Dali new dealership

Dear audiophiliacs,

I was going back from work yesterday when I stumbled upon a few pairs of bookshelf Dali speakers in the A&L shop in Amcorp. It seems the dealership for Dali has changed hands and they are now able to sell these Danish speaker brand. I saw a pair of Concepts, Lector 1s, and the high end Mentor series with their specialized double tweeter technology. Just to let you guys know that the pricing for the Lector series is quite reasonable. The bookshelves are less than 2K! Unfortunately the Lector2s (these babies got WhatHiFi's 5 star treatment) are not in stock yet. Mid-August the dude at the shop said.

Not alot of people I know use Dali. And there aren't that many on the used market either. I got myself an old Dali 3Bs from the eighties and they still sound good to my ears. What I want is the Lector2s with their old-skool wood-pulp cones and soft tweeter setup. This is a really cool development, since I used to just get to drool at the Dalis at CitySquare, paired up with some intimidating Holfi amps. Now they are in my neighborhood! WOOHOO! Kena simpan duit nih...nak beli Lector2 nanti...heheheh...

Knobby amplifiers or non-knobby amplifiers

Hi,

I have a general question on amplifiers, if the many sifus here can help me with.

Now, I'm currently using an old Sansui (AU505 50W) amp to power a pair of old Dali (B3) bookshelf speakers (sitting on cheap stands filled with sand). The amp comes with many features like balance, treble, bass, loudness, high/low filters, loudness, mic option, headphone jack, mono/stereo, etc... My amp has a lot of knobs. It's a very knobby amp.

I play quite abit of Rock: classic and 90's and post. I find that the bookshelf lacks in the bass department; the tom-toms sound like their made out of cardboard. So I've had to crank up the bass feature knob to almost maximum to get the full sound of the bass & drums...if not very thin macam mini-compo...

My question is: will a higher-end, less knobby amp be able to give the bass that rock music needs from the bookshelfs? I've been looking at these particular amps: the Rega Brio3 (49W), the Nakamichi IA-3 (40W), MusicalFidelity Class A A1 (25W). All within my budgetary requirements and all have only 1 or 2 knobs: 'Input Selector' and 'Volume'; 'Balance' pun tarak. They are very non-knobby amps. Will they be able to give that extra oomph in the bass to the bookshelfs?

Or should I just replace the bookshelf with floorstanders with lots and lots of drivers?

Thanks guys.

Sharp Warehouse Sale

Hey,

I just got a Sale flyer from my photocopy man. It says there's going to be a warehouse sale at Sharp&Roxy Sales & Service office. The tagline:

"Fantastic Reduced Prices. A full-range of Sharp innovations from audio-visual and home entertainment products to home appliances!"

It's on a Saturday, 23rd August, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The place however is in Shah Alam:

No 1A, Persiaran Kuala Langat, Section 27, 40400 Shah Alam

The flyer has a small map that makes no sense whatsoever.

Anyway...thought maybe you guys would like to know...I don't know what's going to be there, maybe blenders and stuff...

Boarding Gate

Hey,

Anybody seen Boarding Gate?

Bad reviews on RottenTomatoes.com but I really liked the movie. Asia Argento is beautiful and she has tits to salivate to.

It's a bit of a mixed genre film, but it oozes sexuality and danger. I enjoyed it very much.

Anyone else?

CD Damper Ring

Hey,

I read in stereophile online about CD Damper Ring. It's supposed to damp vibrations on Compact Discs. I'm not really sure how it works and can't seem to get anything on the net about it. Anybody know anything about this thing? How exactly does it work?

Thanks in advance

Speaker Grills/Cover

Hey,

I hope this is not a stupid question. But I am just wondering if there is a consensus on speaker grills. Should they stay on the speakers when playing music or should they be off? Personally I pull them off but a friend of mine said they should be on for some speakers, like DALI speakers.

Thanks in advance

Mystery DALI speakers

Hei,

Just wondering if anyone can help on DALI speakers. I have a friend who wants to let go of a pair of Bookshelf DALI speakers at a reasonable price for me. However he doesn't know what particular series this speakers come from. Can confirm it is definitely DALI, however the label at the back of the speakers are very worn out and I cannot make out what series it's from.

Is there anyone that can help? DALI archival expert?

It's rather old, without bi-wiring facilities and flat black. I think it's got metal tweeters, but I'm not sure about that.

I don't think it's a Menuet since it looks different than all the pictures I find in the internet. Maybe it's of the Blue series? I'll try to get a picture up sometime soon.

In any case, anyone deal with DALI speakers? Are they good? Are they truly made in Denmark or China?

If I buy them, I want to hook them up to a hifi system specifically for music: grunge, 70s rock, pop, funk, electro, post-rock. Would they be good? I'm currently using Wharfedale Crystal Bookshelfs wired to a Sansui AU505 with 50watts on each channel (everything second hand and running like an old Volkswagon but I'm slowly trying to upgrade it as budget permits...). My sources are an old Lenco75 turntable and an old Phillips CD650 player.

Can anyone help?
