DIY eD A7s-650 subwoofer

Guys,

I had ordered DIY kit for eD A7s-650 subwoofer. Estimated another 2 weeks to receive the item. Total weight for the whole subwoofer should be around 200lbs.

Anyway, I need help to source for Titebond II wood glue. Kind of hard to get in Penang. I asked my friend to look in Ace Hardware Puchong but he only manage to find the Titebond I.

Below is the wood glue I need for the project.
http://www.amazon.com/Franklin-Internation...72870101&sr=8-2

I'm still deciding either to just paint the subwoofer with wood paint or laminate.

The DIY kit is NOT for you if:
1. You must have your sub now!
2. You choose barbie doll over bob the builder when you are small.
3. You always hammer your finger.
4. You never fix any IKEA furniture in your life.

eD Sub comparison. Please note that this is not the max SPL level.

[attachmentid=1680682]

Update 18/6
DIY kits arrive in Penang waiting for custom clearance. Wood glue received from Amazon. Hopefully I can build the sub next week.

Update 21/6
All 5 items arrived. The sub drivers are huge and heavy. Total are around 85kg. Each sub driver is around 20kg++.

[attachmentid=1638280]
[attachmentid=1638281]

Update 22/6
Fixing up the frame for measurement. Side panels are bend a bit. Will measure and drill some pilot hole at the joint to straighten the panel.

[attachmentid=1639860]

Update 23/6
Gluing and clamping with F-Clamp. I only got 4 and should get 2 more to speed up the process.

[attachmentid=1643141]

Update 25/6
Turn out eD forget to ship the rubber feet with the kit. Alex from eD promise to send out today. So far communication with eD is pretty good. The bracing is done.

Update 26/6
Almost there. Looks like I need more screw to pull the panel straight.

[attachmentid=1645962]

Update 27/6
Final panel is in. Tonight will need to drill some pilot hole for speaker and plate amp. Then sanding the edge and off it go for spraying.

[attachmentid=1649716]

Update 30/6
Send to auto spray shop for putty fill up, sanding and spraying. Total cost around RM 350 and take around 5 days as it is labour intensive. I'm expecting a mirror finish.

Update 7/7
Spraying done. Now waiting for the rubber feet before installing the drivers and amp.

[attachmentid=1666125]
[attachmentid=1666126]

Update 15/7
Build Completed. Will test out the sub tomorrow. I need to re-organize my theater room for new speaker JTR Triple8HT for LCR.

[attachmentid=1677730]
[attachmentid=1677731]
[attachmentid=1677733]
[attachmentid=1677746]

JTR Triple 8
[attachmentid=1677748]

Beauty and the Beast
[attachmentid=1683735]
[attachmentid=1683737]

Completed HT room. Can't see the eD A7s-650 sub as it is hidden behind the false wall.
[attachmentid=1683740]

First Impression on Sub
Definitely a step up compare to Velo DD-12. The punch is better, stronger and yet there is a sense of better control. You don't feel the bass overhang in the room. One quick test is where Joker crash the party and batman is punching all the thug, you can feel the force of a solid punch. DD-12 is a bit mushy with less impact.

Kung Fu Panda skidoosh scene. I can feel the wave in stages when the energy is release which give much stronger bass sensation.

I can summarize that the bass feel very control and start and stop faster. Will do a REW graph this few days and try to integrate the DD-12 to smooth out the freq response. If I can't manually dial in the settings, might consider getting a SVS EQ1.

First Impression on JTR T8
The first feeling is it feel diff than B&W 603. When there is a scene of people chattering with background music, you can feel that you are among the crowd and music is playing in a diff layer. I think it should be the separation that work out this feeling. I'll need some more listening before giving a detail review.

REW graph for eD-A7s650 in my HT room.

[attachmentid=1686343]
[attachmentid=1686344]
[attachmentid=1686345]
[attachmentid=1686346]

Max SPL before sub bottoming out.
[attachmentid=1686347]

Estimated curve that can be achieved using FBQ2496 with REW. Note that it need 10 points correction to get it as flat as possible.
[attachmentid=1686416]

Another graph after recalibrate the sub level with 1/3 octave smoothing.

JTR T8 speaker updated impression after adding EQ
Before the EQ, I feel that the vocal is not that good compare to my bookshelf M&D speaker. Turn out after using REW for measurement, there is a problem within 300hz to 1khz where there is a huge dip initially than a boost near 1khz. That's almost 15db difference within 300hz to 1khz.

Since I got the FBQ2496 for sub eq which can be use to EQ the main speaker, I give it a try. FBQ2496 had 20 filters that can correct within the range of 20hz to 20khz. I only tune in 80hz to 10khz for the main speaker as I don't think the Galaxy CM-140 is accurate above 10khz. In fact the specs only mention it is accurate from 30hz to 7khz +/- 1.5db.

Turn out after the EQ, the vocal is sweet and believable. Watching movie, there is a sense of in there. Attached is the graph with 1/6 smoothing of before and after EQ. Going to get a second unit FBQ2496 for center channel and sub EQ.

[attachmentid=1698731]
[attachmentid=1698738]

Avatar Blu-ray 2D vs Cinema 3D

I'm going to give a simple review based on Avatar 3D that I watched few months back in Gurney GSC cinema vs Blu-ray using 114" screen with BENQ W6000 projector.

Not going to discuss on storyline and focus purely on PQ and SQ.

One word, get this movie. I know extended version is coming out in November but this movie is stunning to show off your 1080p projector. Now I understand why James Cameron said that Avatar need to be watch on big screen. Those owning 720p projector, this movie alone justify the move to 1080p projector.

Picture Quality:

Cinema 3D version - The 3D is quite well done but the problem with local cinema is the focus too soft. Also color is quite plain and the 3D polarize glass do have some crosstalk and color bleeding issue. Maybe IMAX theater is better but I always feel that local cinema PQ is no match to a good HT.

Blu-ray 2D version - Clean and sharp movie. One of the sharpest movie I ever seen. It's like returning to Pandora again with the glasses on. The opening scene in space showing the spaceship is so details and sharp that it had a 3D pop to it. Not the kind of real 3D but you can sense some depth. This is a 2 edges sword as it also exposed that some of the scene is created by CGI, but a very beautiful scene. Remind me of Final Fantasy type of beautiful CGI world. Color is brilliant compare to cinema and you will enjoy every single scene in the movie. You can't detect any noise in the picture even in very dark scene.

Sound Quality:
Audio quality is top notch. Not the bass show off type of movie. The scene in the jungle is so well done that you feel like in the middle of jungle surrounded by animals and insects. Sound is clean and clear.

If I have to choose either 3D cinema or 2D blu-ray, I would prefer 2D blu-ray version anytime. The artwork and CGI is truly marvelous.

XPA-5 in the house

Just got the XPA-5 today. Damn the local ketam. The tax originally calculated at around RM 960 based on USD 1025 including shipping. Somehow the local ketam jack up the shipping cost as they mention for 88lbs for USD 210 is too low. So in the end, I'm force to pay RM 1252 for tax. Really damn piss off.

Anyway, the amp is very heavy and I have to carry it 2 floor up (my HT room is at 2nd floor). The thing almost broke my back. After recover my breath, start to setup by connecting L,C,R output from Onkyo 805 to emotiva amp. As I'm using RCA, need to switch it from balance to unbalance. The voltage is auto switching so no problem for 240v. I actually use another outlet as this amp is rated 1800watts during peak. I have 2 dedicated outlet with 15amp breaker each. My DD-12 amp is rated 2000w + Onkyo 805 + HTPC + XPA-5 in one outlet might blow the fuse.

OK, here come my initial assessment. Some of you might believe in equipment burn in so this is still fresh from the oven with around 2 hours of listening. Unlike my other class A amp which really need at least 200hrs to start sound nice, emotiva XPA-5 sounds good out from the box. I hope it will improve as I put more hours in. I wouldn't use the word night and day difference here compare to Onkyo 805. The main improvement is when playing at high volume, the separation is much better and lower distortion. You can listen to the dialog easily during complex scene. Example would be Pearl Harbor movie when the Jap bomb Pearl Harbor. Before XPA-5, I feel that Onkyo sound compress and muddy (Note that I listen at -5db to -8db for most of the movie). Dialog is a little bit hard to follow with all the sound effects going on. It sound a little bit too chaotic to follow the action in the movie. With the XPA-5 in, you can turn off the subtitle. Sound effects is more separated and surround also sound better which I believe more power available for 4 surround speakers with lower distortion. You can hear more details easily. One scene that I never notice is where 2 kids pissing in the field while the Jap plane fly over. I had watch this scene at least 3 times before the XPA-5 and I never pay attention that the kids are pissing in the field. For the first time, I can hear them pissing (maybe the sound is there, but with Onkyo it is not clear so might miss out the details). Sound is also tighter and integrate better with my sub.

Overall, it meet my objective where my priority is to improve dialogue clarity and easy to follow action sound during movie. Haven't try out for music so that would be for next add-on review. If anyone interested, I would advice you find out what is your weakest link in your system and priority. For HT, the first thing to get is a good sub, then speaker finally amp. Now I feel my weakest link would be my speaker. Also, if you don't listen at very loud level said around -20db, then I believe the improvement might not be too drastic. I had try Onkyo at -20db while it doesn't sound too muddy, but it's too soft and no kick during movie. My SPL meter show sound level at 80db to 100db throughout the movie at -5db volume on Onkyo 805.

After 24 hours burn in update.
OK. If you ask me is it worth it, I would say get it. The system had transform into different beast after 24 hours non-stop burn in. The soundstage open up and now sound actually come beyond the speakers. You can feel the depth in the music and movie. Just try out Michael Jackson's thriller and the opening where you can really feel that the wind blows at the background while the wolf howling at the right hand side around few feets from you. When the music start, you can feel the dynamic and control in the music. The B&W 603S3 can really sing and never tap into it's true potential until today. Instruments in complex music are easier to follow.

Only photo for the box and XPA-5 before installation. After installation can't see it as it's hidden at the back of the false wall.

Check this out guys. Cheapest 1080p projector using DLP. Support 1080p24. If anyone can bring this in for less than RM 5k than this would be a hot seller for upgrade from 720p. I'm going to hold my HD82 purchase until more review for this unit is out.

Anyway, I had an audition for JVC HD350. Based on the review I had read, the demo is a little bit dissapointing. I'm not sure if the demo unit is having problem as it doesn't show the attribute as mention in the review. So I'm back to 1080p projector.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread....=1155084&page=6

Why you shouldn't buy cheap HDMI cable

Those who think digital is either it works or not should think twice regarding HDMI cable. Unlike digital audio running on coax or toslink, the bandwidth requirement for HDMI is high. Don't buy cheap cable if you run at longer length than 3m. Check out this article:
http://www.audioholics.com/education/cable...ble-bench-tests

Notebook battery repair and replace

Hi, recently I heard some company is doing notebook battery repair and replacement which will only cost around 20%-30% of the original battery price. Anyone know the contact?

I have a DELL notebook that just use for slightly more than one year and the battery kong out. Checking online show that the battery is around RM 400++ which is too expensive. I heard some company change all the internal battery cell to a GP Battery brand and willl work like new.

LCD Top Gun - Compatible light gun for all display

After I upgrade my TV to 43" and get a projector, my light gun for PS2 no longer work as it need those old CRT TV with 50hz or 60hz scanline to work. After much searching I found the product we all are waiting for:

LCD Top Gun - check out Lik Sang website.

Best of all, it work with XBox, PS2 and PC!!!! That's what I call value for money. I can play the old shooting games such as Operation Wolf using MAME32. Cool. Price also not very expensive around USD 35. I'm ordering one so hopefully I don't get any issue importing.

OMAP processor overclocking possible!

Hi Everyone,

I had been searching for overclocking tools for my Dopod 818 Pro for sometime and most only support INTEL and Samsung processor. However the search ends when I found this thread.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic....p=224220#224220

I'm going to try it now and somebody mention they can hit 250Mhz and above. So that is around 25% faster than default 200Mhz. Also mention is Skype is working smoothly even with Noise Cancellation turn on after overclocking. So we don't have to mumble about our speed slower than Atom

Try it out!!! Let's check what is the max speed we can hit!
