Silent treatment scenarios

Folks, an interesting mamak topic around: “silent treatment” when an argument arises- sometimes for days..

One side would consider it as an opportunity to calm down and analyze the issue. Another would claim it’s “missing in action”.

Question 1: is it normal? Yes, No.

Question 2: who does it more? Men or women.

Any sassy personal stories would be interesting too

Advice on broadband package to take

Dear Sifus/Experts,

Would like to inquire which is the best broadband package that I should consider for my own use, moving into a new residence.

Usage Profile:
- Mostly streaming online videos or through a mediabox-a-thingy
- Log on to VPN for work
- Skype calls
- The usual: Streaming music, e-mails, surfing, online reading
- Rarely download/torrent

I guess if the connection speed is good & stable enough to stream a HD movie, I'm okay.

So which plan is the best bang for my buck?

Thanks a bunch!

Bangsar Condos

Dear taikos,

Did some searching and realized there's quite limited info on bangsar condo's as a whole despite being a well-received expat haven (if I may call it that).

We have really old developments such as Casa Vista or Bangsar Puteri, to very recently completed ones such as Gaya Bangsar. There's really a myriad of selections for the savvy investor's picking: Araville, Bangsar Peak, Bangsar Puteri, Bayu Angkasa, Casa Vista, Cascadium, Contessa, Desa Bangsaria, Gaya Bangsar, Ken Bangsar, Menara Bangsar, One Menerung, Suasana Bangsar, The Ara Bangsar, The Loft Bangsar, Tivoli Villas, Zehn.

Cutting to the chase, I'm hunting for a sub-sale unit based on:
1. For rental investment purposes (+4% min)
2. Targeting young professionals (expats).
3. Size of unit preferably limited to within 1100 sqft give or take (I have a personal bias that smaller units offer better COCR, easier to let go due to the psychological price of the absolute value of larger units)
4. Absolute value to be within 800k and to be tagged at least 12% below bank valuation.

I've had my eye on Gaya Bangsar studio unit (671 sqft) for a while now. Latest transacted price was 590-600k. My sweetspot would be 515k-ish.

An alternative would be Suasana Bangsar's 2-bedroom suite (type D/D1/D2 ranging from 1112 - 1131sqft). Anyone heard of issues with this development (e.g sewage smells?).

Appreciate sifu's insights on the bangsar area and advices based on my simplified criteria. Example, target units within walking distance to BSC/BV with the rationale that rental can hold better like Sri Penaga.

Thanks in advanced

Value of Sunway Property
Dear All,

Need your advice on the property market near to Sunway College (i.e Sunway Lagoon View Condo, Residences, Indah Villa) pertaining to the current market value (RM xx psf)).

Seems to fluctuate an awful lot from condo to condo. Where can one check what's the market price for each property development?

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

External Display for Macbook Pro
Dear LYN sifu's,

I've done a search on this topic and I guess existing threads are very much specific to the threadmaster's requirements.

So here is my scenario:

Need an external display (21"-27") for my 13" Macbook Pro. The main use would be as a "monitor" to the lappie, office work, movie-watching, surfing and a-bit of Starcraft 2. No console gaming of sorts.

Is there any drawback in using TV's (Be it LED or LCD)? I've tried 32" LCD's, tad bit too BIG.

Appreciate any recommendations from fellow forumers. Looking for something in the RM1.2k-ish region.

Many thanks in advanved.

First Step into Property Purchasing [Condo]

I'm 25 years old and I have RM 1.2~1.5k disposable per month.

The situation is I'm planning to buy a condo/apartment within Sunway College area in Q4 of 2009. My objectives are multi-layered but they are in order of priority:

1. Invest my money rather than let it rot in a bank.

2. One of the rooms for my sis as she commences her studies in Sunway College in January 2010.

3. The company I work for offer housing benefits whereby "The interest payable by the employee is 3.5% computed on a monthly rest basis. Interest exceeding 3.5% is subsidised by the Company up to a combined total of 15% per annum. Beyond this 15%, any additional interest is shared on a 50:50 basis between the employee and the Company. Tax on the interest subsidy is for Company’s account."

4. My first step into property investment. I'm naive, I know nothing about buying property, I'm bound to walk down wrong paths, but I have to start somewhere.

If you were in my shoes:

A) Which condo's would you look at? Why?
B) What are the DO's and DONT's when it comes to property purchasing in General and specifically for condo's?

Appreciate any comments/suggestions/criticism.

Windows Mobile 6 streaming woes

I find this absolutely weird.

I just got off a call from Celcom Technical support. I was calling to ask why I can't seem to stream vids off youtube mobile despite having the streaming player on my HTC Touch Dual. I have no issues whatsoever with surfing the net, but when I stream, "Fail to connect to network" is all I get.

So the operator in the end told me that Celcom3G DOES NOT support streaming media for windows mobile 6 (WM6). And she told me that I'm not the first person to call and complain regarding this.

I find it "convenient" for them to leave this piece of info out when I signed up for the package along with the pda.

But then again, how true is what I was told?

Surely someone out there can prove the operator wrong?

External HDD woes
I have a 2.5" 120GB WD HDD that I purchased a little over a year ago, and it's no longer functioning as it should.

Whenever I plug in to the USB port, I get the following message "USB device not recognized". I've tried the device on three other desktops/lappies to no avail. The same message appears. So it's down to two possibilities:

1. The external casing is a goner

2. The HDD is a goner

Has anyone has a similar experience? Is there a sure bet of knowing? No, I do not have extra 2.5" drives to test the casing. And no, I don't have anywhere convenient to plug in the 2.5" HDD at home.

Any advice or suggestions are much appreciated.

Histogram help

Recently, for a project i'm undergoing, i need to find out the number of pixels whereby the image is black. The purpose of knowing this is so that i can make a comparison between 2 selected objects within the same image. Both of these objects will be black in colour. By being able to determine the number of black pixels for both these objects respectively, i will be able to determine the area.

Is there anyone who's an expert at this? I've tried googling for a satisfactory answer but all i can get is that the histogram tool can be used in Paint Shop Pro. Perhaps anyone can shed some light?

EDIT: oh dear, i'm in the wrong section.
What is love to you?

I came across some of these lines..

--It's better u lose your pride with someone you love, rather than you lose the someone you love with ueless pride..

--When u love someone, dun expect the person to love u back the same amount, one of u ll be ahead n the other behind, its either u catch up or the other waits..

--True love hears what is not spoken, and understands what is not explained.for love doesn't work in the mouth, not the mind, but in the heart...

--Love is like standing on wet cement, the longer u stay the harder it is,u can never go without leaving ur prints behind.dun love a person like a flower, because a flower dies in season...

--Love may leave your heart like shattered glass, but keep in mind that someone ll be willing to pick up the pieces,so tat u could be whole again.i do hope the person will be u....

--The cruelest thing in the world is you let him fall in love with you when you dun intend to catch his fall and fooling around with him and to think that he means nothing much!!

So is love just an overrated emotion in the modern society today? Where minors just "fall in love" only to realize that it's nothing more than puppy love; when experts say that love just lasts 3 months and that then from that point on it requires effort from both parties to make the relationship work; Or are there still believers in the hopeless romantics of chivalry of Prince Charming, of loving someone so much that it hurts, of loving silently when all seems to fail?
