KUANTAN: Offers of money, con men and threats of violence have become the bane of families living in the Felda settlement in Bukit Goh here ever since the area was identified as a huge deposit of the “red gold” – bauxite.

Settler Mohd Hamdi Shuib, 49, said his father went into depression after being conned by contractors who wanted to mine the family’s 10ha lot.

He said the contractors offered RM200,000 but after paying RM40,000 and clearing off the family’s palm trees, they did not mine the land or pay the balance.

“Ayah pening (My father doesn’t know what to do),” he said.

Without palm trees to harvest and no payment from the miners, the money quickly ran out, as settlers are required to pay Felda RM47,000 in replanting fees if they cut down their trees.

“Luckily, it was a contract kedai kopi which allowed us to exit the deal,” said Mohd Hamdi, adding that many other settlers were not as lucky.

He said the contractors threatened his family when he approached other contractors to do the mining. “But nothing untoward happened.”

According to Bernama, settler Salwani Tajuddin, 37, was offered RM1mil as payment but she was determined not to lease her oil palm lot.

She said a man approached her early last year, offering a deposit of RM500,000 to mine her land. When she rejected the offer, the man came back a few days later offering double the amount.

“After I turned down that offer, the man was furious and said I was stupid for saying no to that much money.

“As for me, those who lease their land to the bauxite operators are the real losers, as the money can only last for a while but their land will not return to its previous condition,” she said.

Salwani, a settler for the last 18 years, said she did not want her oil palm to be affected by the bauxite mining activities.

She said the man approached her a few months later asking that her land be used as a “stockpile” area for lorries and bauxite ore – with a payment of RM5,000 monthly. Again, she turned him down.

Her father Tajuddin Harun, 68, who runs a food stall, said the bauxite operators did not fulfil their promise of paying a monthly compensation of RM1,000 for every trader and RM500 for every household.

He said he received RM1,000 in November but nothing else.

“My business is affected as customers are staying away because of the dust kicked up by the bauxite lorries. I was forced to fork out RM6,000 to install a canvas (to cover my stall),” he added.

Another food stall operator, Ramlah Awang, 49, said her family did not lease out their land – fortunately due to her parent’s insistence.

“They believe the trees will keep making money; bauxite is just a fleeting promise,” she said.

Ramlah, whose store is along a main road on Bukit Goh, said she had earlier considered leasing the family lot since business suffered due to the dust from passing lorries but abided by her parents’ wishes.

Bukit Goh was one of the main locations of rampant bauxite mining and has seen massive change into a “red zone” due to the bauxite dust.

Felda Bukit Goh Settler Welfare committee deputy chairman Nik Abd Majid Nik Sin said that of the 671 settlers in the area, 248 had leased out their land and about 150 had had their land cleared.

Bukit Goh Bauxite Issues Committee secretary Dr Sahrudin Mohd said the settler’s 10ha lots were usually worth upwards of RM500,000.

On Saturday, committee chairman Datuk Dr Abd Wahid Abd Manap asked the state government to grant residents and miners licences, as the town had become a cowboy town with miners not caring about the law as they were illegal to begin with.

He said the committee had handled several cases where residents were cheated by such miners.

“It’s often difficult to help since they’ve already signed contracts. Instead, we ask residents to approach us or get lawyers to ensure that their contracts are fair,” he said.

Last July, 71 settlers who allowed their land to be mined for bauxite claimed they had been cheated in the deal.

When the issue was raised with Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob, he said the state government was unable to press criminal charges against the bauxite miners as they had struck a deal with the settlers.

As the deals were between two individuals, the settlers were told to bring their cases to court.

KUANTAN, 9 Jan — Penduduk di sini sengsara akibat debu merah dan pencemaran bauksit tetapi peneroka-peneroka Felda pula mendapat durian runtuh.

Peneroka warga emas menjadi jutawan segera hasil aktiviti perlombongan bauksit di sini selepas membenarkan pengusaha mengorek tanahnya menjadi tapak perlombongan mineral itu.

Peneroka Bukit Goh, Mohamed Ibrahim, 71, berkata pendapatannya mencecah RM1.2 juta tahun lalu hasil kerja mengorek bauksit di kawasan ladang kelapa sawitnya seluas empat hektar.

Secara purata, lapor Harian Metro, dia memperoleh bayaran antara RM100,000 hingga RM200,000 sebulan sejak Mei 2015, bergantung kepada hasil pengeluaran bauksit.

Hasil keuntungan itu digunakan untuk mengubah suai rumah kepada enam bilik tidur dengan enam bilik air, menelan belanja RM200,000 untuk anak-anak dan cucu-cucunya berkumpul.

“Saya juga gunakan wang itu untuk membeli Toyota Camry dengan harga kira-kira RM100,000 secara tunai.

“Oleh sebab teringin pandu Mercedes Benz, saya beli Mercedes terpakai pada harga RM15,000, juga secara tunai,” Mohamed dipetik berkata.

“Itu untuk 'lepaskan' angan-angan saya saja. Selepas ini saya mahu membeli Toyota Hilux kerana ia lebih sesuai digunakan di jalan dalam ladang sawit.”

Beliau mendapat bayaran RM20,000 selepas menandatangani tawaran kontrak pada April tahun lalu dan kemudian wang pendahuluan RM200,000 sebelum kerja mengorek tanah di ladangnya.

Mengikut kontrak, beliau dibayar RM10 bagi setiap tan bauksit dan lazimnya antara 20,000 hingga 40,000 tan metrik tanah dikeluarkan dari ladangnya setiap bulan.

Mohamed berkata syarikat sama juga membayar RM40,000 kepadanya sebagai kos menanam semula sawit selepas pihak berkenaan selesai melombong bauksit di tanahnya.

Putraja mengarahkan kegiatan ini dihentikan selama tiga bulan mulai 15 Januari susulan pencemaran serius udara dan punca air di kawasan-kawasan sekitar perlombongan ini.

Namun peneroka dan pemandu lori bauksit, yang bergantung pada perlombongan, membantah langkah tersebut.

How to improve electronic contact?

hi /k people expert in all fields, honorable judges, knowledgeable engineer, deans of university of lowyat,

want to ask how to improve electronics punya contact? I clean the contact using lighter fluid,
but sometimes it wont last long before cleaning is required again
is there any way to do it? for general electronics product

my problem: my Fenix E01 twist on/off small flashlight. I think the main circuit contact to the aluminium body contact is not good
1 unit no problem, the other one always cannot on, need to clean the contact frequently.
I also suspect it is due to the silicone grease I applied on the o-ring
the one without problem I never apply silicone grease b4
can share how to clean it?

I left my Stanley screw driver set on my desk this morning. Had to interview 2 fresh graduate candidates for engineer position.

After the 2 sessions, I found the 2mm flat head missing. Then this janitor came and put on my desk without saying anything. There is also a piece of sticker missing from my desk which i believe he took it

I found some yellowish thing on the tip of screwdriver. I believe he used to korek his ears

Damn it. So disgusting.

Should I be worry? This janitor always peep my borghh. I sked he put black magic on my screwdriver. What to do with the screwdriver now?

I have a bunch of virgin hair length 12", the bunch is about 1" diameter
dark black, thick, very healthy hair, no splitting, never been dyed before

belongs to my GF. She wanted to donate for cancer children initially, later found the "organisation" is not trustworthy

The only place we heard of is Sungei Wang. We don't feel like going there
we dont want to end up selling the hair like scrap or rubbish

Vios 2006 won't start after sitting for 3 weeks

Toyota Vios (year 2006) won't start and jump start after sitting for 3 weeks

1st, I tried to start the car, engine runs for about 3 seconds and die.

When I tried to start again, the cranking noise was weak and slow follows by quick ticking sound - sounds like a dead/drained battery

Then I tried to jump start using jump cables to another car (Avanza 1.5L).
Engine cranks but will not start.
Have tried shifting the gears
Using another set of jump cables
With another different car

If anyone knows how to solve or troubleshoot the problem please help and comment.
I will call a mechanic to my place if necessary. If I can do it myself sure it will help me to save a lot of money.
Your help is much appreciated
