Wintel in banking line

Dear all,

I'm not sure if this is a repeating post but I would like to ask u guys/girls out there some opinion about working in banks datacenter, in the Wintel systems (infrastructure). This is my first time in a banking environment and from what I've seen so far since the day I had started work (since last week), 70-80% of the jobs are done by the vendor (IBM, EDS or CSA) while my colleague only do some 20-30% of the jobs.

I've seen that my senior called the IBM guys to format the server and configure the SAN storage which to me if they had do some training, they can do it on their own. I'm not sure if this is normal but to me, there is nothing much to learn. I'm not sure yet but so far, nothing much to do for Wintel. Pay and benefits are good but the job...not challenging at all.

Please advice and if possible, tell me how things are done in datacenters for a bank.
