After the formation of Barisan Nasional in 1973, prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein appointed Hussein Onn as the new finance minister in 1974, taking over from MCA leader Tan Siew Sin, who had occupied the post since 1959. For the first time since independence, Umno controlled the country’s purse.

When Hussein became PM, after the death of Razak, he brought in Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, then chief executive of Petronas, to be the new finance minister in 1976.

Hussein Onn had a strategy. In exchange, he appointed MCA leader, Lee San Choon, as the new transport minister on Nov 1, 1979.

Since then, the transport portfolio has remained with an MCA leader, except when Pakatan Harapan won GE14 and the post went to Loke Siew Fook of DAP.

Transport to riches

The continued dominance of MCA in the country’s business and financial matters has been well documented. As the Chinese controlled almost all the commercial activities in the country, MCA frequently set the agenda and influenced public policy on commerce and industry.

The Umno-led government was simply the political administrator. They had no choice but to “kow-tow” to the “towkays” in MCA, the centrifugal force built around the leader who also controlled the transport ministry.

Certain leaders in the ministry were opportunistic in regards to a variety of business, whereby operating licences, vehicle registration and inspection, route permits, import approvals for vehicles, shipping and forwarding licenses and contracts, were all managed on a regular basis.

Major contract works and construction for airports, ports, railways and roads were also budgeted by the ministry. Dredging contracts for ports alone were worth hundreds of millions of ringgit.

Having said that, MCA’s transformation of declining industries like rubber production and tin mining into oil palm cultivation and small-scale manufacturing was obviously commendable.

Equally impressive were the construction initiatives for housing estates and new townships. Conversion of agricultural land and old mining areas into housing and commercial urban centres, were ultimately beneficial.

These were new economic activities using mainly locally raised funds and investments. MCA members were mainly responsible for them.

At this point, Umno was busy with issues of nationalism and was clueless about business development and technology. As such, it wasn’t aware of many money-spinning opportunities.

Their national agenda was limited to fighting for “Bahasa” in schools and soon after, religion and “shariah” matters, which made some Umno individuals look important as this was a domain familiar to them.

Marcos led the way

However, there were a few leaders within the party who began to realise the business potential within the government. “Bumis must be in business”, was coined as a new tag line.

A commission-based culture, popularly referred to as “Ali Baba”, started to take shape within Umno which soon spread like a bush fire. With the shout of “Bumi” agenda on top of this hidden intent, the slogan gained traction and became a new leading light for Umno.

The new slogan camouflaged corruption but by the late 1980s, Malaysia had began its downward spiral into what is now latent corrupt practices, relatively similar to what was happening in the Philippines and Indonesia.

When President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines was thrown out of office in February 1986, due mainly to escalating public discontent, there were similar calls in Malaysia that we were heading in that direction too.

Twelve years later, similar riots or a people’s revolution happened in Indonesia. President Suharto had to quit after three decades in power due to the economic and political crisis, a polite term for rampant corruption and abuse of power.

During the peak of the two-day riots in 1998, about 5,000 people died throughout Indonesia. Exactly a week later, on May 21, Suharto stepped down. The Indonesians paid dearly for their freedom and to resurrect justice from the dictatorial rule of Suharto.

In Malaysia, the main impact of the Indonesian riots translated into the sacking of Anwar Ibrahim (deputy prime minister) from Umno in September 1998. Anwar was subsequently jailed in April 1999. Anwar tried to draw a parallel between Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Suharto and for that, he had to leave the government and eventually surrender his personal freedom.

Anwar founded his own party, PKR, and Umno moved on, by which time the government rapidly went into privatisation ( termed as “piratisation” by Anwar’s supporters).

More procurement opportunities became available to the selected few in Umno’s top echelon. Their leaders became more brave and visible in their attempts to win larger commissions and to become part of the project agents or project promoters as there were no rules to bar them from getting involved in business.

Leakages through huge commissions

The scale of corruption grew and so were the amounts involved. It could best be summarised as follows.

In 1984, the rate of commission perhaps started at 10% of the contract value, while 90% was spent on the actual contract work.

By 2014, the figures were reversed; higher commissions and less money for the actual contract work.

These amazing figures reflected badly on Umno’s administration. It became a measure of how serious the outflows or leakages or commissions in government procurement systems have become.

It cut across every aspect of their budgets, businesses and projects including what we now have just learned from 1MDB scandals, in government bonds and so called “Islamic sukuk”, too.

Therefore, is there any necessity to explain how a Lumut-based naval ship contract failed, when RM6 billion was paid prior to any ship delivery? Or the RM5.4 billion contract to build six offshore patrol vessels (OPV) of which only one was delivered in 2017? Or the US$1.2 billion French Scorpene submarines deal, the outcome of which we are all familiar with. Or RM300 million paid for US-made helicopters that were never delivered?

Rampant corrupt practices were found all over the country. From as small as a piece of paper called taxi permits, to import permits or APs for vehicles, industrial goods and machineries, to major gas pipeline construction contracts in far-flung places like Sabah and Sarawak.

A common one that is so widespread in many local authorities, is in land use conversion or “kebenaran merancang (KM)” for housing and commercial projects. Highway concessions weren’t far behind, and so were the many large-scale sales of government assets such as army camp land in urban areas.

And of course, the most lucrative, the creme de la creme among many politicians, is the easy money obtained from the compulsory 30% Bumi portion of shareholdings in non-Bumi companies prior to them getting approval for the listing exercise.

Umno leaders, under the pretext of the New Economic Policy, became instant millionaires but their supporters especially those in rural areas remained poor. The ordinary members, who badly need not only financial assistance but also technical skills and proficiency which the party has long neglected, are still to be counted.

Whereas the rich Umno leaders are found to own massive amounts of equity in monopolistic companies and businesses such as banking, insurance, securities, foreign labour import and sand mining licences, among many others.

All this was done under the guise of the NEP and for “Bangsa, Agama dan Negara”.

Reboot the system

Umno leaders have obviously failed their members and the Bumis big time. No doubt about that. They have to take the full blame for the systemic failures in the country, too. The B40 group and the youths remain out of focus.

With a poor education system, poor command of English and poor employment opportunities, the Umno riches never trickled down, as often articulated by an ex-Umno prime minister.

Among other matters, Umno has to bring back fiscal discipline and prudent financial management. It has to run like a corporate entity fully responsible towards the shareholders (members) and stakeholders (the rakyat).

Umno, therefore, is in a default position to reboot the system and start all over again.

This is a massive task and it cannot be done without a new leadership at the helm, with a new path to tread, and a new direction to take.

Those who are known to be corrupt should be kicked out, otherwise, the party will not get anywhere and cannot be salvaged.

There is a lesson to be learnt from the Partai Golongan Karya (Golkar) of Indonesia, which Suharto once led. “Eliminate the corruption virus. Keep them out of the party.”

This virus has been spreading in the country long before Covid-19 came along.

TEL AVIV: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today the bombing campaign on the Gaza Strip aims to deter Hamas but did not rule out a campaign to “conquer” the enclave’s Islamist rulers.

“There are only two ways that you can deal with them,” he said about Hamas in a Tel Aviv briefing for a group of foreign ambassadors.

“You can either conquer them, and that’s always an open possibility, or you can deter them, and we are engaged right now in forceful deterrence, but I have to say we don’t rule out anything.”

The hawkish premier insisted Israel “didn’t seek” the escalation that began on May 10 when Hamas fired rockets towards Jerusalem after demanding that Israeli security personnel vacate the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, Islam’s third holiest site.

Netanyahu linked the dramatic surge in violence to a decision by Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas to cancel Palestinian elections that had been scheduled for this weekend.

Abbas’ secular Fatah movement had reached a deal with its long-term rivals Hamas to hold the vote, but Abbas cancelled it citing Israel’s refusal to guarantee voting in annexed east Jerusalem, which Palestinians claim as their future capital.

Hamas accused Abbas of perpetrating a “coup” against the agreement, and of giving Israel a veto over the Palestinian right to vote.

Palestinian experts have said Hamas is now seeking to establish itself as the real defenders of Palestinians against Israel, and as a more forceful voice than Abbas’ Fatah.

Netanyahu said that when Hamas “saw that these elections were not going to take place, they sought to… incite riots, to incite violence, in order to further their political goals”.

He implied Hamas was also responsible for an escalation of unrest in east Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah area, where a Jewish settler effort to evict Palestinians from their homes has fuelled months of anger.

And he blamed the Islamists for the clashes at Al-Aqsa, which was stormed by Israeli security forces in response to Palestinian stone-throwing during the holy month of Ramadan.

“I have to say that we didn’t expect quite a conflagration,” Netanyahu said.

“What we did was everything in our power to deescalate the potential conflict around Jerusalem and the Temple Mount,” he added, using the Jewish term for the Al-Aqsa compound, which is also a sacred site for Jews.

The goal of the Gaza campaign is to “degrade Hamas’ capabilities, their terror capabilities, and degrade their will”, Netanyahu said.

Whether you are watching the El Kurd family live stream from Sheikh Jarrah after being forcibly thrown from their homes by Israeli soldiers; or the picture of the Palestinian woman paralysed by the sight of her four dead children killed by a targeted Israeli strike; or the unarmed worshippers praying in Al Aqsa — the third holiest site — during the holiest month of Ramadhan, and being attacked with Israeli stun grenades and gassed into subjugation — make no mistake: this is genocide by the hands of Apartheid Zionists Israel and every other nation that pledges its allegiance to the state of Apartheid Zionists Israel.

Today, the colonisers of the past uplift and embolden the colonisers of the present. If you are silent, you are complicit. And it is this complicity that has led to Apartheid Zionists Israel’s murderous regime against the Palestinians being applauded by Zionists as the Al Aqsa compound was set alight; that led to a Zionist settler brazenly declaring to Palestinian Muna El-Kurd while standing in her garden: “if I don’t steal your home, someone else will”; and that led to Israeli civilians marching through the streets, supported by Apartheid Zionists Israeli soldiers, shouting ”death to Arabs”.

And so it is the rest of the world which must mobilise now against fascism, against military occupation, against apartheid and against settler colonialism. The Qur’an instructs us: “O you who believe, be upright for God and be bearers of witness with justice.” (Qur’an 5:8)

It is incumbent upon every Muslim nation: from Asia to Africa — — and every human soul that exists between the seven continents under this one sky — — let us unite to see justice done. When the Day of Judgement befalls us, and there is no place on this earth to cower away from what is to come, let us be certain and stand steadfast in the belief that we were on the right side of history.

As Muslims, it is incumbent upon us to maintain and uphold the basic tenants of our faith. Deafening silence amidst brutal injustice — a flagrant violation of international human rights law — is the very antithesis of Islam. Islam beseeches every Muslim nation to reflect upon this inherent duty placed upon us by our Lord and take immediate action. Our Prophet Muhammad taught us to help the oppressed and the oppressor. When he was questioned on what aiding the oppressor meant, he replied: “To prevent him from his oppression.”

Let us be resolutely clear: whether the injustice occurs on the streets of Minneapolis, USA, where George Floyd was murdered by police brutality emboldened with systemic anti-Blackness; or the streets of Colombia where protestors are being disappeared in their dozens and presumed murdered by police mobs, the collective brutality points to one thing and one thing alone: injustice left unchallenged festers until its poison spreads and infects every sinew.

We are living in an unprecedented times: a global pandemic has gripped the entire world. People across the globe have been instructed to physically distance and to stay at home. What of the Palestinians of Gaza, then, living in an open-air prison — a densely populated strip of occupied land — where there is no possibility of physically distancing from other people, let alone the bombs raining down upon them? What of the Palestinians of Sheikh Jarrah, who cannot seek refuge by ‘staying at home’, when they are being forcibly expelled from their homes by Zionist settlers, aided and abetted by Apartheid Zionists Israeli forces?

The Covid pandemic has infected millions across the globe and millions have died. What, then, of the millions of Palestinians displaced by the infection of Israeli settler colonialism? The hundreds of thousands killed by the virus of apartheid, fascism, terrorism, hatred and discrimination?

We must not allow Apartheid Zionists Israel’s dehumanisation of the Palestinian people to continue. We must not remain silent as children continue to form part of a statistical body count of fatalities at the hands of Apartheid Zionists Israel. We must not let Palestinian protestors resisting the Occupation of their homes and their livelihoods with freedom songs to be painted as villains by armed Zionist settlers and Apartheid Zionists Israeli forces. And we must out rightly refuse to let Palestinians resisting their persecution with stones, against bullets and bombs, to be called violent by a terrorist apartheid state.

The only thing Apartheid Zionists Israel is defending itself against is the right to occupy, to land grab, to ethnically cleanse and to colonise the Palestinian people. We must not stay silent.

We must demand for action that works. Not another 73 years of one sided close door diplomacy that only encourages Apartheid Zionists Israel to continue to massacre the Palestinian people and tactically mass land grab.

Unprecedented challenges requires unprecedented solution. Hence:

Calls for an immediate cessation of attacks on the state of Palestine and its people.
Calls for the immediate withdrawal of all Apartheid Zionists Israeli troops from the Occupied Palestinian Territories as earmarked by the UN Resolution 242 on November 22, 1967 (Pre-1967 lines)
To dispatch an international protection force to Palestine to protect the civilian population from further Apartheid Zionists Israeli attacks.
And encourages every nation to employ boycott divestment sanctions (BDS) on Apartheid Zionists Israel.
To form a Multinational Islamic Defence Force (MIDF) as long term strategy to secure peace and stability in the combustible region.
To realign new partners of peace as evidently the US and its one sided allies have failed and failed miserably for the last 73 years.
Apartheid Zionists Israel’s continuous massacre of the Palestinian people is a crime against humanity; a crime it is all too arrogant to commit in front of a global audience. In this new digital age, which of us can claim ignorance? For those who insist upon political disengagement for fear of persecution or worse, still, for the sake of diplomacy; please know that the personal is political. And the very personhood of Palestinians is being systematically and ethnically cleansed from this earth by Apartheid Zionists Israeli colonisers.

We often hear world leaders pledge “never again” long after an atrocity has occurred. When the murder of a people has settled quietly in the pages of history books, we turn to them decades later: “if only we were there,” we say.

Today, you are here. The history books are being written now. The time to make your pledge of “never again” is in this very moment. We must move to make the call for action happen: the world stage is watching. All Muslim nations must come together as ONE. All humanity must come together as ONE. Condemn this barbarity. Condemn this atrocity. Condemn Apartheid Zionists Israel.

The Complicated Equation In Gaza - Playing With Peoples' Lives

1. Hamas Fireworks In Gaza

The 'fireworks' have started again in Gaza. The last major outbreak of 'shooting fireworks rockets' from Gaza into Israel took place seven years ago in 2014. It must be noted that both then and now the rockets are only shot from Gaza.

The West Bank Palestinians do not seem to be shooting rockets. The question is why? Why does Gaza shoot rockets and the West Bank does not? They are both Palestinians.

The West Bank is under the control of Mahmud Abbas and the Fatah (the old PLO). Gaza is under the control of Hamas which is the Muslim Brotherhood or Ikhwanul Muslimin. The Fatah and the Muslim Brotherhood are arch enemies. The last elections that were held in Palestine was 15 years ago in 2006. The Hamas won big in Gaza while the Fatah did better in the West Bank. Upon winning in Gaza, the Hamas immediately shot and killed over 40 Fatah leaders who were operating in Gaza. Overnite the Hamas wiped out Fatah from Gaza.

This time the 'spark' that appears to have ignited this latest round of rockets was a Court case involving Israeli settlements and the Israeli police entering the Al Aqsa Mosque to remove protesters. But that is what it appears to be on the surface. This round of rocket firing is actually pre-planned.

2. Zero Military Strategic Objectives

i. From a strategic point of view there is absolutely no military objective that can be achieved by Hamas shooting rockets into Israel. Even if Hamas shoots 10,000 rockets they will not be able to take any territory from Israel.

30% or more of the Hamas rockets fired thus far have fallen back inside Gaza - some killing Palestinians. A sizeable number fall in areas that do not cause damage. A few have caused damage and deaths while the rest of the Hamas rockets are taken down by the Israeli Iron Dome anti-missile system. So there is no military objective that is going to be achieved.

ii. The demand for electric power in Gaza is about 600 MW but Gaza only gets about 180 MW of electric power per day - of which 120 MW are supplied directly by Israel. A local diesel fired power station produces the balance 60 MW of electricity.

So what kind of military strategy is it to shoot thousands of rockets at Israel - when over 66% of Gaza's daily electricity supply is also supplied by Israel? What kind of military strategy is that?

Kalau tuan-tuan masih tak faham, imagine Singapore firing rockets into Johor when over 60% of Singapore's water supply comes from Johor. What kind of suicidal military strategy is that?

iii. Gaza's border crossing with Egypt at Rafaah has been closed and sealed tightly by the Egyptians for years now. Therefore Gaza's only land access to the outside world is through the Israeli border crossings at the Erez Crossing and the Karni Crossing. What type of military strategy is it to shoot rockets at Israel which is the only country that allows goods and people to enter Gaza by land? Even Egypt has closed its border crossing into Gaza.

iv. Hamas knows the Israelis will retaliate

But the retaliation from Israel is real and more importantly it is very well known to Hamas. When they decided to shoot almost 3,000 fireworks rockets (so far) into Israel the Hamas knew very well that the Israelis will retaliate. And they also know that the Israeli retaliation will be devastating. And certainly the 2.0 million ordinary people in Gaza come under immediate danger of suffering death and destruction. The ordinary people will be the ones who suffer.

Todate almost 200 Palestinians have lost their lives. In Israel eight people have also died. Hundreds have been injured in Gaza with a smaller number in Israel. These are mostly civilian lives.

So the military strategic objective of firing rockets into Israel is non-existent.

So why do it? Why put the 2.0 million people of Gaza in harm's way when there are no strategic objectives that can be achieved?

The answers are very simple. The answers lie outside Gaza.

[B]It is for the political survival of the Hamas leadership which resides in Qatar.
It is for the political survival of the Muslim Brotherhood and of Erdogan in Turkey.
It is for the political survival of the Ayatollahs in Iran.
They all have a huge stake in Gaza.
These players need Gaza more than Gaza needs them.
Hamas knows that this time despite shooting so many rockets Israel will not invade Gaza (has not happened thus far). So the people of Gaza will not suffer as much as they did in 2012 etc[/B].

The Hamas leadership will get huge compensation in money from the Saudis, the Qataris, the Muslim Brotherhood's worldwide network etc.

The Aid for Palestine has already started. Sudah ada ostard wal retard yang mahu lelong keris dengan harga tinggi. Mesti dia pun tumpang untung kurang-kurangnya "cover costs" dsbnya?

Yesterday the Hamas boss Ismail Haniyeh who resides safely in Doha in Qatar has already called our PM Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin asking for money.

Now is the time for Hamas leaders to collect money.

2. Palestinian Islamic Jihad - another Iran proxy
Other than Hamas, of course the other new player in Gaza now is the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) which is also shooting rockets from Gaza. The PIJ is much closer to Iran.

"Palestine Islamic Jihad says that Iran provided the rockets that have been striking civilian targets by the scores in Israel, including schools, homes and vehicles. The group's official Ramez Al-Halabi says the “weapons we use to pound Tel Aviv, our weapons, our money, and our food are provided by Iran”

Before this the Sunni Hamas (Muslim Brotherhood) was not too keen on working with Shia Iran. So Iran sidestepped Hamas and 'funded' their own proxy Palestinian Islamic Jihad which in no time, with the help of Iranian money and weapons, was becoming a major player in Gaza.

Sensing that they had a real competitor, the Hamas also became more friendly with Iran - Shia or no Shia. The Iranians on the other hand are prepared to work with anyone who can shoot rockets into Israel. Iranian technicians are in Gaza helping Hamas build rockets.

The Iranians have their own reasons for supporting Hamas against Israel - the political survival of the Ayatollahs.

Hence the Hamas sent a couple of Iranian drones into Israel (Qasef 2 drones, see below) that were shot down by the Israeli air force. The same drones were supplied by Iran to the Houthis in Yemen.

3. The Muslim Brotherhood, Erdogan and Turkey

The Muslim Brotherhood (aka Hamas in Gaza) has suffered serious reversals in their fortunes after the collapse of the devastating Arab Spring. Tunisia, Egypt came under the Muslim Brotherhood after the Arab Spring in 2011. Algeria was also under their influence. But in no time at all they failed miserably (their religion is the problem - it does not work - how long will it take before they will realise this.) The Muslim Brotherhood lost Egypt - the Jewel in the Crown and they also 'lost' Tunisia and Algeria.

Only Turkey (Erdogan) and Gaza are the two places in the world still controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood. But Erdogan in Turkey is losing popularity and has also lost major municipal elections in 2019 (Ankara, Istanbul). The Turkish economy is still very weak. Erdogan needs a boost to his popularity. Gaza may come in handy to boost Erdogan's image.

Although Turkey is not directly involved in shooting rockets from Gaza they provide substantial aid to Hamas - their Muslim Brotherhood cousins. It was reported that TWO of the THREE high rise buildings in Gaza that were destroyed by the Israelis a few days ago were built by Turkey.

4. General Elections in Palestine (West Bank and Gaza) in 2021 - CANCELLED again.

There have been no general elections in the West Bank and Gaza since 2006 - ie for 15 years. In the West Bank, Mahmud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority has lost the support of the people. Hamas is gaining popularity in the West Bank. If elections are held now, it is most likely that the Hamas can win both in Gaza and the West Bank. So Abbas is afraid of having elections. Abbas is 85 years old and not in great health. In his latest announcement Mahmud Abbas has announced that the General Elections will not be held - because of the rocket shooting going on between Gaza and Israel. (Mahmud Abbas pun pandai declare 'Emergency').

My view is this time the Israelis will "take out" the Hamas leadership. They will also degrade Hamas through other means. The Israelis certainly do not want the Hamas to win the general elections BOTH in the West Bank and Gaza. That will cause a bigger headache for them. Lets see what happens.

5. Cat and Mouse between Israel and Iran.
Last year the US killed the Iranian General Qasem Soleymani in a drone missile attack. Soleymani was the commander of the Iranian Islamic Republican Guard Corps or the IRGC. In retaliation the Iranians bombed a US Airforce base inside Iraq.

Then the Israelis killed one of Iran's top nuclear scientists in a super sophisticated 'drone machine gun' attack inside Iran. The Iranians have also retaliated by shooting at Israeli ships. Then a missile was fired from Syria that reached Dimona in southern Israel.

In the continuing tit-for-tat on May 8, 2021 there was a huge fire that broke out in the Iranian port of Bushehr which also house some Iranian nuclear facilities.

It is not impossible that the Israelis are behind this fire which has caused extensive damage to the port of Bushehr.

Five days later on May 13, 2021 both the Hamas and the Iranian created Palestinian Islamic Jihad started firing rockets from Gaza into Israel. Too close for a coincidence?

The general elections (its a joke) are due in Iran on June 18th 2021. Exactly one month from now.

A pro-IRGC candidate is favoured. Over the past years Iranian Supreme Leader-For-Life Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has realised that he can rule Iran quite by himself without listening too much to the elected president (Hassan Rouhani who is finishing his presidential term). Aiding and abetting the Supreme Ayatollah is the Islamic Republican Guard Corps or IRGC whose most powerful and popular leader was General Qasem Soleymani who was killed by the Americans. He has since been replaced by one General Ismail Ghani or something. The IRGC reports directly to the Supreme Ayatollah. They do not report to the elected president - who is just a puppet.

The Iranian IRGC is not only more powerful than the Iranian Army but they have a dominating influence on Iranian domestic and foreign policy making, especially Iranian foreign policy. So the unelected Supreme-Leader-For-Life Ayatollah Khamenei and his pet poodle the IRGC are the real dominant power centers in Iran. With great power come great expense accounts.

There is a conspiracy theory that the late General Qasem Soleymani (below) was 'compromised' by his own Iranian 'friends'.

All his mobile phone numbers were known to the Israeli Mossad which was tracking his detailed movements. Just before he was killed the Mossad gave the General's mobile phone numbers to the Americans who were able to track him. It is reported that on the day he was killed the General changed his mobile phone three times - to evade detection. Still the Mossad and hence the Americans knew of the phone numbers and sent a drone to kill him.

General Qasem Soleymani was getting to be too popular and too powerful inside Iran. As commander of the IRGC he was deciding Iran policy in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and in Palestine without referring to Iranian Foreign Minister Javed Zarif or the President Hassan Rouhani. He reported directly to unelected Supreme-Leader-For-Life Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Presently there is a huge controversy in Iran over some leaked audio tapes where the Iranian Foreign Minister Javed Zarif can be heard criticising General Qasem Suleymani for side stepping the President and the Foreign Ministry.

So someone inside Iran pulled the plug on the General. He was eliminated.

It is likely that a pro-IRGC candidate (will also be endorsed by the Supreme Ayatollah) for the post of Iranian president in the elections on June 18th 2021.

Predictably this present round of 'rocket shooting' in Gaza is now being widely played up in all Iranian media - which makes the IRGC look like saviours of Al-Quds again. Al-Quds refers Jerusalem but it actually points at the Al Aqsa Mosque.

So the situation in the Middle East is always complicated. You have to keep track of exactly who is stabbing whose back.

There is one more outfit at work in Lebanon ie Hezbollah. That will be for another day. Suffice to say that Hezbollah is of absolutely ZERO strategic and military value to anyone - including themselves. Absolutely zero. Till then.

Supporters of Perikatan Nasional coalition have a very peculiar habit of defending the indefensible backdoor government. They do not talk facts and figures. Worse, they would twist and spin even though it does not make any sense. When they fail to argue with you, they would threaten to jail you for spreading fake news. And if that also fails, they would flash race and religion card.

For example, the latest half-baked MCO 3.0 lockdown obviously will fail again to tackle the current third wave (or fourth wave depending on your argument) of Coronavirus pandemic. It will fail simply because it is just another copy of MCO 2.0, which had failed miserably. There’s a reason why Albert Einstein said insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results.

If you try to question why Malaysia fails, but Singapore succeeded in containing the Covid pandemic, they would argue that it’s because the small island is easier to manage. But when you argue that China, the world’s most populous country, too, had managed to defeat the virus using a more brutal lockdown, the same morons would say that’s because China is a communist country.

Fine, let’s talk about the United Kingdom, a democratic country that has about twice the population of Malaysia. Not only Malaysia was a former colony of the British Empire from 1824 to 1957 (except during the Japanese occupation between 1942 and 1945), the country also inherits the same constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy system from Britain.

Three days ago (May 12), PAS Islamist party president Hadi Awang insisted the State of Emergency, first declared by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin on January 11, is still necessary to defeat Covid-19.

Heck, Mr Hadi has even suggested the creation of new laws to exterminate the Opposition, whom he arrogantly and rudely labelled as “pests”, for questioning the emergency rule.

Fake holy man Hadi Awang, however, could not explain why Malaysia is the only country in the world that has declared an Emergency as well as locking up the Parliament under the pretext of fighting Coronavirus. Of course, he also could not explain why, despite having the emergency rule for four months since January, the pandemic has gotten from bad to worse.

Great Britain – England, Scotland and Wales – is saying goodbye to lockdown next Monday (17 May), after months of tough lockdown restrictions. Britain is arguably the Western country that has been under lockdown longer than any of its neighbours in the European Union. Researchers at the Oxford University said Britain had spent 175 days (about 6 months) at its “maximum stringency level.”

With 128,000 total deaths, the UK has the highest reported Covid-19 fatalities in Europe. Britain saw its death toll topped 1,800 in a single day in January, the same month backdoor Prime Minister Muhyiddin shamelessly declared a State of Emergency in Malaysia to cling to power. But on Friday (May 14), Britain recorded only 17 deaths, compared to Malaysia’s 34.

From nearly 70,000 new daily Covid cases in January, Britain’s average new infections have plunged spectacularly to around 2,000 a day now – an improvement of over 97%. Malaysia, on the other hand, recorded 4,113 new infections on Friday, and is on its way to break January’s record of 5,725 daily cases. In fact, Malaysian PM Muhyiddin has warned of 10,000 new cases.

The best part is – the UK had managed to bring down the fatality from 1,800 to 17 deaths, and reduce new cases from 70,000 to 2,000 – without Emergency rule. During the same period, Malaysia, despite introducing iron-fist emergency rule and locking down the Parliament, has seen the death toll skyrockets from single digit 4 (Jan 11) to 34 deaths (May 14) – more than 8 times.

Exactly how did the Great Britain do it? British health officials have been extremely committed and serious about defeating the pandemic, unlike Malaysia. They have raced to get ahead of the Coronavirus by vaccinating hundreds of thousands of people a day not only in hospitals, but also at the soccer fields and churches throughout the country.

So far, more than 36 million people in Britain – approximately 68% of the adult population – have received their first dose, while more than 19 million have had both doses. The number of first doses administered each day is now averaging around 149,000. However, at its peak, an average of about 500,000 people was vaccinated in mid-March, when the schedule of second doses kicks in.

Now, an average of about 365,000 second doses are being administered a day in the UK. Public Health England has estimated that 11,700 deaths have been averted in people aged 60 years or older in England, as a direct result of being vaccinated, up to 25 April 2021. Scotland has vaccinated 90% of those aged 40 and above with at least one dose, while Northern Ireland has reached 88% and Wales 89%.

Malaysia, meanwhile, has seen only 1,166,737 people (3.7% of a population of 33 million) received their first dose and 727,893 people (2.3%) have had both doses. Hence, in total, less than 1.9 million people were vaccinated as of 12 May. Thanks to a clueless and incompetent government, the country recorded an average 28,551 jabs a day in the week of April 28 to May 4.

Clearly, the UK’s huge success has been due to an effective lockdown and a comprehensive vaccination program, and not any state of emergency, let alone playing politics by shutting down the Parliament. More importantly, Britain has a bold and innovative strategy to free up vaccines for more people – delaying the second vaccine dose by up to 12 weeks (3 months).

Sure, the government of Boris Johnson screwed up initially when it managed poorly the outbreak last year. Having learned its lesson, it is finally doing something right. Martin McKee, professor of European public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said – “We didn’t delay the way we did in the first wave. We moved quickly.”

England’s national lockdown, which started on January 4, consisted of four phases and has its key exit strategy to ease the lockdown, depending on the number of cases and vaccination progress. In March 8, all schools and colleges were reopened. In March 29, up to six people are allowed to meet outside. By April 12, non-essential retail reopened where pubs and restaurants can serve people outdoors

Next Monday (May 17), all restaurants and bars as well as hotels, theatres and museums in England can reopen. People will be able to hug friends and family again, with the easing of social distancing rules. International travel would also be able to resume next Monday in most circumstances, although quarantines and testing would still be required for those returning to the U.K.

Malaysians, meanwhile, will continue to suffer the third round of nationwide lockdown from May 12 to June 7. The MCO 3.0 half-baked lockdown, however, is expected to be extended again. Without any new strategy, it’s likely there will be MCO 4.0 lockdown. That’s because not only all types of business are allowed to run at top speed, the vaccination program is running at a snail’s pace.

In order to succeed like Britain, the Malaysian government has to at least boost vaccination at half the speed of the British government – 75,000 of first dose each day for the next 12 weeks to cover as many people as possible. This will be able to protect 6.

3 million people, after which it can start giving the second dose, taking a page from the British playbook.

Malaysia fails not because it’s a bigger country than Singapore, nor because it isn’t a communist country like China. The UK, a country twice the population and with a similar system as Malaysia, has shown that you need a full-blown nationwide lockdown and a speedy vaccination rollout.

Today, the health ministry of Malaysia has reported 4,140 Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections to 466,330. Total deaths have increased by a record 44 to 1,866. The blood is on the hands of politicians like Muhyiddin Yassin and Hadi Awang. But they don’t want to defeat the virus because to do so would mean the end of the illegitimate regime, and the end of their perks of at least RM70,000 per month.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — The Health Ministry (MoH) today released a list of over 150 locations in Malaysia that are predicted to be potential Covid-19 hotspots over a seven-day period, based on the Hotspot Identification for Dynamic Engagement (Hide) big data analytics and artificial intelligence system.

A quick glance of the list shows that the bulk is made up of shopping malls, hypermarkets and grocery stores, and with about 80 per cent of the list located in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor which both have a high-population density.

Here is the full list nationwide as of May 8:

For Kuala Lumpur, the shopping malls are: 1 Mont Kiara Shopping Mall, Bangsar Shopping Centre, Bangsar Village 2, Endah Parade Shopping Complex, Fahrenheit88 Mall, Intermark Mall, Aeon Mall Cheras Selatan, KL East Mall, KL Eco City Mall, Melawati Mall, Mid Valley Megamall, MyTown Shopping Centre, Brem Mall in Kepong, Nu Sentral Shopping Centre, Pavilion Elite Mall and the adjacent Pavilion mall at Bukit Bintang, Low Yat Plaza, Publika Shopping Gallery, Selayang Mall, Setapak Central, the Sogo complex at Jalan TAR, Sungei Wang Plaza, Sunway Velocity Mall, and Suria KLCC.

On Kuala Lumpur’s list are mini market chain 99 Speedmart branches at Jalan Bangsar, Taman Sri Bintang, Taman Wangsa Ukay; supermarket Ben’s Independent Grocer’s Publika outlet; and grocery store KNL Market Sdn Bhd on the first floor of Faber Towers in Taman Desa.

On Kuala Lumpur’s list are hypermarkets Aeon branches at Alpha Angle Shopping Centre, Mid Valley Megamall, Aeon Big branches at Danau Kota, Kepong, Wangsa Maju, Aeon Maxvalu Prime branches at Sunway Velocity and The Sphere Bangsar South, Lotus’ outlets at Cheras, Kepong, NSK Trade City at Peel Road in Cheras and supermarket Super Seven Trade Centre.

Others in the list are Kuala Lumpur’s wholesale market, Jinjang Utara’s morning market, night market Bazaria Wangsa Maju, the Aidilfitri bazaar at Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman, Pasar Pudu’s hawker site, food court Food Republic Pavilion KL, train stations LRT KLCC, LRT Masjid Jamek, KL Sentral’s KTM station, transport hub KL Sentral, and mosques Masjid Jamek Kampong Baru and Masjid Saidina Abu Bakar AS Siddiq Bangsar.

Rounding up the list for Kuala Lumpur are Hong Leong Bank Berhad HQ, Maybank’s Mid Valley City branch, retail and office building Bangunan Cahaya Suria, Guardian’s KLCC branch, Parkson Elite at Pavilion Mall in Kuala Lumpur, office building Menara Bumiputera Commerce and Wisma Cosway, textile outlet Jakel Mall Kuala Lumpur, retail space United Point Commercial, Kompleks Perniagaan & Komuniti Bandar Baru Sentul, VG Desa Park Arkadia, Viva Venture and Taman Metropolitan Kepong.

As for Selangor, hypermarkets, grocery stores and shopping malls also make up a huge part of the list.

These are 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Aeon Mall Rawang, Aeon Mall Taman Equine, Central i-City Mall, KIPMall Kota Warisan, Main Place Mall, Matahari Mall, Plaza Shah Alam, Paradigm Mall Petaling Jaya, Subang Parade, Sunway Pyramid, The Curve, The Mines Shopping Mall, The Starling mall at Damansara Uptown, and Tropicana Gardens Mall.

Catholic lawyers have asked authorities to investigate a video on Archbishop Julian Leow for sedition and defamation.
PETALING JAYA: A Catholic lawyers’ group has condemned what it called a “nefarious” video posted online containing parts of a speech by Archbishop Julian Leow from 2014, which they said was taken out of context.

The Facebook post, uploaded on a page called the “Hud-Hud Crew”, claimed that in the four-minute video, Leow spoke of his 25-year plan against Muslims.

The post, titled “Rahsia Besar: Rakaman Perancangan 25 Tahun Archbishop Katolik Kuala Lumpur Untuk Rebus Orang Islam Seperti Merebus Katak”, claimed that Leow had used an analogy of boiling frogs to describe his plan to pressure Muslims in the country.

It also alleged that the archbishop had “admitted” that the issue on the use of the word “Allah” was part of this 25-year plan.

The post said the video was passed to the “Hud-Hud Crew” by anonymous members of the church, who supposedly wanted to thwart Leow’s plan that they believed would cause a rift between Muslims and Christians in the country.

It had also included the hashtag “#RebusUmatIslam” or #BoiltheMuslims.

In a statement today, Catholic Lawyers’ Society Kuala Lumpur (CLS) president Godfrey Thomas Fernandez said the video was taken out of context with the intention of threatening religious peace and harmony enjoyed by people of different faiths in the country.

“To protect the sanctity of the Catholic Church in Malaysia and for the personal protection of His Grace Archbishop Julian Leow, the CLS calls upon the relevant authorities to investigate the video in question, the owner of the Facebook page and the makers of the incendiary, inflammatory and derogatory statements on the Facebook page in question for sedition, criminal intimidation and criminal defamation.”

Fernandez said the CLS “abhors hatred and violence towards any person on the basis of race or religion”.

“The CLS recognises the inherent dignity of every human being whose rights must be protected regardless of race, ethnicity or religion.”

He said the society also hoped for all parties to engage in inter-religious cooperation to address issues that could result in potential conflict.
