Read Before Posting or Starting A New Thread!

I guess a lot of the regs are kinda tired answering the same thing over and over again, so lets compile them into a FYI thread so we dont have to repeat ourselves. Would be a good info to compile anyways. Anyone who wants to contribute so i can summarize it in a one thread can PM me to keep the thread clean or just post it and i'll compile it in the first post.

1. Gaining or losing weight is not dependant on what supplement you take, mainly mass gainers. To gain weight, you need to have a caloric SURPLUS while to lose weight its caloric DEFICIT. Google the terms if you dont understand. Consuming mass gainers once a day and expecting to gain weight while you're not eating enough is just plain wasting money. So is taking fat burners and not training.

2. Creatine does not shrink your balls. Nor is it steroids.

3. There are no BEST brand in the market. Most brands offer mainly the same ingredients. Its really up to you to choose what is value for money and the taste of any particular supplement. For reviews, click here. For info on how to get the supplements you want, there are a lot of online sellers out there that sells them. If you dont trust online sellers you can get them from either egonutritions or GNC. For online seller reviews, click here

4. There are no BEST workout routine out there. If that was the case everyone would be doing the same thing. Find a routine that fits your timetable and your goals. For sample workouts you can copy the workout routines that the regulars are currently doing here, or read the stickied thread here

5. READ THE STICKIED THREADS BEFORE POSTING ANY QUESTIONS. Seriously. Read. Every. One. Chances are the answers you want, or more can be found there. If you are a beginner just starting out weights please read the whole thing twice.

6. If you're overweight, cut first. If you're underweight, bulk first. If you're just starting out, dont worry about either one, get your training routine right and it will come naturally.

7. Supplements are meant exactly that, to supplement. You don't actually NEED supplements in order to grow. Eat, Train, Sleep, Repeat. Only buy supplements when you know EXACTLY what it does, what does it contain, and if it fits into your dietary needs. Read reviews of whatever supplement you want to get before actually getting them.

8. Dont boast your poundages if you are not prepared to provide proof. Its the internet anyone can say anything. Back it up and you'll get respect.

9. Generally,
1-5 reps = strength
5-8 reps = mass
8-12 reps = hypertrophy.
8-16 working sets per bodypart per week, not including warm ups.
However this is a very rough guide. Tons of workout programs out there. Its up to you to follow which one. Try to stick to a program for at least a few months.

10. Bodybuilding is all about training, rest, and nutrition. If you're not growing, chances are one or more of these 3 factors are the culprit.

11. Having visible abs is all about your DIET. No amount of crunches or sit ups you do would do you any good. Get your bodyfat to around 10% and you would see them

12. It is against the forum rules to discuss about steroids and its usage.

okay thats all i got for now. Other members PLEASE contribute, thanks

think its high time to compile a article base. too many good articles posted in bodybuilding thread ends up getting lost with the many posts there. for those who contribute please put a link to the source as well..

Better Back by Dorian Yates. (this article made me change and tweak my back days. when DY talks about lats, you listen and listen GOOD)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

by Dorian Yates

New Standards and Breaking Down Mental Barriers
Over the course of my Mr. Olympia reign, I became known for setting a completely new standard for back development, in much the same way that Tom Platz had done a decade earlier when it came to legs. Thatâ??s how it usually is in any sports endeavor, like when my fellow Brit Roger Bannister ran the four-minute mile in 1954. Until then, such a feat was considered impossible. Yet once he had done it, the mental barriers came down and runners began doing it all the time.

It was much the same with back muscularity. Until I came along and set the new standard, bodybuilders never thought it was possible to build so much thickness, width, and detail in the lats. After me, Ronnie Coleman took his own back to a new level of freakiness. Not to say that his back was better than mineâ?? he had a bit more overall size and I had more detail to mineâ?? but you get the point.

I would never have built my back to the proportions I did, had it not been for a few champions who came before me. Foremost on the list would be the man who won eight Mr. Olympia titles just before my reign began, Lee Haney. Leeâ??s structure alone had all the makings of a great back: very wide clavicles and a very small waist. So even before he started adding muscle back there, he already had a pronounced V-taper. While he was Mr. Olympia, one of Haneyâ??s most formidable physique weapons was his wide, thick back. It wasnâ??t overly detailed, but it was still better than anything we had seen before in his predecessors.

The man who actually proved to be my greatest inspiration to make my back a strong point was the late Momo Benaziza. Momo beat me the first time I competed as a pro at the 1990 Night of Champions. It was the only time I was ever beaten as a pro, and the loss stung. The main reason Benaziza beat me was his thick, rugged back. It had such depth and was etched in detail all the way from his traps down to his draping lower lats, and it made mine pale in comparison at the time. Right then and there, I set it in my mind to get that same look for my own back, and for inspiration, I tacked up back shots of Momo at my home and at my gym.

Why Donâ??t We See More Great Backs?
Since Ronnie retired, I havenâ??t seen many backs in pro bodybuilding that I considered exceptional. I suppose this Joel Stubbs bloke from the Bahamas would qualify, but itâ??s hard to give him full credit since he doesnâ??t have a very complete physique overall (light in the legs). If you ask most bodybuilders why they donâ??t have great backs, they will often give the excuse that only a handful of guys with very lucky genetics are capable of building backs like me or Ronnie. I canâ??t speak for Ronnie, but I donâ??t think there was anything very special about my genetics in that area. Itâ??s true that my lats do insert very low, but I see plenty of pros with similar attachments.

The real reason is that most bodybuilders fail to grasp the function of the back and never train it properly. The basic function of the lats, without getting overly technical, is to bring the arms down from an overhead position and also to bring the arms back when they are in front of the body. In other words, a pulling down movement as well as pulling back as in any type of row. To work the lats completely, the lower back must be arched, not rounded.

Another common limiting factor toward building the lats is that itâ??s quite easy to let the biceps or momentum do the actual work rather than the lats, and as you should know, the biceps are much smaller and weaker than the lats. Therefore, if your biceps give out first, your lats never receive sufficient stimulation needed to spark growth.

The final and perhaps most significant issue working against back development is the simple and painfully obvious fact that the whole muscle group is in back of you, and you canâ??t see it. Not only does the adage â??out of sight, out of mindâ?? prove sadly appropriate in this case, but not being able to see the lats while you work them also makes it much more difficult to establish a strong mind-muscle connection with them, as opposed to â??mirror musclesâ?? like the chest and arms.

I can say from the experience of having coached many bodybuilders over the years that the back is the one area where establishing this connection is the most critical. Just about anybody can stimulate the chest to grow with bench presses, the biceps with curls, or the quads with squatsâ?? but stimulating the lats whilst performing pulldowns or rows is not quite so simple.

The very first thing I do when taking a bodybuilder through a back workout is to cut the weight they are usingâ?? often by halfâ?? and have him or her focus intensely on feeling the lats contract as they pull, hold the peak contraction point and squeeze the lats as hard as possible, and feel them stretch as they lower the resistance. I canâ??t tell you how many of them have been stunned to actually feel their lats working for the very first time once they do this.

The Myth of Wide-grip Superiority
One myth that has held back the development of lats the world over is the persistent idea that using a wide grip on chins and pulldowns is the best way to build wider lats. This myth probably has its origins in the fact that using a wide grip on any vertical pulling motion will selectively recruit the smaller upper back muscles like the teres major and minor, the upper portion of the traps, and the rhomboids.

When a bodybuilder feels these smaller muscle groups at the top of the back working, he often assumes he is making his lats wider. But the lats actually originate under the armpits and insert near the waist. Using a wide grip does not provide anywhere near a full range of motion for them. A narrower grip, in contrast, allows both a better stretch and a more complete contraction. If you donâ??t believe me, pantomime two types of pulldowns right now as you read this, doing your best to contract the lats as hard as possible: a wide-grip pulldown and a narrow, underhand grip. I guarantee you that you will feel a more powerful contraction of the lats with the narrow underhand grip.

In my early career, I experimented with various types of grips, and I found that using a closer grip with the hands either parallel (facing each other) or fully supinated (underhand) actually provided the best contraction and most complete range of motion for the lats. Throughout my Mr. Olympia reign, I never did a single set of wide-grip chins or lat pulldowns. My two choices for vertical pulling were always a narrow underhand grip for lat pulldowns, which I would go up to 400 pounds on, and the Hammer Strength Iso-lateral pulldown machine.

A final reason to consider using a narrow grip beyond the issue of range of motion is the fact that it puts the biceps in a stronger position. Since the biceps are far smaller and weaker than the lats, putting them in a position where they are guaranteed to fail before the lats are properly stimulated, as in any wide-grip vertical pull, will cause you to shortchange your potential growth.

Putting Together the Ideal Back Workout
The back is a very large and complex group of muscles, but the ideal back training routine neednâ??t be overly long or complicated. Hereâ??s what I recommend based on what I found to work best over my competitive career.

1. Nautilus pullovers (if available)

Arthur Jones capitalized on the concept of pre-exhausting back in the early â??70s when he designed the first Nautilus pullover machine, which he referred to as â??The Upper Body Squat.â?? The beauty of this piece of equipment is that it allows the lats to be worked directly without having to go through the â??weak link in the chainâ?? represented by the biceps. The lats can be worked through 180 degrees of motion to failure, and that failure is not limited in any way by the biceps, as they are not involved.

I know that not every gym has one of these machines, but I have had one at Temple Gym for over 20 years and consider it to be priceless in the quest for a bigger back. Another advantage to doing pullovers first is that you pre-exhaust the lats. It will take less weight in the subsequent rowing and pulldown movements to thoroughly fatigue the lats, and they will reach that fatigue without being limited so much by the biceps.

You can use a dumbbell for pullovers if you donâ??t have access to a machine, but the range of motion is shorter and itâ??s difficult to keep the triceps out of the motion. A straight-arm cable pullover is another option, but itâ??s tough to use enough resistance and stay on the floor at the same time.

A Close-grip Pulldown Movement
As I said before, I preferred a close-grip cable pulldown, usually with an underhand grip. This provides the most complete range of motion for the lats and also puts the biceps in the strongest pulling position possible.

Barbell or Dumbbell Rows
The two most productive vertical pulling movements I found were barbell rows and one-arm dumbbell rows. I often would alternate between the two from workout to workout. With barbell rows, I discovered through experimentation that an underhand grip put the biceps in a stronger position. I also found that standing at roughly a 70° angle and pulling into the waist worked the lats more completely than the â??old-schoolâ?? style of bending over with the torso parallel to the ground and pulling into the chest, which worked more of the upper back muscles, as opposed to the actual lats.

Cable or Hammer Strength Seated Row
I would also do some type of horizontal rowing movement, either the Hammer Strength seated row youâ??ve probably seen the famous black and white shots of me doing, or seated cable rows. The machine is a perfect choice for anyone who has lower back problems that could be aggravated by barbell rows. However, if you keep your back arched instead of rounded, that shouldnâ??t be an issue. I usually did both a free weight row as well as either a seated machine or cable row in my routines.

Deadlifts
The order of the aforementioned exercises isnâ??t overly important, but I do feel that doing deadlifts last as I always did is the best way to include them in your back routine. Very heavy deadlifts can put a great deal of stress on the spine as well as other areas. Had I performed deadlifts first, it would have required something like 600 or maybe even 700 pounds for me to reach failure with 6-8 reps. Instead, I did them last and needed only 405-495 pounds at most to get the job done. Also, I never did my reps from the floor up, but from the mid-shin. The initial pull off the floor is mainly using the legs and glutes, which I didnâ??t care to train on back day.

A Final Word on Momentum
If there is one culprit to blame for lack of back development in bodybuilders, itâ??s the use of momentum to move the weight, rather than pure lat power. One must keep in mind that there are three types of strength: positive (lifting the weight), static (the peak contraction at the top of the rep where the muscle is fully contracted), and negative (lowering).

Your strength is actually the least in the positive and the greatest in the negative. In other words, if you can lift 200 pounds, you can probably hold 250 pounds in the peak contraction and can lower about 300 pounds in the negative. Thatâ??s just a very rough example. Most bodybuilders really only perform the positive portion of the rep and completely miss out on the other two possible areas.

A quick test to see if this describes you is to see if you can stop each rep at the peak contraction and pause to fully contract the lats, then lower it slowly under control for a good stretch. If you canâ??t, youâ??re using too much weight and would actually benefit greatly by reducing the resistance. Studies have shown that the negative portion of the rep causes more muscle damage and stimulates greater gains in strength than the lifting itself.

Summary: A Great Back Can Be Yours
So, armed with all this knowledgeâ?? can you now go forth and build a back like mine or Ronnie Colemanâ??s? I canâ??t say for certain that you can, but if you go about your back training in the proper manner, you at least stand a fighting chance. Having the confidence that you can improve the development of your back, along with the knowledge of how to train it properly, will mean that whatever your back looks like at the present moment, in time you can indeed make it wider, thicker, and more impressive.

Are You Ignorant When it Comes to the Deadlift?
by Mark Rippetoe – 12/06/2011
T-Nation Article

All the small things

The itty bitty tips we should know about bodybuilding and weightlifting in general

In the gym:
1. DO NOT start chatting with someone doing a set or preparing to. unless you want a dumbbell thrown at you
2. Save the small talk for after workouts, or outside the gym. Rest periods are usually 1-3 mins between sets so keep your chatter to a minimal
3. Dont slam the db's down. You'll look more badass if you put them back on the rack without a sound. You look like a tard slamming down 20lbs DB's. Really.
4. Keep back the plates and rack DB's back. Doesnt matter if no one else does it. Lead by example.

General tips
1. Rinse and clean your shaker bottle and leave the cap open so it wont smell
2. Wear non compressible shoes (ie skater shoes) when doing deads/squats.
3. Good form is always, ALWAYS, better than using heavier weights.

Feel free to add in, guys.

Noticed that there are a lot of the posters have their routines posted here and there. Let's consolidate them to a thread shall we? Please contribute your routines along with exercises, sets and reps done and why you're doing it that way. Will write my current gvt and normal routine once I get back from work. Sucks to write on a phone.

DL's pinned thread only has four routines, and it was five years ago. Maybe we can add more info to that for the beginners asking for a routine

Challenges

Okay heres something i got from another site, which strikes me to be quite a good idea. worth trying it here to see if it flies. anyone can post up a challenge in this thread that is related to strength or BB'ing feats (no i dont mean b-boys). However, the poster -must- have a video of himself doing the same challenge else its not accepted. Lets keep the challenges at somewhere above what an average person can do, shall we? (ie, would consider pull ups to be something not everyone can do)

if the challenge involves weights, count the weight against your own BW, for example a 200lbs dude benching 300lbs the challenge would be to bench BW + 50%.

Sort of like playing horse basketball, if anyone knows what it means heh. Just copy whatever the person is doing. (recalls back the crazy 360 crossover layup attempts )

I'll start off with a video of 50 consecutive push ups later on when im doing my "cardio" at the local park.

edit:
to kick start the thread. no im not looking for a form check on push ups. i dont do these often, and dont plan to do it any other way.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

[YOUTUBE]lCIm18zfVvg[/YOUTUBE]

Not taking whey protein doesnt mean you'll not grow.
- No pain no gain
- Lift Heavy!
- Eat More, my girlfriend eats more than you
- Focus On Compound Exercises.
- Make sure u sleep enough, bodybuilding = recovery = bodybuilding
- Muscles are built outside the gym

Advises:
- The best activities for your health are pumping and humping
- Consistency and Variations are 2 contradictions that you must practice in training
- Don't post an e-stat on forums and expect people to believe you without proof of video/pics. Grow up.
- Same like girls, we don't have good day everyday (LOL)
- Pick up after yourself at the gym, wipe the bench, rerack DB's, keep away weights once you're done with them.
- Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going. stick to your routines!

General quotes on weightlifting and life:
- try and you may not fail, dont try you already fail
- If the only tool at your disposal is a hammer, treat everything like a nail
- With muscles, as with everything else, in union there is strength
- if you fail to plan, you plan to fail
- Impatiently rushing produces no result
- If you can't make it good, at least made it look good
- Iron never lies to you
- Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.
- If you THINK you are tired, you are NOT. You KNOW when you are really tired.
- In the gym, the only person you need to beat is yourself.
- Everybody wants to be a bodybuilder but nobody wants to lift no heavy ass weights

Mixing up volume and strength routines

hey guys, made a new topic to hopefully get some concrete answers. need your wisdom in this scenario.
atm im basically doing a simple routine, no program whatsoever but kind of adhering to strength gains for now. here's a sample using incline db press as of last week;

workout A
50lbs x 12 - warm up
60lbs x 10
72lbs x 8 (till failure)
83lbs x 5 (till failure)

it has given me good results so far, increased 10lbs poundage over the last month or so. now im planning to alternate some sort of volume training using maybe 90% of my 5RM max sort of like this;

workout B
50lbs x 12 - warm up
60lbs x 12
72lbs x 12
72lbs x (till failure)
72lbs x (till failure)

i doubt i would be able to achieve 12 reps on all the 70lbs lifts, but nevertheless i would be training until i reach 12 reps for all the sets. my question is would it be a good idea for me to alternate workout A and workout B every week?

Now I've kinda learning the powerlifting way to bench press, somewhat like this Dave Tate Bench Press Cure

my question is; is this a proper way for isolating the chest? going on a new routine where bench presses would be the primary chest exercise, after DB presses. anyone else benches this way?

Saw this topic on T-Nation forums and realised we dont have one here. i'll edit this post and compile your contributions into a list so everyone can learn not to be a d*** at the gym without realising it.

mine are:
1. occupying more than one bench/station at any given time, but if you're willing to share and wait for your turn, then its fine.

2. throwing down <70lbs db's with force at an obvious attempt to get attention on how awesome you are

3. talking shop while sitting on benches and taking up space in the free weight area. its already crowded as it is.

4. resting between sets for more than 5 mins sitting down at the HS machines, staring into space/on the phone/watching everyone else and when asked how many more sets, says x amount and immediately starts the set. were you actually waiting for me to start you off?

5. resting the short barbells on the benches instead of the floor. do the bars really need cushioning, and are you that lazy to lift it bar off the floor instead?

i'll think of more later.

Just asking out of curiosity.
for me its:

incline db press
seated shoulder presses
squats (started maybe 2 months ago, hate it but i like the results)
deadlifts (also started 2 months ago)
bench press
and the 1x10 set of BW pullups and tricep dips every time i step into the gym. sort of like a warmup routine.

(i.e. 3 sets of bicep curls, 3 sets of tricep push downs, 3 sets of calf raises, etc.)

Here is a sample workout schedule that you can follow:

Monday:
Chest & Back
- one exercise for each and do 10 sets of 10 reps

Wednesday:
Legs, calfs, and abs
- 10 sets of 10 reps for legs
- 3 sets of 15+ reps for calfs and abs

Friday:
Shoulders, biceps, and triceps
- 10 sets of 10 reps for shoulders
- 3 sets of 10+ reps for biceps and triceps
Do not workout on Tuesday, Thursday, and weekends. This will give your body plenty of time to rest and grow.

Rest only 60-90 seconds between sets. The first few sets will feel easy, but as you progress through the workout the sets will get harder as you fatigue. When you can complete all 10 sets of 10 reps with good form increase the weight by 5%.

Supplements:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

In order:
Nitrotech Hardcore 4lbs x2
ON Whey 5lbs
ON Whey 10lbs + Fish Oil
Gaspari Myofusion 5lbs + EGO brand Creatine
Nutrex Isobolic Whey Blend + ON Amino Energy
ON Whey + Casein + Scivation Xtend + Seven Seas Fish Oil, Liquid (20/08/2011)
Scivation Xtend + Ego House Brand Creatine (01/12/2013)

Progress Pictures:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Before Pic:
[attachmentid=2573958]
2011
[attachmentid=3321659]
2012
[attachmentid=3321661]
2013
[attachmentid=3321628]

Videos
Mikehuan's Youtube Channel
