PhD? Need Advice - Newbie here

Greetings everyone, would like to ask for some expert and mature advice on pursuit of knowledge in the field of AI. I'm from EE Engineering background but majoring in signal processing and have always been interested in AI field. I have been working for a few years now in one of the MNCs in malaysia and would like to further improve myself.

A few doubts i have are:
1) Is a PhD in this field worth it or better to gain industrial experience? my aim is to be working in industry + lecturer (have passion for teaching). perhaps might convert to full time lecturer in my later years.
2) Usually how does one graduate from a PhD? On average, completion of thesis and how many journals/papers do i need to publish before one can graduate?
3) Any good institute for this? (UM/USM/UTM or overseas[have insufficient funding for full Xyears of PhD:(])?

Would greatly appreciate your advice in the matter above. Thanks.

Is this gold investment legit?

Hi everyone,
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but i'm in a dilemma. My dad is planning to invest with this company called "Triumph FX",link from Hong Kong, not sure if you have heard of before and everything sounds like a scam to me...here's the model:
1) You pay min USD 3K as an initial amount.
2) The fund manager will invest and earn accordingly.
3) Every transaction can be seen and can withdraw anytime.

He heard from one of his friend that he has earned more than 40% in one year (this is the part that rings all the scam bells i have) and that he has withdrawn a portion of the earnings without any problems...there's nothing in it for his friend to intro (no affiliate or intro reward) as the account is opened directly with HK company...

im worried that they let you taste the honey first then later they run off with your money and even more so after recent geneva gold scam...anyone heard or tried this before? Would greatly appreciate anyone with any advice on this...thanks.

Hi All,
Would like to enquire, was wondering if you all know what's the difference between Samsung S27D390H vs its Samsung S27D390HS variant...i'm so confused as the price are about RM 60 difference. They seem to be from different region, i'm concern on the quality or build differences that cause the price to be different as well. Would appreciate your guidance on this matter!:)

links:

http://www.samsung.com/levant/consumer/com...r/LS27D390HS/ZN

http://www.samsung.com/hk_en/consumer/comp...pe=series-3-led

Hi everyone,
Was wondering if there's any seller out there that have these models? i have a few questions:
1) What's the difference between 390 vs 590 in terms of performance, i'm gonna use it for gaming and HD movies. I read that PLS is samsung's
proprietary technology but has similar performance to IPS. Is this true?
2) Is the warranty by Samsung? (This is a must have).
3) Any other recommendation with similar/better performance/price (+-RM300 is ok)? and please quote best price for the models mentioned &
recommended if any.

Would highly appreciate any advice in the matters above. Thanks:)

Hi Sifus,
Oddly enough, when i start up com, i can hear a faint stutter-clicking like sound coming from the GPU but it gets louder when i play games like skyrim.
CM Hyper 212x Replacement Fan

Hi Sifus,
I am trying to replace the stock fan that comes with the hyper212x but am having difficulty choosing one that is suitable. I came across a few like scythe gentle typhoon 1850rpm and noctua s12b. Was wondering if these fans would do better than CM AFTERMARKET HEATSINK. Budget would be less than RM100, hopefully can get one that has better performance than the current one. Thanks.

Hi Sifus,
Recently i fixed up my first rig, and after using it for a week, there are a few times when i boot up, the cpu fan will fail giving the error message "CPU fan error". I can see it is not spinning at all during boot up. i read some threads saying to lower the minimum monitoring rpm to 200 which initially solved the problem but occassionally the fan still won't turn at all, unless i gently tap the fan blades (manually spinning the fan). Could it be the voltage is insufficient? I updated my bios to the latest version and checked the connections on my mobo already. THe following is my rig specs:

i7-3770k
Intel SSD 520 series 240GB
ASUS p8z77-m
CM Hyper 212x
Sapphire HD7870XT
Seasonic G550
2x Kingston 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 ram

Please help...Thanks in advance!

CPU FAN Fails!

Hi Sifus,
This is my first new rig but for some reason, sometimes, the cpu fan won't start spinning when i boot up, and the error: CPU FAN Error will appear and cannot proceed. I tried to tap the cpu fan gently and it starts spinning, somehow i get the feeling the fan is faulty or not enough voltage is coming out from the CPU fan plug to power the fan. All my parts are just 1 week old and i have updated the bios to the latest. The following is my rig:

i7-3770k
intel ssd 520 series 240GB
asus p8z77-m
CM Hyper 212x
seasonic G550
Sapphire HD7870XT

anyone has any idea? i'm 1000% sure i fix the cpu fan to the correct plug as i could monitor it just fine using HW monitor and the temps are fine too which ranges from about 40-55 Celsius. anyone got any idea on this? should i get the fan replaced or another fan as backup?hyper 212x is like evo (evo no stock hence had to get this...)...thanks in advance!

Hi All,
I didn't notice it until after fixing up all the part and cables, one of the leg is not touching a flat surface compared to the other three other legs. any advice how i can fix this or do i need to change a new unit (trying to avoid this as i spent hours to do the cable management)? I know it can be solved using a piece of paper folded to match the thickness but i can't believe corsair manufactures such casing with defects...did i like accidentally pressed or pushed something that cause the casing to be unbalanced? i can snap a photo of it if needed. Please do advice...Thanks...

Hi everyone,
I am trying to build a rig for my bro with the following specs:

CPU: I7-3770K
RAM: CORSAIR CML8GX3M2A1600C9 (4GB 1600MHz x 2)
Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77 M
GPU: SAPPHIRE AMD RADEON HD 7870
PSU: Corsair Gaming Series 700WATT
Casing: Corsair Carbide 400R
CPU Heatsink: COOLER MASTER Hyper 612S
HDD: INTEL SSD 520S 240GB

Is this build enough to play games like battlefield 3(including most oif the high end games) and also do some video editting? should i just get a HD7850 instead of the HD7870 by AMD? Any opinion on this rig is greatly appreciated...( I7-3770K and SSD are bundled so cannot be removed)...I would like to leave the overclocking option available but rarely use it. Some other concern is the motherboard and PSU...is the PSU enough to support the specifications along with 2 additional 2TB caviar green from WD and is the motherboard good enough or do i need to get the -V edition? ...other than that, does anyone know any good 24" monitor brand? i particularly like smasung because of their after sales service...any idea?...Thanks in advance!:)
