunway group ? after considering the working enviroment , people ,work load , office politics , benifits , bonus , yearly increments ....

thanks very much .

1 - Don't count on the average it differs WIDELY from BU to BU. You may get from none to up till 5 months depending on the business unit you are in.

2. - Again, don't count on mega increases, especially in today's climate. You won't nail much from the increment, at most perhaps it might be 20%. But when you are working, I don't think demanding an increment average is good. You will be rewarded handsomely if you contribute accordingly.

3. - Benefits, hmmm I guess there are a lot of discounts in Sunway related companies (i.e. Pyramid and hotels) that you can get but I guess for me the best would be the 50% education off in Sunway University College and the property discount that you get. But be careful~! All of them comes with terms and conditions. For example, the education discount does not cover the better degrees and MBAs like when I was applying for my Victoria University MBA. And the property discount only comes after you have been working 2 years with the group.

4. - Honestly, I will recommend a friend only if they are joining good business units with the right management team, other than that all the other BUs just plain sucks! An idea of the good companies would be just to look at the money generating ones (i.e. SunCity, SunCon, Sunway Medical, Sunway University College & Sunway Marketing). My personal favorite would be SunCity because I like it that their management has a long-term view and up-to-date on current developments.

Had a long chat with forumer Y3n as well but no updates after the final interview. Hope to hear from you though

What is the best resolution to an argument?

Just want to know everyone's thought on this. I and my gal always have frequent arguments with each other but trouble here is not about the argument, it's about how it gets resolved.

My method of resolution is talking through things calmly and finding a solution but my gal chooses to not talk about it at all and just let it slip over a few days (trouble is the few days will endure me to the dreaded SILENT TREATMENT and sarcastic answers which reference all my past and existing faults!!!)

Although I can bear with it to just let that few days go by, I can't help to think that in the future it will not be healthy to the relationship as issues tend to get swept under the carpet and just ignored momentarily till it pops up yet again~! I would rather find a solution which prevents the whole thing from happening altogether. Obviously my gf thinks otherwise.

Though I admit that sometimes I get emotional when the 'negotiation' talks are in progress but I just can't help it when she just fixates the problem on me alone and no matter how I explain she still won't accept it (she say she must solve it by herself !), I think it's unhealthy because if we were to pursue a future together it's supposed to be together right? Not alone! Better I dun share my problems with her (but she say cannot !)

What do you all think? Especially the gals here, do you think it's best I just leave her to her own and let her settle her emotional problems or should I still insist on talking things through (I don't think it's working coz girls can be so stubborn when they are angry)?

So sorry sorry sorry sorry sorry for the lengthy post!!!!

NOTE: Just in case you think I am at the wrong side let me give you an example, that day we were having a good nice conversation until I said something (specifically I just told her worst come to worst, then wait a few more months then only you come back) which she misunderstood for not wanting her back (we're in long-distance relationship), so I explained that it's not what she thinks and she misunderstood. Trouble here is she tells me she gets it, but she is still mad at me~! And in her mind now her only thought is me not wanting her back................no matter what I say or explain...................obviously she will be better if I just leave her alone for a few days but I really don't think it's the way to handle matters correctly
Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has tried out Maybank's foreign TT via Maybank2u? I am trying to send some money over to China, and although the beneficiary and bank details are quite easily acquired, I have one question.

How is the recipient going to collect the money if I select the cash option? And does it mean the money will be credited to their account if I select 'to account' option?

Any idea how long it usually takes to get the money through?

Thanks ya all!

Dear all,

Currently i have 2 choices in either to develop my career and skill-set in Malaysia (focusing on Siebel CRM) or to go to China (and focus on BI).

Which would be a better field to go towards? Can any of you offer your thoughts on this matter? I guess the geographic location would also affect the viability of the industry as the business culture would be different.

Thanks everyone.

n75 or u600?

Hi guys,

I'm planning to change my current Nokia 6670 to either a Samsung u600 or a Nokia n75. I'm really undecided on the two as they have pros and cons. The major factor that puts Nokia on the upper-hand right now is that I can migrate all my data easily plus I'll have less trouble with the user interface.

However, I really like Samsung's design and find that the Nokia n75 seems to look very 'cheap' due to its plastic outlook. I toyed with the Nokia for a while and it seems that it gets smudgy (dun really like to clean my phone THAT often!) really easily compared to the u600.

So any thoughts you guys can offer to make up my mind?

Thanks.

Which career path to choose?

Dear all,

My question here is quite lengthy but I think that it is necessary in order for you all to get the whole picture so that appropriate comments/feedbacks can be given.

I am currently in a dilemma on the right career path to go to. I know eventually that it boils downs to my very own interest on where I want to be but I don't think it's that clear cut. I am currently presented with the following choices which I will elaborate with its pros and cons:-

1) Continue working in where I am currently, a mid-sized IT company specializing in ERP software. I am a pre-sales consultant here, so my main job is to prepare presentations to fit a particular prospect's needs in order to attract them into buying our ERP solution.

Pros :- I am learning the best practices of every industry and its departments (i.e. purchasing, supply chain, sales cycle, manufacturing) and when I leave next time I have all the knowledge to venture into any industry I want.

Cons: - My career progression seems limited, because it would mean from what I am to a salesman, and most probably to a sales manager (that is if the existing salesperson don't get there first).

2) Accept the trainee programme offered by a reputable bank, which places me into their investment banking division.

Pros :- Will be able to work in banking industry whilst knowing the ins and outs of investment banking through a structured development programme. Higher pay too plus good year-end bonus!

Cons:- Not much actually.

3) Return to my former company, which specializes in manufacturing. The request actually came from quite a powerful figure in the company.

Pros :- Wide exposure in management as I will be allocated any area according to my preference and will be given a free hand in running all matters as long as I am able to provide justifications. Company is expanding rapidly overseas and looking at the export market. Not much young people in the company, so competition for management positions are also less and with the powerful figure's backing I might be able to progress really quick upwards.

Cons :- Due to lack of young people, might be hard to get things rolling due to mindset. No formal or structured training as compared to the bank. Most probably have to do everything myself (one-leg-kick-all)

Thank you for reading and I hope that I can see some valuable feedbacks/comments.

Wira Auto 'button' question

Hello everyone,

As usual, I must admit that I am a noob when it comes to cars. I have a Wira 1.6(A) 1993, my question is about a button which is located near the hand brake. It allows you to switch to either 'Pwr' or 'Eco' mode.

After going through the very very old supplied manual, it seems that 'Pwr' = Power mode which gives you more power, while 'Eco'=Economical mode which gives you fuel economy.

What i wanna ask is, does it really work? I've tried it but seems like there is no difference when I switch between the 2. And how does it actually work? Is it recommended to put it on 'Eco' or 'Pwr' mode?

Many thanks in advance to all those who will reply

P&G Management Program

Dear all,

I was looking around the forum and stumbled upon someone mentioning about the P&G Management Program (and they were saying the pay was RM3000 or so? )

Anyways, does anyone have an approximation of what the pay might be? RM3K for a fresh graduate sounds too good to be true for me. And is anyone in the program itself? I would like to know more about it. Is this a good program? Anyone can comment on working in the company?

Furthermore, are the tests and interviews a breeze or is it tough as hell? I haven't had time to look through their sample test papers but will do so in time. Meanwhile if anyone can offer some insight on this, please do.

I don't want to be stuck in another management trainee program where they don't really care about you after the first 6 months and just leave you on your own, with no development plan or clear career path.

I'm currently in Sunway's SMART Management Trainee program, and I'm looking for something more challenging.

Thanks in advance everyone.
